Hi, I am having problems syncing the Galaxy S to Samsungs Kies software, which in turn allows you to sync with Outlook. Spoken to Samsung support but no result and they blame a faulty handset. Orange say not and suggested I try XDA. Is there any other software out there that can allow the phone to sync with Outlook? Thanks for any help.

Are you using Launcher Pro by any chance?
Correct me if I'm wrong, you plan to sync it via USB with your desktop Outlook and not via WIFI or Internet?
Any reason?
Moved to General forum. The development forum is only for development threads. (Threads with actual development happening.)
Questions should always be in the General forums (or Q&A if your device has a Q&A forum.)
I am having the same problem. You can connect through USB cabble and Wi-Fi? Where can I find a tutorial? Thanks

Same problem. Also administrator privilege error message
I am having the same problem with the Samsung Galaxy S and synching to Outlook. I'm using Kies with a cable. Orange is my service provider but have tried on Wifi as well and have the same error.
I get a message saying that I need Administrator Privilege permissions. I am logged in as the admin on my computer so not sure on this.
if you are running Vista or 7, you need to do a right click and select "Run As Administrator" option
Thanks Fido. Right click within Kies? Nothing happens. I'm running Windows 7. Have checked the settings and I do have administrator rights...

No right click the icon for Kies and then select Properties. Look for Run as Admin towards the bottom. Tick the box and save/okay the change.
Launch Kies which should now be fine.
That makes sense. Have done that however and still the same error. Have simply Run as Administrator in the first right click menu. Tried the same in Properties/Compatibility for both myself and all users. Does feel like we are nearly there though with those menu options. Its just not working
Not sure why it is not working for you. Kies is indeed not working well and slowly. It should be able to work. I got it working (don't ask me how) between my Galaxy S and Outlook on my Win 7 64bits.
However, the sync formats are terrible. It doesn't sync my contacts photos from my computer to the phone. Next I see that some fields are lost, and some contacts with more than one number or email are replicated. Replication only showing that 2nd number/email.
Thus, it tries to sync. But it does not sync. (Sync meaning twice the same) This is appearantly a Samsung Kies programmers fault by not relating the Outlook data fields correctly to the phone's.
I am now looking if there are other 3rd party sync programs which do a better sync. Also see no reason why Kies syncing should be so slow. I read somewhere that Kies was originaly not designed for Android phones. So hopefully Samsung will create another sync program???? But I can't wait too long for that.
Also no call recording found yet, I should have stayed with my Windows Mobile... but the Android sounded so promissing, open source and all....
Don't get me wrong, I love the phone.... with its imperfections. Lets see if there are any apps, patches, or mods out there which make it perfect.

Today my ActiveSync connection stopped working.
It tries to connect for a while then it comes up with "ActiveSync cannot connect to the Windows Mobile powered device. ..."
WM5torage works, so does pinging the Wizard.
Things I tried:
-Using the repair option from Active Sync setup
-Reverting the Wizard to a 3 day old backup made with SPB
Nothing worked :-(
What else (other than a hard reset) could I try?
See below for solution. And don't touch the notification queue if you don't know what you're doing
check if you firewall is blocking the activesync connection
if this is not the case ... good luck
try reinstalling activesync..
or get the latest one..
Install this cab application and select serial instead of RNDIS, just tap at YES button, and activesync will work perfect
Activesync gone mad
I am having the same problem with activesync not actually syncing my contacts and calender despite making all the noises I usually associate with a successful sync. My contacts are not updated and my calender has none of the appointments from outlook uploaded to it.
I have done a soft reset. a hard reset, gone back to activesync 4.2 and nothing works. I have also tried the usb switch that is mentioned elsewhere and no joy. I have other ppc's running PPC2003 and these are fine and update almost immediately, its only my xda mini s that is being a sod. I never had a problem before activesync 4 and several other machines before the mini s. I should also mention that my outlook files are fine and work on all other machines.
It is bad business that the world is becoming dependant on such bad software as this. It is not progress to make things worse and Mr Gates should be held to task for the problems caused from forcing us onto unreliable software in the name of progress. I was happy enough on activesync 3.8 and WM2003 and never had problems.
Please, Please someone give me an answer before hammer and xda meet in heated discussion.
I have the same problem with my MDA and both my PC and Laptop. I have been trying to resolve this problem for months. It is unbelievable that it is so hard to resolve this issue. I have been posting on this forum and on others and still am looking for a resolution. Maybe someday, someone will resolve this issue. Thanks for your postings and help in trying to resolve this issue. Frustrated beyond belief.
Sorry, this did not work either: Install this cab application and select serial instead of RNDIS, just tap at YES button, and activesync will work perfect
Update to previous
Just an update. I have tried this on another machine using the pst file from my machine and it syncs fine. Clearly, there is some problem on my machine with my software.
I have also removed outlook and reinstalled it. Also removed all profiles on main machine. At present, my calendar will sync but my contacts will not. Outlook tests say there is nothing wrong. Short of a complete software install I can not see another way to cure this other than the big hammer.
Go figure.
p.s.
If I had a hammer and Mr Gates was in front of me I would not be held responsible for my actions.
I found a corporate firewall that was preventing sync, I have to shut down the service and then it worked. Strangly, it would sync over bluetooth without stopping the service. A bit OT, but I can't seem to browse while synced. It asks for proxy info which I type in but it says bad user name/password. I KNOW I'm putting in the right proxy info (it defaulted it from my PC which browses fine) and correct user name/pw/domain. Any ideas?
FIXED
No firewall, no ActiveSync, no connection problems at all.
Fixed it by reverting my database to a backup.
When i had the well known alarm clock troubles i accidentially (= out of ignorance) deleted the whole notification queue.
Word of advice: Don't do that, it'll screw everything up

Still looking for some help on this.
check this solution:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=271174&highlight=activesync
Is this related to the inability to pass-through browse while on activesync? I am able to sync fine, but when I try to browse I get an error saying bad proxy info (which I've check 1000 times). Or sometimes when I'm messing around with the settings I get a "lost connection" message rather than the invalid login/password. So frustrating! Will switching to the serial type of connection help me?
ActiveSync must be one of the most frustrating applications out there. I have tried all recommended fixes and still cannot get ActiveSync to recognize my MDA. The last time I did a sync was 9/06. Too much BS using this application. I have searched all over the web and cannot find any application that will allow me to update my PIM file without ActiveSync. So, I guess I will finally give up on this. Thanks to all of you who have tried to help me. Thank You!!
If you use it as a backup only, as I do, you may want to prevent it from synchronizing, cause it does it often even if you unchecked everything, it's long and it slows down your device meanwhile. Not a big deal, but we're all here so that our life becomes easier right ?
So, using PIM Backup, you can automaticaly backup your whole PIM + files\folder to the storage card, everyday at the time you want, and it will even wake up the pda to backup and suspend it right after, so that you can schedule it by night. It takes around a minute to backup.
Now you can just leave Active Sync in guest mode.... and then you tell me:
Yeah but it will ask me to pair everytime I connect my device !!
That's where my script is showing up: it will stay in background and will closes Active Sync windows as soon as they'll show up.
Just unzip & run once
To uninstall, just delete ActiveSyncBlaster in your Windows directory.
FINAL UPDATE (22.10.07) fyahstar just gave us the reg key I was looking for.... Add a DWORD "GuestOnly" = 1 in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services for a perfect result (no window opening at all). Or you can rename attachment to .reg and launch it.
Update (21 oct. 07) Everything's fixed
I merged both scripts into one, which will handle both cases (Outlook installed or not).
It will not stay open in background anymore: Now it will only be launched when the device is connected.
It now comes with an installer, just run it and you're done !
Oh, & it's a bit faster too.
Update (07 oct.07) I made a version for those who don't have Outlook installed (extra window to close)
Huh.
Very cool idea. I do the same thing as I use OTA sync but I don't sync with my computer, so I get that dumb "guest" thing all time. I found AS continuous sync interferes with my DUN, overloading the device CPU.
I'll have to try this out tonight, but sounds great, so thanks!
it's easier than this - make a normal AS connection, and in a configurator, uncheck all options... and that's it

believe it or not, it's not that easy.
even with nothing checked, the AS will still continue every couple of minutes to sync with the device, even if it's technically not synching information.

It still synchronises: ie starting to exchange with the device, open files for comparison, etc.
The worst is, it will do it even if outlook is not installed.
I'll also check the registry when I get time to see if nothing can be done by that side.
does it still sync constantly in guest mode? I was reading a kind of related (very old) article...
GuestOnly is the real magic in our personal Sync Stations; it’s responsible for allowing all new devices (i.e., those that don’t already have a partnership with the PC) to connect as guests without being prompted to establish a partnership. (Note that all devices that have an existing partnership with the PC will still connect and synchronize as they did before.)

mmm, I'm not certain to understand correctly... yep those are for desktop side (PC). You just have to put one of them (it depends if outlook is installed or not) in your startup folder so that it'll be launched along with act.sync when the computer starts. Then, when you connect your device, if you choosed NOT to pair it with that computer (so that no sync.will ever be launched), annoying windows are showing, and my script will close them instantly. I did it using auto-hotkey. Didn't have enough time to fix it right now, but I swear it will be done till wednesday ^_^'
I'll also investigate in another (proper) method to achieve the same thing via reg-editing and I'll let you know if something can (has) be done that way.

Here is the registry key to enable GuestOnly mode for activesync. Rename file extension from .txt to .reg. Hope this helps.

sorry about that anyway thanks for that activesync when you want link, I remember reading that ages ago.
I did look for it where I thought I saw it last...on another site! No wonder I couldn't find it.
Thanks for the reg key fix. I use Exchange OTA, so I don't need to sync with the PC. I ran this registry key on my PC and I no longer get the popup to pair with my phone each time I plug it in. It still allows me to transfer files and access the phone via activesync, but with no annoying popup.

I was thinking the same thing as i refuse to register my device just to download sync software, it was not like this when i downloaded HTC_Sync_2.0.38 a few weeks ago, and i can download HTC_Sync_2.0.40 without registering a serial easily and use it with no issues, matter a fact i was using HTC_Sync_2.0.40 to sync my outlook and calender even before HTC_Sync_2.0.38 was released so why make us register the device?

Ok, after using this new version i must say that its a step backwards. I like the new GUI and all the eye candy and the ability to install .APK files but it lacks the basic functionality that the HTC_Sync_2.0.38 had.
For instance the old version told you at a glance the number of contacts in outlook and events on the outlook calender, where it is at during the contact syncing and calender syncing. It also gave you more advanced options on syncing.
On this new version Outlook must be set as you default mail client for it to connect with it which is completely bogus. On first connect the device synced on it own using the latest modified data which created duplicated in outlook and my phone, deleted the duplicates from my phone and tried to sync again and it completely wiped the data from outlook, i used the nandroid to restore the contacts to the phone and tried to sync again to get everything back where it was.
A bit angry with the music syncing. The files sync to /Music/ then the full file directory. so if you music is stored in c/:users/username/my documents/music you media wll be synced in the same structure /Music/c/users/username/my documents/music which is more complex than it needs to be. A simple music folder with music/Artist/album is sufficient. Then it took 1 hour to sync 3.8GB of music, that same 3.8 GB takes less than 15 if i remove the card from the device and put in in the card reader.
Long story shorty, im reverting back to HTC_Sync_2.0.40. Sometimes less is more.
Funny that now the new sync is no longer availble on HTC site and the link was changed back to HTC_Sync_2.0.38

You probably want to get on the ball with finding this software as it really has been pulled from the site. Some people have upped the new version for download, so do a search, grab it while its hot and sit on it if you want to sideload with the software (without rooting).

I downloaded this one, the one from HTC's site (before it was removed) and even tried the old version (.38) and NONE of them recognize my phone when I plug it in and tell the phone to use HTC Sync. The phone tries to find it running on my PC but can't. Any ideas? I'm running Win7 64.
Ok, I am not sure how many are familiar with Microsoft SyncToy, but I am basically looking for something for Android. So is there an app that will sync any two folders that I select? Preferably I'd like some automation, such as anytime the phone is in the Bluetooth or WiFi range, the folders are synced automatically.
I have heard a lot about Kies. Will it serve this purpose, even if only by using a USB cable? If not, then what is the purpose of installing Kies? Thar's a huge application at almost 140MBs. Compare to just a few MBs (or maybe even under 1MB) for SyncToy.
Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks, but I meant a direct sync, not through a website. One thing I don't like about the Android is that it forces the users to use internet servers more than any other platform. They don't have a decent outlook sync either. I hope that this changes soon otherwise windows will always be on top. Most of the people in our generation don't care much about having all our stuff online, but I know that a major incident (whether major data loss or data compromise) will change that very quickly.
Ok, so I guess there is no simple, direct sync solution between any two folders between the phone and the computer. That sucks. I hope Kies does at least something like that.
List of Sync products here
Ran across this site while doing MY research on this sync issue.
Standard Web address, syncdroid followed by .NET (Forum won't let me post the link until I've been vetted or some such nonsense ... LOL!) I get it, but it's STILL annoying!
They have a chart of the available Android sync products, cost, etc. Most have a free trial, but a lot are dumb in that you can only sync 5 items (like THAT'S going to help you get a feel for the software!) LOL!
If you're using an Enterprise Server, the top one seems to be Touchdown. For just straight USB to device, CompanionLink (on the PC) and DejaOffice (Android end, they're a pair) is also popular, as is gSyncit.
I'm pondering getting a Domain name and setting up a Google Premiere account so I can get onto a secure server. Debating that or straight USB sync. There's a couple with Bluetooth, but that tech tends to be shaky at best! Don't know if it's out either. RSN and all that.
Hope this helps!

Samsung Kies was working for me until I upgraded to Windows 7, 64-bit, which Kies is not compatible with yet.
I'm using Kies 1.5 on Windows 7 64 bit. It works fine but it only synchronizes contacts and the calendar with outlook... You can also export some items to your PC.
As it says just in-case you haven't seen it yet, but be warned it is based on Nero 10 with a bit of Dell stuff thrown in, anyways heres the direct download link

/edit and it's trying to spam me with toolbars, another Nero habit.
Tested it last night.. Seems like an unfinished version, it asks me to purchase the full version to be able to sync, not just import :s
And furthermore, dell update screen specifies that this should also have outlook sync capabilities.. I don't understand how that will be possible though.

Agree with the comments above. I also found that after downloading and installing it, it then told me that there were updates available! And of course it requires a reboot each time (why on earth should the installation of a PDA sync program require an operating system reboot?!)
The lack of Outlook synchronisation is a disaster for me. I don't do GMail, and all my contacts/diary/to dos/notes are in Outlook. Windows Mobile Device Centre may have had its problems, but at least it let me synchronise my WinMo phones with Outlook.
Surely Dell can't remove this functionality with the roll-out of 2.2?

Why in the world would Dell go to a sync program with 64 bit issues when by default, ALL Dell laptops come with 64 bit Win7 installed????
it is not an office 2010 problem. it is a activesync problem. activesync has no 64 bit support. running office 2010 32 bit on 64 bit windows works fine. the activesync thus also the dell sync program work fine as they rely on activesync.
btw if you look in the market and search for dell you will find the dell (nero) backup program. while you wait for the update to come next week , one can make a backup allready

Works for me with Windows 7 64 bit. First I deleted ADB interface in device manager and restarted. That may not be necessary. After the ADB interface has been reinstalled by Windows I started the new mobile sync manager and it recognized the Streak quickly under devices. After removing the USB connection it may take 1 or 2 tries reseating the USB plug in the computer before the Streak is being recognized again. A little fickle, but it works.

Backup/Restore AND synchronize with Outlook both work. A disclaimer here, I use 64 bit Windows 7 Ultimate, but still use 32-bit Office 2007, and Outlook is still version 2003.
The first time I tried synchronize the Dell Mobile software crashed. However, after upgrading it works fine now. Remember, to sync you have to have "USB connected" set to "off".
By the way, reconnecting to Dell Mobile Sync always seems to take a few tries of plugging in and re-plugging the USB cable.

The Dell Mobile Sync will only work if you have the "Dell Sync" app on your Streak. It did come with Steve's 2.2 version 1.2 (what I am using now) and, presumably, will be included in the official Froyo. To sync 1.6 or 2.1 you can use the original Dell software.
Other Outlook Sync Methods
For those who cannot sync because they use Outlook 2010 64 bit or are having other problems, there are other solutions to sync Outlook with the Streak. syncdroid.net lists most of them in a chart. Cross reference the software with what you want to sync (calendar, contacts, notes, tasks), how you want to sync (wireless, wi-fi, usb), and your Outlook version to get your solutions. Many of them are free.
Slightly off topic but is there anyway of stopping the Dell Sync app from appearing on my phone when I connect it to my PC as I now just sync with google contract and google calendar and have no need for Dell Sync?
What exactly is included with the new sync software?
According to this site http://www.syncdroid.net/dell-mobile-sync, the new (Nero) version of Dell Mobile Sync will only synchronise Contacts from Outlook, and will not synchronise Calendar, Tasks or Notes. It also says that Dell are removing their Tasks and Notes applications from the 2.2 build.
Can anybody who has upgraded to 2.2 please confirm that this is the case?
