Having some issues? Try a factory reset - Vibrant General

I just did and things are noticeably better with the same widgets and apps installed, far shorter loading screens on the Feeds and Updates widget, etc. etc. the market doesn't take 5-10 seconds to load the next page..
It may just help.. it doesn't hurt to try.

Good to know. But how do you do the factory reset?

Go to settings then privacy

I factory reset before I even used the phone... habit from winmo. .. running smooth for me...

Opera consuming 98% CPU.

Hi All,
Finally got my HD2 from Vodafone, and feeling a little bit disappointed.
The hardware is great, but the software looks like it could have done with a bit more work prior to release.
All I've done so far is sync my contacts and calendars with Outlook and setup my Wifi access point.
Now, when I try and launch Opera, it tries to start and then drops me right back at the browser pane of the Sense UI. Any further attempts to launch Opera result in the message:
"Opera is cleaning up the previous run. Please again after a while."
No matter how long you leave it, it never recovers.
At the same time, Task Manager shows that Opera is eating up 98% CPU, which makes the rest of the device run like a dog.
With the inbuilt Task Manager, you don't seem to be able to kill processes, so I have to reboot to recover the phone.
Has anyone else seen this? Any ideas on how to fix it (short of a hard reset)?
Thanks,
Bagpuss.
Seems like there is a software issue there.
I would hard reset first.
The task manager can be used to kill processes. You need to long press on them, and select exit.
Use smaberg's Task Manager from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=584415
Last CAB in first post.
Now that's what I find disappointing about the whole WM experience.
The idea that I should have to 'hard reset' the device so soon after purchase is just silly. I never had to do this with my iPhone, or any other phone I've ever had.
Software stability on the HD2 seems to be seriously suspect. I just hope that we get HardSPL soon, so that the rom cookers can get to work on a stable rom.
......I did hard reset it, though, and it did fix the problem.
Bagpuss.
Glad it fixed it. Very random however. I didn't have any problems with my device at all.
Everything works a treat.
Same Problem. Every time when I start opera nothing happens.
Only splash screen pop up.
Task manager shows heavy cpu load 98%.
On the second start a message is shown.
"Opera is cleaning up the previous run. Please again after a while.
Please help!!
Did anyone of you having problems with the Opera move the cache to the Storage Card?
If yes, you should format your SD using 32K cluster size. This will improve your opera performance.

Is my phone broken/bad? Q scores <900

Is something wrong with my phone? My Quadrant scores are NO where NEAR where they should be. I just got a whopping 872 I avg 900-1000. I know it might not matter, and that those scores can be manipulated. But a few have suggested this might actually indicate that my phone is messed up and if so – I want to get another one from Sprint.
Basics – I am rooted, custom rom (myn’s), stock htc10 kernel. I don’t know what other information is need to get help with this. I have tried running Q scores as soon as I do a wipe cache/dalvik thinking maybe it’s just slow after that stuff clogs it up. Same result. I have tried moving as much stuff off my sd card and now leave about 1.5 available ( I’ve slimmed my music down as much as I’m willing to do . I’ve tried running the Q score with the kernel set to performance, etc. I saw 1250-1350 one time, but I was using a kernel that was so unstable on my phone I had to ditch it pretty fast (multiple reboots, severe lag, etc).
I also wonder if there is something wrong with my phone because it does not seem to be able to handle anything other than the stock kernel very well. The phone completely spazzzes out with almost every kernel I have tried except for two. I am happy with the stock and have no complaints about battery life. I use the phone when I want and how I want and easily go 24hrs without having to charge. But the fact that only stock and 2 other kernels (king’11 and netarchys) are stable makes me wonder….
If anyone has any suggestions, opinion, thoughts, etc I would appreciate. I have searched and not seen this specific issue addressed.
If this helps, when I check my Running Services, this is what I see and this list varies very little.
Blik Calendar Widget
Y5 Battery Saver
More Icons Widget
AndLock
Handscent SMS
Antivirus
Calendar
Com.smithmicro.dm (have no idea what this is)
New and Weather (I have use the glass clock)
Google Service Framework (cloud to device; messaging)
HTC DM (no idea)
HTC IQAgent (no idea)
Voicemail
Ultra Keyboard
Def sounds sluggy.
My recommendation would unfortunately be to start from scratch. Backup only needed apps that you may not be able to download from the market and completely wipe, flash a stock OTA root ROM, completely wipe again, and flash whatever ROM you like after that.
I know it sounds like a huge PITA, but it should definitely help out.
I had a similar situation once, and this did the trick.
Ugh. Ok. I can try that. I did a full wipe/factory reset less than 2 weeks ago. I use Titanium so getting it all back up is not bad. I also sync to AppBrain so at least if I start with a clean slate I would know what Apps I did have.
Thanks for the help and suggestion.
to eliminate as many variables as possible, i'd do a nand backup, install your ROM of choice with no additional apps except the ones you use to benchmark and perform your tests. give it an hour or so after you flash to let the phone settle down (sync, etc.). you may have apps may be hogging resources or be running in the background (i.e. y5, antivirus) which will effect your tests. report back.
I will try that way first
Yes - antivirus and Y5 are always running in the background. Always.
ha - maybe I'll freeze most of the apps I listed as Running Services, wipe cache/dalvik, reboot and THEN see what I get. But I'm not ever going to realically run my phone without Y5, Handscent, UltraKeyboard, antivirus, etc. I could probably get rid of the More Icons widget now that I have Apps Organizer, but I really really like having one, 1/3 page widget with 8 icones that have ALL my apps organized.
Does your phone seem slow? That is what I would base the speed of my phone on not some q-score. What if you never ran the test would you be concerned.?.?
I would try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=836728 after your nand backup. That has the latest ota, kernel and you would not loose root.
I'll have time on Sunday to try some of the suggestions. Thanks again for the help, I really do appreciate it. I was with a friend this evening, his Evo is rooted and running Myn's rls3 just like mine. He scored around 1300.
And no - my phone doesn't seem slow to me at all. But I've also not used another to know how it might "feel" if there is a difference. I more curious than anything - I tend to research things to death just so I'll know. And I find it curious that my phone is both low on Q scores and can't handle many kernels without it spazzing out.

Having a few G2 issues

I'm having a few issues with my G2 and was thinking about doing a "Factory Reset". I'm currently running Stock G2 rooted with S-off. Will I have to Re-Root after the Rest?
*I'm currently having issues with:
1. not being able to change my wallpaper at all, thru built in wallpapers or thru gallery selection.
2. Recently, since the forced upgrade to the "New Market", the overall performance of my phone is "Jittery" at times. (the jitter is really noticeable in menu scrolling and games like angry birds, very frustrating!!!)
I reloaded the "Old Market" via Titanium and it seem to fix the problem for about 10 minutes before the "New Market" loaded up again. I can't seem to nail down this jitter issue and has prompted my factory reset decision. Is there any way to keep the new market from auto loading? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

What steps are you performing when trying to change your wallpaper?
- via Gallery > Set As > Wallpaper
- via Home Screen > Wallpapers
This happens to me on occasion, and often I have to perform the process more than once to get it to stick. Sometimes I've had to reboot the phone to make it stick. I don't recall experiencing this problem on my previous MT4G or MT3G, just on the G2 and I'm running CyanogenMod 6.1.1 Stable.

I don't believe you can prevent the Market from auto-updating if you're still running with a stock ROM. Have you thought about flashing a different ROM, seeing as you've already rooted your phone? Performing a factory reset may help but it means you have to install/download everything to your phone again. You could try clearing the cache on the apps you're having issues with, and you can do this by going into Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage Applications.
no you will not have to re-root after a factory reset.
Thanks for the input guys! I usually use the (Home Screen > Wallpapers) way to change my wallpaper. I haven't tried any ROMs yet because I like the Stock Rom minus the blotware just fine, If this "jitter" problem persists after the "Factory Rest" maybe I'll try one. I don't relish the thought of reloading everything, but with Titanium it's not to bad, plus this jitter thing might be a conflict between the New Market and some other program I'm running. This might help weed it out....we'll see!
The "Factory Reset" has worked wonders so far, no jitters and I'm able to set wallpapers again. I did have a problem with the New Market automatically downloading all the apps that where previously installed. (after the reset, the old market came up the first time I selected market, then the new market loaded and started downloading every app) I had to go in and stop downloading on each app. I run with "auto updating" deselected on all of my apps, I found this very frustrating, I like to keep track of my updates. Anyway I've been slowly adding back in my apps to see if any jitter pops up, so far so good!

Home Screen shortcuts! need them put!

hey, i've been struggling with the LTE disengaging and HSDPA replacing it for a while now.
anyhow i made my mind to update to the latest factory image fully blowing the phone back to stock, but the thing is and the thing is silly possibly, i need my home screen icons to remain as is after i re-install the apps! is it possible to save their locations? it takes a lot of time organizing
It could be done, from within the setup wizard.
Once you have reset your 6P, you will go through the wizard during the first boot. After logging into your account, it offers you to restore your phone with a previous instance of the device, and its installed apps.
The process will restore the previous apps and also their icon locations on the homescreen.
i don't think that works after a factory image flashing, as that WIPES the device clean from any previous images. thanks for trying though.
It is meant to work. I have recently restored my apps on Android MM, when I moved back from the N preview.
And yes of course, by flashing the factory image.
were you having a google now launcher? because that worked with me but im not using it now.
i'll try what you proposed as soon as the april image is up.
I don't remember precisely, about the GN Launcher. But I am sure that all the apps that were downloaded on the previous instance, were all restored back.
Just make sure that your last apps sync/backup is quite recent. I notice that sometimes this G Sync fails and becomes stuck for days, if not weeks.
Not something that I have ever suffered from. But anyway, precaution is always better than the cure.

Lag, stutter, overall choppy

So this is really bizarre. This is my 4th Galaxy phone and I've never had a problem with screen lag (Note 4, S7 edge, Note 8, S10+). This phone has wicked choppy transitions when switching apps or scrolling. Verizon, US pre-order.
BUT, here's the weird part: I tried to run a few different screen capture apps to post here as examples. As soon as I turn on screen recording, the lag STOPS and the phone is lightning fast. Recorder off -> back to lag. I can't even begin to guess why this is happening. Anyone smarter than me have an idea?
Would go with one of these:
- battery optimization settings (maybe you're on moderate power saving or something?) That would give you an answer to why lag disappears while doing screen recording (phone switches to performance mode)
- problem with transitions? Maybe reduced animations or settings in developer options (animation length?)
- check running services / memory if something is not using too much power in the background
......
- wipe cache / factory reset if not solved
Currently in performance mode - same deal
Memory cleared, cache wiped
Haven't enabled or touched developer options.
I should mention the phone is bone stock. Even still has a bunch of the bloat ware.
REALLY want to avoid a reset. I have a bunch of authentication apps that have to be reset by my helpdesk at work. Ordeal.
Other thoughts? This is baffling.
Check my guide, you can follow some points without doing a full reset.
Thanks, I just did all the things you suggest in your guide. No joy. Laggy as hell unless screen recording. One thing I did do when be was use smart switch to transfer. Any way to roll back what was done?
Maybe you can try to reset all app settings one by one except the authenticator?
Not a bad idea. I'll give it a try.
The smart switch app screwed things up for me. Luckily I'm the Sr. Engineer of my network so I was able to handle the authenticator apps without my help desk since I set up all of those systems!

So did a reset fix it?
Still don't understand why screen recording makes it work fine...
For me. the following 2 steps saved me from occasionally laggy transition animations.
1. setting → battery → disable adaptive power saving
2. special access → optimise battery usage → untake for the app "One UI Home"
