Location crashes browser - Vibrant General

When location access is enabled, google.com crashes the browser. The same occurs with Dolphin browser, too.
Resetting the phone to factory settings fixes the problem...one time. It works the first time visiting google.com, but after that one time it starts crashing again.
Any ideas? It's not unique to my phone because after the problem started I exchanged it for a new phone. The new phone appeared fine until after a few visits to google.com it began crashing again.
Edit: forgot to mention I did some searching and all I could find were some reports by people having the same problem with their Samsung phones; however, no one found a working solution

It's due to the GPS not being able to get a fast enough location fix. Try enabling Skyhook or one of the many GPS setting band-aids in the forum, or disabling Google location in the browser altogether.

I tried changing to ms based and supl.google.com as recommended on the first phone but it did not make a difference. I will look into skyhook, thank you.

Alright, I've been messing with the GPS settings but nothing has resolved the problem. If anyone is reading this, could you visit google.com with location access enabled and see if your browser crashes? I'm curious if this problem is common with the galaxy s.

Try putting everything back to stock, enabling Skyhook and putting accuracy at 100. Works for me..

I had this exact problem last night. Whenever I went to google.com the browser crashed. reboots didn't fix either. I finally had to restore factory settings (erase the phone). It hasn't happened again since. I have avoided installing 3rd party browsers so no problems yet. It is disconcerting to know this wasn't an isolated problem for me. Major issues are popping up for what could have been a nearly flawless phone.

I had this problem too, when I went to google.com it would crash. but I fixed it by going to the browser settings and disable the plug ins and by turning off the "enable location" button in the browser. then kill the browser with a task manager and go to google again. it wont crash this time, and when it comes up it will ask you to allow it to get a location, hit allow and it should work from then on.

Wifi Keeps Turning Itself On

Ok about a couple hours ago I noticed my wifi would turn itself on multiple times, and I turn it off and it keeps coming on, I think it does it when I put my phone to sleep, im not sure. I think it started happening since I installed the Blue Star 5 theme. Any ideas?
Stupid question... but you don't have Locale installed do you?
Figured I would ask. I have mine set up so that it would automatically fire up my wifi because although I get 3G outside I can't get it through my mighty wooden walls where I live. Go figure. Every so often I guess Locale looses my position and it puts me on and off the network. Pretty annoying. So I disabled that and installed some apps to keep my wifi on even while my phone sleeps. There's a few out there, Wifi Insomnia, Wi-Fi Lock, KeepWiFi are a few that I have experiment with. Although since I have all three installed now... I'm honestly not sure which one I'm using.

Hmmm. Well... maybe try seeing if it does it in safe mode if that doesn't work. If it does it in safe mode too then I dunno. If it doesn't then it's probably an app messing with it.
I heard it could be ShopSavvy that is causing that.
If you have an app like keepwifi that basically keeps your wifi signal on, that might be whats causing it. If not, you might want to try other apps that require things such as internet access or access to settings.
We need an list of apps you have installed. Power Manager will do this also.
I too am having this problem!
Sometime the wifi doesn't stay on and I only knew it was turning on thanks to wifi toggle's symbol at the top.
I am running JF's 1.43 RC9 with root etc etc.
The apps I have installed are:
ASTRO
Download crutch lite
DroidFtp
Droidsans tweak tools
fBook
GPS status
JF updater
Meebo
PapiJump
Picasa
Pkt auctions ebay
Ringdroid
Scrambled net
Shazam
Shopsavvy (my suspisions are on this one!)
Skype
Sms awake
Toggle wifi
Thanks
Phil
Okay, figured out what it is. Its the theme u downloaded. Couple hours ago my g1 started turning on the wifi whenever it felt like it.I figured it was something I downloaded recently but I downloaded apps to check them out& then uninstalled them.apps have no effect after u uninstall them.then u mentioned the theme u just downloaded. Well go figure,I just downloaded the same theme wit a few others today.then my wifi started acting up.concidence? I think not.
Lol let me know how u do.
Hmmm, im not sure if its the theme, someone mentioned the setting on ShopSavvy, after I took it off it hasnt been turning on. I still have the theme on btw, but I modified it, so it may have been ShopSavvy
wifi not turning on
My problem is different my wifi wont turn on? if i start my wifi it will show a message that wifi failed to turn on... Can anyone help me on this
Weird, i had shopsavvy from day one, never encountered such a problem. still have it, and deleted the theme. Now the wifi is back to normal. problem with the G1 is, everyone can have the same problems or issues but different solutions with each device lol. the beauty of the G1.
Btw, does anyone know if the "shake awake" app really kills the battery?

ShopSavvy is a definite cause of this problem. I've been in touch with the developers over it, and they have admitted that there's a problem with the WiFi coming on randomly
they've assured me that the next update will fix it. i hope so, because ShopSavvy was useful until it started doing this
here you go guys............i posted this in the Tethering thread as well. this will fix the issue. it is indeed Shop Savvy, but heres the fix, just copy and pasted from my other post:

2. once Shop savvy's screen shows up, SELECT settings
3. select PRIVACY

4. press the button, now it should say "OFF"
5. Exit out of Shop Savvy
Voila.........no more disconnects. I have been tethering for 2 hours non-stop. happy tethering.
my wifi keeps today also itself on
I never installed Shopsavvy. So that cant be the problem.
I didnt changed anything today on my phone

yes, this fixes the issue of ShopSavvy randomly switching on the WiFi and disconnecting ongoing sessions, but it completely renders the most useful thing about ShopSavvy useless.
I've been beta testing the latest version of ShopSavvy, and it doesn't seem to be doing this random WiFi anymore. It is also a version of ShopSavvy that is compatible with Cupcake 1.5.

Wifi and GPS turning on by itself

This happened to me twice today, and started today.
The problem is I see togglewifi in my notifications which means wifi is turning on and has not connected. Then i see GPS icon trying to get a lock on. The wifi eventually connects and after a while GPS icon is gone.
Note: this only started today and task manager only has these programs running at the time: Hello aim, Market, Messaging, Weatherbug, Wall calendar, ToggleWifi and Task manager.
PS. GPS is off for weatherbug and I remember updating Skymap, HadyCalc, and shopsavvy today. It is annoying because it will drop my AIM connection from transitioning 3g to wifi.
Anyone have a solution?
It is ShopSavvy. It installed a service with the latest update. Apparently you can go into the settings and turn it off, but I just removed it because it pissed me off that it would do this without warning.

Thanks, It seems it is shopsavvy and I disabled it. However I'm with you that it irritate me a bit that they would turn on wifi even though I am connected through 3g.
Ditto on shopsavvy, thats a very annoying "feature" they added. It took me a while to figure it out for myself as i had just rooted my phone and was installing all my apps over.
WOW!!!
I thought I was going crazy...thanks, I'll get rid of shopsavvy and hope they ditch the feature, seriously how often do I find myself using the program in an area where it can get a gps fix anyways?
good find
i've been wondering about the wifi turning itself on, too.
thanks.
I been having the same problem thank god i found this post cause its been getting to me and i have been wondering if its effect the battery life. Well will disabling my location in shopsavvy fix this problems?
Yes, just be sure to reboot the phone once you have disabled it. I believe the developer posted on another forum that you need a reboot to get it to stop.
i noticed this too a while ago
http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f12/shopsavvy-invasion-of-privacy-14189/
I was wondering what had happened. Just recently rooted and was hoping that it was not something pertaining to that.
BTW... I am new to the forum...
The plethora of information available as well as the minds associated with XDA is unreal! Thank you all for your insight!

Aria with Froyo GPS problem

I just installed the Cyangenmod 6.0 Froyo on my Aria and I love it!! My only problem is that my GPS takes a long time to get a lock on my location. If I open an app like Foursquare sometimes it will go 5 minutes or more without getting a lock. I got GPS Status from the market and it will get a lock in a little less time (like a minute), and then Foursquare will work fine. Google maps is the same way, it can take forever to find my location. Any idea on how I can fix this or what the problem could be? Thanks.

I have this problem as well, I think this is a known issue. You could try to flash one of the nighly CM6 builds I think one of the last ones runs very well though I have not tried it myself. I find that if i keep gps on it usually doesn't take as long, but if I turn on gps THEN open the app it will take significantly longer.
I have read there are secret menus for other phones where you can adjust the GPS settings, however none of these codes seem to work for the Aria. I havent found anywhere that you can change the settings other than the stock Android ones. This is a pain especially when trying to find something quickly with Foursquare or Google Maps.
Yeah, I flashed the newest nightly build as of yesterday and I still have that problem. I agree with you, it's a bit of a pain having to wait 5 min when you need to get something quickly. Hopefully it will be ironed out in the near future.
Same issue here. Haven't been able to pin it down, yet.
im running the latest nightly cm6 firmware and I havent noticed a slow down in gps detection.
Unless you wipe data, you aren't picking up the newest APN settings.
If you don't wipe data, APN type is currently set at:
default,supl,mms
I just flashed 6.0.2.1 and did the wipe data during the install. Im still having the same problems. The APN did not change to default, supl, mms. It still said wap.cingular, so I change it manually, rebooted. Still having the same problem. GPS takes way to long to lock. Very annoying. I do thank you guys for all of your hard work though, without you I would not have Froyo.

Sounds like you're changing the wrong field. The one you want is "APN type" and is at the bottom of the list in the settings. You probably shouldn't be messing with the regular "APN" field.
Actually I just noticed that. The one at the bottom does say default, supl, mms so I changed the other APN back to wap.cingular. That doesnt solve my problem though. I just timed my GPS and it took 4 minutes to get a lock. This is terrible because the GPS service is one of the things I use the most on my phone.
Me too.
Just thought I'd chime in and say that I am also having this problem, running CyanogenMod 6.0.2.1-Liberty.
If a nightly does come out that fixes the issue, could someone post that please?
Apart from this problem, and two random reboots that I have seen in the past month, I'm loving Froyo. Thank you!
If you're having a GPS lock problem. You should check out full69 nightly.
I found a workaround that works for me -
Menu, Setting, Location & Security and turn on Use Wireless Network. Mine was always off, but since I turned it on I get fairly quick lock with GPS. I still run GPS status once in awhile to adjust the location, but this seemed to have worked for me on CM 6.0.1.
The last few nightlies I get very fast gps lock. I'm currently running the build 75 nightly and the only complaint is that the phone will lock up when I try to use blue tooth.

[Q] Frequent reboots

From what I read it is caused by the location services and turning them off seems to help my N4 not reboot a few times a day.
Has anyone found a workaround short of disabling location services? Google should have released a software update by now if it is indeed caused by a bug in the OS.

rom or kernel, mods, tweaks, who knows what. android 4.2 afaik does not have any rebooting issues.
I just run it stock, not even rooted. Here's a post I found when I was looking into the sudden reboot issues. I don't use HD Widgets either, though I do have the stock Weather widget on the home screen, I should try removing it and see if it still does it.
http://blogs.computerworld.com/android/21427/android-42-random-reboots
I used to blame Bluetooth on the reboots as i correlated it with using Bluetooth in my car, but it turns out it's the location services that are triggered more often when you are in motion.

Random apps will think I have no network connection, when I obviously do... help!

Hey guys,
This problem has been going on for a week or two now. Phone worked great when I first got it, but something must have changed (newest Verizon update, perhaps?)
Let me preface this by saying I've seen this happen both on Wi-fi and 4G. When on Wi-fi, and it happens, I've tried turning Wi-fi off and still get the same errors.
The apps affected seem to be random. A couple days ago it was Google Maps, I was getting the "offline navigation" prompt. Today it was Chase (couldn't screenshot it), TeamViewer, IMDb and so on.
Here are some screenshots. Note the time in the pictures.
- First encountered the problem when opening TeamViewer.
- Did a Speedtest to confirm that yes, I'm really on 4G as the phone shows, and it's quite a stable and fast connection too.
- Let's try some more apps. Here's Target's Cartwheel
- Delta app? Same problem.
- TeamViewer Host app. Same problem as the client.
- IMDb. One more random one not working.
- Lastly, I went back to Pokémon Go to confirm I DO still have network connectivity (not sure why the screenshot got ghosted like that, but you can see I just redeemed items from a Pokéstop I was near with no errors)
So as you can see, the phone itself, as well as certain apps, work fine. But others don't. I tried turning airplane mode on and back off, disabling/enabling mobile networks, nothing works. The only thing I can do is reboot the phone.
Any ideas? This gets incredibly annoying as I can't seem to go a whole day without *some* app whining that it has no network access. Some apps work flawlessly every time (like the aforementioned Pokémon Go) but others don't.
By the way, that little screenshot button in the bottom left is from this neat app called Custom Navigation Bar. I'm pretty sure that has nothing to do with this problem, though, all it does is add buttons.

No I don't have power save mode on. Should I turn off the power monitoring of apps as well? Didn't think that mattered as long as power save mode was off.

I turned all the power saving stuff off and still have this happening. As in, I set it to not even monitor how much power each app is using.
