Changing between roms

Hey, Im new to moding my G1, I used the walk through found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=533731
I like the whole look and stuff of the JACHero rom but its a bit slow for my taste. So my question is how do I change my phone back to the way it was but keep the root access and stuff. I did do a search but being new I'm not entirely sure what exactly I'm looking for.
So if you have a link or somethign that would help me that would be great. Thanks.

Try running Jacxhero1.2 its a lot faster

If you have cyanogens latest recovery image (linked in my signature) you just download the zip file of the next rom you want to try and put it on your sd card.
Power off your phone, start as you hold the home key, go to "flash any zip on sd card" and select the zip you downloaded. Go through the flashing process and you will have the new rom without losing root.
If you run into problems with a new rom, wipe and reflash.

Thanks I got it now. I thought it might be that simple but I didnt wanna brick my phone so I figured Id ask.

Since Im on JF still, if I wanna switch to Cyans, I wouldnt need to wipe would I? Since the roms were based off the same if I recall? Would it be like a upgrade or would it be more a fresh start but just the apps intact?
Also for emulators.. JF vs Cyan, is there a diff in speed?

You shouldn't have to wipe if coming from a JF ADP-based ROM, otherwise, probably. If weird things are happening, try wiping. You can also try the permission fixer script linked above. If you are coming from an HTC-based ROM like Hero or Sapphire, you are going to have to wipe.

Yea I know that which is why I said if I recall. However with so many builds now, something is bound to glitch and its always safe to check what issues others may have had going from jf to cyan, but wont matter really jf is about to release a new build if I read right. =)

New to rooting and upgrading ROMs

Hello, xda!
I've been around on the forums for some time, flashing and messing with ROMs before, but with an old HTC Touch Pro. So forgive me for seeming like a leecher.
I've come here to ask a few questions reguarding Andriod roms and flashing/upgrading procedures. I'm comfortable with using RUUs to upgrade, but who isnt...
I've had my HTC Hero for about 2 weeks now and I accidently bricked one already. I've rooted manually once, and got no signal on the stock Sprint ROM so I tried to go back to the original flash recovery but killed my phone instead.
Could someone help me out. I've read guides and been very, very anxious to upgrade and root but as you've read, I've already bricked my phone once so I'm pretty cautious now.
From what I understand, I need to root to 1.2.3, NAND backup, WIPE sd card & phone, then flash damage control's rom.....
So do I have it right or should I read a bit more?
Any help and tips from some experienced flashers would be much appreciated. Thanks!

First off; we're happy you chose not to give up and came back a second time.
What you do need to do is; 1) Root and flash a Recovery image 2) Make a Nandroid back up, 3) Wipe ONLY your phone (not your SD Card, unless you want to do Apps2SD) and 4) Flash the ROM of your choice.
**The rooting guide I linked above is the way I prefer to do it; via adb commands. However, you could also you use Flipz's kitchen to do all of this for you.

I was seriously nervous to start the process as well. As I told someone else, being nervous is a good thing. That just means you'll be careful.
I seriously recommend reading this thread and following instructions. Do not skip steps, do not pass go, do not collect $200. I've personally used the Windows guide and the Linux guide. Both are very well done and I can verify that they work.
Beyond that, the Search function is fantastic and provides lots of information. Don't be afraid to ask questions, either. Most of us are nice and like to help, even if we do call people n00bs.

I'm using the 2.1update1 sprint beta ROM right now so should I revert back to the 1.56 and THEN do all this or can I just jump right in. I've always been confused as to which rom needs what flash rec root file or w/e.
And yes, I do want the A2SD thing as thats one problem I'm having right now. I've only got 16MB of storage left of my current storage area but my 8GB sd card is almost empty except for a few songs and pictures. Also, should I upgrade my sd card to a higher class if my 8GB is a class 2?

Also, I mentioned that the last time I tried to root, I had no service after I did so. Why is that and what do I do to fix this? I couldn't find anything on this in google searches.

Some people say to toggle airplane mode on and off. Some people say reboot. The last time this happened to me I just played a video game for ten or fifteen minutes and it fired up.

I've not used apps2sd myself, but I'm told the higher class card the better, for obvious reasons.

yes.. a faster class sd card is highly recommended!!! other wise with a2sd, you might see more lag... and issues.
I personally, would not do a2sd at the same time as you upgrade. finish the upgrade first. make sure all is good...
then do the a2sd. and do a nandroid backup again before.

So I just tried to go back to 1.56 with the signed RUU that sprint gives out and it gave me an error. Failed to load bootloaded or something similar to that.
Remember, I'm on the 2.1update1 beta release of sprint's rom but I wanna root and flash to DamageControl's 2.1.
I've tried looking into how to root my current 2.1update1 beta ROM but I didn't come across anything worthwhile.
Anyone know whats going on???

What steps did you take to use the Sprint RUU?
In order to run the Sprint RUU, you need to do:
**Make sure you have the appropriate drivers to detect HTC Sync**
1. Install HTC Sync on your computer
2. After install, open and leave the HTC Sync Window open
3. Connect your phone; and click on the sync option. You should be able to sync, if not - then you're having driver issues.
4. After you've successfully synced, NOW run the Sprint 1.5 RUU.
5. Upon a successful RUU, you'll have your phone back to its factory settings.
Now you can reroot, flash whatever ROM you like, and flash any/all add-ons.

As far as the signal goes, the following are from the Fresh 2.0d install page.
A reboot after the first bootup finishes is recommended, especially if you were previously having PRI/PRL problems.

If after flashing you end up with any data issues then first try rebooting. If that doesn’t resolve it for you then try updating your profile and PRL. This is a side effect of the different PRI’s and PRL’s that people have ended up on. You may actually need to update your profile and PRL a couple times to get everything going but I promise it will. You should end up on PRL 60663.

I personally had no problems, but I was flashing Fresh, not Damage.

Ok, I've got it rooted, and nand-backup stored on my PC.
DamageControl says to wipe before his install. Do I "wipe data/factory reset" or "wipe Dalvik-cache" or any other options?

If its the same as Fresh, they want you to do a Wipe data/factory reset

Success! I've got the phone rooted, at least I think I do, and flashed to DamageControl v2.08.
My next task is I really want to get my apps to install to my sdcard. I've got a 8GB class 4 sdcard. Should and can I put my apps onto this? I've heard that the hero doesnt even read and write faster then 2Mbps so I'm good, right?

Not sure if I'm rooted. I've installed a few apps that require SU and when they try to do a "SU Request" the screen sits at a black screen with that title at the top.
Any idea on whats going on?

If you were able to flash a damage less rom you're rooted.
On the black window there should be am option on the bottom to allow, select it.

The black screen for SU is caused by not having USB Debugging turned on as it is required for superuser permissions. I have not tried A2SD because I only have a class 2, but have read that unless you have a class 6 it can be slow.

[Q] All I want is Frodo 2.2 + root...but how???

All I want to do is upgrade to Froyo 2.2 and retain root so that I can use Wireless Tether. I've been reading several different EVO/Android forums but it seems like the more I read, the more confusing it gets. I'm still a noob, but here are my questions so I hope someone can lay it all out in the open for me.
Currently, my EVO has Unrevoked3 applied so I'm running on the "updated" 2.1, and I have root access and wireless tether is working as of now. Phone specs are:
Firmware version: 2.1-update1
Baseband version: 2.05.00.06.10
Build/Software number: 1.47.651.1
PRI version: 1.40_003
PRL version: 60665
1) What is the best/most reliable way for me to update to 2.2? Can I use Unrevoked Forever to do so? Or do I have to use some manual method? Toast's method? ROM Manager?
2) I read the steps for installing on the Unrevoked site, but I don't understand the terms it uses. It says to "flash from custom recovery". First of all, how do I access this custom recovery tool or whatever? Second, some ppl said they use a ROM Manager. Other sites say to "boot into recovery". Still, some instructions say boot into Clockwork....How do these method differ? Or are they the same? Which do I use???
3) One post says "After you unrevoke4, you can use your custom recovery image to flash a rooted 2.2 stock rom". I dont understand. A ROM is an image...so how can I use an image to flash another image?? makes no sense =\

Use Simpleroot to fully root. Then flash SteelH's 2.2 Stock Rooted ROM/

Power + Volume Down while the phone is off boots your into the bootloader. You can then enter your custom recovery from there. Or you can use Rom Manager/Spare Parts to boot into recovery directly within your phone. Clockwork is a custom recovery; AmonRa is the other custom recovery. Use either one.

You need to install a custom recovery, ie AmonRa or Clockwork (an image) so you can flash a ROM (another image)

Recovery is already in your phone, but you need to flash a custom recovery after you root. Simpleroot will allow you to flash a custom recovery on the last step.

Not relevant, when you are on 2.2, you won't be notified of OTA updates. After you root, NEVER accept any OTA. Wait for the updated rooted roms.

Don't use Unrevoked. Root using Simpleroot and flash your downloaded ROM afterwords.

No one can really prove that an updated RPI/RPL affects your phone in positive ways. Your RPL will be updated. RPI will be 1.34 after Simpleroot, this forum just figured out how to get 1.40 RPI today (go read the dev forum)

Wimax and Radio updates improves your 4G/Radio/Data performance. They should be flashed after you flash your rom.

Nandroid backup creates a complete image of your phone. Titanium backup only backs up your apps.

OK then, all the LOTR references aside, I was in your shoes not to long ago. You could have done a little more reading or googling (something like "how to root EVO"), as these forums usually contain a number of threads with titles something like "Moron-proof guide to....."
Anyway. Unrevoked seems to be considered a somewhat incomplete root according to most ROM threads (I don't know the details to speak intelligently on
the matter).
Here is what I did, and it worked well.
1) Get SimpleRoot. This will let you root your phone for real.
NOTE: I don't know if you need to get rid of unrevoked before this; maybe someone more knowledgeable can chime in on this one.
2) Step 2 of SimpleRoot is to flash recovery. There are two options; I chose RA. There are a few threads that talk about pros/cons of each.
For simplicity sake, I think of "recovery" as a program that lets you do lower lever system stuff, like flash files, do backups, etc. The general way to reach it is to hold VolDown while powering up you phone, then selecting "recovery".
Anyways, after you've flashed recovery, you'll be able to flash whatever ROM you want.
3)If you want stock 2.2 get THIS. Get the radios as well. Generally there are instructions with the ROMS, READ THEM.
You should have three zips. Put them on your sdcard. Then in recovery select flash from zip file (or something like that). Do that for all three with reboots in between.
You should now have the latest stock ROM and radios.
There are a ton of other ROMs out there. NO one will be able to tell you which one is the best, so don't ask.
Wireless Tether - the newest version is floating around here somewhere (pre7). It works well with the rooted stock 2.2
The PRL/PRI debate is still going on. You can read the million threads and see if you want to worry about it. I don't.
As far as backup goes, the more knowledgeable folks can speak to the details. A simple way of describing it is nand backup (from recovery) is like a ghost of your system, where as Titanium is more of an apps/settings kinda thing.
I strongly suggest reading the guide threads to gain more insight.
And, of course, I didn't come up with any of this stuff. If you find anyone's work helpful, then you should thank/donate to them.

It's funny that I have no clue how to do this, because I full-rooted my EVO with the first firmware and never looked back. I've just been running custom recovery and custom roms ever since. I need to root a friends phone soon, so I guess I'll have to learn.

After much lurking and wiki reading I would like this stickied as well.

To get Frodo 2.2, you would have to write a novel, placing him in a setting similar to The Terminator. From there, create a back story on how his first version was inferior and lacking superior abilities, dubbing the need for a new version. After that have a fight scene of him going against his creator, thus needing to make him version 2.2. The non violent version. From there he would have the dramatic speech in a weird code of language.
Simple root, click click, RA, click. Power button volume down. Wipe, wipe. wipe. rooted rom zip, radio zip, reboot, power button volume down wimax zip, reboot.
After that Frodo will walk away into the sunset, in search of the future version of him, Frodo 3.0 - Fighting in the conquest of his arch nemesis, Apple Conner.

When I found out that 2.2 wasnt coming out from this phone I decided that I would root the phone and load a 2.2 ROM, etc. etc. So I started researching all of these about 2 days ago... and for the past 2 days I have read so much information on this that I am now currently so mixed up and lost. There are soooo many different ROMs, different ways to do this, that, etc. I see some people do one thing that it works great, another person do the exact same thing and they havent the same luck.
Even when getting ready to just root the phone, I found an awesome post that had great information... but, then when I looked at it the post was from 7 months ago and in the N1 forums. So, I started to 2nd guess.
I suppose basically what Im in need of is possibly a normal/basic recommendation to get moving on this... Would a possible recommendation be to root the phone with the 1 click root being run through a file manager, then create a nandroid backup, then go with something popular like Cyanogen6 RC1? Its just that mod -seems- to be what a good bit of people have, and problems seem limited on it. But then again, ive read about 10 other ROMs that appear to be just as good, and people like just as well... so agian, this choice leaves me frozen as well.
Im just so overwhelmed with information ive just about frozen up... I think it need to bring it back to a basic simple plan to get moving on this. Everything I read in these forums sounds so awesome and just plain ole fun.... but like I said im currently frozen/lost. Please help if my request isnt too much...

Just do as it says and follow directions. I rooted both of my brother's phones this way. It works.
Then do as you were thinking: nandroid then install CM6 RC1. It will probably be your best bet for a solid 2.2 experience.

here's what I posted on my carriers facebook page. I kept things simple and to the point, and the point was to install 2.2 on a hero.
1. go to settings, applications and check allow installation from unknown sources.
2. install bar code scanner from the market if you don't have it.
3. scan the qr code from here: http://bit.ly/d1f0RN
4. download and install the app
5. open universal androot and click root
6. go to the market and download rom manager
7. open rom manager and click flash clockwork mod recovery
8. click backup current rom (you can always restore your backup later to go back to exactly how your phone was)
to load the rom after rooting:
1. download both the rom and google apps from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755795
2. copy the zip files to your sd card
3. open rom manager and click install rom from sd card
4. choose the rom file you copied to the sd card and click add zip, then choose the google apps file you downloaded earlier. Click ok and choose backup current rom and wipe data.
5. Enjoy android 2.2 on your Hero!!
(be careful restoring stuff using mybackup, open source roms and htc roms don't store data the same way. applications are safe to restore but system settings can potentially break things requiring you to wipe and reload again)

Not because it is my root method, but I would actually recommend using my root method and following all of the steps. It has you flash a custom recovery and patched boot.img so you keep full root via adb.

CM6 is the ONLY 2.2 ROM for the Hero at this point. But know that it doesn't have much of the Sprint/CDMA or HTC SenseUI functionality and stuff that you're used to from your current phone....like updating Profile and PRL; Sprint Navigation/Football/Nascar/etc.; your Contacts, Dialer, Messaging, and some other menus will be a little different....that's just a few things off the top of my head.
So if you kinda LIKE the way your phone is now (except maybe for some lag/slowness), CM6 won't be a very similar ROM. But you won't know unless you try it out Just offering some helpful info. Good luck -- we're here to help.

Awesome... the community here is absolutely incredible. Although I am literally tryin my best to read the ****in manual, I continue to fear that im reading something too old or outdated, or that there is something newer (easier) that I should be doing instead. I did the rooting with the 1click which was so simple... I cant believe I even spent that much time on it.
Thinking next the nandroid/recovery image thing would be a breeze, but it appears to almost be the hardest step. I see on most posts that they always tend to mention Nandroid for backups - is there a particular reason that I should use that one? Some other ones appear to be easier, but not as interesting or fun. However, im fearfully coming across a lack of exact guides that explain the process.
I truly think that once I can get the recovery image done, and I can start trying out other ROMs and such... this will become too much fun. But again, im getting so mixed up by should i do this, that, or maybe this... or wait, is that too old of information?

Download ROM Manager from the Market. From ROM Manager you can flash ClockworkMod recovery or Flash Alternate Recovery (I prefer this option RA Recovery) there is a newer relase but this works fine.
You can then reboot and go into recovery, back up your system as it is right now, that way you can always go back to the basic root version that you have right now. That my friend is a Nandriod back up. now you can install a ROM of your choice, once it is installed and functioning the way you like make a Nandriod back up of it, that way you always have a good platform to start from if anything isn't playing nice.

I know exactly what you mean. I've rooted my Hero the day the universal 1 click came out,but as yet have been reading everything I can on which new Rom to install first.
I went out and bought a new 16 gig sd card for more storage as well. I've been trying to read up on how and what is the best way to do all of the various partitions on it cause some say to just have a ext 2 partition,and others say have a ext3/4 partitions on it.Unfortunately I haven't found a easy way to make this happen except by using the FroydVillain 1.4.3 rom and I don't know if it will work with a cdma Sprint Hero or not yet.
I love the phone,and want to upgrade it to the best stable over clocked rom that will allow me to use it for everyday usage,but it doesn't look like it is going to easy as rooting the damn thing was. Seems to me that you need to be a programmer in Linux to make it work the best

Awesome! Okay perfect... it worked perfect! I know have CyanogenMod running - yeah, it def different. Seems like it will take some time to get used too. Esp since its so far from SenseUI off the bat... err well, just the way that it handles things and such.

[Q] Need with picking a ROM and more

Okay, so I've been reading for a couple days now, and I know the exact process that I want to take to Permaroot my MT4G and get S=Off, and I understand very clearly what those terms mean and why I want them.
Once I started looking into what to do beyond that, I got really, really confused.
If someone could refer me to somewhere so I can read more, I would really appreciate it.
For starters, I don't understand what flashing is. I also don't know what pushing files via the adb is. I don't know what the difference between a ROM and a kernel is.

I guess I'm just confused about what to do now. Should I now set up the SDK on my PC and configure the ADB? Or should I flash Clockworkmod and do a nandroid backup? Neither?
Once I've done that, should I find a kernel, a ROM, or both? I know I want Gingerbread, I want OC capability, and I it stripped down (missing bloat), but I also want stability and for things like WiFi to work. On top of all of those questions I posted above, does anyone have any recommendation for a ROM/kernel like that?

ADB is a commander center/protocol (if you will) that allows you to control your phone via a PC/Mac/Linux. You can push files which would be taking the file and "pushing" to the phone. Or "pulling" files from the phone and putting them on the computer. It's simply as it states, pushing and pulling the files.
To see what a Kernel is read This.
A ROM is the phones physical Operating system. Similar to what Window, Mac or Linux world be.

Before you can flash Clockwork Mod you need to root your phone and turn s=off. For one of the methods, - before you can start you need to set up the ADB (Android Debug Bridge). See my signature for the quickest and most painless way to get that set up. You will also need VISIONary.apk. A quick Google Search will find it for you. Link

If you want a 2.3 based ROM you will need to flash Recovery image 3.0.0.6, link can be found in my signature, and hit up the development section to read reviews on different ROMs. I personally like the plain AOSP look so that leave Cyanogen(mod). But i know TeamRoyal has put together some newer ROMs that i haven't tampered with yet.

I do everything on my phone through CWM (clockworkmod) or terminal emulator, so there's no need for a PC, unless to download the files and transfer them to my SDcard, as I don't understand adb. Anyways, I'm gonna explain this very short and sweet cuz I was once in your shoes, and remember how much I had to read to understand something That could've been explained so simply.
Think of it this way. You're building the software version of a car. Now, if the whole car is the ROM, then the engine is what would be the kernel. And flashing would then be another word for installing , Now, a toyota with a ferrari engine, would be a custom ROM. While a toyota with a ferrari engine and BMW insignias all over it would then be a custom themed ROM.
**Remember, you can never install a car on something, but you can always install something in a car**
Ex. You can never flash a ROM on a kernel, but you can always flash a kernel on a ROM.
Anyways, first off, you will need CWM recovery to flash. Get it from the market. In the app itself, flash (this is the "flash" in the app) recovery 3.0.0.6. This will flash (this flash is not in the app) anything; any ROM, any kernel, etc. as long as its a FLASHABLE ZIP.
To boot into the recovery (the place you do flashing), hold both volume down and power buttons down as you either turn on or restart your phone. The screen you see is the bootloader. Choose recovery using the volume buttons, and use the power button to select it.
Going to flash a new ROM? Do a factory reset (in recovery), wipe cache (in recovery), and wipe delvik cache (this is in advance in recovery). Then install zip. Its pretty straight forward from there.
Going to flash an updated ROM, skip factory reset (as this deletes all data on your phone) and do the rest.
After you've flashed the ROM, you can now flash the kernel.
Note that, kernels are ROM specific. Read what kinds of ROM's the kernel is for before you flash it.
There, easy as pie, yeah? Hope that helped.
I recommend cyanogenmod 7 (Gingerbread based ROM) with faux's kernel (Gingerbread based kernel)

1. Glad you're reading before doing. What a welcome change of pace!
2. Flashing is the process of installing new software. We "flash" it to the phone's memory.
3. ADB is using a computer to control the phone via command-prompt from DOS. Push is a command which sends a file from your computer to your phone. Do a search, there are lots of good guides on ADB. TrueBlueDrew made one just recently that I highly recommend.

4. Start with Clockwork Recovery and a nandroid backup. That's good practice. CWR2 is compatible with Froyo (2.2) ROMs. CWR3 is compatible with Gingerbread (2.3) ROMs. CWR 3.0.0.6 is compatible with BOTH. Very convenient.
5. I say start with CM7. It's extremely stable, even though it's still in development. A ROM is a complete OS replacement for the phone. ROMs contain kernels, which control the most basic hardware, such as processor. If you flash a custom kernel on your stock ROM, you can overclock it more. You can also flash custom kernels on top of custom ROMs for different battery life, clock speed, etc.
To be honest I don't even bother with custom kernels since this phone is so damn fast out of the box I really don't see the point.
QUICK TIPS FOR CM7 - On your first boot, let it sit for 5-10 mins before setting up. There are background processes running and interrupting can harm stability. BEFORE you sign into google for the first time, after it's finished sitting, reboot. This will clear out any wifi glitches and give you smooth sailing.

People install custom kernels because they can have fixes for bugs, help with battery life, overclocked frequencies, no lags, etc. Otherwise, you can just flash the ROM, and if you're satisfied with the kernel its running on, then obviously you'll have no need to flash a custom kernel.

This is pretty much spot on. The developers have included kernels that they feel make the OS preform at it's peak. and most of them will allow for overclocking. However on some of them you may need to use a program called "setCPU" to adjust the frequencies. Cyanogen(mod) will have this built into the ROM natively. However most of the veterans will not promote running your phone in an over clocked status 100% of the time. most of us leave the phone at 1Ghz or slower. There are physical reasons, ie the constant expansion and contract of the chip isn't good for the mother board.
If i were you i'd stick with the Stock Kernel and leave it running as it. That way the developer can adjust their ROM, if you use an 3rd party kernel they aren't familiar with the coding so it's not going to act correct.
I'm not putting down what the kernel coders do, they do an awesome job. but for a n3wb i'd leave well enough alone.
