So I've been holding off on applying the leaked OTA, but I figured I would confer with you guys and get some advice.
What are the benefits of applying the OTA? What does upgrading hboot to .79 do?
I'm using CM6 and didn't use the camera for video anyway, so the 720p video capabilities don't really concern me.
Any advice would be appreciated.
I did some searching around this forum and androidforums, but all I could find were horror stories about people bricking their phones.
I installed the leak ota, had no problems with it, used the camera for a little bit but now i'm on CM6 so the camera upgrade doesnt effect me. I have noticed that my signal is a little better. At home i was around -70 to -80 dBm compared to -50 to -60 now. At work i'm between -90 to -100, compared to not having signal before.
Personally i would suggested holding off, you already waited around 2 weeks to think about applying the ota and if the rumors of the offical ota are true, we will be receiving froyo in 2-3 weeks. Might be better off to wait until one of the devs takes the offical release and packages it up real nice for us.
Yeah. I live in a city, so signal strength isn't an issue for me.

+1, the OTA was neat and stuff, but the 720p is fairly choppy, and if you're rooted you can already do the wifi hotspot. I didn't see a noticeable increase/decrease in signal, but that could just be because of my coverage area. I ended up rolling back the install to stock+root once it was obvious the leak wasn't going to be deployed.
I'd wait till 2.2 with the update.
Seconded
I agree ... I see NO reason why people are using the leaked OTA, a hacked OTA, a kluged FroYo, etc AT THIS POINT (of course if you had already installed, so be it).
Honestly, at this point, wait the week and see what happens. A proper Verizon OTA will not suffer from signal, radio, camera, video, blah blah blah, the way a hack would.
Of course, if you are the kind of person that HAS to apply the leaked OTA right now because ... well, its out RIGHT NOW, then go for it ... logic has no place in your world

Because we werent expecting Froyo till Xmas and this still could just be a rumor.
Also people like to experiment with their phones. Also like normal OTAs, the first few days only like 1,000 people will get it. This means it will take over a week to get it to everyone once they start larger groups.

No official date has been released to the public. Any reply concerning this stating otherwise is unreliable and should be considered theoretical. To justify this please understand that there have already been several rumored release dates that have already come and gone. Most recent of those were "By the end of April."
If you're so tired of 1.6 you could always consider rooting your device and installing an Eclair rom. Cyanogen is currently testing his CM-5.0.7 release on MyTouch/G1 devices. For being experimental, I must say that it seems pretty solid.
Well I work for myself and have no ties with google t-mobile and htc (other than I use thier products) and I can say for sure that it will be released on May 1st 1956 pick up sticks. No lies this will be the release day.
There you go tell your friends just don't go telling anyone where you got the info.
Never. If you want to update your phone you have to do it yourself. So set aside like 8 hours of your life come here and read up on the Devlopment fourm on how to do it. It's definitely worth investing the time into rooting your phone.
I really wish people would quit asking this. Unless somebody finds a MAJOR Security hole in the original stock firmware this phone will never get an OTA update.

TMobile disagrees with you. They have 2.1 OTA updates planned this spring for all phones.
so what..even if t-mobile does OTA this device it's still be a Stock rom. It's still not going to be able to do what it can really do by him actually taking time out of his life to put 2.1 on there today. So why have him wait for T-Mobile to get around to pushing out a lesser lower quality OTA versus him just putting the latest Custom Rom on it like Cyanogen's right now?
Morrolan how about you do a bit of research before you speak. T-mobile said the by the end of April, not Spring.

Whenever they release an official ROM, most 2.1 ROMs will be rebuilt. They'll actually have a fully functional ROM that was actually MEANT to run with the Dream/Magic.

Funny how it's May and the updates are not out to the phones. The latest press release said "spring," not "April." You might want to follow your own advice.
Just out of curosity to see if anyone got the test build via OTA, and did not manually update it
Yes, you should have been paying attention the last few days. This was a test release sent to a few tech bloggs for review.

Not a single person on the entirety of XDA has received the OTA.
It was press only for people who attended Google I/O.
According to what I have heard, the press people were an accident, that the test build was only supposed to goto some testers.
It seems that some of the press people IMEIs were dumped into the IMEI list by accident and that is why they received the update via OTA.
Google really has not been very vocal about this and that is what is causing the confusion.
It would have been better if they said, N1 community FroYo is due out in x weeks (we hope).
Dan
Who cares how it was released. We got a little Froyo.
Everyone complains about how it doesn't work as expected, needs to chill, considering this was a release candidate.
Personally I installed 2.2 before most, and I'm enjoying the hell out of it. I don't know why everyone is flipping out, it works perfect to me. I had it freeze up one time, which was when I first booted, and all I had to do was wait a few minutes for it to unfreeze. It runs great for now.
Who gives a crap where it came from and who got it.
I have a question i have a non rooted n1 i manually installed froyo on it will i be able to do the over the air update when the real thing actually comes out?

I'm with ya on this one man.
The whole Mytouch line getting Froyo Pretty soon T-mobile legit news.
I wandering how soon is soon lol they keep saying soon.
Check out the link even has a pamphlet.

Bunch of **** teases thats all they are
"A modified version of the Faves Gallery"......oh joy, now everyone can 'enjoy' that stellar feature!
well, I have heard that it would have Froyo before launch date, that didn't happen. I heard it would be this week (with one day left is possible but not probable). I just saw in another post it would be next week (don't hold your breath). Some reports say by the end of the year. I am inclined to believe it will happen but we will not know when until we get it all of a sudden. Just my thoughts.

This is likely what the big June 19th event was all about.
They say that is a Father's Day special on tmonews.com. Free phone with a family plan or something. I hope its really a froyo update. Either way if we get root soon... we can update now. well, when its ported. and with sense ui, that will be no easy task. Of course, they could port the desire rom.
I wonder how they could roll out FroYo for us next week when the Nexus doesn't even have it's OTA yet?
Unless Google is purposely waiting to do the OTA on the Nexus at the same time as the MyTouch line? Trying to even the playing field a bit?

Google has to mod the 2.2 AOSP code just like everyone else does for their devices. All the OHA members are privy to the latest code equally.
The reason the nexus got an update so far ahead last time appears to be that other other companies didn't appear to care about updating the phones. Now that they have google pushing updates so quickly to their own phone, they are making other phones look lame by having to wait so long for updates.

Interesting theory. I guess there could be several theories behind it as well. I'll play devil's advocate here and say that maybe now, Google has decided not to update the Nexus as quickly either to allow the other devices to catch up, or because they simply don't care anymore (since they aren't selling it directly anymore).
Thoughts?
why would t-mobile open at 8am for an android update?.........
All I have to say is, froyo is going to rock on this slide.
as long as the bloatware they put in the slide will be gone... hate all the crap... >.< want root so i can get rid of the stupid programs that are useless!
Yeah apps2sd and tether will be nice for an unrooted phone. I think it is a little odd that the tmo stuff cannot be removed seeing as this phone is supposed to be "100% you" ...

Hahahha! Exactly what I was thinking... yeah, It should have been removable. I got about 20MB by using factory data reset. All it did was erase some wallpapers and other minor, useless crap. I cant wait until the devs root this baby. Ive got like 20mb left on internal storage. sucks...
I would bet we dont see froyo unitl late summer or fall. HTC has to update sense ui for froyo, plus then the wait on tmobile. I would guess that the MT3G will get a froyo ota before we do.
Oh God... I just had a SCARY thought! What if tmobile doesnt include A2SD on their version of 2.2?! They sure did screw us on the live wallpapers for 2.1 on the MTS. Maybe that was just because of the sense ui. I mean it does animate the weather as a live wallpaper, sort of...
OTA 1.47.651.1 has been pulled as it is bricking some phones. Sprint has a internal notice floating around but I just figured that I should post this incase anyone was wondering.
Thank you for posting this. I was following the forums all day to see how the OTA was affecting rooted and non-rooted. It's ironic (and very unfortunate) that most stock users are getting bricked. Sprint not off to a good start with the EVO.
LOL much like the Hero.
I updated after monitoring, having only previously ran unrEVOked for wifi tether. Lucky for me, all is well.
Sprint is honestly not just off to a bad start with this phone, they're pretty much off to an awful start with it. Can't keep stock, can't replenish stock, bricked stock phones after OTA updates.
Not good problems to have.
I would bet it was a very small percentage that was having issues. From what I saw it was the fantom second update that was causing the problems. Anyway, some of the folks who know what to do with it, have it to take apart and use for the good of the rest of us.
Yippi!
-Roger
most non rooted getting bricked. prove it
I'm pretty glad I got mine. Helped my 4g strength somehow. I was dropping and switching back and forth (3g to 4g) and now I have full bars and drops to two bars every now and then. Also, phone works just as perfectly as before. I haven't rooted and won't until all of the kinks are worked out.

Not keeping stock is not really a bad thing for Sprint. They're just selling a ton of Evo's. And I don't think it's Sprint's fault for not getting new devices in (more likely HTC or the manufacturers) and the OTA is from HTC. Sprint would be fine if HTC could get their act together, although most of the problems are few and far between.
Is the update file available somewhere? It's still legit. I had the option to update today at work but signal was bad so I waited until I got home. By then the update got pulled and I no longer had the update option. I'd like to get the new update on my phone since I heard it improves battery life considerably.
My money is that the phone bricking was a result of non-patient users who didn't let the update finish and/or those who blindly hit "accept" without doing the slightest amount of reading (like checking the version number vs. what they already have on the phone).... ie. Those who ran the update twice.
No root, no problems. I updated when it first came out. Haven't noticed anything different.

Not being able to keep your product in stock because the demand is so high I would say is a pretty good problem to have.
It would be great if they posted a link for a download. Palm would always put their updates on they website for download. Can any body get it from their build who downloaded it?

Considering iPhone 4s are sold out for the next few weeks (lines outside local AT&T / Apple stores for the second round of preorders this morning)...
And I imagine the same will be true for Verizon when it drops the Droid X...
All the "hot" phones are pretty much currently sold out.
I'm just sayin' I could use a heaping helping of froyo

hopefully froyo drops soon with the gps fix. just picked up my vibrant yesterday and the gps is a little wonky, but it has been very accurate at times too. usually only locks onto 1 sat, with about 11 in view. don't really use it enough to worry about the fix, and i'm too busy playing with the rest of the phone.

I second that - 2.2 may restore everything back as before Lag Fix. Right now, I am happy at 3Mbps download speed, and Wireless Mobile AP feature with around 2Mbps download speed. Also, i don't count on expecting the upgrade from Tmobile, unless u got an HTC phone like Nexus One (my son got one, and constantly got OTA updates). Samsung and Tmobile are famous for false promise and tons of BS answers from CSR. Don't call and waste your time. In the mean time, do learn and bring your Vibrant up to speed so you can enjoy it.

It's only 18 hours into the month (CST), give it some time people. Even if it were released today, right now, this exact second, it would still take some time to get rolled out OTA - you can't push a large update like that to ALL your subs at the same time. That's a great way to crash your network.
