hold on to your horses, this is a long one:
Why is it that whenever someone picks up my phone they say, "its just like an iPhone" or "its an iPhone wannabe" or something along those lines. About the only thing the Evo has in common with the iPhone is a touchscreen and camera. One of my friends said it LOOKS like an iPhone. HOW?? It has red accents, a kickstand and something I think the iPhone lacks, character. Apple has a lock on the smartphone market for the average consumer, and it infuriates me. The Evo is, IMO light years ahead of the iPhone, as is Android as an operating system. iOS4 is just now starting to catch up to Android in terms of necessary features, and is still lacking in other departments.
With the announcement of iPhone 4, the ONLY thing that the iPhone does better is the display (I would still prefer the mammouth Evo screen), the battery (will have to wait for reviews to confirm) and camera. Also, I have to admit that the video editing on the fly capabilities are very slick. The thing that has pissed me off the most is the "revolutionary" video chat feature in the new iPhone. BULL! With the Evo, I can video chat ANYWHERE I want on a dependable network, not only when I'm tied down to a WiFi network.
I just wish people weren't so "OOOH iPhone" like. Don't get me wrong, Apple makes phenomenal products. I'm writing this on a Macbook Pro with my 2 iPods charging next to me. But I think people really limit themselves when it comes to the mobile market. The only thing I applaud about the iPhone is what it has done for products today, the Evo most likely would not be here today if not for the iPhone. I used my dads iPhone to download and play some random game, in the middle of the game he got a text message. I was absolutely amazed that there was no way to see what the message was without exiting out of my game on this "magical" device. It could've been an urgent SOS from my brother saying he was being held at gunpoint at a bank, or it could've been my mom asking if we had any milk left. How do people function like that???

MODS: delete if anything is wrong with this post, I had to get this off my chest though
iPhone 4 is another letdown just like iPhone 3GS. I had the iPhone 3G and didn't upgrade to the 3GS because it was not enough to move me. Anyone who says Evo 4G is a iPhone lookalike is a fanboy.
They put the iPhone 4 display against the plain ol' background on a 3GS. How are you going to compare a background that's in grey to a black plain one. A real comparison would be a JB'n iPhone 3GS background with a background of the iPhone 4.
I'm open to new things and I will admit I jumped the on iPhone due to the hype. I soon became really bored with it and the fact that my phone would constantly go into safe mode. JB's iPhones are so unstable as far as crashing.
Honestly, the iPhone got so much attention because apple can afford to market it like a mofo.
They are going to deceive people with this whole retinal display BS. I will hand it to them that the built in GYRO is cool. I'm pretty sure there will be cool apps but still not interested in it let alone the price of owning one.
I had ridiculous amounts of drop calls that I still have nightmares. I find myself looking on my Evo screen when I hear silence just to make sure it didn't drop it. Thankfully I haven't dropped a call yet.

You should be safe, I've never dropped a call on Sprint. When my Dad is working in NYC, its not even worth making the call. Even at the Indy 500 a couple weeks ago he couldn't complete a call. Nothing about it makes sense, it baffles me.
The developer community is incredibly strong, but even that argument doesn't hold up too well. Most good apps for iPhone have a Android app, or at least something comparable.
It makes sense none of us get it though, it is an Android board. We've seen the light

Not that i'm defending the iphone or anything, but you can't really do anything about a text message without killing what your doing on an android phone either. Unless you have sms popup app http://www.appbrain.com/app/net.everythingandroid.smspopup

I was more referring to the notification system in Android. In [almost] any app you get a little preview of what the message is and who sent it in the notification bar. It's not perfect, but worlds better than nothing.
Thats the power of Apples advertising. Everyone knows the iPhone. Its so bad that even "tech" people compare every phone to the iPhone.

op, you're wrong.
iphone vs any other phone (best android phone at the moment) is very relevant. Both phones have a lot in common with each other with some key differences.
Well I did notice that the new iPhone seems to have taken some design cues from HTC, I remember when I first saw the leaked images of the new iPhone the first thing I thought was "hey, that looks like the HD2"

The evo is a lot like the iPhone and without the iPhone we probably wouldn't have Android at all. We would be here still making windows mobile 6.1 roms.
I'm a big fan of Android, but give credit where credit is due. Apple created this industry, google ,ade it great, and Microsoft still hasn't shipped a significant update to their flagship mobile operating system.
The average person is an idiot.
The iphone can be successful used by 5 year olds.
Their success is entirely because if two thing. What it does it does well. KISS.
We all should thank Motorola (although they butchered the Android name).
They got the Android OS out there. They have marketed the Android heavily and I am glad.
But because of them, however, is why people call the Android system "Droid."
I guess the Apple fans can agree to disagree and they have that right. When it come to little touches I would have to give the edge to apple on it. I would have given another thought had it had a larger screen to really take advantage of that resolution. But in the grand scheme of things and Apples marketing process they wanted to be the worlds thinnest phone and claim longer battery life and this might not have been achievable with a 4 inch display. The Samsung galaxy is close at 9.9 mm. They added some perks to their software update and now claim to have made the best multitasking method for the mobile phones. We will have to see about that.
What I don't like it the many unfair claims towards the Evo for battery drain. I have not seen those numbers yet on my phone. So to all the journalist tech bloggers who reviewed the Evo please re-review them or correct your article because I only read a few that said "in all fairness the Apple iPhone 3gs lasted just as long". The battery has been what has hurt the Evo more than the 4G network in the reviews.

I wouldn't go that far, I am pretty sure we have WinMo and PalmOS to thank for Android, considering Google purchased Android Inc. in 2005, back when the iPhone was just rumor and speculation.
OK, this whole iPhone 4 fiasco just gets better and better. Now, Consumer Reports jumps in with their fix for the antenna flaw...duct tape!! LMAO

SJ is just too proud to admit that there's a design flaw in the iphone4. Besides the stupid Apple fanboys are still buying it despite the flaw.
Wait, what flaw? There's a flaw with an apple product, nahhh; couldn't be!
I showed this fanboy my evo and he actually wants one now. Hah.
I almost feel bad for the few I know with the iPhone 4.
Almost.
Just give them the damn bumpers like you have for some in the UK.
Still doesn't fix the actual problem but it will help .

I never had anything against apple or steve jobs UNTIL this problem showed up. The issue with the iphone 4 just justified everybody's assumptions about steve jobs and his fan boys. I lost any respect i had for jobs when he made the stupid decision to ignore the antenna issue...
He should have just given everybody free bumpers, that would have been the cheapest and most viable solution...Now he's screwed

You mean, like, by touching OSX in a no no place it won't boot anymore or something?.
why not
just move that gap to the bottom of the phone on futur models? I mean who puts there fingers on the bottom of the phone when making a call or even the top for that matter. The top might even be a better choice. Also isnt the antena a bad thing to be touching most things I read say not to have the antena to close to your face.
And lastly with a case its no longer the thinest smart phone.
Wait one more. How can we call this phone a smart phone with such a stupid flaw, im not even sure we can call it a phone, maybe a mini ipad since it dont make calls lol.
Its like nintendo when the wii first came out, first they gave everyone free better lanyards for there wiimotes, and then they gave eveyone Free bumpers for them. (although the nintendo thing was more of an operator error than a major design flaw)

Its incredible how fan boys will see past the MAJOR flaw and still decide to get the icrap 4. I had a co worker pre order his, so i decided to inform him of the issue. Mind you, I showed him about 5 different websites. He said and I quote "yeah but the new version of itunes will fix that" WTF??? So today i sent him a link to CR duct tape solution and left him a roll of duct tape on his desk....lmao

Yea your buddy is just like any other apple fanboy, stupid and wouldn't know a real smart phone if it hit them in their nerd glasses.
Apple doesn't really care about the problem on current phones. They will have it fixed on the 4g version. Same reason they didn't put a higher res camera on the back and the front. Just more reason for fanboys to upgrade again. Then the 4GS will have the video over 4G instead of wifi only and again another upgrade. Its perfect strategy for apple. Its always worked for them in the past. Why change now??
Since I'm not a fan Apple I found this to be funny. Sure, you'll see some of Google's stuff listed but iPhone is first on the list.

lol, apple has two of the top ten fails and they're one of the most respected tech companies, if it were top 11 maybe the ipad sans camera would be on there.
The only reason the nexus one is on there is how they marketed it, suppose you can also thank AT&T for later selling it without subsidizing it (589.99 for a phone?). I had forgotten about the whole Kin thing honestly. Also the 3D's tv as a failure.... not surprising, way too expensive for what you're getting.
IMHO the iphone 4 is an awesome device, for many reasons. I personally had an iphone 4 but ATT drove me to the wall and jumped ship. Currently I have an Evo 4g and it is also a great device, both having its strengths and weaknesses. **Flame Suit On**
Can't disagree with this list.
Although between Apple's ability to put a spin on things and their customer base being blind to anything negative when it comes to apple "Antennagate" wasn't as big of a deal as it should have been.

What a nonsense post. iPhone is one of the most incredible success stories in modern history. The fact that most of us choose to use an Android device right now doesnt mean we have to go around spewing sour grapes. What Apple has done with iOS is just as amazing as what Google has done with Android. Both OSs can learn from each other and prosper side by side.

Here's the thing, the article is not thinking as if it was an Apple lover.
It's being non-bias.
What happened with the iPhone 4 is ridiculous.
If any other manufacturer would have slipped up like that they would likely be removed from the world.
But because Apple has the ability to put a spin on things and because Apple owners tend to be...well... they'll buy into whatever Apple says...so drones...it wasn't as big of a disaster as it WOULD HAVE BEEN [and should have been] if it wasn't Apple.

So? Because Apple has been successful enough at building their brand that a minor issue which effected way under 1% of users (.55% of iPhone 4 users complained about it, 1.7% of iPhone 4s were returned for any reason) failed to significantly damage their sales what? It isnt fair? Please. Apple hasnt always been the darling of the tech world. They fought, innovated and built their way to where they are now after hitting a low point that could easily have finished them.
"antennagate" was a tempest in teapot built up to drive blog traffic. It just isnt an issue in the real world for the average user, as sales numbers prove.
Google could learn a lot from Apple, they have suffered unfairly in the past because they bungled their handling of PR problems and completely failed to sell users on their new products initiatives. Think Apple would whiff the launch of something like Google TV or Buzz?
Just to say it again, we can be Android fans and choose to use Android devices without being haters. Apple is a great company that does a lot of things very well. The fact that I prefer the phones from another company right now doesnt change that.

You're kinda not looking at this whole "antennagate" the right way. If I can remember correctly, it messed with the signal when gripped a certain way in the person's left hand. Now having said that, the stats you posted are true, but let's look at the big picture here...left hand. If that were reversed and it messed up when gripped with the right hand, story would've been different; which is why it all blew up. Not that many complaints came from it as expected because not that many people are left handed, but the fact that the problem could be demonstrated on tons of devices is the bad part, and thats why they are saying it was a failure. Now looking at iPhones as a whole, no, it's not a failure. But that article isn't looking at the past, it's looking at the device Apple is pushing right now. And if they were looking into the past, then the iPhone 4 would really look like a failure since the other iPhone's didn't have that problem. It's easy for some people to overlook that problem because now everyone basically just texts and emails or uses bluetooth for calling..but still, since that problem was there in the first place, that's kinda sad. A phone should be able to make a call without dropping it.

Your assumption that because I like Android I hate Apple is silly.
I have hated Apple before I ever owned an Evo/Android phone.
I don't like Apple for these reasons listed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10148741&postcount=30
I hate Apple.
They block apps because THEY don't agree with whatever the app is.
They blocked google voice for a year and a half because it was google.
They blocked a magazine app because it had more Android articles than IOS.
They blocked a wikileaks app.
They try to sue because people are "jail breaking" their phone that they purchase and so Apple tries to make it so that you simply buy a license for their products....yeah...**** you apple. If I would have own any of their products when I heard that they would have been sold immediately.
Only four examples of a million.

As you can see NONE of that has ANYTHING to do with Android.
I also take great exception to you suggesting that apple is a "great company"
I have never owned an Apple product and I'm proud to say I never will.
ms79723 post above me covers the rest of your post.
My hatred of Apple has NOTHING to do with my owning an Android. I have an Android becuase I hate Apple. I use to have a Motorola Brick phone too. I don't hate bricks now.
I think they have done some very shady things and that is why I don't like them. They are what MS was to me several years ago.
Start a thread bashing Apple = JOY.
Start a thread criticizing Evo phone flaws = Thread locked.
Hilarious forums these have become.
I think a lot of you guys have become really sensitive and take your phone too personal. Its a friggin phone - get on with your life.
I don't hate Apple, in fact I think their user interface was revolutionary at the time.
My problem is that many people act like the iPhone is the genesis of smartphones. The reality is that Windows Mobile still had more features when the iPhone was first released (cough...multitasking and a huge software base). Unfortunately windows mobile was just plagued with a crappy interface.

Our phones are mini personal computers. We like them to be as big as we can fit in our pockets while not being too bulky or heavy!
Also, regarding Steve Jobs making that comment, well, funny that he says that when his huge success right now is in the tablet industry and you see trendy Apple fanatics carry their iPad/2 everywhere they go! So, if a phone over 4" is an SUV and no one would want that, then the product fueling Apple so hard right now is, what, a jet?
Regarding what Steve jobs has said, I think the Evo is the perfect size.. I am a big guy also + I'm wearing carpenter jeans all the time. Still have plenty of room left in my pockets XD. Hell make the next evo after the 3d have a 4.5" screen just because they can.
One thing to consider is that Apple is not losing users (in fact, its still gaaining a lot of users), it just isn't growing as fast as Android. Some of you are talking about display size and features but like Windows the most likely answer is that Android is sweeping up the low end market. One of the most successful Android phones is the LG Optimus - a free or nearly free Android phone. I even bought two of them for relatives.

Well, if their market share is shrinking to 15% by the end of the year, you bet they are losing users now. In the most recent report, they gained only 0.2% and that was including the Verizon iPhone launch, so w/o that, they were definitely in negative territory.

I think the assumption in your statement is that there will not be improvement in their hardware -- larger screen, dual cores, etc. -- or that a CDMA/LTE version doesn't hit Sprint. And that a GSM/LTE-or-HSPA+ version isn't made available to T-Mobile types. As an OS, Android may rule the roost in terms of market share, but with 30 different manufacturers making an Android device, that's not hard.
The rumors of the demise of the iPhone, I believe, are quite premature.

Apple has around 7-10% of the desktop/laptop market, yet it's one of the most profitable laptop/desktop OEMs. The same to a larger extent applies to smartphones. Android is almost certainly growing because of low to mid end offerings, variability (large screens, keyboards) also surely play a part but its obvious that apple has a strong hold on the high end market.

That's because Apple has created a sub-culture [of complete fools] where people believe every word that comes out of Jobs' mouth [http://www.geekwithlaptop.com/iphone-5-with-3d-camera] and are willing to pay two times the price just because of the sticker on the back.

Of course. It has nothing to do with a preference towards a different OS or premium hardware build. Very few laptops come close, if at all, to a Macbook's build (materials, design, trackpad, keyboard, display, etc.). It IS expensive and you can definitely get more power for less, but you wont find the same build or a 100% stable build of OSX. Some people have different preferences but of course you think all of them are zombies - even the super techy, much better informed people I work with everyday.

Here's what I know:
99/100 times an article like I posted is from an iphone place, not an Android place.
Moreover, my brother had a Mac. An iMac.
That thing was the biggest piece of **** ever.
With a sticker tag of little DOUBLE for the same specs of a Windows based system.
Thankfully his school paid for it and not him.
He actually went back and used his Acer Desktop to do his school work because of how terribly slow and crappy that computer was.
This is not about different preferences.
This is a cult following.

I would personally never own a iMac either, Macbooks are almost certainly the biggest pushers though and what we are talking about.
The Sprint Nexus S 4G was found to infringe Apple's software patents on bounce back scrolling, and one-finger scroll/two-finger zoom (pinch to zoom). It was found not infringing on double tap to zoom. The regular Nexus S was not part of the case.
Discuss.

Edit: user Camlee showed that the original GB NS4G does have the bounce back effect in the app drawer
I'm keeping mine and not giving apple $#!7

Its not going to affect end users at all.
I don't have a nexus s 4g but I'm pretty sure the nexus s and s4g are exactly the same except the fact that s4g can support a 4g network correct? now if the s4g "infringes" on apples patents, how does the NS not? oh my god... It's funny, this whole apples vs samsung case is everywhere, atleast 100 threads on xda and I can't get enough of them.
My Nexus is still better than any Iphone out and any Iphone to come.

You are correct that the network is different, but its not only 4g that's different. The 3g and 2g are cdma/evdo on the ns4g, but on the ns, its gsm/hspa. But definitely, it makes no sense that the ns4g is infringing and ns isn't.

wait hold up- this phone was found guilty of infringing on apple's bounce-back scrolling patent? this phone? the one that came with gingerbread at launch? that ever since then has used the same "glow" animation specifically to avoid this problem?
apple show me where it does, you lying bastards.
How its looks nothing like apple. What are they trying to have a monopoly on smart phones? Or because it was a Google phone

Probably both. Remember that before he died, Steve Jobs pledged EVERYTHING toward killing Android in any way possible.

Who was on crack??
When judge Koh said apple's lawyer was on crack, she forgot that it was actually the jurors that were on crack. It was supposed to take them more than three days to go through all the questions, and they came up with the verdict quick. They even screwed up in the verdict awarding the damages the Galaxy Tab 10.1 LTE infringing $219,694 but they didn't find it actually infringe anything.. What? Bunch of crackheads? The Nexus S 4G and the Nexus S (GSM) are the exact same models, except for CDMA with 4G vs GSM. Why is one infringing and not the other? More crackheads?

Apple's ultimate target is not on Samsung, it's on the Android ecosystem Apple is seeing as a real threat.. Yep, Apple, you should be scared.
It does have bounce-back: youtube.com/watch?v=2_NoU3jYFMk

Not as prominently as the other phones, but it's there.
Huge win for Apple! Ouch!
Now what?
No more updates for these phones?
Interesting to see what happens next

The case is a interest start of more to come. Its basically going to justify apple go after any smartphone that LOOKS like an iphone. Apple has been having lawsuits all over the world about this, but this time they won big in the U.S so now they are going to see how far they can go.

I had been thinking about this myself - why the NS4G got slapped with a violation but not the original NS. There is no conceivable technical reason for this. Except one. Apple did not include it in the lawsuit. Why? Because the original Nexus S is NOT sold in the same places as the iPhone. Remember that of the big 4, only T-mobile does not have the iPhone. And who sells the original Nexus S? Yup. The NS4G is sold by Sprint, who also sells iPhones.
This is more evidence that this is nothing more than Apple trying to clear out competition, and has nothing to do with any actual intellectual property rights.
I would love to see this lowsuit between apple and motorolla.
I think the only reason apple won its becouse samsung is from korea.
Wonder what the outcome would be if the two parties were both from the states.

^ the larger company would win, simple as that.
Motorola won against Microsoft, Xbox 360, Windows 7 and various other products infringe on Motorola's patents. Motorola asked to ban these products but Senators and other government authorities stepped in saying this would hurt the economy.

well thats like bounce-back, but its not the bounce-back effect that apple has patented.
A computer-implemented method, comprising: at a device with a touch screen display: displaying a first portion of an electronic document; detecting a movement of an object on or near the touch screen display; in response to detecting the movement, translating the electronic document displayed on the touch screen display in a first direction to display a second portion of the electronic document, wherein the second portion is different from the first portion; in response to an edge of the electronic document being reached while translating the electronic document in the first direction while the object is still detected on or near the touch screen display: displaying an area beyond the edge of the document, and displaying a third portion of the electronic document, wherein the third portion is smaller than the first portion; and in response to detecting that the object is no longer on or near the touch screen display, translating the electronic document in a second direction until the area beyond the edge of the electronic document is no longer displayed to display a fourth portion of the electronic document, wherein the fourth portion is different from the first portion.

as you can see, for the phone to infringe, it has to show another backrgound after the list is "stretched" beyond the edge. it does not.
