What's using my gps? - Vibrant General

I just did a factory reset...mainly because I'm over the original excitement and wanted to get rid of any apps I don't really need...
Now when I turn on my gps it keeps showing in my notification bar that it's searching....I'm using the system app and I don't see any apps active that would be using it...it's really bothering me and I was just wondering why it might be searching??
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

I kind of noticed that also. I figured somehow if we kill all running app and I would receive a txt message some how att navigator would open itself. If my gps was on it would start searching.... Maybe you have the same o problem?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App

I noticed that as well, and I have no idea what was using it.

Did you turn "use wireless networks" back on in your location settings? I've found that if I don't, the GPS will keep trying to get a lock for any program that uses your location (weather widgets, etc) and won't be able to. So it will keep running and drain the battery really fast.

Layar does not work

Since I purchased the phone layar has not worked. Each time I go to run it at the bottom it says updating featured.....it just sits there. Anyone else seeing this issue?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Haven't had the problem myself. Assuming you've already power cycled, try clearing the application data (settings> manage applications> layer> clear data.) Then force stop.
If it doesn't show up in the list goto menu> filter> all.
If it still isn't working and you care enough to trouble shoot further, you can try a master reset or take out back to the store, though the above should fix it...

I've had this happen once or twice. I just blame the GPS and try again later.
Install GPS Status or GPS Test (I prefer the former) and check how many sats you have locked in.

Near 100 % CPU Android System use

Hi, I'm running the stock 2.1 rom with root to allow for Roam Control, basically. Over the past 2 days I believe the origin of this problem is that the browser when going to the Google homepage will try to get my location and activate the GPS. Mind you it does this for several seconds regardless of me having the location option deselected everywhere...both in the Google search options, phone system settings, browser settings etc.
For those seconds it will usually come on and then go away, but then what happens every so often is it will lock, the GPS icon will constantly flash and the Watchdog app will tell me that Android system use goes up to 100%, with notable heat/drain from the battery and possible system instability.
Nothing will then make the browser respond, killing processes won't help (other than Android System which you obvs. can't kill) and the only solution is to reboot. It's persistent enough now that I've disabled GPS in case that helps trigger this.
What can I do? Is there some setting I didn't catch that can help avoid this abnormal issue? Anyone experience something similar and find a workaround? I basically see the cause as the browser wanting to get my location even though I don't want it to and then hijacking the system process, right? Help would be appreciated.

Try a different browser and see if it does the same thing
Try dolphin browser HD
If the problem persists, make a nandroid, factory reset and then try using the browser. If it happens, then you got a bug somewhere and should try odining to see if that works.
If it still persists, then its time to get a replacement lol

Thanks for the suggestion, however I *may* have fixed this. What I did is reboot the phone with GPS off (it had been permanently on). When going back to google.com I noticed it trying to locate me again, this time with the satellite icon flashing constantly and asking if it wanted to see places near me.
I checked the browser and google.com settings and discovered that they were the same. Curious why it'd still want my location, I then went to system settings under location and saw that only "use GPS satellites" was checked. Unchecking that seems to have done the trick, although IMO it's one which should be unneccessary and I'll have to redo that if I need an actual GPS lock. Or, maybe I should just let it do its annoying thing at google.com which is damn invasive and against all the rest of my settings. So, hope this fixed it and may be useful to others.
Have you done this?
Menu > more > settings > clear location access
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Since location access was disabled this whole time, that was already greyed out/cleared (in the browser) but maybe it'd be worth toggling/clearing again. Thanks.
ETA: no effect. As soon as I re-enable GPS google.com wants to get my location regardless of what all my other settings are. As long as it doesn't recreate the issue in my original post, I won't mind too much, but what an absurd conflict of software interests.

This dumb issue has happened yet again--my workaround is now making the regular/full/desktop version of google.com my homepage. Sigh...

Thank you, but I'm pretty thorough, that one has also been unchecked the entire time. Toggling it back and forth may do something, although I doubt it.

Ok, feel free to disregard if you have tried this as well, but have you tried changing the settings of your 'google' account on www.google.com? If I go to google.com on my phone, there is a link for 'settings', and under those settings is a selection titled 'Allow use of device location'. Try changing this to no if it is on yes.
This all refers to preferences stored on google servers, not through any settings actually on your phone.
I also appreciate you trying to help. Yes, that is the first thing I adjusted before going through everything else. It seems clear that this is an unhappy combination of faults from the phone and google's stubborn refusal to obey every indication that I do not want my location used on the mobile site. I wonder if anyone else has seen this bug--it's the worst I've encountered so far because it's been the one and only thing that's effectively made my phone need a forced reboot (besides the general sluggishness that develops every few days--but I could overlook that as I used to use *spit* WinMo 6.1 which could sometimes demand multiple reboots every day).
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I'm sorry to say that after a long relief of absence the GPS nonsense at google.com mobile reappeared today. No changes on my end, everything still off except GPS itself. I hope it doesn't lock my phone up again. Anyone have new info about this or a fix?

Market probs after 602. Found the prob, need solution

Ive had the same market problem that many have had. Apps wont dowload and all i get is the orange triangle. After swearing at this phone for a few weeks now, and trying everything I could think of and searching forums until my head hurt, I uninstalled the market update and went back to the old version. After trying to download an app, the same thing happened, but now it says "download paused, waiting for wifi". I did notice last week when I was at a hotel that it worked as long as I was on a wifi connection. So my question is this - is there a setting or something that we all have set wrong, or did the new update take it upon itself to only let us use the market when on wifi?

This is a setting issue. Go into settings and look through the battery settings to find the appropriate check box to disable this.

Try Badass Battery Monitor
Look for Samsung Push Service in your apps list and un-install it!
If you use Samsung Apps, this program is automatically installed and stays active, won't let your phone go to sleep!

Instead of trying to uninstall apps, installing Magic Locker allows you to set power saving and this could be very helpful. In my case it doubled the battery life and I now have around 60% left in the evening.
Hope this helps.

There are a number of Apps you can install that will show running applications ~ SystemPanel is one such app.
It comes in two variant ~ Paid & Free.
The free version is okay for looking at what your apps are doing but it does not offer the same level of service that the paid version gives and in this case you do need the paid version.
Full version ($2.99) adds app manager (installer/uninstaller with multi-version APK archival), and long-term application resource monitor to solve app-related battery life problems.
However, for finding out what apps are using your battery you can do this with your phone's built-in settings.
Just navigate to Settings/Applications/Running Services and look at what apps are currently running.
If you don't need a particular app running simply tap on it and select 'Stop'.
Job done that is one app no longer running in the background.
Another option is to again go to Settings/Applications/Battery Usage.
Here you not only see the graph at the top but also a list of main running apps (note not all are shown).
Tap the graph at the top and it shows you various parameters i.e. when the screen was on and when the device was awake. Basically you need both to be the same. If the phone's screen was off but it remained awake you then have an app running constantly in the background.
So, press the back button and look at the list of apps showing. To terminate an app simply tap on it and this time select 'Force Close'.
Spend a little time now and again popping over to these two places (Running Services & Battery Usage) and you should be able to identify what app or apps are eating your battery.

In my case I chose MIUI but I think any theme should work as well. After installation it asked if I wanted to activate the battery saving mode which I accepted to check its performance as I was having battery drain as well and needed a solution.
I was happily surprised the next day. I hope all these issues are fixed by Samsung in ICS.

GPS keeps turning on

Thanks Christ for create this thread as I am about to post the same question.
It has happened in the last couple days. I wouldn't say 100% but surely 98% every time I turn the screen on, there is "searching for GPS" pops up.
It keeps running for from a few seconds to minute then turns back off.
Yes, I DID set to disable GPS.
Does anyway we can figure out which app is actually searching for GPS, gurus?

How do you know it's the FB?
It used to search for gps whenever I received a Facebook notification. It might not be the same issues for you. What about the weather widget?

I don't set any notification ON and FB isn't running at all.
I suspect the G+ but don't know for sure.
Weather widget is not a culprit.
For me, it was Carrier IQ. Once I disabled that, my random GPS wakes stopped.

Sounds reasonable but I do have CIQ enable from day one w/o any issue.
It just happens in the last couple of days. Maybe 2014 isn't the year for me?
Maybe GSam Battery Monitor can help pinpoint which app is causing the GPS wakes. Or Wakelock Detector.
I also have been noticing the location icon popping up on my status bar every now and then. I cant find what app is triggering it. I dont see cIQ in my application manager to disable it...
Sent from my GT-N8013 using Tapatalk
Running Applications > Android System > IQ Agent Service. Hit stop there and then hit stop for Android System. You'll have to do that at each boot unless you're rooted. If you're rooted, you can use System Tuner.
Here's my shots.
This is probably directly related to the issue or NOT.
Clearly, Location Manager Service goes crazy.
What it is is yet to figure out.
At one point, I saw Google Messaging Service kicked on so I turned off Hangouts SMS feature and along with a reboot, my battery is now better but the "searching for GPS " still pops up.
Is location services turned off also in Google Settings and Maps?

Absolutely YES
Those photos... completely baffling. Wow. My guess would be all the recommendations above and going through all apps requiring location and disabling it.
Could try Greenify. I use it. It hibernates apps so they won't run until you tell them to
