Black screen after flash and hard reset - Galaxy S I9000 General

Hi all! 1st post here
I tried to flash the new 2.2 firmware yesterday, but something went wrong...
I have now tried to hard reset it from Recovery mode (Vol Up+Home+Power).
I tried cache wipe and factory reset first, and the update.zip option as well.
No matter what I do, the phone boots, shows the "S" logo for a while, but then the screen gets black. I can't even tell if the phone is on or off...
What's the matter?! I'm at work so I can't re-flash it with Odin...
Any suggestions on this? Please don't tell me it's bricked
Have a good one!
EDIT: The phone is ON now, because the Back and Menu buttons are lit. But the screen remains black and the phone seems unresponsive.

I am having this same problem, I flashed to JP3 and it worked however when I flashed back to JM2 I have this exact same problem, it looks as the flash goes through completely however it doesnt work.
I have flashed, and reflashed, using previous firmwares, restarted my computer, reflashed again, flashed with repartition box checked, flashed with repartition box unchecked,.... all seem to produce the same results,... after flash the phone goes straight into recovery mode... is this normal>??? I am unable to run update.zip, the phone says
Cant open /sdcard/update.zip
(no such file or directory)
installation aborted
Booted into recovery mode and did a factory reset however still boots to a black screen.
Reflash the phone in download mode just produces the same results.... im lost
Update: So I restarted my computer, and went through with the flash, after the phone reboots, it automatically goes to the recovery menu with this error:
update media, please wait
E:Cant Mount /dev/block/stl10
(invalid argument)
E:copy_dbdata_media:cant mount DBDATA
your storage is not prepared yet, please use UI menu for format and reboot actions.
Copy default media content failed
Now at this screen I just select reboot phone.
help please...

hi,
don't panic, it appened to me 4 or 5 times already,
i solved the problem instaling samsung recovery system ver 3 <3e> the e means europe "in my case".
for that i flashed with JP3 "froyo 2.2" and pit 513 because android 2.1 has SRS v2 and dont let us solve the repartition problem, after the SRS pops i selected the option "flash sd card" and after that selectet option reboot "or restart i dont remember" and voila.
if you have any Q? just ask i will try to help
ps: you have to wipe data e wipe partition and format memory and at the end reboot

Hi I got the same problem so I flashed with pit 513 but there is no "Flash SD card" option, there is only format internal sd card option and it gives "can't mount sd card", can you give me some help?

did any of you install clockwork mod?
It seems like clockwork mod not deleting Dalvik Cache. If you didn't made that mistake like me then try UGJG8 Firmware with 512 pit.

Has anyone figured out a way to resolve this.
I am stuck with the same issue

Sorry for not replying earlier... I solved things by just re-flashing with some other firmware version...
Currently running JM5 with ~2200 score in Quadrant (with lagfix 1.8)

I have now had this happen after what seemed like a successful upgrade from the now officially released Froyo for the Bell I9000.
I am very sad but am hoping there is a way to fix this without losing my phone to Samsung for a month or more...
Any help is greatly appreciated and links to downloads are also very appreciated rather than just referring to something and not putting a link to it.
Thanks....

Never mind all...
I gave up and sent it back. I got a free loaner so not all bad...

[Q] bricked

Hi !
today I decided i should upgrade from CM7.0.2 to nb 118. But I first installed latest radio. I did a backup at this point. The radio flash went ok, the phone booted and everything worked fine.
I installed nightly build 118 from ROM manager without google apps, and with a dalvik wipe (no data/cache wipe). The phone booted up ok, but some widgets had disapeared, some shortcuts didn't work and some apps had disapeared too, the autorotation of screen at 0° had been unticked too... I rebooted, and finally decided I should revert to my backup.
That's where the real problem happens : after the backup restoration, the phone is stuck in a boot loop.
I can start with fastboot mode, but I can't access recovery mode, the red exclamation mark is there...
I'm not sure this tutorial : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=751265 is adapted to my situation, should I follow it ?
Thank you for your help !
PS : I'm S-OFF
This should be @ the Q&A section but anyway, here we go:
I just had that bootloop situation myself and yes, you should follow that usb unbrick tutorial. That'll help you. Also, you should try if you can get to fakeflash by pressing VOLUP + POWER while @ the red exclamation window. If you can and you should be able to, search XDA for "fakeflash clockworkmod" or something similar, you should find a CWM image in a ZIP form. Then put that image into your SDCard, rename it to update.zip, go into the fakeflash menu and apply update.zip, it should fly you to the real recovery menu where you can do a full wipe and flash your ROM again.
Hopefully I'm not forgetting anything =D At least that's how I solved my situation and my phone is working fully again!
Hi.
Do you have the update.zip from recovery clock in the root of your sdcard, if so just press volume up and the power down at the same time, or the other way around ;-) when it change picture choose option, install update.zip and you should be in recovery mode
Im a noob, so dont laugh if i have written it the wrong way
Cheers, and good luck.
Jesus chist, it is written in the second post... Damn.

That "Can't open /cache etc." error message indicates that you are in the fake-flash menu. Do you have a working recovery image in the root of your SDcard renamed to "update.zip"? If not, try searching the forum for "clockworkmod fakeflash" or something similar and it should show some topics that will help you.
I recently got my Legend working again from bootloop and usb brick so I'm ready to help you with your further problems that may occur =)
EDIT: And please, make sure that your recovery zip is just "update.zip" and not a ZIP file named "update.zip" cause then it will be a file called "update.zip.zip" =D

I hope you read this and if it isn't fixed yet then take a rom YOU KNOW that works.
go into recovery Go to "mounts and storage" and format SYSTEM. NOTHING ELSE.
Do a wipe and THEN flash your zip.
Remember to NOT go out of recovery when you have formatted the system.
I hope it helps.

Cannot flash roms or restore from recovery

I have looked and done searches for this problem with no matches. Phone stuck in bootloop after battery died. Pulled battery and went to recovery, tried to restore after wiping showed error message for data wipe
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1.
(file exists)
When I tried to restore the attached results show up on the screen.
Any help with this situation would be greatly appreciated.
Try installing another rom. If that doesn't work, try flashing a new clockworkmod version.
Yes, I have tried three different roms and flashing a different recovery with the same type of results. The problem seems to be with data. Everything I try to do including wiping data ends up in an error message.
Hmm. Then you might try going back to stock from hboot and rerooting
Is sd full, or nearly full?

Id start with the newest version of clockworkmod and an new SD card.
Unrooted using the RUU with reverted HTC drivers. Process seemed to go fine but when it reboots it gets stuck in a bootloop with original droid bootscreen. I still have s-off and am wary of removing for fear of being stuck.
You could try flashing super vr wipe and do it that way.
sounds like the sdcard isn't mounting. i would back up the sdcard then reformat it and try again. or try another sdcard if you have one handy i usually keep a spare around just in case.
Look up five vibe fix ...

This kind of thing frightens me to death about flashing a new ROM. I'm dying to get that 2.3 ROM that just posed but I'm afraid of bootloops, whitescreens and error messages etc.
It's really not that bad, as long as you dont touch it while its doing it's thing it works great. I just installed Ovo Community Mod Test RC5 and it is SICK!
You need to update your hboot to .92 first though.

Sounds like something isn't mounting, but I'm not sure if it's the SDcard. Those directories are on eMMC, aren't they? Not sure if this would help, but I'd check to see if it's mounted as read/write. Looks like it's read only.

Dude, use Doug Piston's ROM Flashing Tutorial, here. It's easy.
After the screen shot showing Wiping Cache, also do:
Mounts and Storage - format /system, format /data, format /boot
Advanced - Wipe Dalvik
Then resume at the Install zip from SD Card screen shot...

I followed those directions and flashed the new 2.3.4 without any issues. I was originally on 2.2 rooted with unrevoked3
Much bigger problem. Now that I have run the RUU I no longer have clockwork recovery and cannot flash anything. When I reboot I get the droid bootscreen in bootloop. Frustration!
Have you tried just booting with the sd card removed? Issues with the sd card can stop it from booting
Also if you flashed the RUU your unrooted therefore have no cm recovery. You will need to root again for that.
Yes recovery was gone, attempted to flash clockwork again. When booting into recovery strange bar appeared and screen went black. After several tries with same results flashed Amon ra style recovery and now have this recovery but am still getting bootloops when flashing and having same E: can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (file exisits) error messages. Confident there is a solution but have no idea how to get there. Determined though! Any help is greatly appreciated.
It is saying read only file system . E:Error in CACHE:recovery/log
This is at the bottom of the recovery screen.
Ok, I've said this a few times on here, but I don't see were you've mentioned that you've tried it. Remove your SD card and see if it boots!

[HOWTO#GT-i9000] The way I fixed my phone (E:failed to mount...))

First of all, sorry for my poor english, its not my mothers language, but I hope you will get what I mean.
My experience with errors during custom rom flashing & fixing them.
A lot of people have had this problem, when they try to mount internal SD card from recovery (to access it on PC) they get this error:
Code:
E:Can't mount /sdcard, E:Unable to write ums lunfile (No such file or directory)
I can't explain why its occurring, what is causing it, but from time to time I fixed it by just rebooting again to recovery, or in android, then turn it off, take out battery, then put it back, and boot again in recovery, well for me it was like a lottery, sometimes its worked sometimes not.
Last time I was unable to get pass that error, tried everything but still no luck. So I thought maybe I will flash stock firmware, and its gonna be OK. But no, not this time, I took as usually XXJVU firmware, PIT512, Odin3 v1.3 (with re-partition checked) and let the flashing to begin. In Odin everything was OK, till I got into phone after restart, where its should copy all the media files, and finalize firmware installation. What I got there was this:
Code:
-- cpoying media files...
E:failed to mount /sdcard (file exists)
E:copy_dbdata_media:cant mount /sdcard
your storage not prepared yet. please use UI men
u for format and reboot actions.
Media files copy failed.

After this I tried few other 2.3.x stock firmwares, but all of them got stuck at the same place.
I did a lot of searching on google, I found a few "worth to try" solutions (mostly from XDA members) but none of them actually fixed my problem. And I also seen that many people are getting the same exact thing. So I did a temporary fix, I put an old 1GB SD card into my phone, trough recovery mounted it successfully and flashed CodeNameAndroid, I was able to boot into android, but many things wasn't working, and still, internal SD card wasn't accessible, so next thing was, while I was on my break, I bring my phone to a phone repair shop, and the guy said that he can try to flash it back to stock firmware, so I gave him a shot, later when I came by, he said that he was unable to fix it, so that was where its all ended. But still I didn't believed that my almost 4 months old phone's internal SD card just simply died. So what I did, I went home and tried once again. And here is what I did:
Solution
1. Took the same XXJVU firmware
2. Flashed it using: Odin3 v1.3, PIT512, Re-partition ON.
After that I got into SGS logo bootloop, and the same thing, and I was ready to threw my phone against the wall. But before I still had a hope that maybe I can fix it, so this time I did these steps:
3. Same firmware
4. Flashed it using: Odin3 v1.3, PIT503, Re-partition OFF, and Phone Bootload update ON
And guess what ? Its worked!
There wasn't any errors, nothing, its just booted and I had my phone in service again.
I hope this will help someone who has exactly the same problem, and can't find a way to fix it.
Please, can u upload the 503 pit file ?
When Re-partition is OFF the PIT-file will NOT BE FLASHED by Odin.
Partition Information Table of whatever PIT-file will have no effect on phone.
Most Samsung ROMs need 512.PIT to set correct file system RFS and size of /system /data + + partitions. Not necessary to reset your partitions/filesys every time you flash ROM.
Use 512.PIT when you have ext4 (lagfix) filesys, CyanogenMod, MIUI or ICS ROMs and want to return to Samsung stock.
Bootloader (Sbl) of Froyo and Gingerbread are not the same. Odin will take care of updating bootloader IF PHONE.tar includes sbl.bin.
DO NOT tick update bootloader, just flash PHONE, MODEM, CSC and you'll get updated bootloader.

After applying the methode as described in post 1, it did not resolve my problem. Internal SD still not usable.
When following the above (link to post) all the possible solutions did not work.
Could someone please let me know how to fix the internal SD so it can be used again?
Thanks in advance!:good::good:

Tab 7.7 P6810 SERIOUSLY bricked..!! :(

Hi Folks,
I'll try to be as detailed as possible..days ago, I flashed a custom ROM on my ICS 7.7 stock Tab, however it kept on a boot loop. I made a backup via CWM so I tried to restore back to ICS...can't restore it ("Error while restoring /system") OK, no worries....
I tried to flash the HC and ICS stock back using ODIN....can't do it (in both times, It keeps getting stuck at "factoryfs.img" at the beginning)...starting to get worried..
Tried to use adb shell and e2fsck -cy /dev/block/mmcblk0p9.... no luck (kept getting the "error reading block *numbers increasing* (Attempt to read block from filesystem resulted in short read) while reading inode and block bitmaps. Ignore error? yes Force rewrite? yes" and then nothing happened...tried to wipe/format data...CWM crashed
Tried to flash a P6810 PIT file to repartition the tab...no luck, ODIN still stuck at "factoryfs"
Tried to flash Android Stock Recovery...finally got wipe/format data to work...tried to flash "SkyHigh ROM" based on stock ICS (Remember that ODIN method doesn't work?) it installs, BUT when rebooting, it just stays looping at the Samsung Logo... now oficially Freaked out..!!:crying::crying:
Finally everytime I went to recovery mode, I get the following:
"E:failed to mount /preload (Invalid argument)
E:install_application_for_customer:can't mount /preload
your storage not prepared yet. please use UI menu for format and reboot options
copy aplication failed"
Like I said, I can wipe/format data and cache on stock recovery (can't do it on CWM) and also can flash ROM .zips (can't do it in ODIN)
So, to sum it up:
- Can't flash anything using ODIN (stuck at factoryfs)
- Can't flash using CWM (getting Samsung logo bootloop)
- Can't wipe/format data on CWM, it crashes (althought I can do it with stock recovery)
- VERY BASIC skills in adb shell (don't know to use it very much)
- I know (hope) it's not hard bricked because I can enter Download and Recovery modes
- Basically at this point, yeah I'm pretty sure to start banging my head on the wall
Can anyone help me out on this one..??? It's been 4 days trying everything
Any, ANY help will be deeply appreciated... :crying:
Thanks
have you wiped using the stock recovery? this happened to me before (there's a thread here entitled stuck at bootscreen/boot loop) some let the device drain it's battery, what I did was wipe it using the factory wipe the connect via ODIN to install the stock HC ROM
I wiped using the stock recovery...however, everytime I try to flash HC or ICS stock ROM using ODIN, It gets stuck at the very beginning of the "FACTORYFS" phase....
Last night tried to adb shell but now it gives me the "/system/bin/sh failed: no such file or directory"
I've been reading every single thread about how to revive it, but somehow I can't....
Go to notes forum they have threads how to repartation yr tab n make it work

i got stuck at the 'FACTORYFS' in ODIN no matter what i tried. i had flashed CWM using ODIN, but no ROM would flash.
turns out my usb cable being plugged into a USB hub was the culprit. it still flashed CWM like that, but the first time i tried flashing the ROM with the USB plugged right into my desktop, it worked.
just throwing that out there.
Yes. Seems like you have emmc bricked your tab. There is a fix for it. Search for emmc bug

to add to this. while i was experiencing this, i too could not flash any zip rom via CWM, it would bootloop also.
however i could wipe cache using CWM, which you can't.
Finally got it working... !!! However I could only installed CM9 "successfully" since it keeps freezing and crashing...Is there any stable custom ROM that I can install via CWM..?? (Odin keeps hanging at "factory's")

Root problem I have never had before

Hello!
I flashed a a stock 4 part firmware on my 935F a few weeks before via ODIN. Now I tried to root again to flash a custom rom and for other reasons.
The OEM and USB things needed for root to work are locked in the settings.
I have often rooted my phone, I start ODIN then I choose the TWRP .tar file and after that I directly go to the recovery mode.
First of all while starting the phone with the volume up/power/home button pressed the red text on the top of the screen is missing.
Recovery starts and there is NOTHING in the SD folder. I tried it 5 times now and always the same. The phone tells me that there is no /data folder. There is no folder at all. If I try to restore my handy it doesn't work because the folder(s) is not mounted.
I really don't know what to do. It was never a problem to root the device. I tried to unlock the "AUTO START" option in Odin, too but there is no difference. I tried the TWRP 3.2.0-1 and 3.2.0-2 always the same result.
Has anyone confirmed something like this?
The problem is flashing the stock image again and again takes much time and more serious I don't want to stress my phone to much. Now I am on stock again.
How can flashing a TWRP recovery resulting in deleting anything on the data folder, more precise the complete data folder that there isn't anything to mount or install?
Any help welcome!!
Have a nice day,

Am I really the only one?

Did you flash the dm-verity force encryption disabler?
Yes.
But before I can flash anything the sdcard is completely gone and when I flash files from the external sd card there is nothing real flashable because the internal sd is empty and without /data it doesn't work.
I really do not know. I rooted many times.
Very strange.
If I plug my phone to the computer only the Ext SD Card gets recognized.

TWRP can't see your data partition because it's encrypted and TWRP doesn't support this. You need to format your data partition in TWRP (not wipe), you will lose all your data when you do this.
Thanks, but I know the rooting guides.
The problem is:
Now I am on stock. Not rooted
I flash twrp with odin.
If I let the phone start and put the three finger combination before the twrp starts, but before the twrp is coming the small text on the top ".... is ... enforcing" is missing. Then twrp comes and everything is normal but there is no internal sd, or it is empty.
Exactly the same happens if I click "no reboot" in odin and then go to recovery.
From the very beginning there is no folder. I flashed stock again and again. Always the same happens. I never had such problem before. And I call myself "rooting experienced".
Very strange.

There is no internal SD from TWRP because it's encrypted by default in stock, I explained this in the previous post. TWRP cannot see or mount an encrypted partition. You need to install and boot into TWRP, go to wipe, select Format Data and type the word yes. Reboot recovery and TWRP will then see your internal storage. You can then flash your custom rom. The obvious downside of this is that everything on internal storage will be lost so take what you need off it first.
Thanks.
