I have heard a little rumour that the Orange 2.1 QMR is being released right about... NOW.
Expect the update soon people!
Part 1 is out OTA now. Part 2... not so much.
Got part 1 of the OTA earlier this evening, I just set my clock forward to 26/01/11 and started a mobile network connecton and within 15 seconds it prompted me for the update.
It installed fine and now I am on Rom 2.73.61.92 from 2.73.61.66 and I have the check for updates option which will save me having to push the clock forward next time.
Just done that too. I swear when I first booted my phone that option was available. Will try the 2.1 official when it arrives, seeing as I can't find any way of flashing a rom using a Macbook.
No update here, despite plenty of date switching, and trying both WiFi and hsdpa connections. Any tips?

Did you get the update to 2.73.61.92 by setting your phone's date to 26 Jan 2011?
I'm still on 2.73.61.5 - is the .66 update required to do the OTA one?
just to confirm, you definately have to be on .66 (the february download-and-install update that didn't seem to do much) to get the OTA update. As soon as I did that, it came up instantly (in fact, I had to put it off until I could give it my wifi details)

Only got my Hero last week, was fresh out of the box. Fingers crossed that the rumoured update isn't BS...
I also forwarded the date to Jan/27/2011 and immediately got the update screen. The phone downloaded the 3MB update and installed it after a reboot that took 3 minutes. Now waiting for the 2.1.

Cool, will hold off flashing a ROM until end of next week then. One stupid question, does 2.1 offer multi-touch support? I'm itching to give some emulators a go.

Back in mid August Slashgear.com reported that HTC told them there were two ROM updates for the Hero in the coming weeks. The first one should be released "within 10 days", while a major update would be coming in mid September.
As we all know many more than 10 days has passed since that report and we didn't get an official update. My initial though was that they were combining the two updates into one, since it is not a good idea to release two updates in a short period of time especially when installing the update require a wipe.
But honestly, beside the significant speed improvement, there is really nothing "major" in this ROM update, feature-wise I mean. Seeing the release of the 1.6 SDK today, I can't stop but think that the "major update" they mentioned is the Android 1.6 update for the Hero.
If you watch the video about Android 1.6 on Android Developer Blog, they mentioned that a main feature added to the 1.6 update is CDMA support. Since Sprint's Hero will be a CDMA phone, it needs Android 1.6. As Sprint is shipping their version of the Hero in October 11, I guess the "major" update for the Hero may get released around that time too. What do you think?

For being the "minor" update it was quite a big update...
I mean, headphone jack works flawlessly, LEDs are working too, a major speed optimization in the UI/OS... it was a well needed update. Now let's look forward to the Donut/1.6 update.
BRING IT ON Google/HTC.
i hope another update will be comeing soon because i´m missing the announced virtual java implementation

I concur with your reasoning here - Donut (1.6) is required for CDMA, and the Sprint Hero is CDMA. This will have a different radio obviously, but assuming the rest of the hardware is relatively similar (and the specs would seem to show this) there shouldn't be too much work for HTC getting this ROM working on the GSM Hero, so hopefully it will follow relatively soon after the Sprint Hero is released.
Regards,
Dave
The recent update is mostly UI (sense) optimisations. In addition there's a number of serious bugs in the applications that HTC needs to address. Some of these bugs were already solved in the applications delivered with the android 1.5 (cupcake) development-kit, so I really hope HTC fixes them too. This includes problems such as calls and SMS's that are missed, and HTC-mail being unable to display certain messages. There are also too frequent application crashes, if you compare the quality of this android-distribution to that of most regular linux distributions. Applications on a hand-held linux-device should be just as stable as those which are used on a linux desktop.

Do you have a download link?
around to web browsing on the new ROM? Is the scrolling of pages fast on the websites as well like the Iphone 3GS? There was a lot of lag in scrolling web pages as well.
How are the web pages looking now?
Do we have an equaliser on the new ROM as well?
Has it resolved the google calender sync problem?

The Donut SDK is on the official Android website, android.com
Drizzy (and Paul from MoDaCo I think) have said that they have a 2.8something version of the software but cannot leak it yet due to their source. Have no idea what it has to offer but hopefully it's another great boost!
I think this was the "minor" update if you can call it that. and that the bigge one will include 1.6 Donut
Announced by Google and HTC @ Press Event today. Previous phones will receive the update in the coming days once the 2.1 source code is released. Expect HTC to release and update for the Droid Eris shortly after this.
Q: different software versions of Android, some users getting upgrades, others not. HTC -- who will get updates?
A: HTC: Are planning to have some existing models to upgrade to 2.1. Working on it.
Were did you get that info from?
Source plz kthnx.
Most of the information was from the Q and A part of google's press conference today. HTC did not say which devices specificly would recieve the 2.1 update. engadget and gdgt have some of the q and a's in their live blogs from the event. I hope the eris will get the 2.1 update. I will i could help you guys with rooting the phone but wouldn't be much help.

Definitely not, but can't wait nonetheless.
I hope we get it soon. I can hardly stand all the problems that I am h!ring with this phone.
I believe the press release for the 2.1 upgrade was for the Motorola Droid and the Cliq.

So, I thought HTC would release the Android 2.1 update march 2010, then it became April 2010. I emailed them asking why it is taking so long and I get the following answer:
Dear David, Thank you for contacting us. In regards to the 2.1 update, Htc will be providing a free update to Éclair for European HTC Hero variants.’ starting in June', anyone owning an HTC Hero will receive an initial preparatory update, shortly followed by the full Éclair update. For the full update, we would recommend using a free wi-fi hotspot or an unlimited data plan, otherwise standard data charges may apply." I trust that this resolves your query, please do not hesitate to contact us again if required. Thank you for contacting HTC. Kind regards, Federico F. HTC

So it means now we can expect it in June? Do we ever get this update or will it be postponed until nobody is using the hero anymore?
Regards,
No need for the new thread at all, in-fact there has been at least 10 threads over the last 2 weeks saying it is now June (not including the amount of times it was mentioned in existing threads as well).....
I'm so sick of reading these pointless threds. All getting reported from now on.
My sisters hero is on three, it hasn't displayed anything about OTA updates, even the part 1 update, i have advanced the date yet it still isn't doing anything.
Anyone know why this is?
Cheers
Im on three to with a hero, Im just on the phone to three tech support who claim that there is no plans atm for the update on three as they dont even know of its existence. Im hoping this is just lack of communication within three as I only had the hero because of the promise of the new android as the desire only come out around 3 months after i upgraded!
i'd be extremely surprised if the three hero was left out. I read somewhere that orange and three updates are delayed, still not sure why I havent had the part 1 update though.
I've emailed HTC so i'll see what they say and update on here.
I mailed them a couple of days ago about rumours networks were blocking the update and got this response.
Dear Jason Woods,
Hi Jason, thanks for your email. HTC will be providing a free update to Éclair for European HTC Hero variants. Starting in June, anyone owning an HTC Hero will receive an initial preparatory update, shortly followed by the full Éclair update. For the full update, we would recommend using a free Wi Fi hotspot or an unlimited data plan, otherwise standard data charges may apply. We apologise for any disappointment this may cause, but we are working to get this update to you as quickly as we can. In regards to networks blocking updates, you will need to get in contact with your network provider directly for more information Thank you for contacting HTC. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to contact us again. Best regards, Simon A HTC

I'm a "new user". Apologies for the spaces!
Damn it.
Use the goldcard method, downgrade, flash a new ROM. Works just fine. The walkthroughs are very good on this site and provided you follow them it should work just fine. The changes 3 will make to the rom are so minor it really isn't worth waiting for.

I would but it's my sisters phone, should have heard the grief i got just for installing the custom htc keyboard on it lol. She will just have to wait.
As an update for anyone waiting, 3 have been posting updates on their blog here: blog.three.co.uk/2009/12/07/the-htc-hero-with-spotify
They posted today that the update "is being tested and is due for approval imminently".
I've posted a question asking if only part 1 will be available by the end of Friday or if both parts will be.
They replied and apparently the update will come all at once instead of two parts.
Cool - I have a Desire and my Mrs has a Hero... she is complaining her phones not as slick looking as mine so I thought I would flash it... but if 3 are doing an official update I'll wait for that.
Looks like they missed their deadline, but they did release a new statement on their blog.
Thanks for all your patience regarding the 2.1 update for HTC Hero. We have now tested and approved the software and this has been submitted to Google to get the final go-ahead. We’re hoping that they can push this through as quickly as possible, but we’re not clear on the timescales for this yet.
As soon as we know more from Google on their timescales we’ll let you know

Three is delaying yet again. Now they are saying it could be another two weeks.
Three has now tested and approved the 2.1 update for HTC Hero and it has been submitted to Google to get the final go-ahead.
We're hoping that they can approve it within the next 2 weeks and then we can start updating Three customers with HTC Heros.

Why would Google have to approve the update?
the wife has a Hero on 3uk, support told here the update would be by the end of august, hopefully, well at least she thinks that what he said.
anyway she gave up waiting and let me flash the 2.1 stock rom to her phone.
I've seen lots of information flying around on Engadget and the like about HTC 2.2 updates forthcoming, but I have yet to see anything at all about the Aria.
Does anyone have any idea if HTC / AT&T intend to update the Aria to 2.2? Of course I know if they don't, we have some guys working hard on unofficial versions. Just would like to know if we'll get anything official...
HTC has stated they're working on it, and they "hope to have it done by christmas" but I wouldn't hold my breath for it to get thru HTC and AT&T for the Aria by then. Last I can remember, the HTC Wildfire was listed as getting the update and the Aria is very similar to said device. I also recall hearing that HTC said all the devices released past a certain point this year (Aria falls within this range) will be getting 2.2. I'm sure the Aria will get it, but again, I wouldn't hold my breath, CM6 will most likely be in full functioning order before official Froyo
Will definitely be trying out CM6 as soon as it gets in a little more working order! Definitely not holding my breath on HTC + AT&T...especially not the AT&T part of that equation.
Nothing official about the Aria, but HTC Evo is getting some official 2.2 Froyo loving tomorrow.
Maybe with that, we can hope for an earlier release for the Aria.
I wont hold my breath, the Motorola Back flip have been out for how long and its still on the launch firmware. ATT will take their sweet time when HTC releases it to them, best chance is that someone here gets their hand on is and bakes a 2.2 with HTC Sense rom for Aria users to flash with.

Considering how the Backflip went, this isn't surprising. Why could a company back a device that isn't doing much on it's own already?
Might be coming sooner than some of you expect. HTC seems to be getting serious about froyo
http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/28/htc-beginning-froyo-rollout-tomorrow-maybe-maybe-not/
http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/29/htc-will-ship-all-android-phones-in-china-with-froyo-on-board-f/
Granted we'll have to deal with att.
I think we will see one, but it will be a pain to install. The phone, for whatever reason, cannot accepted over-the-air (OTA) updates... there's no option in the settings to see if there is an update like most other android phones. HTC has said you will need to use HTC sync to upgrade. (Though I'm sure many of the people here at xda will have no problem loading the ROM via Sync or other ways, for regular users this could be a pain.)
Thought I'd share. I found this bit of info on the htc support forums in the aria section.

Whne there is an update for the Aria-it will have to be loaded from a PC to your device. The good news is that after the first update for the Aria, Firmware Over The Air will be implemented so that any subsequent updates will arrive to your device over the Air once their are released. Currently, there are no updates for the Aria OS-they are in the works.
So it is quite possible we may be getting froyo because she said it's "in the works." One of the other HTC forum moderators said it may take a while because it will be "tested and approved" by att and that we'll need to update it via sync.
So from what I understand, she said after the first update, there will be more updates released OTA. Froyo is gonna be a sync update so when she says any subsequent updates will arrive, does that mean she's hinting we'll be getting updates past froyo? Maybe we'll be able to get 3.0 ;P I mean what other updates will there be? lol
I'd LOVE to get 3.0, but I'll be happy with 2.2.
There is a post at Unwired review (can't post link until my account is verified.. not sure if there is a way to 'request' to be verified), but it's from Unwired Review. Just google "Android 3 Gingerbread."
But then there was an update to the post:
Update: I posted an update to this post, where I address Dan Morrill’s tweet, and do some corrections/clarifications regarding the upcoming Android update number issues, “minimum” specs – thay are actually only “recommended”, and the the split between high end Android 3 – low end Android 2.2 devices – it’s not an official Google policy, but it is happening nonetheless.

So could we get it? Yes. And I think with the speed htc is pushing out the updates, it's not a question for them of "do we update the aria," it's the same question for many of their phones, since so many htc android phones are similiar inside and out.
Froyo for the Aria is something I have been looking forward to for a while now, and seeing it any later than October would be a huge letdown.
