it gets to writing signiture and says it cant update this rom. is there a newer ruu from sprint. it used to work till i got my replacement phone in.
I had same issue..
what I did was (and this only worked cuz I had this already done) Rooted the phone with RA 1.5.2 recovery and flashed Fresh 1.0
once I got it to successfully load into fresh.. then I ran the RUU 1.29 and it worked..
still cant get it to let me un root it. it says that it is the wrong rom to do it. is there a new ruu
Have you tried flashing while in quick boot?
sorry to be such a newb. but what is quick boot and how do i get to it
Power your phone off. Hold the volume down button and power it on. You will get a menu and one of the options is quick boot (I think it's volume up but I'm not positive).
With it hooked up to your computer, check device manager in windows and make sure you don't have any missing phone drivers. If you don't then run the RUU.
ok trying that now. and no errors with drivers
still doesnt work as soon as it gets to updating signature it stops. i dont get it. i have done it a million times with no problems. now it wont work
do you have "usb debugging" turn OFF?
I can confirm testing it with debugging off it still doesn't work. I've tried a million times as well, same problem. I'm not sure if we have to flash the stock rom image before doing so, but in flashrec it only gives me the option of backing up image before actually flashing one and I get an error "Backup Failed: Could not run command" not sure if that has anything to do with it
RUU 1.29 CDMA Sprint
Here's how I got it to work. I reflashed mine couple weeks ago with stock sprint rom (orginal factory state). You need to have HTC sync connected first. Once you establish connection than run RUU 1.29. The hero will drp connection than automatically re-install drivers than it will continue to load the original rom from sprint.

I was working with someone who was having an issue flashing the RUU (failing at checking license). I took him in to fastboot and we literally tried manually running the restore step by step. Basically what the RUU does but manually. And it would still fail at the license. It wasn't a driver issue.
But your fix will work for people whose RUU says it can't find the phone after it reboots it.

The one on ppcgeeks? Heh I need to pull that. I used it earlier and found that after using it I had no access to the /data folder. Not huge deal if you are using it to take your phone back to Sprint or something, but no good if you are wanting to use it. I need to fix the script but am swamped right now.
What's your reason for wanting to RUU? Is your phone "with google" branded?

So of the people that have been having the issue where it fails at the licensing issue and gives you: Error[140]: Bootloader Version Error, all the ones I've talked to (only a couple of you) have had "with google" phones. Although all have said that they were able to RUU before and can't anymore.
If you strictly want to return to stock so that you can return the phone then I can help you. PM me.

I just dont understand why its sluggish. It was never sluggish before. I figure by reverting back to stock and then re-freshing it, it should be ok.
You can try just clearing your cache (my app installer in my sig can help you do that) and then flashing fresh on top of itself to see if that helps the speed issue.

I'll give it a shot. I do have a nand backup of my original install before I installed Fresh...I did that prior and then I installed Fresh again...
Didnt work, still sluggish. I did a wipe through the recovery menu so we'll see what happens.
I have an unrooted hero I have had since launch day. I am now thinking about rooting my hero with use of the latest Sprint leak. my understanding is if you update to the leak of even the official builld whenever that may come out, it will close all current rooting holes available. I guess that doesn't mean in the future there won't be other possibilities. do these new build give the same sense of stability as the official roms because we can now use an official 2.1 kernal?
so from what I have been reading there appears to be only one Rom that is based on the current 2.1 leak and that is flipz Rom? I have a few questions or statements before I do anything to my phone. one, will this help get rid of the lag when typing? two, I need to make sure Bluetooth is still going to work as I have a home phone that I connect my cell to when I enter the door. if I decided to flash back to the official release, is that possible?

As of right now; many people are cautious about testing the latest 2.1 leak; because of the concerns you expressed earlier -- having your phone unrooted by the 2.1 leak when you flash the new update. So, with that said; the current 2.1 ROM's are all pretty stable. This new leak, however probably is as well, but again... I don't know whose all tested it, for fear of loosing root access.

No. Damageless ROM's are also based on the latest Sprint leaks. All ROM's you see should tell which ROM they are based off of. Almost all 2.1 ROM's are currently built from any of the Damageless ROM's -- just read the front page of the ROM you're looking into.

1. Possibly. The lag problem is relative to the person/device. Not everyone experiences this problem. However, turning off "Vibrate when typing" apparently helps with the lag issues. YMMV.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm investigating the best way of rooting my phone. I see there are a few ways listed on the wiki, but then i just ran across Fresh Kitchen (http://geekfor.me/new-release/fresh-kitchen-105)? This is suppose to root your phone for you? Is this a stable way of rooting or should i just use the command line mehods? Also, i have read that you should do a nandroid backup of your phone? Not sure if fresh is doing this for you? The other thing i should mention is that i just have a stock microSD card, so I dont plan on using app2sd, i dont think this is a problem correct?
I also see people load their roms using their microSD card and just putting some update.zip file on there. Is this the standard procedure once you root your phone and get a rom loaded?
Actually, Fresh 2.1, and 2.1.1 are the only ones as of right based off of the newest leak (signed with release keys rather then test), Damageless and Treve are currently working on improving DCUpdater, DConfig, and building a new ROM from the release-keys build.
As far as how to root, I recommend the command line method. While the auto-root methods are nice, actually doing it yourself will give you some experience with things you're gonna be using.
Yes, loading the update.zip to the root of the SDCard is the standard way to flash.
No, not using Apps2SD is not a problem, most people use it because they have a faster SDCard, which gives better performance when loading apps.
A Nandroid backup is something that you will do before you flash any update.zip (At least you're supposed to). It's basically an "Image" of your phone exactly how it was the point in time that you made it, so if you flash something and everything goes horribly wrong, you can restore said nandroid, and it will be like it never happened. (The exceptions are flashing a radio and screwing with the PRL/PRI, nandroid doesn't touch those.)

Fresh's kitchen will allow you root your phone and yes it's stable. However, it's best you try doing it via ADB commands, as there will come a time when you'll want to create things for the community and wished you had prior experience using it. I recommend you trying to root via this tutorial HERE If you follow the directions, you shouldn't have any problems whatsoever.
Stock card is perfectly fine; you're able to use Apps2sd, but don't have to.

To try out different ROM's -- the process is to download the file (which is a update.zip file in itself), but has been renamed to match the name of the ROM. All you have to do is; copy to your sd card, boot into recovery, flash ROM from the sd card, reboot.

There's your real answer. Thanks.
I'm having a hard time understanding why i would need the flash recover image in this tutorial (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583291)? I understand i would want to do a backup of the current phones state, but why would i flash anything before actually making this backup? Maybe i'm not understanding the process correctly, but i just want to get "su" ability and then do the nandroid backup? Is the nandroid backup an app i use?
Nandroid is built into the recovery image you're flashing. Before flashing the recovery image, there is no way for you to nandroid.
thanks! after watching the youtube video posting that mad more sense. So i know there is a chance of bricking your phone during all of this, where does that chance increase? Is it during the flashing of the customs roms, not so much the rooting process?
It is safe to say once the "official" 2.1 android comes out there will always be a custom rom based on it? meaning that if chosen by developers here there could be a build off the "official" 2.1 with the only difference is the rooted user is still allowed? I know that most dev are going to change the build in someway to "improve" on what the official build is done.
The only proven way to brick this phone is by flashing a GSM radio, or by having a failed RUU. I've never heard of anyone getting a "true" brick from rooting/flashing ROMs.
Yes, once the official build is released, all ROMs from then on are most likely going to be based of off it.
Ok, stupid question. I just followed the guide to rooting my phone, doing the nandroid backup and copying the backup to my pc. There are a lot of guide to root, but how to you actually flash the custom rom? I saw something about holding down the 'home' button when starting up? Does this bring you to the recovery image again? Do the roms have to be named something specifically?
Place the ROM in the root of your sdcard, and boot into recovery by holding Home+Power. From then select the "Flash update.zip" option and it will show all of the .zip files in the root of your sdcard. Just pick which one you want to flash.
great! thanks for all the help.
ok, so i decided to load damage's sprint leak that would still give me root access, well it doesnt boot. just goes to the "sprint now" screen and reboots over and over again? any ideas?
Did you wipe data and Dalvik?
Anytime you go from one ROM version to another (1.5 to 2.1, 2.1 to 1.6, 1.6 to 1.5, etc etc) you have to wipe, or if there's major changes between rom versions.
what do you wipe the data? i just picked the flash from zip file from sd card?
In recovery there's a catagory for wipe. Wipe data and Dalvik, then reflash and you'll be fine.
cool. thanks. trying that now.
so everything is working now. So i know one of the main benefits of having a rooted is phone is wifi teathering. Are apps like this in the market place or only on here?
There's Easytether and PDAnet. I haven't tried Easytether, since last I've heard it's x86 only, but PDAnet was a horrible experience. I just flashed an Eris based ROM, broke my PRI, and it enabled the built in USB tethering.

open up barcode scanner and go here and then just point the camera at the qr code and it'll download to your phone.

Okay, so I called Cricket to get the MSID/MIN but i get an answering machine that says that they do not offer customer service at this time...is their any other way of obtaining this?
Technically, if you have a phone that's already on Cricket that you have the drivers for on your Windows computer, and you can get it to work in QPST, you could find all of the settings.
But it's not really worth all that trouble if you don't.
Just call *611 from a Cricket phone. Maybe they don't have Customer Service on Sundays?
Or go into an actual Cricket store, if they are open, because they will help you get the numbers too!
sorry to bother, I've been looking at different threads but can't find how to set those numbers on the eris

You need QPST and the Eris drivers. Go to this thread for instructions on how to use QPST. You could also do it with EPST on the handset itself (##778).
http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...an-HTC-Droid-Eris-to-Metro-PCS-(Tutorial-v2.0)
If you're on an Eris-based SenseUI ROM, you don't need QPST at all (in fact, I never heard of it the first time I put my ex-gf's phone on Cricket).
Just dial ##778
If you're on a different ROM, then yes. You may find it best to flash a SenseUI ROM anyway if that Froyo ROM doesn't have ##DIAG (whatever the numbers that line up with d-i-a-g are, I forget).
Put your phone in ##DIAG mode, open Device Manager in Windows, make sure the driver is installed, then in Device Manager, change the COM port of the diag device to like COM1 or COM3 or something low enough for QPST to see it.
Then in QPST, open up your FFA Surf (whatever it's called) phone, and edit all of your settings there.
WAY EASIER to just boot into recovery
make a nand backup
wipe data/cache
flash Ivan's Eris_Official 1.0 or Plane Jane (or something)
Boot up just enough to dial ##778
Put in your settings and PRL file
Reboot the phone
Make sure calls and texts work (after you tell Cricket your serial number)
Boot back into recovery, do a NAND RESTORE of your Froyo rom
stay in recovery, flash the cricket v10 flash
reboot
profit
I work for cricket mon-fri 2pm - 7pm, if you ever need help with your account/features feel free to pm me
I got it! Thanks guys
Hi Folks, please bear with me. Before some screams google/search for it, I have already, and I have a very small window of time to continue to search thru hundreds of threads.
Mods: Because of the circumstances, I have to double post here and in the evo shift section. Main reason for posting here is because there has been more success here and more attention/traffic is paid to the evo, whereas since the shift is the evo child, I figured its harmless to double post. Sorry if Im bending/breaking the rules.
I have an evo shift that at the time of purchased was already flashed over to METRO. My shift has a clean esn and I would like to flash it back over to sprint. Yes, there are guides here, but the only guide I found was how to flash the EVO 4G over to METRO but I dont recall reading how to flash back to sprint. http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...50#post8395950
Then I went here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...3#post14282143 to acquire the qpst tool. The link there is an empty torrent, so no luck.
But the reason I am posting is because I know there are others who want to flash their evo shifts over to metro, and I already have an evo shift on metro. So before I start tinkering around and potentially BRICK my shift, I'd like someone to walk me thru the process of saving a dump of everything on my phone so others can learn how it was flashed or check certain settings in it, or just have whatever rom that it is on. So basically, so the next set of ppl can benefit from it.
All I want to do is go back to stock/sprint so I swap my epic off and shift on. Im curious about the insane overclocks 1.7+ghz, so i can determine which phone I want to sell. Thats it. Hope someone can help me out. Thanks in advance.
Ok, since this is the SHIFT forum, does anybody think this will work?

All you should need to do is run the stock RUU to take it back to the original setup. After running the RUU you should be back to Sprint original. No ROOT. Just like it came out of the box. Check either of the links below to get back to the STOCK RUU. Hope it helps.

Thanks guys, but I guess the other prob is how do I make a full back up so others can flash if they switch from sprint to metro?
Or should I not concern myself with that because its a matter of qpst programming (among other tools)?
lilgrass71- thanks for the link, but i believe i need version 2.7.366,
at x-drivers, they have 2.7.323, which I assume will be slightly outdated to use for the shift. any other ideas as to how to acquire 2.7.366,
i googled it, downloaded a few, and just waaaayyyyy tooo many viruses. I understand majority of AV's will throw a false positive, but I feel much much safer getting whatever app from a trusted source and not just some random file hosting spot where as anyone could have tampered with it. Hell, dont even mind the tampering, as long as someone who is "well known" does the tampering for OUR BENEFIT.
That version will work... I used it on my shift and it works fine. What are you trying to do with it? Just a backup of provision data? Or mess with the memory data?
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA Premium App
If someone can benefit from my backup then I would like to make a complete backup of everything on the phone. If my backup cannot be used, then I will skip that process and flash back to sprint. But yea, thats the only reason why I would do a backup, just to help out the next set of ppl.
Also, since you have used this tool before to revert back to sprint, did you have to flash the ruu that pr posted? or u just used qpst only and flashed whatever rom? im asking because I really dont want to tamper with qpst as that may be a lil more dangerous than just flashing a stock rom.
I believe there's a bit more involved to flash over to Metro PCS. I would suggest just running the RUU and calling it good.
lol, pr, Im not trying to flash OVER TO METRO, im trying to flash BACK to sprint.
Ive tried using the .zip that goes on the sd card, that does not work.
Ive tried using the ruu stock flash utility, i keep getting "cant connect" error. Im running win 7 x64, i've installed the htc diag driver correctly, verified it works, it was on port 8, i changed it to port 9 to see if i would have better results, that didnt work, changed usb ports, that dont work, shut off phone and pc, that didnt work. Im at my wits end. right now, im still browsing thru a bunch of other threads to see what might work.
I have not tried lilgrass qpst way yet, thats my last resort, but I will if i get TOOOO frustrated.
I know that. By RUU I meant back to Sprint. That's what the links I posted are for. Connect to computer with USB cable ( HTC cable, not generic ) . Then launch the RUU from your computer. Should prompt you through the process. The reason I said about the HTC cable is because I've had issues with the generic cables in the past.
If u want to revert back to sprint, made sure the your meid matched the one on the serial number.
Hook up your phone to its com port, open qpst and connect to the phone. Leave that open. Then goto qpst programming and clear out the username and passwords for profile 0 and profile 1. Make sure you write it to the phone.
Then your gonna want to just run thr ruu to get yourself back to stock and run a epst profile update and it will update all your phone programing over the air.
I didn't go back to stock. I use the programs for higher process hexidecimal memory editing but that should do the trick. All the cdma phones work just about the same way when they connect to the network. Don't buy into the you need to buy into the primier data/the phone won't work without this plan bs they give you at the store.

prboy- last night i did use the ruu, i flashed it, it worked, but still had the sprint banner there, but now i have even bigger problems, i will explain a lil later tho.
lilgrass-i did not use the qpst method yet, i used prboy links, but after trying to root my phone, i bricked it, which i now have to start a new thread. boy oh boy, problems after problems.
oh, the meid does match on the box and phone itself.
I know this is possible depending on the phone, but on the Vibrant I have not found a way to install clockwork mod without using USB. I saw that mobile odin was an option for some samsung phones but not the Vibrant.
My usb port is dead, no warranty etc. I bought it for 70 in like new condition with knowledge that the port was bad. I figured that the port needed to be soldered back down. But after taking the phone apart, I don't see anything wrong with it. Its not loose on the board, but the socket itself is loose inside.
The baseband is KA2 Eclair. I got it rooted with the oneclickroot tool.
On a side note, the phone also came with pictures of the seller and all his girlfriends naked . Not pretty
So let me review what you want to do, you want to install CWR without having a USB port. Seems easy enough.
Firstly, find a app that will let you connect to your phone to your computer, apps like Dropbox, Box, and this app i put up on these forums a bit ago will do more than just the job HERE
install one of those, which ever you like. I'll use the MIUI File Manager as a example throughout this post because its the easiest.
Open the app, go to the FTP and start service, go to your computer open MY COMPUTER and type in ftp://all your #'s
Put this file in your ROOT meaning just in sdcard/ no folders just drag and drop it in there. DO NOT RENAME,EXTRACT OR ANYTHING TO THE .ZIP just put it in the sdcard/
*Thanks for the CWR file from Woodrube and S15*
Now go into Recovery mode on your phone
Power + Volume up and down ( i think )
Press REINSTALL PACKAGES
It SHOULD say something like booting into clockwork recovery.
it will reboot, if it goes to clock work recovery, GREAT. If not, press Reinstall Packages AGAIN and it should directly go there.
Just reply if i'm explaining something wrong or if you need more help.
Or you could just download and install rom manager and flash clockworkmod through there. No offense xriderx, just seems like a lot of work to just install cwr that a single app can do as well.

To each his own, Rom Manager never has worked great on my phone. Even bricked it completely once and I don't believe it was user error.
Relevant guide, +1 cookie. One suggestion though, organize the steps a bit further so there is a clear distinction between steps.
ie:
• Now go into Recovery mode on your phone, Power + Volume up and down ( i think )
• Press REINSTALL PACKAGES. It SHOULD say something like booting into clockwork recovery. it will reboot, if it goes to clock work recovery, GREAT. If not, press Reinstall Packages AGAIN and it should directly go there."
Anywho, to the OP: Since it's rooted, why aren't you simply downloading ROM Manager from the market and installing CWR from there?
edit/ beaten
Don't get me wrong, your tutorial is spot on, I just never had any problems with ROM manager before so I threw it out as a suggestion.

As far as the port goes, Eugene, Krylon360 and myself all fried ours when we were porting the V4G - so you may not visibly see anything wrong with it at all.
Thanks guys, I ended up semi bricking the phone . Even though it was my 6th droid device. Not sure what I did, I was in recovery and everything was working, then went to reboot and it was stuck on the Galaxy screen, could no longer get into recovery. Too bad that USB port was out . I ended up just reselling it to a guy for parts and still made some profit off it. Shame though, that AMOLED display was beautiful. Ended up getting a G2X yesterday for 195, just missed one at 150 on craigslist. Already got it up with CM 7.2 with a minor OC. Hopefully towards then end of this year I might be able to get a Galaxy 2 for cheap.

Please switch to Edify scripting (updater-script and updare-binary) to create working update zip packages.

I don't think it is possible to downgrade to froyo from CM7 without ODIN. I might be wrong but that is how i remember it.
Though i did find this thread..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1149158
But i don't know how that worked for people. You might wanna research a little bit more. IMO you are better off going to ICS.

Just use Odin, don't shortcut it. The OP here has a very very basic idea of the reason and necessity to change these files, and has not provided a complete set of steps in two different "guides" he has posted here, and nobody has been successful as per the reports.
Bottom line, save both yourself and dev in the future a headache, and just use Odin.

Just a reminder to some who have USB port problems. I'm not trying to insult anyone's intelligence here but remember Samsung phones are picky about USB cables.
I know because my phone was Semi bricked while doing Odin. Turned out my original Samsung cable went bad halfway through Odin'ing a new bootloader. After two months of playing with it I tried literally 5 different data cables that all fully worked for other phones and a few cheap off the street cables. Some would not even charge my vibrant but would work fine for data and charge on my wife's LG Quantum. Hard to find good micro-USB cables here in Peru. Finally I ended up modifying my original cable with another cable's micro-usb connector and wrapping a separate ground wire around the shield to get it to work. Samsung phones must require really good shielding to communicate and possibly not all cables have the shield connected on both sides or are properly shielded.
