is it just me or does the camera on the droid X seem kinda... cheap? yeah its 8mp with 720p video, but the pictures just lack a lot of detail (and are often a tinsy bit blurry)
It just seems that my old N1 was waaaayyyyyyy ahead in the camera department, and it was a bit older than the DX. I'm just wondering if anybody else feels that the camera is lacking for a high end device like this...
Prior to the droid X, I had a samsung vibrant and a nexus one. The nexus one camera was definitely better, and the vibrant was miiiiiiles ahead. The DX cameras doesn't focus very well...
In my experience I have taken amazing photos and some that looked like complete crap. Oddly enough using vignette I seem to get consistantly better photos than I would using the stock camera app. It might be worth checking out.

Any camera that has the optics the size of a mustard seed isn't going to be that great unless the lighting is perfect and there is no motion. I can't wait to see cell phones with 20 Megapixels of pure grainy crap. Unless the lens gets bigger, don't expect much.
Yep....it's all about the lens. If you want better pictures, download Vignette...it'll let you make the pictures look good even if they aren't great to start out with.

I always though htc's cameras were better. Maybe a bit saturated, but no where near as grainy. To each their own right
Basically dont take pics inside with the DX, and even if they do look grainy, they will look 10x better when reviewing on a comp.
It's not all about the lens...it's all about the sensor, and the sensor on the DX is garbage. The only way to help overcome a crappy sensor is to have very good lighting conditions, and even that is only a modest bump.
The pictures sucks... when you look at them ON THE PHONE.
They look 10x better when printed or on the computer... as Bad4U stated earlier.

The Incredibles camera isn't bad at all. What are you basing that on?
Isn't the poor compression methods a part of the issue leading to crappy quality pics?

I have a fascinate and X in my family.
IMO the fascinate camera takes pictures that are miles ahead of the X.
The X takes horrible indoor pictures, they are blurry and always out of focus. The Fascinate actually takes really good indoor pictures for a cell phone. I would say it takes as good or better indoors pics than some point and shoot cameras.
Outdoors I think there is less of a difference in picture quality between the two, but the colors on the fascinate seem like they are better. Maybe that is just because they are viewed on the Fascinate's screen, which has better colors IMO. I have not compared the two on the computer.
I just want to point out however that I recently discovered that the macro shots with this thing are quite good.
You can really tell, as these were all taken with my DX and the macro shots look actually decent, here
Most times good pictures
I've had a number of phones with cameras to include Droid, Dinc, SF and an endless array of WM. The Droid X setup with steady shot and then waiting for the green bars produces some of the best pics I've had. The Sammy SF was okay but seemed over saturated with color.
The real plus for me is the dedicated hardware button. When I travel I often ask other picture takers to take a picture of my group with me in it. Trying to explain touching the screen vs pushing the button is a little strange for most.
Just my 2 cents.
Also, I use Photoshop Express. It does a nice job for editing AND allows batch upload to Facebook. Important when you maintain a travel log.
freezing up!
ever since i got froyo my camera/camcorder has been crapping out on my on several occassions. there are times i take pictures and nothing shows up, or the camera will just close altogether. the only way to fix it is by doing a hard reset/battery pull. any ideas/fixes?
Droid x rooted, 2.2, version 2.3.15.mb810, no themes.
Vignette has helped with indoor pictures, or pictures in poor lighting. Not sure how or why, though? I really think it improves indoor/dark pictures quite a bit, imo. Overall, after using vignette, I think the camera is good enough for most of my use. I think pics in good lighting look very good on my x, with or without vignette.
So i just got my evo comibg from the Iphone and i still had the Iphone so i tested the cameras and on the iphone the colors seem much better. For example i take a picture of a orange wall on both and the iphone is mucb brighter and looks tbe color of the wall but the evo color is terrible. Just wondering if there is anything to fix it

lol thats funny. I have seen some pretty good pictures taken from Evo's though. There is a great app on the market called vignette, my pictures come out much better with that and it can do a ton of effects.
Thanks james and idk why everyone is bashing the iphone im not sayings the iphone is amazing i was just saying the picture lighting was better

most likely the screen difference. afaik, the camera is the same on both, except evo has higher mp. Try to put both images on a computer, and view them side by side. They should similar, if not identical.
Ya thought it might just be the screen thanks

thats the gist of it. the iphone4 has a superior camera, the camera is equal when it comes to daylight shots or in a situation where lighting is very good, but as soon as your in a low light situation the iphone4's camera is a billion times better.
In reality the Evo has a better camera, the difference is storage. For the Evo to be able to record HD on to a class 2 memory card they had to compress the hell out of it, thats why it looks so bad. If they would have ponied up the money to ship class 6 cards with the phones then it would be just as good if not better than the iPhones.

Thread on it is here:

The evo and iphone4's cameras are both made by the same company, the only difference is the evo's is 8 megapixel while the iphones is only 5.
I would also say the software has something to do with it. I played with a Droid X at a Verizon store a while back, and the camera seemed to be very reactive to you pressing the shutter button. I think the Evo takes GREAT pics, but it takes a while to focus and if you try to take a pic of something that is in movement, you usually get a heavy blur effect.
The the OP, I also think the screen is why the pics look different. Try taking the same pics and sending them both to an email address where you view both of them on the same screen. That way, you can make a better comparison of the quality of the actual pics themselves.
I find that even with brightness turned to -3 and shooting from 6 feet away, the flash will over-expose the subject that I am trying to shoot.

I find that the flash pretty much useless on my EVO, unless my intent is annoy someone with a bright flash of light....i wish that the flash was adjustable. I am sure it is possible, just try the FLASHLIGHT app, where the brightness can be changed...
iPhone loves saturation. Turn saturation up on your phone in ideal lighting and you will have almost identical pictures.
The iPhone 4 has infinitely better low light performance. I know from experience. If you have access to both, shoot a photo without flash in a low light area - you'll see that the iPhone 4 is better.
I too have struggled with the EVO camera and as someone who desperately wants a decent quality smart phone camera so I don't have to carry a dig cam around, was frustrated. Although, saturation, compression , etc. are significant issues...I've had good results with adjusting white balance and ISO. I know, it's a pain to constantly adjust but the EVO's auto settings for the camera do a terrible job. Change white balance to the corresponding environment and pics come out better (incandescent for reg light bulbs, fluorescent for, well fluorescent, you get the picture) and I usually have ISO at 100. I also usually have contrast, saturation, and sharpness at +1.
The flash is a whole other issue...only use in the dark at 10 feet away.
Just my two cents.
EVO's camera sucks. IMO, it's software related. I just wish for once, these companies would spend more time with the cameras instead of just throwing them in as matter of facts.

the camera is the manufacturer just higher megapixels. the difference is software
After bringing up the camera issues and being attacked by Faithful EVO Thumpers, I decided to do something about it and find some easy home made fixes so that people could get HD IN DEPTH photos with out switching to a phone with a much better camera (Samsung-Clears throat)
I found that the photos are naturally over exposed and over saturated. If you have bought a EVO and taken a picture you have probably scratched your head as many times as i did trying to figure out why the camera on your old phone was WAY better.
MAIN Problem - The Evo has 2 LED flashes. This is far more that the phone ever needed for photos.
I used the stock MIUI camera app for most of these pictures. My second go to app would be Camera 360 Ultimate. Which has stunning effects.
The photos i am posting were raw images. I adjusted the saturation and contrast to suit my taste. No effects were used. In some cases i made the photo black and white
I have had the best photos with the lates MIUI ROM. Only because the camera controls allow you to change a lot of dynamic properties that will provide you with all sorts of great photos.
This is a list of the settings that work best for me.
1. FOCUS MODE- TOUCH-- Works best for DEPTH OF FEILD
2. COLOR EFFECT- NONE- MONO FOR BACK AND WHITE
3. ISO- AUTO---- YOU WILL SEE WHY IN A SEC
4. METERING- CENTER WEIGHTED
5. ANTI BANDING - OFF -
6. STABLE SHOT- 1 SEC-
7. 8 MP
8.SUPER FINE QUALITY
9. BRIGHTNESS- -1.0 TO -05
10. Contrast and Saturation at 2- For those with a non miui rom. REDUCE THOSE UNTIL ALMOST ALL COLOR IS GONE. adjust back up to your liking
11. Sharpness is at max
12. White balance should always be INCANDESCENT if indoors unless you are going for a desired effect.
13. Flash is auto or ON
These settings are pretty much universal regardless of what camera app you use.
Camera 360 allows you to reduce the compression.
***** HERE IS THE TRICK*****
Go grab some REAL D 3d glasses. They are free and most people have them laying around the house from the last 3d film they went to.
Cut a small circle from the lense of the glasses---BIG ENOUGH TO COVER THE LED LIGHTS.
Mount it over the flashes with your own prefered method. Do not block the flash--Only cover it with the shaded Plastic lense.
THATS IT. Hope this will inspire some people to take creative photos and enjoy having a phone that also takes good photos.
I was tired of watching random people get jumped by Forum trolls who would rather defend the device instead of make it better.
THE PURPOSE IS TO CONTROL OR CONVERT THE LIGHT OF THE FLASH. I also had great photos by completely covering one LED with
I took these photos in a very dim room that has an old light. Conditions do not matter. The more natural light you have the better but be creative and let me know if you find something better to cover the flash with.
Download the zip for entire photoshoot and starting ideas

These are raw photos. The only edit i did was black and white
I found that adjusting the saturation all the way down makes awsome black and white. add contrast to darken the backround. I took these with horrible lighting indoors.
Im sure these pics will turn out great once i get em into PHOTOSHOP. Put the app on your phone and and you almost dont even need a 700$ camera----excluding the lenses-
More pics
These are the things that were next to me. Im sure with some time i will develope new ways to capture the world.

Works very well. I cut out a small piece of the 3d glasses, and put it over the flash, behind the phones' back cover, so the cover holds the plastic in place. Thanks for the tip, it took me like 3 minutes, and I can see the improvement in the flash.

Cute trick, polarize the flash instead of the lens. I've done tricky stuff with gels with my nikon, never considered the evo to have a serious enough cam to bother, but I have a ton of these glasses lying around that I might have to try this with.

I don't think camera on the tablet is necessary so I didn't regard the resolution of the camera when buying. When I go back an take some photos, I think that it is 1.3MP... and now you tell me that it is 5MP, then I think that is software problem, cause my i9000 also takes these kind of photos with poorly configured camera App...
Here are a couple I have taken just now in decent lighting. Ill post some from outside tomorrow.

I'm not sure what all the fuss is about? I've taken several pictures as well and I have no complaints. As a matter of fact, I was shocked by the quality that I was getting from the camera while taking photos and video.
Not even the iPad 2 takes great photos. Use your phone or don't use the tablet. Personally, I'm so pleased with the Acer. It's not the best but I think I got my money's worth.

The pictures are poor. You're gonna have some good, some bad, but overall the camera is poor. Especially when zooming at all.
The camera app itself is snappy and it'll focus fast, but this ultra pixel with 4mp just isn't gonna get it. There is 2 year old technology cranking out better, more consistent pictures.

Yeah, um, those Flickr photos look more than acceptable for me. I don't need the best camera if I'm getting the best screen, audio quality, and experience that the M8 will surely offer as the M7 did. The camera is literally secondary (or, well, further than that) than all of those areas and, even then, it's not really bad at all.

In all seriousness, when it comes down to cutting costs on a smartphone design, camera would be the first thing on my list too. Would you rather it be made of cheap plastic, not have front facing speakers or have a smaller battery?
I'd take superior hardware/build over a great camera any day. I know we want it all, but it seems like we just can't have it all. At least not til the M9.

IMAG0065 that night time pic...looks really really really bad. but for the most part its not bad. Matter of fact all the night time ones are really bad towards the end .
In complete and utter seriousness guys (not being a fanboy either) I was MORE than pleased with the camera on the M7. That was my primary concern that I debated over for months before getting the M7 - giving up my iPhone 5 which took awesome pics was a difficult choice. Hands down, I'm more than excited to get back to Android (had to go back to my iPhone 5 due to selling my M7). The true wide angle 16:9 is so awesome and the pics were great. Overall, I felt like I was able to regularly capture more accurate color representations with the M7. Low light was pretty great too.
I will say, there were a few times where I was left wishing I could crop to a larger size and retain image quality. However, for me personally, it wasn't a big enough issue for me to ditch the phone, as I don't need to do that often enough. If you're someone who is perpetually cropping, this probably isn't going to work for you.
Also, I used to have an album of pics I took on my phone to show people when they'd play with it. I received soooo many compliments on the pics I took and more people saying "This phone has such an amazing camera" never knowing it was only 1/2 the MP's as their phones.
I understand and agree with the major drawbacks of it, however, as an overall quick shooter to the ability to take your time and change settings to get an optimal pic, it blew me away quite a few times. That's more than I could ever say about my iPhone.
Addition: there was a thread I saw with M7 vs. M8 photos and the colors looked quite a bit better and more crisp on the M8. I'm excited to see what I can do with it.
although the MP is disappointing, the strengths of the phone outweigh a blunder such as that I think. It's not like the camera is crap, it's just average for current times. We just had higher expectations as we should have especially compared to last year's. I would say the camera is "adequate"
