i just tried all of them
here's my quick review of all four. Firstly I think they're all really pretty great and far better than we ought to have on the hero.
I found froyd 1.1.9 to be less finished than the other two using today's builds, but that makes sense. froyd 1.1.1 was quite finished, 1.1.9 is prerelease and uses very bleeding edge previously little tested kernels and other files.
I found froyd to be very unstable during first and second run, had lots of little issues and even reset itself once. BUT after that it started running properly. also the 1.1 kernel improved things some, and the 1.2 kernel did seem to fix the crazy clock. Some things were amazing - like how fast it played demanding 3d games. other things were subpar, like app compatibility, app installability, gallery3d, and just simple finished-ness. that last point is to be expected though.
I found fusion to be, well fusion. at times I've thought it was best. right now I'm not so in love with it but it's a really good product. I don't really love the aosp-ness of it though, but I admire the dev's work and his decisions along the way. it's very good and totally road worthy.
cronos as it's also really finished and seems to run faster in general use than froyd yet has more of the features I want than fusion does. Also every app I throw at it works and it's super stable and reliable. and it's still nice and quick for 3d gaming etc.
FROYO_2.2_elelinux_v1.2 just flashed and its Awsome its gona be tight idk i will review it more when i come back from =) DW =)
thanks, nice quick and to the point, i was gonna try cronos froyo anyway but good to hear the opinion of someone who's tried all three.
first of all, this is in the wrong section.
second, i have tried the latest builds of chronos or fusion, but im running froyodvillain, and its great, really fast, stable, no fc's after flashing correctly, im really looking forward to 1.2

well i had a lot of fc from launcher, setting, wifi stoped working, usb
I think this should be understood as an IMHO sort of post by the author of this thread.

but yes, maybe this should be moved to a different area?
i think it is in proper place, as a user experience of roms. dev section is imo better than general hero discussion, as a feedback to devs and other ppl that're looking for best choice, bcause it is strictly about rom releases, not general bout device.
what i can say - since ninpo's 1.2 kernel, froyd 1.1.9 is a damn good product (probably further more we will get in froyd 1.2, but whatever will be - will be).
after proper flashing (with wipe of absolutely everything), it is extremely stable. no fc's, speed really impressive, great compatibility etc... also 3d is cracking!
(had the same issue with unstability and fc's, when flashed without wipe ext, also was much slower than now, after full wipe).
and what is probably best - again teamvillain was absolutely first with new updates (camera etc), other roms are always couple of days after TV.

I always wipe fully before flashing, it wasn't that causing the issues. I was one of the first to download it, could be the original 1.0 kernel that I flashed after the rom before first boot, but it wasn't user error. However as noted it improved dramatically after the first couple of hours of use, flashing further kernels increased stability eventually too.
it wasn't as peppy in the user interface though, and I actually find that the other devs have more frequent updates than team villain does, but they all update quite effectively.
Villain's an effective group - no doubt about it. I actually found 1.1.1 to have the best battery life of all the froyos, so it will be fun to see what happens over the next little while!
Moved to general with expiring redirect in place. Dev is really only for technical development of new roms.
This thread has remained very civil, so credit to you guys. Let's keep it that way. A lot of rom comparison threads turn to flames, let's make this one the exception.
Also, anyone wanting to flame here, don't. Treat this as your warning not to.
Thanks.

The kernel works great on 1.1.1 too
Just a fyi
I had some trouble with my alarm... gonna see if it works tomorrow, otherwise I'll be late for work. Other than that, it's just great.
[POLL] Which gsm hero rom is CURRENTLY running on your phone?
Choose one and we'll see what's going on in the world of our little gsm heros.
I don't see a poll like this for gsm hero - certainly nothing with current roms.
Good idea for a poll! I too would like to know what is happening with our little Hero(s).
thanks
I decided to limit to only one answer, what's running right now, since many of us nandroid and flash regularly we could end up with the 5 or 6 most obvious answers all being voted for by everyone. to me that's just silly.
at least this is scientific: if not absolutely indicative of everyone's favorite rom, at least it's indicative of the current choice.
Could be used for a trend chart if in the future we do the same poll again and compare results.

Dito, and voted as such
note: I kept results anonymous (hopefully) so if you wish to keep your status private you can still vote.
happy to see people posting openly though of course
wow hahaha reload first page of gsm hero development forum and every rom thread's most recent post is my link to this poll.
I wanted to be fair so tried to post the link for every rom that is getting current thread discussion.
but no posts there after my posts, even after 15 minutes or so - I suppose everyone's here voting.
pretty much the results I expected aside from the mass of gb users!
surprising about rcmix and tegro - I know of some users of those roms currently.
wow - you VR12 guys - you could consider backing up (using nandroid) and trying out RCmix or tegro. they're both much newer versions of sense roms that are quicker in some ways and also offer newer nicer features (newer widgets and other good things). but good that you're happy with vr12 still
Cheers

Hey dkelley, long time no speak (again)
Interesting you mentioned VR12... I have been looking into security of the Android platform, and I would strongly recommend people move off Sense-based ROMs, and onto a Froyo custom ROM for now...
I am not at liberty to give details of the exploit (and I don't have full details), given most non-custom ROM devices will sit for the rest of their lives, vulnerable to this, but I understand that the 2.1 ROMs have some pretty serious security holes in the browser system, which appear to be better in the last set of sources I pulled from CM on the froyo tree (for FroydVillain 1.7.x)
So while it's interesting to see people still using VR12, I would suggest everyone on a Sense-based ROM moves to a "proper" 2.2 vanilla ROM. I don't think a Sense UI 2.2 ROM would be safe, so I'd discourage those too. It appears you need something CM based, and pretty recent.
As such, I would urge anyone using older CM-based ROMs (say from before November or October) to upgrade if they are concerned about security while surfing the internet. HTC don't seem to be interested in fixing the vulnerability, but I checked FV 1.7 and it is not vulnerable to this one attack.
If you support the idea of HTC being pressed into updating their phones (remember that EVERY user of the Hero, who isn't on a custom ROM, is vulnerable to any security exploits, which will not be fixed unless they do an update), then check out http://bit.ly/fDGHPV, where I am trying to get some support together before I contact HTC and mobile carriers.
PS Don, I seem to have derailed this a bit... Figured it was perhaps best to post this in here, since there's no point in making a new thread that we want to get many people to do, and you already did the "donkey work" so to speak. If this derails the thread, I'll sweep it out into another thread if you want

Hi....
Do you have any CVE references ?
http://cve.mitre.org/
This is just a blog with without any CVE-refs as I can see.....

Hey Pulser
surprised you didn't send me a warning for spamming the same post linking to this thread in like a dozen gsm hero threads within 5 minutes yesterday LoL
Interesting, and a little scary, what you're saying.
But being the scientific (and slightly cynical) type I tend not to believe anything without either proof or at least further information.
I'll read up on it some - but can you summarize the possible type of damage? such as gathering of private data by parties who know about the exploit? or damage to the phone via intentional cause (again by parties in the know)? or what

I went back to Cronosproject 1.7.2 from gb beta 6. Even the massive headway they made thus far has been awesome with Fee and Ele together I can't see how it can be made as good as 1.7.2. Its way behind on performance and hogs memory with the minimum system and regular apps installed. The battery seems awesome but not much in there to use it. I'll wait till full release or stick with this rom. I can have a desire on wife's upgrade but I fancy something more now.desire is very quick.

agreed but give it time, and disagreed about "hogs memory": using the available memory like crazy is done to speed up performance, it's not hogging anything in a bad way. when something else requests memory that memory is freed up.
gb's memory manager is years ahead of it's predecessors
but yea, it will take a while.
Note - it's at 0.0.7 now and has everything working except camera which they're working on. performance is always improving, all sensors work now, and it's pretty amazing.
I just need a more stable build for now dude. Grafix and app issues made me revert. I'm sure with input on Cronus now they will make it much better. They need to get used to each others methods of building. I love it on there and not many will give it the dedication that Feeyo puts in. Ele is not dissimilar so expect great things. agreed. was just correcting you about the memory hogging thing since it's a good thing not a bad thing.
edit: well, not agreed about stability LoL. sorry I keep doing that . I'm running it and have for days and it's super stable. gui speed has improved a ton now too. you wouldn't know you were in such a new rom if you tried it on my phone cuz I disabled the animatinos etc very carefully in various settings places and use LP and so on.
BUT for me the fastest rom is still cronos eclair lite - it's gui, with LP, is noticeably faster than with other roms. If only it wasn't 2.1 based (with it's EXCEPTIONALLY slow and crappy applications manager and so on).

I just had fc's with too many things. Neo, quad, then regular apps and no market. With minimal apps it was slowing right down. I figured that no matter how good the memory allocation manager if you don't have the physical memory the manager can't work right. I'll wait. Do you have basics like market working?
I never had any kind of lag with 1.7.2. The GUI is awesome. It benches close to the desire.

everything's workign perfectly, no FCs, market's been fine for several versions now for most of us. everything except camera apps and certain specific graphics apps work great now.
neocore's broken, doesn't matter of course, same with quad, it's not relevant to anything. They're apps designed for certain operating system versions and hardware and the hero running gb doesn't fit the bill. those are are irrelevant apps that can be dismissed.
I play lots of games and they're working just great. all productivity and utility apps are great.
audio and multimedia stuff are fine too. not really sure where you were getting FCs but it sounds like it needed a new wipe and reflash possibly.
but then there's that strange thing were not every rom works on everyone's hero - I'll never know why, but I swear it's true
apps2sd and so on are working now (with a patch from elelinux). there's something that's slowing down the gui and animations still, and I accidentally had my gb phone running super fast in those areas when my app2sd flash borked. So I know a solution is possible to that last little bit of performance...

Just wanted to ask you all if it's worth working on SwiftSense anymore? I've had multiple tries at getting stuff to work, and other members of the forum! There's alot of work to be done to it, And I'm going on holiday this saturday for two weeks, then after that, I'll be away alot more... So I probably won't be continuing work on it anymore Sorry to say
Don't have too much fun without me
Although, I'm taking my Netbook, I doubt I'll be on it much...
Also, I'd actually know how many of you run gingerbread constantly on your phone? I don't , I run it for a week usually, Get bored and go back to 2.1 Quarx , My favourite rom
I think that it isn't worth to work on that ... Phone isse is delated to prelink in framework not to our libs - if I would know witch values HTC used I may be able to get new libs that sholud work - complete waste of our time guys

I agree, that sense UI is not worth so much work. My opinion is that we should try to optimize one ROM (2.2 or 2.3) for best performances.
I have 2.3 most time on my phone because output sound through 3.5mm jack is too low and I have to use Eq to amplify it :/

I think it isn't worth. We already have fully-working Gingerbread ROMs with minor bugs. On top of that, I'm not a big fan of the HTC Sense interface. Other than that, it uses much RAM, it slightly slows down the phone, and it will probably shorten your battery life.
This was just an oppinion. I'm not thinking to make you stop porting the Sense ROM. On the contrary, that would be great, but I think not so many people will use it. According to me, a better option is to make another 2.3 ROM.

I totally agree. sense is not too important and it is slow and uses too much system resources.
Just out of interest as there seems to be a difference of opinion on this.
I find CM7 faster, even when not overclocked.
90% of the vote for CM7 is about what I was expecting.
Can't understand why some people seem to prefer the stock rom.
Because stuff like this is subjective. That apart, few cant live without HTC Sense.
Not when it comes to performance/speed (which is the point of this poll) .
A benchmarking app would show a performance increase after flashing CM7.
Definitely CM7........ my keyboard finally works the way it should
I already had this argument with someone else, so not going to go over it again. But, I'll just state the main point I want to make: Synthetic benchmarks are NOT an indicator of real world performance.
And what will happen if it is proved that cm7 has more performance benchmark than stock. Nothing..... And it is not just the performance but also about features.
Just be happier that wildfire got rooted after ages. The waiting is good bcoz it even got s-off. Thanks to alpharevX again.
And thanks for comparing it with stock rom alone.
<sarcasm>
Before root = root root root
After root. = stock stock stock

Er, wasn't looking for an argument, just trying to gauge the general opinion on whether people find their wildfire faster after flashing cm7.
And yes, I'm aware benchmarking isn't 100% accurate, that's why I started the poll.
Not to prove anything, just to get a consensus.
Guys, please, when you say CM7 is better at performance, can anyone with CM7 confirm to run google maps properly ? They run like sh*t on my device. On froyo they were 100% responsive and fast, now they are unusable.
Btw my observations so far, the rom is far from faster, it is just overhyped rom and people vote its faster, because they read everywhere its faster. My opinion. Maybe on more hw capable devices it is indeed faster.
Don't get me wrong, it's very good looking and seems optimized with tons of tweaks and settings, but i prefer rather 100% performance over tweaks...
In fact, the stock rom is much faster in certain situations. (ie google maps, homescreen scrolling)
But the google maps may be some other problem than the rom.
The homescreen scrolling isn't dependant as much on the ROM as it is on the launcher...

Just go to settings>ADWlauncher>screen preferences>desktop scrolling speed
I did that.... I've went through all setings. I didin't mean faster as "faster" lol.
Maybe its the launcher (probably), anyway my point was it's not "way faster" than Froyo. At least on Wildfire.
as for me, CM is much more responsible and customisable, so you can configure it, to be much faster. I remember my first opinion after installing it "omg, stock rom sucks..." and I still think like that. I haven't tried gmaps though
I've been working with the phone a lot and I must admit my initial judgement was seriously flawed. The first thing I tried was google maps and together with not so well tweaked system / gui resulted in my downed mood. Now I'm starting to share your opinion.
I use 'Angry Birds' as a benchmarking app ...... before CM7 I could barely play the thing on Froyo (HTC stock ROM).... the birds were 'thrown' way too slowly (I don't really know if you guys get the picture)..... and don't even get me started on the keyboard..... it's sublime!!!!!!!! I can finally text at a normal human being's pace instead of waiting half a lifetime for a character to appear on my screen!!!!! (Ok maybe I am being a bit overdramatic.... still it's true)!!

I get your drift mate.
My benchmarking app is copilot.
With the stock rom it was so slow it was barely usable.
With CM7, it flys along and works as well as any Tomtom device I've used.
Well,as expected, since i already had ICS on my phone for like 2 months, the ASUS ICE CREAM is a dream come true.(i am not gonna comment about whining noobs who dont even know how to install a clean system).
Now i see the light,i see why the tablets are the future, i feel the smoothness of instant typing in all kind of web pages, the stability of the system (i get a 2600 quadrant score with stock rooted rom but after i have manually removed lots of useless asus bloatware in system, and optimised the kernel and system with rom toolbox).
My thoughts are,what about honeycomb?
I bought the tablet so as to replace my netbook and laptop and profit from all the benefits of android system in a powerfull system.I was not that stupid to think that a tablet is a netbook but....honeycomb made my tablet go on the shelf for like 2 months.
I refused to keep using a device that was not working the way it was advertised.
I tried everything with the abysmal honeycomb. Stock, all the custom roms, all the kernels, all the tips, you name it.
In every 10-20 minutes i aways had one problem.A force close of the browser, white blocks (bbrrrrrr), slow system out of nowhere etc...
So,why they even released a bad written software? Just to keep on with the apple fan boys?
As a consumer, how can we be protected again in future attempts of delivering a malfunctioning product?
Could you even go a legal road?
They say that the all mighty ICS is not absorbed in every device and that google will try to get jelly bean sooner.
What if jelly bean is a new Honeycomb?
Do we have a formal voice and maybe a refund or anything against those kind of politics or we have only the great xda to whine about in a forum post...?

Me, unlike you, have returned to HC. ICS is buggy and tons of apps forclose or simply are not even supported yet.
The dev support is just starting, Kernel has not been released, so no OC or UV yet.
In 2 months or less this will change. But until then HC is the better choice.
I think you'll end up putting your device on the shelf again. ICS is a bit smoother but the things it does are the exact same. It is not a miracle upgrade. It is not completly new. It is not bringing you some new exp. that you couldn't have gotten on HC.

You are semi-correct. On the tablet HC to ICS isn't that big of a jump, but Gb to ICS on the phone end is a huge jump.
This is going to be more of a one OS for all devices, starting with ICS. Instead of having 2.1 compatible but not 3.2 compatible, everything will be compatible, we'll just see Phone, Tablet or TV variants of the same app. Like IMDb, it looks different on my HTC Glacier, than it does on my TF101, than on my Logitech Revue.
ICS is just a stepping stone, nothing more, nothing less.

I think you'll see jelly bean before you get consistency. I could be wrong and hope I am.

I've seen a lot of reports that are saying its ICS, they could be wrong/I could be wrong, But i will say this. When i'm running ICS on my Glacier, Apps [in the market] that show up that didn't before. more specifically, tablet apps show up.

I have -bought- over 500 apps and counting.I have installed all of them, not counting the free apps i use from amazon appstore and only one stupid quotes app and 2-3 g5 entertainment games are not compatible.
How you have problems with ICS is still a mystery to me,since im stating facts.
Imagine the kernel source out and a month to devs, what our eyes have to see.
The ICS is so good that i dont miss custom roms at all and that says something.
The return to the laggy HC with the practically unusable dock keyboard which you wrote one word and the second letter was first and the first letter was second,is even a greater mystery to me.
I hope that google learned from the mistakes of the past and i hope i will never see a honeycomb software again.
Corporations should learn to respect costumers and not doing a 100m race.
ICS is a very good start...

GTA 3 sometimes loads. Sometimes does not.
Peggle loads and dies.
New Game on Nvidia meltdown to mars - Loads and is buggy.
Need for Speed - Any of them. Won't load. Die
I could continue..
All the above running perfectly on HC.
Your 500 apps must be useless ones. At least to me.
ICS will be fine in a month or so. Its not ICS that is the issue. it is the Apps.
I personally do not have "issues" with HC. It runs smoothly. No reason to update until I can OC, UV, and play the games I like...
But hey, Thats just me. No reason you can't love ICS.
I tried the ICS build from Asus but it seems half-baked to me. The Quick Settings look terrible too. I ended up going back to Prime! 2.1.1 because it just seems more polished to me, and the performance and functionality isn't that different.
Once Roach finishes up his ICS ROM, I imagine thats what I'll be using. His stuff just seems so much more finished feeling.

This is a tablet made for doing a variety of things. not just playing games.
And have you ever thought that your issue lays with the developers for not supporting ICS. Google pushes a source code, Manufacturers and 3rd party developers create Operating Systems for us to enjoy. It's the app creators to make sure their apps run with the newest OS.
All of the apps that i use on my Tablet, work perfectly on ICS. I have no reason to resort back to Hc.

It says in^ its not ICS that is the issue. it is the Apps.
I dont call it resorting. i call it getting full functionality. I prefer everything working, I prefer running at 1.5ghz, and I prefer Undervolting. Battery = forever lasting....

GTA runs perfectly and no issues. Meltdown i have downloaded this afternoon and have not used it yet(quite a gamer you are).
But lets forget games and stuff, what do you thing of the internet experience? what do you think about browsing? Is it better worse or the same as HC?
And what about office apps? Are they snappier and faster than HC or the same? or worse?.....
Can you write a big text comfortably in a web page in ICS or do you finger cross not to have force closes and white blocks and lose 40 minutes of your life cause there is no lazarus add on?
Do you feel comfotable to work office in HC or ICS?

For me browsing on ICS is so good, I almost stopped browsing on my computer.
I'm one of the folks that apparently has fully functioning ICS. I have no complaints. But by the above post, there was no way ICS was every going to remotely live up to your expectations. I like OC my tablet as well, but I never had the expectation that Asus would deliver me a stock rom that would do so. I mean do disrespect or criticism to anyone not happy with ICS. But let's just face it, this update had big expectations and hype and could have done everything perfectly and people would still not like it. Nothing that has a certain level of hype or expectation ever lives up to it, be it a tablet OS or anything else. That said ICS is great for me, I have no complaints thus far, and hope that others with problems get them solved, so that they can enjoy their tablet as much as me.
Ill1 I'm with you. Maybe I'm just lucky or we with great working ICS did something different or better, but everything is just peachy on my end.
I have one little bug with the camera, if you have a pin or pattern lock screen setup then switching from camera to panoramic doesn't initiate the camera and eventually fc's.
But my GTA 3 works so do all my other apps. Things are generally smoother and faster.
Next stop is trying to root this thing using Ubuntu so I can be ready to put CM9 on it whenever it comes out

You can turn off the ugly Asus menu in the settings, under Asus customized setting.
ICS for me has been flawless, I dont know what some of you did to screw it up so bad. If you updated without wiping then dont complain about bugginess, do it the right way and then see ifyou have issues.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I love ICS. But I need to be able to fiddle with settings and stuff. Its an addiction. Once a kernal is available I'll jump for good. And I also have a back up of the ICS with all my installs and a copy of the kernel so I can jump back and forth. I love Chrome.
I use a third party keyboard I don't have typing issues. I just saying, HC isn't terrible. Infact I would say its a bit more stable as of right now. /shrug
