How to install Thai fonts - Galaxy S I9000 General

As the title says...how can I install Thai fonts onto the Galaxy S ? I've downloaded the fonts from droidsans.com. My device is rooted so what are the steps to install

Don't know if you've had any luck with this but I've been trying to do the same and stumbled across a tutorial on nexusonehacks.net.
Trouble is I can't get it to work on my SGS it keeps coming up with errors on the
Android Terminal Emulator.
Any one have any ideas?????

easy install of thai ( and possibly other ) fonts to android
hi guys, i realise this post is fairly old now, but i did a font install yesterday, so it may well still be relevent. after reading many forums etc i started trying to push with adb but for some reason it kept failing.
so, i had the droidsans thai font pack, looked at what was inside it, looked in my system fonts folder, saw they were all the same, so i thought, shall i?
so i made a copy of the system fonts folder, put the thai fonts on the phone sd card, used root explorer to copy and paste the thai fonts, overwrote the system files, rebooted, and crossed my fingers....
anyway, the phone rebooted, everything still in english ( good! )
went to my thai-english dictionary and phrasebook ( i live on koh samui ) everything was proper thai characters! success! i've rebooted a couple of times since, played with loads of apps and stuff, everything is working as it should.
so long story short, if consoles and commands and pushing files seems a bit daunting, then good ole copy and paste can work just as good.
final point...phone must be rooted, superuser permissions etc.
i did this on a ( former orange uk ) gsm hero running 2.1, installing thai fonts on it, tho i guess you could do it with any language. my only advice...backup, backup, backup! font files i used are attached, and so far my thai friends say they are perfect

Non-English language support

Stock Android currently doesn't support Sanskrit/Hindi (Devnagri lipi Character Set). I see Square boxes like ☐ instead of characters अ आ इ ई उ ऊ on Unicode or UTF8 compliant Hindi websites. Even Google Hindi website doesnt open properly through my HTC Hero's stock Android 1.5 browser or any other browser like Dolphin, etc.

The problem is obviously with the font and Android being unable to recognize it -- which leaves me to believe that the fonts you're trying to use are UNI-CODE and actually should be TTF (True Type Face). However, I would try different variants of the font you're looking for. I did some searching and this is what I've found (below). I don't know what characters I'm supposed to look for, but the site I found seemed somewhat helpful and apparently they might have the fonts you're looking for. If so, you need to push the font files you find to your /system/fonts/ folder of your phone -- but HAVE to rename the the font files. One needs to be called DroidSans and the other DroidSans-Bold -- Case sensitive for both.
If you'd like -- I can make an update.zip file for you instead. All you would need to do however it tell me which font you are considering and either upload the font here or give me a link where I can download and package it. Hope that helps.
Just remember that IF and when you find the font file you need, that it has an .ttf extension -- which is where I think your problem is.

Thank you for a prompt reply. The website you suggested is very helpful and I think Mangal or Arial Unicode MS are the best bet. It took me a while to find these fonts, sorry for a little late response.
Unfortunately, I could only find Mangal.ttf (201 KB) & ArialUni.ttf (22 MB) but not their respective "-Bold.ttf" fonts as you mentioned.
I can use Mangal.ttf in MS Office 2007 to write in Sanskrit/Hindi and it lets me format the text (bold, italics, resize, etc.).
Would it be enough to push this one font? Since Mangal-Bold.ttf is not available specifically.

It's fine that you only found the regular font without it's bold counterpart. What can be done is that we'll use Mangal.ttf twice and rename it Droid-Sans.ttf as well as Droid-Sans-Bold.ttf. The system will accept it, though if you can find a font with both the regular and bold files, that would be nice.
Also, when you adb push the new renamed fonts into the /system/font folder -- they will indeed overwrite the previous fonts that were there. They will NOT be merged.
In anycase, I've created an update.zip file for you to flash. Tell me what happens.

So if these new fonts will overwrite the previous fonts, I hope I don't loose my current stock fonts & style. Just for knowledge purposes; Did you manually merge "Mangal" font into stock fonts?
As far as I know, I would need to root my phone for flashing this file. I have never done it before. But I found steps for it on Unlockr (don't know if I can mention other websites on this forum). I am mentioning the steps below for other people's references, assuming these haven't changed:
Code:
1. Download the following file and then unzip it.
AsRoot2
2. Take the unzipped file and save it into the Tools folder of your AndroidSDK.
3. Plug your phone in via USB and do NOT mount the SD card.
4. Open the Command Prompt and type the following (hitting enter at the end of every line):
cd\
cd AndroidSDK\Tools\
adb devices
And make sure your phone’s serial number pops up (if not setup ADB & USB drivers).
5. Then type:
adb push asroot2 /data/local/
adb shell chmod 0755 /data/local/asroot2
adb shell
/data/local/asroot2 /system/bin/sh
6. Then type:
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cd /system/bin
cat sh > su
chmod 4775 su
Although, I don't know how to unroot the phone after rooting it.
pseudoremora, I have been searching for steps on how to flash a file like "Mangal_font-signed.zip". But since "flash" is such a term that most search results are for Adobe Flash. Do you know any place with step by step instructions to do it for Sprint HTC Hero?
Also, if these fonts don't work. How do I go back to stock condition? Do I need to take some backup?

You should have rooted first before thinking about anything else, but that's alright. Also, I did NOT "merge" the fonts... you can't do that. I overwrote the previous font with the Mangal one. Even if you flash a new font, getting the stock font back on is just as easy as adding a different one.

Before we go any further, its imperative that you root your phone and understand the in's and out's of flashing, using command prompt, and the installing recovery image. Also, you do own a CDMA Hero, for the Sprint network, correct?
All of the information you are trying to find can be found right HERE on XDA. The link will provide step-by-step guides that will walk you through everything you are trying to learn. I would advise reading them, following the steps the best you can, and then asking questions when you get stuck.
I can give the answers, however... with anything new, it's always best to let ones own curiosity invoke the learning process. Myself and others here are more than knowledgeable to help you any way, but even a beginner is capable of rooting there own phone.

Upon rooting your phone and installing a recovery image, you will have the option to backup your phone and ALL its data. Secondly, if for some reason, you do in fact mess up and get to a point where you would like to start from the beginning (Go back to Stock), there is also an application for that.
So, for the time being -- don't worry about backing up your phone or even going back to stock, you need to focus on rooting your phone, installing a recovery image, making your first Nandroid backup, and then hopefully installing your first user created ROM.
As always, I'm here to help. Oh, one more thing... before you ask me, try to search the CDMA Hero threads, you'll more than likely find your answer. Otherwise, you can ask.

So I am now rooted, recovered (v1.6.2), nandroid backed up (stock v1.5) & running DC v2.07.2. I flashed Mangal.zip. Good news is that I can now read Devnagri on Dolphin bowser. Glyphs are messed up. So instead of शिवाय it is showing शविाय. But its Ok, at least its readable. Better than ☐☐☐☐☐.
However, the bad news is that English characters are all bigger & spacier than normal. It looks so weird. Will attach a screenshot tomorrow.

Dude, I am sorry for being MIA. I have been trying for a few days the merged font that I created using FontLab but it makes English characters so bloated that two lines start overlapping each other. For eg. if you are looking at a specific contact in people App, "Call mobile" text overlaps the cell number right below it.
Wats weird is that FontLab doesn't bloat Devnagri characters but only English characters. I dont know FontLab very well so dont know how to stop it from scaling.
I had to revert to stock font. S**ks!
Do you have any suggestion of some way to merge Stock font with Mangal font?

I've never had to merge any fonts; but then again I've only had to read English.
I've never worked with Fontlab, so I'm not sure where to even begin. The reason however I think you keep having problems is because maybe the phone isn't understanding how to handle the merged font... so the Devnagri characters are okay, but the English ones aren't scaled correctly because they were merged or merged incorrectly? Again, I don't know, those are just my ideas.
I hate to say it... but it looks like you're either have to bare with it, choose one font or the other, or what I would do is contact HTC and see if they have native font or any font that they could recommend. I'm all out of ideas, so I don't know what to tell you. Sorry.

But there are issues in having hindi support in this way.
There is Samsung Galaxy phones with perfect hindi support in 2.1 and 2.2 versions of Android. Is there any way to get the Language pack or Hindi IMI from them. And have heard Android 2.3 has bulit-in Hindi language support. But I don't know how to install it.

Problem is most of the world has now moved to the unicode fornts from google transliteration which has become defacto standard due to ease of use. If that helps. Any help would really be very useful.

Arabic font

Hi,
I tried to install Arabic font on my samsung captivate device. In the part of the font installing process I replaced the litewebcore.so file in the system/lib directory. After replacing the litewebcore.so file, the phone is stuck with the At&t logo screen World Phone. On boot up the phone plays the samsung galaxy s sound in the background. Can any body help how to get back my phone to home screen.
can't help you with fixing that unless you flash using Odin and lose all your info (unless you have a backup).
Adding Arabic font should be the same as Hebrew though. You need to find a zip of the fonts that include arabic and then copy them to your system/fonts folder. I can't post links but try to google DeJavu fonts (they include arabic) and just push them using adb (you should be able to google that as well). you only need to push font files (ttf) and that's it. If you wish to type arabic, after you get the fonts installed use AnySoftKeyboard (available in the market)

Just found more info. The only difference is that the letters are not connected. I guess that was the system file that screwed your phone.

I would say just install the fonts and you can view arabic but not connected letters.
Froyo (2.2) should bring Hebrew and Arabic natively, so you can wait for that.
(You need to replace the x's in the link with t's)
I was able to install arabic fonts. But I did not get connected words. To get the connected words I copied the litewebcore.so file and my phone got stuck on the at&t logo screen. I there any way that I can get backup of my data in the current situation.
Do you get anywhere past that screen? can you get adb to recognize the phone? Do you have rom manager installed. If not, I doubt there is any easy way to get back on.
What you most likely have to do is use Odin to flash back to stock. Once you have all your accounts setup make a backup!!! Use Rom manager, it's free and takes just a few minutes. You can always restore and it will save you HOURS! I haven't see any fixes yet for the connected letters but I'm no expert....

[Q] htc_cime for legend with froyo 2.2

I live in China and got an already rooted legend from a super friendly little shop in the neighbourhood here, but it came with a horrendous goapk.com rom which severely locked down my ability to install anything from the market - instead, it tried to force me into this relatively useless Chinese goMarket thing. So, waiting patiently, I finally installed the MoDaCo custom ROM last week and everything is running sweetly.
Only now I find I actually miss a couple of the customisations the Chinese ROM had on it. In particular, the htc_cime was very useful to me because it supported handwriting input - the Google Pinyin IME is less useful to Chinese noobs like me who can't read the sound of the characters and need to input the handwriting.
I have had a http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7276627 rummage around these threads and found lots of htc_cime packages, none of which work on Legend under Froyo. Does anybody have a solution? The apk's that do install die immediately when I try to input text, and I don't know what to do with the zip files available on that site - I can extract them, but then it says "Application not installed" without any further help.

So, a few hundred reads and no replies. Seems like a difficult issue, and obviously not many people are interested in using Chinese handwriting. Should I post this on the development thread? Can anyone at least give some advice on how to install these .zip distribution packages? I know how to install a .apk using the file manager, is some other app necessary to install the .zips?

I just downloaded the .zip file from your link and it had the .apk file inside it and another zip (?).
A zip file is a zip file, they are not android specific, have been around at least 20 years now, it is a compressed file, windows or whatever os you use should be able to open it no problems and then just extract/copy the apk inside to your phones sd card and install it, you also need to open the other zip file INSIDE the zip file (yay recursion) and extract/copy the folder to your sd card as well.
I didn't install it myself as I am still on éclair.
It may be that ZIP files are not Android specific, but to install one you should flash it with ROM Manager or from Clockworkmod Recovery. I don't know if extracting the zip and installing the .apk is working like that. The reason for doing this is mainly because some files cannot be written or replaced when phone is in normal use. From that link I saw it is a signed package (by the name) and it should be installed via ROM Manager or recovery

I tried unzipping the .apk file and installing it, but also no luck. I am fairly sure the .apk installer references the "zi" folder ("zi" means character in Chinese), as that folder seems to contain a lot of files describing the metrics and probably recognition of each character as you write it. Still no luck though.
Using the ROM manager to install packages seems a bit like overkill though - if the Google IME can be installed as an apk without rebooting, surely any IME can be installed like that?
I might ask htc about this when the official 2.2 FOTA comes out, if I claim I had it before and it wasn't in the update they might just send me an .apk that will sort this out once and for all. No big hopes on that one though.

How to delete pre-loaded input languages in my Samsung Galaxy A3

Hello everyone,
This is my first post given that I just signed up to this great and helpful website.
I have got a Samsung Galaxy A3 [Android version 5.0.2].
I added new input languages from the list. I downloaded them and also removed them by selecting and deleting them.
But, I tried to delete the "first" language, the language the mobile phone came with, and a message came up saying Cannot delete preloaded languages.
What do I need to do in order to delete permanently pre-loaded input languages?
Should I root it? If so, could you share in this thread a link to root my mobile phone?
Or could you explain it to me in words? I DO know anyway I need to first backup my files and download some programs.
Help me out please.

I know maybe, Samsung Galaxy A3's haven't yet got deodex ROM.
But, in order to have it, I need first to download "recovery-TWRP" and Lollipop or Kitkat ....is that true?

Simply put, you cannot access anything system related without root, so it's a must.
I personally just delete them through either TWRP or after the first boot, i use a File Explorer with root support to remove unwanted apps in "/preload/", "system/app" and "/system/priv-app/".
However, i highly recommend you to use Titanium Backup to freeze apps, that way you can avoid removing stuff you have no idea about.
I tried to download Titanium Backup but only the PRO version [I have to pay] allows you to freeze the apps.
Anyway, I installed ES File Explorer and managed to get into the folder you wrote
I found the folders you wrote
"system/app"
and
"/system/priv-app/"
and
"/preload/".
I also found the folder 'Fonts' with the ttf files but I think its got nothing do given that the folder is about the fonts, not the keyboard languages! Isn't it?!
Anyway, now where do I have to go in order to remove the pre-loaded languages?

Glad you went for the delete, you may suffer from loss in the future by deleting things you didnt mean to, but you'll learn from it .
Many of the languages are on the system/app , and have something like FontnameKor, with Kor being Korean i.e., however, im not sure if that removes the keyboard layouts. For that, flash the S6 keyboard, looks better too.
There are loads of Debloating (this is what we are doing here) threads for other Lollipop Samsung phones, many of their tips work for our device too.

You'll need root for sure. Also, since you use ES File Explorer, you have to switch the Root option, and also click on it to enable Read/Write on /system/, or else it'll fail again with the same output.
PS, i have not deleted anything at that level, tbh never bothered to. Check priv-app as well for languages, just recalled to have seen a few there.

Can't Modify SecContacts_M_OSup_Note_Legacy_USA.apk

Background: Really not loving the default New Contact icons and the random colors. Should be easy enough to change. What I tried (and failed miserably...)
MODest ROM 11 (Twiz/stock 6.01-based)
Flashpoint 5 Kernel
Copied SecContacts_M_OSup_Note_Legacy_USA.apk from
/system/priv-app/SecContacts_M_OSup_Note_Legacy_USA/
to my Win7 PC.
Used 7-Zip to unpack the file to a temporary folder.
Found the .qmg files I didn't like.
Found a .qmg that would be a passable replacement for the ones I didn't dig.
Made 11 copies of that image in a working folder.
Renamed each copy to the exact name of each of the 11 files I wanted to replace.
Dragged those 11 files back into the open .apk in 7-Zip
On the Phone, in Root Explorer:
Made a copy of SecContacts_M_OSup_Note_Legacy_USA.apk in the same folder:
/system/priv-app/SecContacts_M_OSup_Note_Legacy_USA/
deleted the original
Copied my mod'd apk back into this folder and set the perms.
Rebooted.
No Phone or Contacts on home screen or in Apps
Tried to 'install' the apk from Root Explorer.
Wouldn't install
Tried to delete cache & Dalvik from TWRP.
No Joy.
Tried to do a partial Nandroid restore of Contacts and sec.phone from Titanium (nothing there called /systempriv-app/SecContacts_M_OSup_Note_Legacy_USA)
No Joy.

Back to normal.

That apk took me a long time to figure out too. It's one of the apps you I had to modify for multi dpi. The only way I know of is to change the compression when you're putting the app back together and even then it took a couple tries. There's probably a better way but the compression change seems to work well enough.
I don't know if 7-zip has this option, but with winrar you can change the compression to "store". You should know right away whether or not it worked. You'll see the little phone icon in the bottom left of the lock screen. You may still have to do a factory reset to see your changes (probably not though) but the app should work without it.
By the way, you can swap those image files for .png files if you'd like. Just delete the corresponding .qmg or .pio file.
I saw your post in the rom thread about theming TouchWiz. You should check out @supergrobi94's theming threads. He's put together an impressive collection of options for 6.0.1 and 5.1.1 and there's also a [how to] section that uses the vrtheme zip that will modify the res folder of a specific app without having to break it down. I'm not sure how active he is these days but he's always been very helpful with requests and questions in the past if you need it.

OK, this is from the MODest ROM thread, but I think it's germain here.
SO.....
If I want to 'try out' that Edge Panel, is there a way to revert back to the stock apps in question other than restoring a nandroid backup or re-flashing the ROM?
I ask because I'm thinking that, at least in the case of the Note 4 and its well known memory problems, 'bulk' memory writes like ROMs, nandroid retores, etc., stress the device, so I'm trying not to do it more than I have to.
During my last episode(see above) putting the stock apk back in its original folder didn't work.
Is there a standard procedure for either android generically, or touchwiz specifically, for safely reverting back to the stock system apps after experimenting w/ custom stuff?
EDIT: Just tried something. In Root Explorer, went into:
/system/priv-app/SecContacts_M_OSup_Note_Legacy_USA/
and simply renamed the .apk to .foo
Rebooted.
No Contacts, as expected, but no Phone either??? Not sure why.
Anyway, back into Root Explorer.
Rename .foo back to .apk
Reboot.
Still no Contacts or Phone, so something bigger at work here.
Before I have to restore Nandroid anyway (unless there's a better way???),
I flashed your EdgePanel.zip in TWRP to see if it would restore the Phone/Contacts apps.
Wiped the cache. Reboot.
Edge Panel is now there, but still no Phone or Contacts. WTF???
Last resort-TWRP- Factory Reset.
Now the Contacts/Phone are back (and all my other stuff is gone, lol)
So is whacking the Data a necessity here?
If so, it makes trying out things related to the phone/contacts a LOT more tedious...
Any workaround???

No, it doesn't look like I ever made an easy way to go back. I had thought I did but I'm either overlooking it or it's not there. Feel free to rifle through my androidfilehost folders if you want to double check. All of my stuff is very organized so it could be buried in there somewhere.
If you still need a recovery zip let me know and I'll get one together. I'm actually going to make one anyway but if you need it right away I can get on it. I didn't realize that there wasn't a way back to stock.

That is strange that they are not coming back. You may just want to double check your permissions and that there isn't two of the same apps in your folder. At the time of making that Edge zip I was still using other programs to make zips for me and the major downside to that is having to name the new apps the exact same as the old so it would get overwritten so if it doesn't match you'll end up with two active apps in one folder.
Now I think the best way to do that is to use a binary script (osm0sis has great tutorials for this) to change the app getting replaced to a .bak file and then just copy the new app to the system, set perms, and reboot (dalvik cache/ cache needs to be wiped if it's a framework .jar file). But to each their own. If you can get the job done a better way then I would use what you're comfortable with.
My system to test apps isn't much difference than yours. I think the only thing I do differently is change the app to be replaced to .bak instead of .foo although I can't imagine there's much difference. There's been a few apps like the Contacts app that gave me a bunch of trouble when modifying them but I can't remember ever having trouble bringing back the stock app. I wish I had more insight on that situation for you. If push comes to shove I would reflash the rom zip over factory reset only because the factory reset won't correct the system partition problem, if that's what's going on in this case.

Thanks very much. No rush on that, I'm OK on the Edge version for the minute.
What would be extremely useful if you have some time/curiousity would be to replicate my steps, ie renaming the untouched apk in a fresh MODest flash (i.e. break the contacts/phone function), and then see if you can get the whole thing working again without a factory reset, or if not, why. I see on xda, you & I are not the first ones to be tripping over this contacts.apk issue.
The other thing that would be telling is after successfully installing the Edge.zip, whether you can modify something (like a picture) within the contacts apk within the zip, reflash the zip and have contacts/phone still working with the change active.
I think there just HAS to be abetter way than Factory Resets.
Thanks so much again for the insights. I really want to become at least minimally competent at hacking my own ROMs together so I don't have to feel like such a noob/mooch on here, but I really do appreciate the help.

I'm not exactly sure what's going on with your contacts app not showing back up. Ever since modestrom v8 (I think) I've been doing the multi dpi on SecContacts_M_OSup_Note_Legacy_USA and every time I would test it doing the same as your way. After a reboot if the modified app was no good, then I would just delete that new app and change the name of the old app back to .apk, reboot and it would work again. I can't remember running in to any problems where I would have to factory reset or reflash the rom to get things working again.
There has been a couple times where I've had to factory reset to get a color change to show up or if you're adding toggles to the QS drop down that also (sometimes) requires a factory reset to show up.
As far as the post you linked, that is exactly how I do it except I use winrar to open the newly compiled app and drag the changes to the original. When I drag the changes over I change the compression method from "normal" to "store". If I don't change the compression the app doesn't work for me. The apps that I've ran into where I had to change the compression are: secContacts, secCamera, secSettings, and framework-res.apk. Any other app that I've worked on can be dragged and dropped without compression changes.
Jar files don't need an original signature though (so long as signature verification has been disabled, which it has in modestrom). They can be decompiled, edited, recompiled, and copied to the system. It does require a dalvik cache/cache wipe though on all framework files except for the framework-res.apk and twframework-res.apk
If you get a chance, you should start using apktool to decompile/recompile. It will make things easier for you in the long run and most of the time if you've made any mistakes in your edits apktool will catch it. If you're not familiar with apktool you can try using Tickle My Android or Advanced Apktool. You may also want to get Apktool by itself. I use all three of them. Android can be fickle and sometimes what works with one app won't work with another. What's nice about TMA and Advanced Apktool is that they'll do the drag and drop method for you, but when the compression needs to be changed that's when I use apktool by itself.
Sorry for the word vomit. Hopefully, this all makes sense.
