I may just be missing this, but how do you turn off mobile view for websites using the native browser?
thanks in advance
I am looking for the answer to this too. I have searched high and low to no avail. Anyone have any luck with this?

Same here and no luck myself.....love the browser but can't stand the default mobile view...
The answer? Download skyfire browser from market....on the Vibrant it appears that Skyfire just layers over regular browser (both run simutaneously) and you can still use the regular "Web" icon, but with the skyfire settings.....i'm using it and loving it right now
The phone's default user agent is set to "mobile device" or something like that. Someone needs to either mod the browser to allow different user agents, like desktop browser, or needs to port over Loccy's browser.
Or you can use Steel, Dolphin, etc...
I posted this reply in a thread on the T-Mobile.com forums, so just in case it helps someone here, I'm copying and pasting...
Caution: We tried googling for a solution to enable desktop mode by default on the browser and found instructions on a few sites that had you enter "about:debug" in the browser address field, then hitting go, then going into Menu > More > Settings and scrolling to the bottom where you'd see another set of options under "Debug." From there, you would change UAString to "Desktop", however, this resulted in the browser crashing every time it was loaded.
We had to Hard Reset to get browser functionality back.
Note, I had heard a guy mention having the same experience in a Youtube video a while back when trying to change this setting on the unlocked Galaxy, but I was kinda hoping I'd get lucky with the Vibrant.

The Phone's User Agent is :
Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.1-update1; en-us; SGH-T959 Build/ECLAIR) AppleWebKit/530.17 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/530.17
So basically the websites simply look for Android in that and say oh that's a phone, give them the mobile site.
try entering "about:debug" in the address field. Then go to browser settings. You should see an option where you can change the user agent to "desktop".
about:debug will make your browser crash all the time and then you have to clear the data for the browser in manage application to get it to work again. It doesn't work.

Consider Dolphin Browser HD
I can see no drawback at all in using Dolphin Browser HD on this phone. It didn't perform too well on the G1. But works great on the Vibrant. Gestures, tabbed browsing, mobile view/desktop view, plugins etc.

Tried that myself last week, easy solution is go to manage applications, filter ALL apps and look for the browser app and just hit reset/clear or something like that. Didn't have to reset device.

I recently started using pie+2.1. It works well in alot of respects. I went into plus options, and changed the "user agent" to IE6. But when i go to espn.com. It forwards me to its mobile site, Which is completely stripped down and only text. How can i get it to recognize it as a desktop pc as i can with minimo and opera?
thank you
anyone? Its still happenning. Is there another site i could go to. I have a feeling pie+ isn't working at all for me, and every site still knows i am using a mobile browser
Did you restart IEM and/or fired up a enw tab after changing the user agent?
The given website does recognize my Wizard as a desktop browser in IEM:

Another problem may be that you've still using the default Pocket View mode. Change the View settings as can be seen in the above image.
Yes, i had. I had restarted the browser and the phone. espn.com still saw it as a mobile browser. And now i went back to settings to make surei had everything set right and i got this error "cannot load option .dll" This is the second time this has happenned.
reinstalled pie plus again. Set the option to IE6. Standard desktop view. ESPN.com still rerouts me to http://wirelessproxy.espn.go.com/wirless/wml/index
Has anyone else had similar problems?

Strange. Now, try to manually set these parameters (I've written a full article on all this at http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=796&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 ) - or, do check in the Registry whether they are set by navigating to, say, http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com to see whether you're auto-redirected to a mobile version.

Yes, ESPN is using some other method to detect PIE as a mobile browser.
Pretty frustrating actually... I've had the same problem.
I have also found though Opera Mobile is given the true ESPN web page, not the **** mobile version.
As of right now, I don't think there is anything that can be done about it. You either suffer with the horrid mobile page in PIE or use Opera Mobile or some other pocket browser to view the site.
It seems like there is another website out there I've ran in to that does this same thing... can't recall if off the top of my head though.
ESPN web site designers apparently suck.
use spb tips & tricks tweaks utility instead . select tweaks - network - pass off as ie 6 .I don't know about espn but when i select pocketpcthoughts which is a heavy site for pocket IE when i select that option it shows the full site with all it's ads and everything and when I uncheck it it shows only articles .When I select that option and install pie plus it stll shows user agent as mozilla or IE 4 .maybe they have got their method of turning that on and i have noticed the software makes browsing slow . i use spb pocket plus add in for saving the page and open page in new window option
ok, now this is crazy.
I changed my PIE+ options to identify as IE6.0 and restarted PIE, and instead of typing in espn.com, I typed espn.go.com, and it's loading up the standard espn web site.
Now I changed my PIE+ options back to identify as PIE and type espn.go.com instead of espn.com and it loaded up the standard site again!
So, OP: try using the espn.go.com url instead of the espn.com url.

(Without giving it a try so I may be wrong must be the additional X- HTTP request headers IEM sends out. Unfortunately, it's not possible to supress them. (See the "Still missing: Removing of custom UA headers" section at http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=1125&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 for my explanation for why these headers may be a problem - just like in this case, it seems.)
thansk for all your help guys. I learned alot. But unfortunately i did have ot use the espn.go.com. And thats only unfortunate because websites are seeing through pocket plus. thanks. you solved my problem and then some.
hello
Ive been looking for a way to not have the browser go to htc.com when you push launch browser on the internet tab from touchflo. Ive tried removing it from opera as default start page but it still goes to htc.com when i launch it from touchflo.
any ideas?
I had this issue too. Just use a registry editor (e.g. http://freewareppc.com/download/utilities/phmregistryeditor.shtml ) and search for the string "www.htc.com" or go directly to:
HKLM/Software/HTC/Manila2D/InternetWidget/Customized/
and change the BannerURL and BannerURLText to any Site you want, I use www.google.com/m ..
Yes. This is a 'huge' problem with this browser. Whatever you type in the box every time is loading www.htc.com
I've found a decision with registry, of course
Go to HKLM\\software\HTC\Manila2D\InternetWidget\Customized\BannerURL
It's written www.htc.com. Type another site, what you want and restart Jade
PP I'm too slow
Thanks alot guys,
that worked like a charm
When we are talking about Opera, what version do you prefer - 8,65 or 9 beta?
IMO 9beta is more convenient for browsing thanks to the double click for zooming.

Now I'm watching the posts here and hope we can get good cooked rom for jade. If yes, I'm trade in my elfin and get the jade in hand.
reg key doesn't work here..
I've searched the registry for htc.com but no joy here. No manila2d on this unit.
Anyone else found a solution to this nagging problem where only "Manila" exits and no htc.com to change? Searched every other htc.com value/key/data also, but nothing seems to prevent the htc.com page from loading up when launching the opera browser.

Navigate to \Application Data\Manila and find a file called “InternetPortal-en-US.xml” and edit that to whatever you want your home page to be.

Ok, now I get it. As some bookmarks are in there right from the hard reset, it seems as if they are listed first, and all other bookmarks come up below. So just scroll down and you will see them.
Second way: Lower left, there should be something like "all bookmarks" on the touchscreen. Choose this one and you will get to your bookmarks directly:

If you have M2DC, check the Internet Tab. It should have \windows\operaL.exe as default (or whatever browser you prefer)
OR
Check HKLM\Software\HTC\Manila2D\InternetWidget\OperaEXEFile

I've had my 3G for all of 24 hours so bear with me.
I followed the instructions at the reference and successfully edited the file... to no effect.
Do I need to tweak the registery as well?
Thanks.
1) The browser doesn't have a way to force desktop versions of sites. Even with about:debug some sites will not allow it to view the desktop versions. This renders flash useless for me because the reason I wanted flash so bad was because I wanted to watch the Daily Show on my phone. And that website doesn't fall for about:debug while hulu does.
2) can't stand the one blink per 15 seconds notification light rate. (i know this will be remedied soon by some app)
3) can't install HTC_ime keyboard (im sure this will be fixed soon)
4) no pinch to zoom on mobile websites.
5) protected apps like documents to go are not working right. I paid good money for that app and I need it to work. I don't need just a document viewer but an editor. I'm sure that will be fixed soon but its not fun having an app that you paid 15 bucks for not working.
6) the very nice text selection method in the desire port.
7) Sense UI and all the great HTC widgets of course but I can't really fault Froyo for that.
I'll wait for Paul's next desire port with Froyo's additions. Until then I'll stick with r22 of the desire port.
try rotating the phone and then refreshing the page to make it load as desktop view..it worked for me
HTC Sense Keyboard is already working (except the voice to text bit).
Well I just moved from r22 to froyo and I think i will stick to froyo. I really miss the nice large contact photo's, favorites widget and a few other sense stuff, but FLASH 10.1 is a dealbreaker for me. My own website finally looks great on the phone, made it using Flash ofcourse.
my car charger stopped working when i updated to froyo.
i did a nandroid restore to my CM 5.0.6 and it worked just fine.
i dont understand...haha.
Um... I had NO problem watching Daily Show on CC's website. I'm stock.
You just go to the bottom of the "mobile" page and click on "desktop" page, then scroll down the left side and click on full episode under Daily Show.

That's one way to do it... but it's totally not necessary on CC's site... at least not to watch Daily Show or the Colbert Report. I tested both earlier and no problem. You just need to select the full desktop site from the bottom of the mobile page because the links to those shows doesn't show up on the mobile version.

Yup. The only site I know of requiring that is Hulu.
I'm happy to be corrected and note the corrections, no need to say "owning" and all that..
Anyways, when I did the UAS string fix and went to comedy central, and yes I went to the bottom of the screen to click dektop site or whatever, it worked but it still told me I needed to download flash player even though I already had it and it worked on other sites like dailymotion, and hulu. Maybe I need to try the rotate the screen idea, and I'll be glad if that works. That's good news if it does.
Pinch to zoom on mobile sites like m.facebook.com was helpful, it didn't zoom the whole thing, just made the font bigger, while keeping the same column format. It was useful to me. If it works in this then that's great.
And if the HTC_IME keyboard is having problems with voice to text input, then it's not fully working. I use that feature and find it very handy.
I still feel the text selection method is important as I am often copying and pasting stuff between emails and browser and chats. Its very nicely implemented in the desire port.
And yes I did reinstall docs 2 go multiple times. I know it will be fixed soon if not already, it was just a pain in the ass to first not see any of the apps I have downloaded in my "Downloads" on the market, and then to not have my most expensive app not work right.
And I love the native widgets of the sense UI.
I'm glad to hear that the flash is working and the keyboard are working, this is good news. I still feel that until there is a desire port with froyo capability, I'll wait.
If you need to either documents. You should get a winmo phone. Its why all of mine were winmo before.
But I rarely edited docs.
I went back to 2.1 (Cy's latest 5.0.8) because of:
- speed is really not all that different - at least not in the apps i'm running and the way the unit operates.
- battery life is a bit better
- trackball wake up - c'mon froyo....
- latest 720p video
- picture resize - they are locked in 1.2 mb in froyo...and I can get them as small as 130kb in 2.1
- always liked Cy's roms, anyway. WAiting for his froyo, I'm sure all tweaks will have been worked out - soon
So my big hope for this year's Google I/O is an update to Honeycomb. What do you think will be in it, and what do you wish would be in it?
I presume there will be no update to honeycomb, instead the launch of icecream sandwich? Fingers crossed. It would make sense then that they keep us waiting as they're ironing out the bugs in a phone compatible, cross device format os

Although, re your question I would like to see some reputable software houses getting behind android tablet with some more honeycomb optimized releases. Looks like io has a strong contingient of Google partners showing how they've worked with the platform

On the PDF of all the scheduled events they have a Honeycomb segment so I can only assume we'll get some love.

That's only in debug mode, and if you close it and reopen it's back to mobile. It's a simple fix to add the option to the normal settings and make it permanent. I think they've made it difficult to encourage webdesigners to design for android tablets.

Hello everyone, I'm the dev for Javelin Browser. Javelin was launched less than 2 months back. And now, I am putting extra effort in making it work perfect on the Nexus 5. I think, Javelin browser is the best browser for Nexus 5 over Chrome or any other browsers, for the following 3 reasons. A - MULTI-TASK truly with Javelin Stack. AKA Link-Bubble functionality. Javelin Stack allows you to Open links in other apps and view in without switching back and forth to the full browser. B - BLOCK annoying ads Native ad-block means faster load speeds, use less data. C - KITKAT TRANSPARENCY Javelin is the ONLY browser that makes full use of KitKat's transparent status and navigation bars so you can view the entire website on your screen. Other Javelin features:
[*]1-touch navigation gestures
[*]Built-in VPN
[*]Uses AOSP WebView
[*]Reading mode

------------------ What do you think? Feel free to reply to the thread on your feedback and if there are any issues on Nexus 5, so I can make Javelin Browser better for current Nexus 5 owners
Note : I'm not the original developer. The thread is gone and no reason was given so I'm not sure if it was moderated or not, if it was please delete. Thanks mods. Hence the repost, because this app was made with the Nexus 5 in mind. I have talked to the OP about posting this and was given full permission.

Thanks! Still looking to accept any feedback and questions
Trying now
Glad it's back one way or another. Only thing so far is the font is too big. An option to make it smaller would be nice.

This is amazing just like you said built with the Nexus in mind. However, I think it could still use a one improvements to become more fluid but I admire the transparent system bars and the way it automatically uses up full screen while scrolling. I'll define rely recommend it to others.

Great app, love the color schemes and transparency of nav bar.
Has anybody been able to import bookmarks from your other browser(s) into javelin?
I really don't feel like creating them all over again
Mr Javelin, (lol)
@javelinbrowser
My only annoyance with the browser is when backing up or pressing x on the open tab, please make it go back to the home page rather than this black screen only to have to make it load the home screen again because there's nothing else you can do from there
I've just noticed a fairly big issue for me: If I select "request desktop versions" of websites in the settings (by the way, please remove "update" from "update settings") my wireless provider instantly claims I am using my phone as a hotspot and disabled my data connection... is there an alternative desktop mode method that does not make my provider thing I'm tethering?
edit: didn't mean to quote there
edit 2: requesting desktop mode on a site-by-site basis (rather than blanket through settings) it still does it. Doing the same thing through Chrome for Android, however, loads the desktop version as normal without triggering the tether warning.
Suggests to me that the user agent string being used by Javelin for requesting desktop sites is different to that which Chrome uses... could this please be fixed to use the same as the Chrome for Android desktop mode?

Hey! Love this browser result... I have noticed one thing that I can't find a resolution for, if you're browsing a long page there's no quick way to scroll all the way to the top and the address bar doesn't seem to show up before that.
Other than that, it's awesome. just my feedback

Swipe down with 2 fingers and the tab window opens. Then you can double tap on the tab and it will scroll to the top of the page.

Let's hope in the next version of Android, Google will release a better WebView that will NOT be laggy. Hopefully one that use for Chrome.
Guys since the 4.4.3 update things on Javelin seem much faster for me. Not sure if placebo or not, can someone else confirm this?

Either it's placebo, cleaner cache, or the update included some performance tweaks to webview...
Really nice browser you created :good:
Faster than Firefox and Chrome and the features are cool. G+ community joined!
