Has anybody tried http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=592663 ? I think maybe that TG01-D3DM might do some good to our device, I want to test it in next two weeks (unfortunately without internet =( ). On my old E-TEN X800 the cooked GAPI driver made a big difference, so I hope something would help our device as well =)
This driver is only for Snapdragon cpu
I tried neoS2007 and GFXboost,I haven't seen any difference ...
X2 has already the graphic driver.

Hey all,
I've just got hold of a HTC Alpine and was looking to get either WM5 or WM6 working on it. (Don't stop reading this isn't a "is there a rom update available? question").
I've noticed that people have sucessfully developed new osroms for others like the Blue Angel (I used to have one , but obviously nobody has for the Alpine, so I thought I'd try to knock one up myself.
However, I've fallen quite out of my depth. Can anybody provide some bullets about how the Blue Angel osroms were produced, in fact any guidance or "don't even bother" flames are appreciated.
So far I have done this:
1) I've run up my own extrom and upgraded the radio so I now have a feel for flashing it and such.
2) I've got the old osrom and tried to extract it (hoping for salvagable drivers from wince 4 that might port across) - unfortunatly I can't figure out how to pull the thing apart. I've seen some perl scripts floating about, but if anybody could point me to the latest version of the right one it would be appreciated.
3) I've got my hands on a copy of the platfrom builder for wince 5 (I know both WM5/WM6 are based upon it) - however have now discovered that windows mobile itself isn't included :-(.
I'm probably not even going through the right motions, or it might be plain impossible, but at least I'll know.
Thanks in advance,
Josh
As far as I know they got the rom from another phone with a newer os, transfered the drivers and removed some things that would not work with the ba.
I'm pretty sure that isn't this simple but is something like this
Unfortunately this is a "don't even bother" post.
ROMs are cooked for devices that either:
a) Have a brother with almost identical hardware that got a newer OS. (like prophet / wizard duo)
b) Have a test version of newer OS leaked but never released.
Because driver architecture is different between WM 2003 and WM 5 even if you could take the ROM apart you could not just take the WM 2003 drivers and use them with WM 5 OS .
As for Platform Builder - nothing there. To build a ROM for a device you need its BSP (Board Support Package) which is what lets you compile a ROM for specific hardware. As far as I know one of those has never ever been leaked from HTC (or other OEM).
Plus, to get your hands on a Windows Mobile version of PB (yes it is actually a different version) you need to be an OEM or a "MS partner" company.
Right, well if the driver architecture has changed then I'm pretty much buggered for plan a.
The blue angel is pretty similar driver wise, isn't it? As far as I can tell the only differences are the camera and the lack of a keyboard (obviously ram/proc too). But I suppose the ASICs/CPLDs are nothing like each other. So that plan's probably out of the window too.
It's not looking too hopeful at the moment....

The drivers are completely different between the two devices. While you probably would be able to extract a number of drivers from the Alpine WM2003 ROM, and while (with luck) they could/should work in the (ported) WM5 OS ROM, there is another MAJOR hurdle which would need to be overcome ...

That's exactly the issue - the Alpine, while being VERY similar to the Blue Angel is different enough in the hardware to not be able to use the same code. In every ROM there is a Boot portion which is device specific (XIP section), which initializes the hardware before the OS starts - very similar to the BIOS in your PC. There has been (very) limited success in getting the Alpine to boot using a Blue Angel based ROM, but it HAS been done.
The largest problem is that there is no support for initializing the Radio ROM - i.e. phone support. So, while we MIGHT be able to make a ROM which can boot on the Alpine, we would only be able to make one which (MOSTLY) worked, and would NOT have any Phone/Radio/BT/etc. capabilities. Basically, your Alpine would become a glorified PDA ... only.

Nope ... as said before - without the BSP, and hardware initialization ... it'd be like trying to boot your Mac using a PC BIOS. (Although, scarily - that's getting closer and closer to be the truth ... !!!)
Hi there,
I still got one of these jewel, and I was wondering if a Wallaby ROM would fit in, given both units got the same processor...
Any idea or other suggestion?
Thanks.
unlike windows for pc's where tons of tons of tons of drivers are included
lack of space result in roms for pda's being 100% taylored
including only the drivers required to boot
if one of those drivers fail the device never starts
even 2 HTC devices with the same cpu cant share roms
dont hold your breath about port from htc wallaby to 56x because they share cpu

That's probably the most educational and informative reply I ever got on a forum. Thanks for that!
I searched on the Net and was unable to find anywhere an upgrade for this PDA. That doesn't matter really, given it's quite old. I'll keep it for playing Worms (screen is cool!)
well there may be all identical except hard drive or they may be hardware changes as expansis suggests i posted this elsewhere and got no response so ive opened up this thread as a means to discuss any hardware differences in future models or revisions or to discuss speculation of what maybe changed included at least untill we have a production model to check (please not for dxiscussion of voice its being brougvht up 2many times anyway and it will have voice and if not it would not be a hardware issue only software)

no question of gps but !!!!!! is it just certain versains that have it or ALL the shifts, looking at expansis and on their US site they have 30GB with GPS on UK site 40GB without so is it justg the 308GB or will all models have gps?? http://www.expansys.com/ft.aspx?k=101611

i believe all the versions will have gps, since they use the same chipset like kaizer and polaris from qualcomm
i told you before that the problem is, there is no gps software for vista to work ,so why to advertise something without use, until now.
in the official site they do not say anything for gps but the gps is there.http://www.europe.htc.com/en/products/htcshift.html
*sorry for bud english.
and i said just use tom tom 6 or google maps from WM6 so its no big deal... and maybe someone will make a decent vista software now other umpcs are starting to ship with gps and only vista.
and we dont know for sure all versions will be the same and have gps or other things exactly the same maybe hidden things only time will tell

1.i didn't now that tomtom 6 can play with laptops and pc with external gps antenna..........google maps need connection even not gps in the new version.
2.maybe is hidden in some versions like htc3600 and you can activated after
really interesting question with GPS.
i think there is no jack for external GPS Antenna. And: if you have an Qualcomm Chipset with GPS is not really neccersary from manufactur, to deploy it with internal GPS Antenna. (See angry Users of HTC Wings and Touch Dual)
the other think is: is a interconnection between qualcomm and PC hardware? hehe, really interesting... can they talk together with all functions? ?
a navigation solution on WM6 like Tomtom is better, it dont need so much power like PC hardware and is safely from shocks Problems of the internal Harddisk.
but there a 2 big other questions:
- is there really implemented a full version of Windows Mobile 6 like a HTC Kaiser e.g.?
- what type of Harddisk is inside? 1,3" or 1,8" HDD or solide state Disk?
(harddisk type is really interesting for me, I test at the moment all SSD Drives on the market for replacement in some high end sub notebooks of our company - that´s is the purpose for the project - and evaluate the shift for replacement our sub notebooks

This could have easily been found using the search function. As a consideration to others, please try searching before posting. Thank you.
So, would this work?
http://www.sandisk.com/OEM/ProductCatalog(1320)-SanDisk_SSD_UATA_5000_18.aspx
hmm, your ssd drive from SANDISK has an ZIF connector. maybe the shift used a normal 1,8" IDE connector like cf cards? uhh. or not...
interesting for me: can I install windows XP for our Business too? is there drivers for the hardware available? And: i need a LAN Card for installation via Server
Hello - I just got my Shift yesterday. German Edition.
It works well. The only Thing is I do not get the WLAN to work.
I have 2 WLAN stations with G and N standard activated but I do not get a
connection. Certainly I enabled the WLAN in Vista with the THC Tool.
I also tried to do settings in the device driver.
But Windows Vista still does not find any network ( WLAN ).
EDGE is working when tunred on.
PLEASE HELP - OTHERWISE I SEND IT BACK.
Thank you in advance
Marcus
Send it back (sorry, couldn't help myself)
Hi Markus,
I had the "same" problem. I could not get a connection with my Netgear Router. Then I tried another one from t-mobile, what is its name? Speedport or something and everything works nicely.
So go somewhere and try a different router. Maybe it helps.
S.
I'm using a cheap old modem/router and it works 100%...I would try and different router too borrowed from a friend. You need to keep the Shift
Hello
So I decided to send the Shift back.
I am not willing gaming around with wlan. I spent about 6 hours.
WLAN ist a standard for years and my routers are absolutly standrd.
Why should I buy a new router while I am having some of the best on the market which work with all notebooks and computer and also iphone + htc kaiser ?
I Think they used a very damn wlan crad. Why not using a intel wlan ?
All in all the testing of the shift was funny. A nice UMPC with a very lack of having a Display showing 1024x600 Pixel. The 800x480 are useless.
So here I end my writing.
Much more fun - I wait for the next revision with Intel ATOM CPU.
Hard to know if it was your wlan or the Shift, or you? What is clear is the Shift isn't for you, because experience tells me if you had the issue above and you liked your Shift then you would have invested the time in finding a solution...
1024 x 600 is fine if you have microscopes for eyes...I have connected with about 7 wlans so far, without issue....Intel Atom CPU, might be good, who knows, but might the same too - we are talking low voltage here so there will still be limitations - Intel does not mean perfect by any means.
What we really need for this market is a more suitable OS, not beefed up hardward.
Hello - sorry you are wrong with me
I own even 2 more Samsung UMPCs and are familiar with a lot of mobile phones and devices ( it is my job).
We live in the 2008 and WLAN is a world wide standard.
A device with wlan has just to work.
Also I invested about 8 hours testing with drivers.
I am also windows certified on vista.
Even with this knowledge I did only get a connection to a neigbors wlan.
I own an apple aitport express configured as g+n
and an AVM 7270 with B+G configured.
The last 12 month I tested about 87 notebooks and about 40 mobile phones. All did work at once. Also many HTC devices.
The Shift did now.
Also I own a Sony mini Computer with a 5 Zoll Display and it is just better than the HTC - 800x480 is not made for vista.
Even the Shift startup Windows are not displayed correctly.
Sorry - it is very easy to read on a 1024x768 Display.
I think you just did not see a good one yet.
Vista also can configure the fonts so that is very good to read.
About the CPU - if you once see an AMTOM CPU you will never post something like you did. It is just amazin. I had one to test here.
I think the Shift is a good beta device - last year it woud have been a wow, but it was just released in germany and it is dissapointing.
Sorry !
Best reagrds
As I told you - I wait for Release 2 in some month
Hey man, I'm not upset or anything by your post, hope you aren't with mine, because I didn't intend that
I don't have access to the wonderful things that you do by the sounds of it, so if I have a device that has a error with something I tend to stick with it until I find a solution - I don't really have any other choice. So, when my Shift didn't pick up 3G properly I stuck by and tweaked it until it did. Sorry if I sounded insensitive - I know what it's like for something to not work...very frustrating.
Re the screen - I have seen the hi def wonders out there, and I've seen the blunders like OQO01 (dim and sorta blurry)...I actually like the Shift resolution for day to day use, but I guess if it had the option to support true 1024*768 then it would be better suited to everyone. I think you're right, the next version will most likely have better resolution...
OK, I will keep an open mind about the Atom...maybe it can answer our performance issues for these UMPC's (it's clear Via isn't up to the task either at present), although I will stick with my preference for the OS manufacturers to provide a better option than Vista, or at least a different "type" of Vista. XP is perfectly adequate and would probably fly on this thing esp with a gig of RAM....
I didn't realise until recently the Shift had been announced for so long...so even with relatively new eyes on it, it answered many of my needs - especially the pocket PC side...I paid $1400 for a Jornada 720 when they first came out, and so this device with a PC side, and connectivity at $2000 seems like a fair price. It's all dependant on ones points of relativity I guess.
Anyways, all the best, and I hope you find the right device for you...cheers
Anyone got anywhere running Any sort of Quake on Athena?
I have ....lol....literally a million editions that have been made for XX devices over the years....the best one being I think Dutty Quake.
I used to play against PC's on my old Magician running wm 2003 through Wifi. Almost competitivly.
I have had limited success on Athena, nothing great.
I would love to be in a position to do some work on a port to configure it correctly, there is a great *white screen fix* version for Universals which is VGA and Keyboard ready but it wont run on Athena just bombs. This used to rock on my MDA PRO
I hope someone has already got a perfect version.
LOL, I have probably asked before.
With Michys new ROM running SO F'ing fast - compare it to original windows mobile 5!! My god!!- and with mouse and keyboard through USB host.
I think this would be a good platform for the soft.
How nice it would be if we could get GL quake running on the Chipset *sighs*
I have a great version of GL quake on my N95 8GB, just cant control the fecker properly.
Looks nice when plugged into TV though
Any info would be more than welcome.
Many thanks all, and blessings to MiChY
