How to use FM Radio with phone in Airplane mode - HD2 General

Most ROMs do not allow you to use the FM Radio when Airplane mode is on. But, there are some ROMs that allow you to do this.
Does anyone know what you have to do to enable this?

Don't know about that. When in airplane mode you are turning off the radio hardware. Atleast this is what it's supposed to be doing. If you have run a ROM that allowed you to run the FM radio on while in airplane mode then it was not truly being put into airplane mode.

But it is not transmitting - it is only receiving - so it should be allowed.

Transmitting vs receiving DOES NOT MATTER - either one is not allowed. Furthermore, what's the point of using FM Radio while in a plane to begin with? You DO understand that if you are even able to get a station (which you most likely won't) that you're gonna loose contact with it inside 20 seconds...right?

he probably just wants to use the fm radio while keeping the phone reception off, but not necessarily (and most unlikely) while actually being on a plane
And by the way I got to thinking about it myself, but regarding wifi and bt functionality. Turning off the phone by just switching to "off" the "telephone" row in wireless connections settings, shouldn't in theory disable turning on wifi and bt, since they are on different rows. Anyway, never really needed to use airplane mode until now, nor I got out of my laziness to test it for the sake of it

in airplain FM doesn't work. no radio )))

The whole point of flight mode is that it turns off all wireless activity. GSM, BT, and WiFi.

what device do you have? I have XDAII and when I turn the flight mode ON (=all radios are off), I can then click the Bluetooth icon on Today screen and turn the Bluetooth on. It seems to work fine even the phone radio is disabled.
And I agree with AlanJC^^^^^, just keep it off when flying.

You know sounds that come out of a radio when you put a phone next to it??
Well my xda2i makes the sound when running tomtom and it then freezes and needs a reset.
It does it every 5 minutes!! and i cannot use my XDA2i in the car!!
Any solution to this?

I believe there is a problem with that setup whereby the system freezes when the radio is changing gsm masts while mobile, flight mode should cure it, pain in the ass though having to switch off the phone when navigating.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=24268
It has to be down to each individual phone and equipment as mine works like a dream  No reason why changing GSM masts should affect tomtom at all.
I always try to make sure all running programs are ended first as they could be still there in the background.

Disable 3G radio?

Hello all -
I bought a fascinate with bad esn to use on WiFi, and in the interest of maximizing my battery life am hoping to learn how to turn off the 3G/CDMA radio.
Anyone got an tips/ideas? I've tried APNDroid 3.0, but an not convinced that it's doing the trick.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Well, if you feel ambitious, upgrade to DL30.. In the pulldown notifications bar there is a mobile data toggle, along with your gps, wifi, etc. That works well.
Otherwise there are apps that can do it. I know Extended controls has the option, though I havn't tested to see if it works (not using it currently), and from what I have read, Juice defender may be able to as well though again havn't used that one first hand.
Are you trying to disable data only, or the entire radio? Airplane mode will fully disable the radio for you, but GPS probably won't work like that (wifi still will though, as long as you enable it *after* you enable airplane mode)
If you just want to disable mobile data there are plenty of widgets on the market that will do so, or you can use the built-in toggle in the DL30 leak or derived ROMs, as the other poster suggested.
Optimally, I'd like the entire CDMA radio turned off. I dont mind re-enabling it to get to GPS, so I'll do the Airplane mode trick, then. Thanks!
If rooted, juice defender offers this ability plus adds a widget for quickly toggling it on or off.

Cell reception killing my battery, flash radio?

I've got the same tmobile SIM card in my HD2 now that I had in my unlocked iphone, with the iphone I would get 2 bars average and loose about 5% battery in 8 hours. on the HD2 I get anywhere from no service to full bars. It's killing my battery, I'll loose 50% battery in 8 hours while I'm asleep, with wifi off. battery usage says its the cell service thats using it all. Should I flash to a different radio or what? thanks. I've tried different roms, no difference.
You can try different radio, that does help. If you have your phone in a poor reception area where it needs to constantly check for a better signal that will drain your battery as well, if that is the case you can just try toggling off 3g and that will extend your battery life.

I actually have data off, it drained 50% while data was turned off. is there some info I can find on which radios are better for certain networks or areas maybe? the only thing I can think of is turning airplane mode on, I don't know what will happen to texts and voicemail though while airplane mode is enabled.
I don't really use airplane mode but I think your calls will go straight to voicemail and your texts won't go through until you turn airplane mode off. Not 100% on that though. as far as radio info you can check the master radio thread on the windows sub forum here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611787
Most people say 2.15 seems to be best. If nothing helps I'd suggest going back to wm and seeing what the drainage is like on that if it is still that bad it might actually be your battery itself.

This is true. Airplane mode makes your phone a glorified MP3 player.
thanks, I've currently got 2.15.50.14, I guess I will try Leo_RADIO_2.14.50.02**
what are all these radio downloads in that thread? whats the difference between the first set of links and the links I quoted below? are the links at the top and below compatible with the 1024LEO? thanks.

As long as its a x.xx.50 radio its compatible with our tmous hd2. Flashing a x.xx.51 radio will make it a paperweight..
Swyped from my Cyanogenmodded HD2
ok, thanks again, just flashed Leo_RADIO_2.14.50.02**
I read in another thread to let the battery go through 3 cycles before flashing to another radio, any word on this?

that's so you can best judge the effect on battery life, but flashing radios consecutively won't hurt your phone
I still seem to be going from full bars to no bars in my house where as my iphone would be steady at 2 bars. I guess I'll see how much drain I have tonight.
if data is turned off, am I still using either a 2G or 3G network for calls? I'm wondering if seeing full bars is the edge network, and then seeing no service, or 1-2 bars is the 3G network, perhaps its still switching between 2G and 3G networks even though data is turned off?
if this is true, things would make sense cause my iphone couldnt get 3G on tmobile.
This is a know problem with the network, not data dropping, when the phone is locked, aka sleep mode. The only thing you can do is go to settings, wireless and networks, mobile networks, uncheck mobile network first, and change network mode to GSM only. Until someone with the knowledge to do so can find a way to fix whatever is wrong in the us **.**.50.** radios, were sort of out of luck. If you have your APN set correctly, you will get the same data stream as you did on the iPhone, unfortunately edge. Emails will sync, weather will update, and facebook all that will work, but slowly.
the new radio didnt help my battery life, going to see if using 2G only helps, even though I have data off.
I am experiencing problems with this also, I can confirm that switching to 2G does stabilize it however I am still experiencing problems with signal drop. It is very annoying. I'm hoping a dev puts more attention to this than ROM making at the minute. When I get some spare time I am going to look myself.

Sorry about the misleading entry, when you go into setting, then wireless and networks, uncheck the checkbox next to Mobile network. Once the check mark clears then go just below to Mobile networks, and change Network mode to GSM only. As of now, this is the only way to eliminate the dreaded cell standby eating away your battery from trying to re-connect to the cellular network.
I enabled use only 2G networks, with data off. only used about 8% of my battery while the phone was idle for 9 hours. with use only 2G networks disabled, I would use about 50% battery in 9 hours while I was asleep. so I guess my theory is fact, even with data disabled, its still switching between 2G and 3G networks because my house is in a poor 3G area. my signal goes from 2-4 bars now too. It hasn't lost signal yet cause its not trying to connect to 3G

[Q]Android ROM without phone capability

I recently migrated from my HD2 to an Amaze, and wanted to make my HD2 into a media/browsing/app only device. pretty much have it like an ipod touch. it works fine sans the SIM card, but I hate seeing the no SIM card message, the dead bars, and would rather just ditch the 911 ability. is there a media only type of rom for the HD2, or maybe know of a way to disable the phone system and still leave wifi?
Dude y u go for it? Just keep it in flight mode. The radio will be dissabled and will take no battery. But if you try to avoid it, from rom, it may cause problems with Bluetooth, wifi, etc. So u will loose connectivity to internet.
send from my hd2 @ miui 1.12.2

I think if you turn it into Airplane mode then switch on Wifi or Bluetooth manually it turns only those parts on, i.e. no phone/data but fully functional WiFi
ok, that works. but now i would love to get rid of the annoying "insert SIM/emergency calls only" message on the lock screen. any simple fix for that?

Disable cell radio?

I'd like to know what would happen if I took a dremel tool and drilled a hole into my cell radio chip. Very carefully so that I didn't damage anything else. With the exception of the phone not being able to connect to the cell network, would the phone still work as normal??
I'm not doing anything illegal but I'm old and I still believe in the constitution and the right to privacy. And since I cannot depend on my government to do the right thing I would like to see what I can do to ensure I'm not "big data'd".
Destroying the cell radio would be my first choice - no doubts at all that my data isn't leaking via the cell network at that point. If that is not possible does anybody have any other ideas of how to lock down the cell radio completely??
Thanks for you help!

Hi Mrktmind
Sorry if I'm missing something here but ... your first option shouldn't be "Airplane Mode" ?
Nice regards.
.
Thank you for your reply Kdio.
My goal is/was to absolutely ensure that no voice/data is possible over cellular network. I'm guessing Airplane Mode is a function of the Android OS and thus would not effect the baseband firmware. Which is what (another guess) is being used to turn on your microphone remotely/covertly even with the phone turned off. I also want to leave intact the wi fi abilities of the phone.
I have since done some research and realized my knowledge of phone hardware may be numerous years old! Not as simple as locating a Cellular chip and disabling it. Now there are modem chips (some with GPS &wifi radios built in), baseband processors, wifi radios, etc. etc. I will keep researching but it is likely to take me a long while to get to where I want to be as I have very little time anymore. Which is why I was hoping a fellow XDA member might already know the answer. Or at least share with me the right direction in which to search.
Some (mostly younger) might wonder if it is worth this much effort just to keep my data and voice regarding totally legal things private. I would plead with those people to study history and learn what happens when people no longer have privacy or anonymity.
