[POLL] Which gsm hero rom is CURRENTLY running on your phone?
Choose one and we'll see what's going on in the world of our little gsm heros.
I don't see a poll like this for gsm hero - certainly nothing with current roms.
Good idea for a poll! I too would like to know what is happening with our little Hero(s).
thanks
I decided to limit to only one answer, what's running right now, since many of us nandroid and flash regularly we could end up with the 5 or 6 most obvious answers all being voted for by everyone. to me that's just silly.
at least this is scientific: if not absolutely indicative of everyone's favorite rom, at least it's indicative of the current choice.
Could be used for a trend chart if in the future we do the same poll again and compare results.

Dito, and voted as such
note: I kept results anonymous (hopefully) so if you wish to keep your status private you can still vote.
happy to see people posting openly though of course
wow hahaha reload first page of gsm hero development forum and every rom thread's most recent post is my link to this poll.
I wanted to be fair so tried to post the link for every rom that is getting current thread discussion.
but no posts there after my posts, even after 15 minutes or so - I suppose everyone's here voting.
pretty much the results I expected aside from the mass of gb users!
surprising about rcmix and tegro - I know of some users of those roms currently.
wow - you VR12 guys - you could consider backing up (using nandroid) and trying out RCmix or tegro. they're both much newer versions of sense roms that are quicker in some ways and also offer newer nicer features (newer widgets and other good things). but good that you're happy with vr12 still
Cheers

Hey dkelley, long time no speak (again)
Interesting you mentioned VR12... I have been looking into security of the Android platform, and I would strongly recommend people move off Sense-based ROMs, and onto a Froyo custom ROM for now...
I am not at liberty to give details of the exploit (and I don't have full details), given most non-custom ROM devices will sit for the rest of their lives, vulnerable to this, but I understand that the 2.1 ROMs have some pretty serious security holes in the browser system, which appear to be better in the last set of sources I pulled from CM on the froyo tree (for FroydVillain 1.7.x)
So while it's interesting to see people still using VR12, I would suggest everyone on a Sense-based ROM moves to a "proper" 2.2 vanilla ROM. I don't think a Sense UI 2.2 ROM would be safe, so I'd discourage those too. It appears you need something CM based, and pretty recent.
As such, I would urge anyone using older CM-based ROMs (say from before November or October) to upgrade if they are concerned about security while surfing the internet. HTC don't seem to be interested in fixing the vulnerability, but I checked FV 1.7 and it is not vulnerable to this one attack.
If you support the idea of HTC being pressed into updating their phones (remember that EVERY user of the Hero, who isn't on a custom ROM, is vulnerable to any security exploits, which will not be fixed unless they do an update), then check out http://bit.ly/fDGHPV, where I am trying to get some support together before I contact HTC and mobile carriers.
PS Don, I seem to have derailed this a bit... Figured it was perhaps best to post this in here, since there's no point in making a new thread that we want to get many people to do, and you already did the "donkey work" so to speak. If this derails the thread, I'll sweep it out into another thread if you want

Hi....
Do you have any CVE references ?
http://cve.mitre.org/
This is just a blog with without any CVE-refs as I can see.....

Hey Pulser
surprised you didn't send me a warning for spamming the same post linking to this thread in like a dozen gsm hero threads within 5 minutes yesterday LoL
Interesting, and a little scary, what you're saying.
But being the scientific (and slightly cynical) type I tend not to believe anything without either proof or at least further information.
I'll read up on it some - but can you summarize the possible type of damage? such as gathering of private data by parties who know about the exploit? or damage to the phone via intentional cause (again by parties in the know)? or what

I went back to Cronosproject 1.7.2 from gb beta 6. Even the massive headway they made thus far has been awesome with Fee and Ele together I can't see how it can be made as good as 1.7.2. Its way behind on performance and hogs memory with the minimum system and regular apps installed. The battery seems awesome but not much in there to use it. I'll wait till full release or stick with this rom. I can have a desire on wife's upgrade but I fancy something more now.desire is very quick.

agreed but give it time, and disagreed about "hogs memory": using the available memory like crazy is done to speed up performance, it's not hogging anything in a bad way. when something else requests memory that memory is freed up.
gb's memory manager is years ahead of it's predecessors
but yea, it will take a while.
Note - it's at 0.0.7 now and has everything working except camera which they're working on. performance is always improving, all sensors work now, and it's pretty amazing.
I just need a more stable build for now dude. Grafix and app issues made me revert. I'm sure with input on Cronus now they will make it much better. They need to get used to each others methods of building. I love it on there and not many will give it the dedication that Feeyo puts in. Ele is not dissimilar so expect great things. The futures bright

agreed. was just correcting you about the memory hogging thing since it's a good thing not a bad thing.
edit: well, not agreed about stability LoL. sorry I keep doing that . I'm running it and have for days and it's super stable. gui speed has improved a ton now too. you wouldn't know you were in such a new rom if you tried it on my phone cuz I disabled the animatinos etc very carefully in various settings places and use LP and so on.
BUT for me the fastest rom is still cronos eclair lite - it's gui, with LP, is noticeably faster than with other roms. If only it wasn't 2.1 based (with it's EXCEPTIONALLY slow and crappy applications manager and so on).

I just had fc's with too many things. Neo, quad, then regular apps and no market. With minimal apps it was slowing right down. I figured that no matter how good the memory allocation manager if you don't have the physical memory the manager can't work right. I'll wait. Do you have basics like market working?
I never had any kind of lag with 1.7.2. The GUI is awesome. It benches close to the desire.

everything's workign perfectly, no FCs, market's been fine for several versions now for most of us. everything except camera apps and certain specific graphics apps work great now.
neocore's broken, doesn't matter of course, same with quad, it's not relevant to anything. They're apps designed for certain operating system versions and hardware and the hero running gb doesn't fit the bill. those are are irrelevant apps that can be dismissed.
I play lots of games and they're working just great. all productivity and utility apps are great.
audio and multimedia stuff are fine too. not really sure where you were getting FCs but it sounds like it needed a new wipe and reflash possibly.
but then there's that strange thing were not every rom works on everyone's hero - I'll never know why, but I swear it's true
apps2sd and so on are working now (with a patch from elelinux). there's something that's slowing down the gui and animations still, and I accidentally had my gb phone running super fast in those areas when my app2sd flash borked. So I know a solution is possible to that last little bit of performance...

haha - well hopefully it'll work better for you now than it did before. you will find slow gui screen animations at times though so it's worth disabling all of that and using launcherpro (if you can find launcherpro anywhere considering fede's rather frustrating emergency issue at the moment).
My launcher pro plus backup will work wont it?

I have had probably 8-12 Android handsets. I recently switched to an iPhone from my EVO and I hated my iPhone. I wanted to go with something pretty similar to my EVO so I checked out the screen, specs, user reviews, etc. The Droid X sounded great, but since having it, it locks up, freezes, and Lags like a G1. This NOTHING like my EVO and is disappointing to say the least.
I'm really hoping that a custom ROM can speed up the interface and possibly help with the battery life. Any recommendations? I don't want to theme, or skin...no interest in changing the bootlogo, etc... I just want a nice and FAST phone.
I use a lot of apps...I DON'T let any apps refresh automatically though. I also use Launcher Pro. Thanks in advance.
(Please don't tell me to read the sticky. I have. I need some real life experienced reviews....maybe people who have had an EVO or who understand what I want. Thanks)

LMFAO, i wrote the sticky, which has instructions on how to root and while I havent had the time to update everything I did cover some ROMs which include what you have asked for, so not quite sure what else you could be looking for.... But if you really want an explanation:
Root the phone using z4root and then try out a ROM like Rubix Focused 2.0.1. Drod2169 built the ROM and I am currently using it. The interface is very quick and responsive. He has added in multiple governor settings for overclock which include a conservative governor to allow for better battery life. You can use apps like Droid Overclock (jrummy16) and setCPU to change these governor settings as well. Rubix does very well when overclocked if that is something you are interested in.
If you are looking for a ROM that still has some Blur components in it, then try out Apex 1.4.1 or Rubix 2.0 Blurry. Both are very responsive and have some of the blur that certain people out there are looking for. Last but not least, it seems a great majority of people like Liberty 1.5. I used the ROM for quite some time, and it is very responsive, but a lot of people seem to have issues with lag or reboots. I never had this issue, so I can't quite speak to that issue...
ROM's are really more of a matter of personal choice. Try out a few and see what you like.
As far as a comparison to the EVO... my roommate has one, and 2 of my other best friends have one. I have done MULTIPLE benchmarking tools on their phones to compare against my X (on multiple ROMs). None of their tests have beat mine... In my opinion, the only differences between the EVO and the X is this:
1) Evo has unlocked Bootloader to allow custom kernels so you can run ROMS like CynanogenMod (but given time, CVPCS is compiling CM for the X)
2) Evo has front facing camera for those who can't wait to talk to people via a webcam.
3) Evo has a slightly quicker GPU (graphics processing unit) than the X, but winds up limited to 30FPS for the most part. Some of the benchmarks I have seen on the X jump it up to 62FPS on tests I have run.
4) Evo runs sense from HTC. If you want a "Sense" feel... some have made themes that look just like Sense....but you said you don't want a theme.
That's about it...

The sticky is EPIC...honestly, it's just data and info. I guess I am looking more for opinions. Thank you for the insight.
I had an EVO and that thing had not once, ever, locked up or froze. 2nd day on my Droid X after a hard reset and it is SO laggy.
Unlock screen even lags to get to home. IDK.... I def don't want the "blurware", but the benchmarks on this phone are impressive. It's response and use have not been, in my opinion.
My wife has the Samsung Vibrant and the specs are amazing for that phone too, but NEVER have I seen a phone lock up and freeze so much. She gave her old G1 to my mom and it's like they run at about the same speed.
I'm real tech savy, a huge phone nerd, etc....I just really didn't like my iPhone. I use Apple products for everything else as I am an audio engineer by profession, but the iPhone was SO limited. I had to hack the crap out of it to get basic things that are available on freebie candybar phones.
One thing I have noticed is that it seems to build my photo cache REALLY slow. Now... I have 14 GBs of photo/video on their, but everytime I open a gallery it takes forever to load. It is getting better about this, slowly but surely....do you think my unit is defective, I am expecting too much, or the more I play with it and let it buld a good cache, etc, it will run better?
Thanks for responding, and THANK YOU for the sticky... If I decide to root that thing will be a lifesaver!

I think the type of sdcard you have also makes a difference. If you have a new class 6 card instead of what the phone comes with (I think it is like class 2 or 3) then the read/write speed should be a lot better. I have been using the latest Rubix ROM for about 2 weeks now, and I don't experience any lag or reboots/freezing. I really like this ROM, and actually talk to Drod2169 (the developer) a decent amount. I would take a look at Rubix or Fission 2.5.7 as these are both blur-free ROM's.
I am also a huge tech nerd/geek. I have tweaked the crap out of my X. I have probably tried every ROM/theme there is for this thing, and right now I'm sitting solid on Rubix. I also used Darkslide 4.2 Blurless for a while. It is a ROM built by BBCrackman and some others over at mydroidworld. I would suggest trying Darkslide out. It is pre-themed by the makers of the ROM but I think it has been the most reliable and snappy ROM I have used besides Rubix 2.0.
If you have questions, shoot them at me in here, or hit me up on gchat.

Thanks a million for the cool info and not just a "NOOB RTFM!" response!
I will check out both!
A little history: 4 years ago i bought and owned (still own) a G1 - HTC Dream - and ever since custom Android roms were available I have been very happy to try out the latest and greatest. I think jesusfreke being the first but cant remember now its such a long time ago. Then along came cyanogen with hhis rom, brilliant. There were so many new options and the speed increase was great. and because of this rom I kept my G1 for over 3 years as my main phone. When the time came that cyanogen stopped supporting the G1 I decided it was time for an upgrade and decided I would get the Atrix based on its powerful specs and all of the other amazing features it has.
So 8 months on I now have an Atrix on which I have tried nearly all available roms and am currently running the latest version of Aura. (not an endorsement for Aura, simply a statement). Included in my trials was CM7, which i was so excited about when i first heard that development was happening. However since installing CM7 and trying it out for around a month I have to say that amongst all of the other roms for the Atrix it is not the holy grail that it has been on other phones. In fact in its current incarnation its relevance it questionable on the Atrix particularly when reading that the devs are struggling to find solutions to getting some of the features working.
I know that there are many people that bought the Atrix because it was powerful. But, it does have other features that, although not unique are certainly what helps to give the Atrix an edge over the competition. Webtop for example is a feature that used only ocassionally is a valuable asset to the device and simply discard it at for a tweak that boosts performance by mere micro seconds is a poor trade. it would be the same as buying a convertible ferrari and removing the button that puts the roof down - it saved some weight and the car can now accelerate to 60mph marginally faster but you cant put the roof down anymore. So you might as well have bought a hard top ferrari which already went faster. The same theory as buying the Atrix, if you want that extra bit of speed, might as well buy the SGSII.
So, there it is. Thats why i run a different rom at the moment, because all of the features are available and quite honestly with a bit of tweaking i can no longer either see of feel any difference in speed to CM7 and my battery lasts a perfectly acceptable amount of time for a smartphone (Depending on my usage). For those of you who might start mentioning blur as being the reason to move to CM7 that is another area where devs of other custom roms have done a fine job of removing anything really noticable and anything else that I found annoying I simply used TB and personal preference to sort out. (Although i havent yet figured out the accounts manager and anyway of getting rid of that awful blur interface. Maybe one day)
In conclusion, no ROM is perfect and as much as I admire the devs work I simply don't think that CM7 is relevant on the Atrix.
Thoughts?
i think it greatly depends on what your needs/desires are for your phone. i bought my atrix with zero intentions of using the fingerprint scanner or webtop. in the months before CM7 came out, i never even tried them out on stock or custom ROMs.
i really enjoy the extra features that CM7 adds to my atrix (however small they may be). the only downside ive experienced is inconsistent battery behavior, but i cant narrow it down so im not even sure its a cyanogen thing.
any ROM is relevant if there are people who want to use it. it may not be relevant for you, or anyone who is set on webtop/FPS. but to each his own. thats the beauty of open-source right??
It's to each their own, I guess. If someone wants CM7 on their phone, they're going to go for it. Some people are benchmark fiends, others just like the feel of it.
Completely agreed with fischwrap. Many people bought the Atrix because it was the fastest phone at release date, or the best price/performance ratio one. That people might or might not care about the fingerprint scanner (a lot of people in fact don't like the power button placement and use volume to wake, some others don't even use a lockscreen, let alone a fingerprint scanner) or about webtop (believe it or not people without HDTVs or LCDs exist )
And I know the 'don't care or need' side has at least 5300 people on it

Same here. I also purchased it with eager anticipation that devs would also get it for the same reasons and port CM7. You guys kick major ass. Took a bit more blood, sweat and tears because of the bootloader but our Atrix's are rockin' now!f
i think the Atrix can truly shine regardless of what ROM you use. it's an extremely powerful phone and that will show in any comparison. The kernel plays a very large part in determining performance as well though. Even if you are on standard clock speeds with one of faux's kernels you'll have amazing benchmarks and real world results, and even more so if you choose to overclock. CM7 is a great ROM for every phone, and i don't believe it's relevance to the atrix should be in question, but merely its relevance to you. i've been an android guy for quite a while dating back to the G1 days as well (Do you remember the ROM bible? we need one of those for the Atrix! ) and i shed a silent tear when those forums got moved to the legacy and low activity sections. but this is much like when Sense ROMs started appearing for the G1. Bluetooth and Camera commonly didn't work on them, and some people said they wouldn't use Sense until those were fixed. FP Scanner and Webtop are tenfold less essential than either of those, yet some won't use CM7 until those are fixed. it really just comes down to what you look for in a phone and what you use the most.
I don't use webtop (although no fingerprint took me a long long time to get over), as such CM7 offers some features such as notification power management, being able to adjust lowest screen brightness, having control over when the phone vibrates, etc. THe extensive control CM7 allows you that other Motoblur based roms does not alone is really worth it for me. I can see your point but it's rather ridiculous to suggest CM7 is not relevant. It is still by far the best rom on Atrix at the moment if you're able to live w/o webtop/fingerprint scanner.

i think the Atrix can truly shine regardless of what ROM you use. it's an extremely powerful phone and that will show in any comparison.

Legacy devices, yeah that's where my beloved tilt(Kaiser) got moved to. I love Android but I do miss the kaiser days I remember running android from the sd card on the kaiser lol. At first touch screen was not working, no camera, no bluetooth, no wifi, and by the time I left the kaiser they had that stuff working.

I disagree. A rom may have those 2 features but run like a G1 while another can be missing those 2 features and run smooth as butter. It is dependent on taste but I'd pick the latter.
The thing that sets the Atrix apart was the FP and the webtop. I don't use either, and I use cm7.
But without those 2 features enabled, it just another phone. Fast phone tthough. But not the best rom, IMO.
Homebase is the best rom for THIS phone. Smooth as butter and full functionality of the phone. I love CyanogenMod, its fast as hell, very stable. But it does the same stuff my little Aria does.
I'm tired, don't know if this makes sense to anyone else.

Thoughts?

I agree that CM7 is not the perfect rom and sacrifices are required. However, using Blurr-based roms you're also sacrificing the functionality of CM7. And judging from the number of people flashing CM7, at significant part of the community prefers the CM7 functionality over fingerprint and webtop.
I feel this both suggests there is a big part for CM7 and it should be in the conversation of one of the best roms. Hopefully one day Blur-based roms will integrate CM7's customizability (unlikely) or CM7 will get a working fpscanner and webtop.
I think CM is more than relevant for the Atrix!
I have bought the Atrix with the lapdock and I have tested Motoblur as well as Aura and have used the lapdock. Before I have used a htc Hero with CM for nearly 2 years.
I really like the possibility of the lapdock in connection with a kind of webtop or similar functionality. But due to my long experience with CM on my Hero, I have tried CM-7.1 despite the fact that I do not have webtop or at least hdmi-mirroring in a sufficient screen-resolution, because I have missed the score of customization of CM.
And I am absolutely satisfied with CM. At least for my personal usage, it IS the best available ROM. It is faster and smother than the other, have many more convenient settings like configurable screens, buttons and LED-notification. Everything in an efficient way. And CM has an exceptional battery-life, I got roughly 30% more battery time.
OK, I am a little bit missing webtop, but I am hoping hdmi-mirroring will be working soon ;-) I have used the FP on Aura, but I really do not miss it, because I was used to unlock with menu-button with my hero, so I stick to that, because it is faster than FP.
If I could acquire a cheap Lapdock I would, I really want to use this phone to it's full potential.

I don't think the CM7 mod can really be considered stable.
I have a good amount of trouble with lag, slow internet, fc's, and obviously the features that don't work.
Hopefully in time they can improve it more.
I've tried many roms on mine and finally decided to settle on stock 2.3.4 U.A.E retail. It is very nicely done.
CM7 is plenty relevant to the Atrix. If it weren't, then there wouldn't be 5,485 people using it (according to CM's official device statistics page*). A lot of people bought this phone for its raw power, and could care less about webtop or the fingerprint scanner. The team doing the port said they want to add that at some point, and the fingerprint scanner at least on some level is working on unreleased builds.
This isnt to mention that once an official (by CM) release is out, CM could provide an excellent base for ROM developers who dont like blur. Blur is fast on the Atrix, but still isnt as fast as vanilla android. Once ICS comes out, we'll definetly get it before blur roms do as well.
At the moment, blur roms have an edge in that they fully support the hardware and have more chances of being bug free. But it wont be long before that all changes.
If you want guaranteed stability, webtop or the fingerprint scanner, use a blur rom. Otherwise, use CM7. If you dont care and just want a phone, use stock. Just because some people prefer one type doesn't invalidate the significance of the other.

When you boot CM for the first time, you're given the option of sending them statistics data. That can be turned off at any time by going Settings > CM Settings > System > Anonymous statistics
Since its opt-in, there are probably more users than that.
For starters, I know, I'm a nub. I've been cautiously playing with ROMs for my Epic since the first SyndicateROM Frozen release and have lurked around /Dev ever since, looking for that just-right ROM.
Over time, I've seen a lot of references to CyanogenMod on the innertubes and I gathered that it was supposed to be what Android should have been but wasn't: an OS that worked the same way on all (supported) devices, without all the manufacturer and carrier bloat lagging the hardware.
I've tried a few nightlies of CM for the Epic and although I like the speed, looks, and configurability, I don't really understand why the Epic is listed as supported when only nightlies are available. Two months in and things like changing the volume during a call mutes it irrevocably, forcing a redial. Overall, I'm left wondering what all the fuss is about.
I recently upgraded another line on my Sprint account with a HTC Evo 4G. Since the Evo 4G has been supported by CM for ages and has stable builds available, I felt this was finally the best opportunity to give CM7 a real try and see what it can do. I happily loaded it up, packed in the user's needful apps, dressed up the UI, only to find that the volume rocker doesn't work properly. CM seemed confused by Media Volume, Ringer Volume, and Call Volume and when it wasn't meddling with the inappropriate volume for the given situation it chose to do nothing at all. The user's primary complaint with his previous phone, a Samsung Moment, was that the GPS had stopped working so imagine my =/ when I found that GPS doesn't lock in CM7 on the Evo. I gave up my half-day's worth of wasted effort and loaded up a Barebones rooted ROM instead, which naturally worked properly while looking like crap.
So back to my title question: is this the best we can expect from CyanogenMod? My sense is that there's a lot of angst built up among Android users, some of whom have declared CM the best version of Android almost in hopes that saying will make it so. Given the proliferation of fanbois, it's hard to get a real sense of what is out there to try.
For myself, I would like a ROM that doesn't surreptitiously track me, wakes up quickly on keyboard-slide, goes all day on a single charge with 2-4 hours of screen time, and all the radios work. 17 months of owning this phone and the first ROM I tried is still probably the best (SRF). CleanGB comes close but for whatever reason the first character I type on the keyboard gets highlighted and then erased by whatever I type next, forcing me to type the first letter twice (this happens when typing with nothing open on-screen and in whatever browser I'm using). The GPS is also terrible with EL30's radio.
Is this just how it is?
I think its that some people don't really care if things work perfectly or not. I personally got so fed up with CM7 that I went to CleanGB. They stopped working on CM7 a while ago and are now fixing up CM9. I'd love to see what CM9 is like, but I'll probably wait until at LEAST the betas begin if not the release candidate.
I think Cyanogenmod represents hope to people who own devices that are no longer supported by the manufacturer. That is why people may overlook a volume rocker not working perfectly. You gotta get Cyanogenmod devs a lot of credit. They do put out a damn good release with regards to what they are given to start with.
By far no... cyanogen is so popular its been recognized by Google amung others. The volume issue is a feature not a bug I don't own an evo but I put cyanogen on one for a friend and he loves it. What version did u use on the rvo I had a HTC glacier and now the sensation. Cm7 on glacier is solid asrock and cm9 on HTC sensation even it its beta stage is good enough for daily use did:u flash most up to date gapps? I honestly can't live without cm and I've tryed other rooms but I always come back to cm and I've rooted probably a dozen peoples phones with it and the response is always the same. "Its just soon much better, faster and easier to use and everything works its what I thought my phone was gonna be" I would recommend a custom kernel to go with cm7 as the included kernel is very basic (no non standard CPU governors etc) look for an overclocked and undeevolted kernel. It will help with battery life (more so with undervolted and ovrrclocked kernel as opposed to just overclocled as the undervolt one changes the voltage steps on the CPU as well as freq so even though your OC'd it still is using the same (or less) amount of power. Also try and get one with the smartass CPU governor as its like having CPU profiles like when screen is off it pilots mhtz to the min freq setting instead of just leaving it "on demand" feel free to pick my brain I want u to feel the joy that comes with using cyanogwn

I don't want to sound mean or rude, but if you have problems with the small stuff then just go stock or the closest build of stability. GPA has always been terrible its Samsung for you. and for screen on times like that your not going to get that with a stock battery and also depends on your usage man.

No offense taken. The differential in expectations seems to be that no one bothers to mention the "small stuff", like GPS or buttons not working while they go on endlessly about how much faster the CPU will do, well, almost nothing worthwhile.
Also, the GPS not working was on the HTC using CM7--it seems to be merely flaky with the Epic in CM7. For nightly 45, anyways. I also get that much life out of my 1500mAh OEM battery (17 months old), even with CM7 although it does seem to be eating about 15% more per day than CleanGB (JuiceDefender's Balanced profile in both cases). I mentioned it only so that my expectations were clearer for anyone caring to compare.

I know you have other reasons for not going to CM9 and I completely respect that, however this is a common misconception, and seems to be a very good reason why people don't flash CM9.
CM9...as a whole, is alpha. That is because there are features, a theme manager, and some improvements to be added. Ice Cream Sandwich as CM9 however...performs like a beta, if not a release candidate. Think of it has a slightly tweaked ICS rom for the time being. It performs as good as stock ICS would on the galaxy nexus though.
There are very, very small bugs in CM9 that will affect everyday use, and sometimes that's enough for people not to want to flash it. But again (and this isn't just directed at you, I see this too often), look past the word alpha.
Here's the only minor bugs that have ever bothered me in the slightest:
Video artifacts when playing LQ videos (Not a big deal because I prefer HQ, and that works perfectly)
Some pictures in the gallery are jumbled when clicking on one. The fix? Just download quickpic.
That's it. Other than that, it performs better than any android OS version I've ever been on in my life.
Just tellin ya =)

Nightlies are upstream changes to CM7 as a whole. Just because you don't see a "stable" version does not mean any nightly isn't stable. They all are. The CM team is just constantly improving their ROM as a whole. Half the things they "fix" are rarely relevant to one's everyday use, and they're just changes to make essentially the "perfect" ROM. CM7 is as stable as any EL30 ROM out there I guarantee, and it's much faster and customizable.
CM7 and now on CM9 I've never had in volume rocker issues or gps issues. I'm loving Cyanogen Mod makes my phone like a brand new phone. But I guess every phone is different.

Cyanogen had to move across the country to work for samsung. Most devs that get taken over to a big company can't release roms anymore. The misconception is that it isn't done yet. They'll give it to us at just the right time. Sxsw should help.

CM is a community rom. Only a small part is actually made by Cyanogen. Basically, they put up an AOSP version of the latest android then let people submit changes. Anyone can submit a change and it will be either approved or denied by team douche (cm team).

I understand that the overall CM9 isn't official yet, so we cannot have anything other than an alpha at this point. That said, I have read a lot about it and there are still major things that stand out to me that make me not want to flash it. Also, like in CM7, 99% of the people overlook things when discussing the rom that I consider a deal killer. I'm gonna wait until its pretty stable and then flash so that I can give it a fair comparison to CleanGB.

I agree that SRF 1.2 was the best rom I've ever used with the epic, but as far as gingerbread roms I like CM7 the best. I don't know why you have the volume problem, but I can't reproduce it on my phone (pressing volume during a call does nothing except adjust call volume for me as it should) which is running the same nightly as you. I don't think I can name a single bug on it actually, or at least none of them have affected me yet. Except the random LED behavior i guess?
All this plus the huge amount of features and theme changer makes cm7 the best in my book. I have also had absolutely 0 issues with stability, too. (no FCs, reboots, hangs)
edit: volume rocker changes media when i'm playing music/etc, ringer in general, and call volume during calls. gps locks very fast. I'm not a fanboy, i switch roms very frequently and only recently settled on cm7. i really cannot reproduce a single one of the bugs you mentioned, or any instability in general.

It is a nice rom and could be used as a very nice daily driver. The op has some concerns about it and it sounds like he wanted to know what all the hype was about. So yes CM9 is an awesome rom and has the potential imo to be even better
than it is. If you love the core TW elements than CM9 probably is not the best choice for you.

She was vary happy when I flashed it on her phone ;-);-) I didn't even tell her heheheh she just woke up 2 a phone that didn't lock up every day )
BTW Kenny I totoaly get ur point. But there's no reason to come in the thread & be a fan boy(other ppl NOT u kenny). But on the other hand you can't go any where on the net with out fanboys jumping on u if u like a subaru over an Evo, a 360 over a ps3. I love cm I instll it on all kinds of phones. I also DO NOT HATE TOUCHWIZ one thing that I love about touchwiz is the swipe left to txt right to call. I didn't even know that was a tw thing untill I instlled cm7 on a friends phone (b4 we had it) I thought it was a froyo thingy.
The cm team does a grate job but there roms are like the be all end all god of epic roms & evey time we start to Discuss the subject some fanboys comm in and ruins it all Screaming blasphemy blasphemy blasphemy reminds me of the Muslims *****ing about cartoons. Its like if u DON'T LOVE CM u suck arond hear.
I'm just disapointed that cm7 died idk if ics is ever going to work any better than win7 does on my sony vaio that came with vista, only time will tell.

So if I'm reading the fanbois right, the bugs are just how CyanogenMod is. Okay then, I don't have a problem with that. I happen to think that the buttons and GPS on my phone (or others) are must-have features and not minor bugs. I certainly have no affection for TouchWiz or Sense else why would I be bothering to try ROMs, especially now that CiQ has been removed from EL30 (thank you very much, k0nane!).
For comparison, I also mess about in the router modding world, with third-party firmware like DD-WRT and OpenWRT. The finished products there, when they say they work, they tend to mean all of the buttons. With CM7, it looks like finished (meaning the Evo) means features are missing and my question was simply is that also what it will also be like when the Epic is finished. The answer appears to be yes.
Edit: I doublechecked the call mute thing and it does happen with my phone on nightly 45 of CM7. Adjusting the volume down once reduces the volume to nearly inaudible levels and pressing up on the rocker does nothing. I first noticed the bug when in handsfree on a robocall; when I tried to turn down the handsfree volume, one press effectively muted the call and taking the call out of speakerphone mode did nothing.
Well said Kenny at least you have the class to come on here and not be a fanboy. You give us your point in a straightforward but non condescending tone. I myself think CM9 is awesome but there are just some things that are deal breakers for me. So maybe in the future I will give CM9 a go again.

I installed the Team Eos 4 ROM with Android 4.2, after finally admitting that Asus has ceased updating the TF101. I can only say everybody should do the same:
It's easy. Took me less than 30 minutes, with these instructions: http://www.transformerforums.com/fo...nt/31927-frederucos-guide-root-rom-tf101.html
The device became (and I'm not overstating it) really lightning fast. Videos play better, everything happens at once. Somehow Android now looks better also.
The browser looks the same but feels totally different. It responds immediately and pages load pretty much as fast as with a desktop browser. Write in an address and the page is there. No more "The browser is not responding / wait or close" dialogs.
It's actually very stable and everything works. Nothing has crashed for me since installing, not even the browser, which is really something. The browser used to crash once or twice each time I used it.
You can install Adblock Plus (the Eos ROM comes rooted) and Avast with firewall
User control. A device can now have several user profiles. No more need to share your private issues with other members of the household.
The TF101 feels like a new device again suddenly
(Ps. Asus stopped updating TF101 after 1,5 years on the market, as they've agreed with Google. This is not very good customer service. 18 months is nothing - it feels like "take the money and run". They leave their customers with potential security problems, with outdated software. The older the software is, the more likely it is to be exploited.)
I'm also very satisfied with the Team EOS ROM. For me it's not quite as stable as stock, but it's faster and smoother.
A few notes:
- User profiles are not fully supported by most apps yet. I suggest you stay away for now, at least until we get decent su(do) support.
- Team EOS ROMs, while they put a lot of effort and time in (and I DO appreciate it!) are still non-official ROMs and devs work with what they have, so you can still expect bugs and random issues while they're reported and ironed out. Don't expect a 100% flawless ROM.
- 18 months is the time that Google will provide manufacturers with updates, that does not mean the manufacturer has any obligation to push out the update. If any of you guys saw the post here about the new AiO Transformer, you can see Asus are moving on to bigger and better things. While I'm not that happy myself about no official 4.1+ for this device, I'm pleased to see there's people working hard to make us awesome ROMs to keep up with the new stuff. Also, most other Asus tablets are announced to have the 4.1 update, so it's really just their oldest tablet (launched on March 30th 2011) that isn't getting it.
- You can "double" your "RAM" by adding swap space to your device on your fat32 internal sdcard space using Swapper (I mention it because it's useful to some extent - not real ram - and it's seldom mentioned).
I've mentioned it before... but I suspect that stability/performance issues are tied to the SBK revision you have, and the B/C version.
I look at Asus not supporting updates for the TF101 in this way: This tablet was their test run for what was to become their flagship design in the tablet market. It obviously worked and since then with the later models, the tablet/netbook hybrid idea has really taken off. The 300 and the 700 have bigger and better hardware so its what they are going to focus on. Don't look at the TF101's lack of support form the big guys as being its inevitable demise as much as its chance to shine in the custom rom community. The tablet is almost 2 years old and hasn't been officially supported for a few months now but the development between CyanogenMod and EOS as well as some of the other roms avaiable for this tablet makes it really stand. Its graduating into a fully supported developer gold mine instead of going to the grave.
EOS 4 is the rom I'm currently running and its a powerhouse even with some of the bugs that are being worked out. Its definitely proof that this device still has some miles left in it.
TL;DR: I totally agree. If you want a world changing experiences on your TF101, then check out EOS!
The ROM is not quite as perfect as I first thought. It has problems with speaker volume - it's not possible to set it loud enough to make it hearable from some apps. (And yes, I know about the volume boost apps, which don't seem to help, tried several from Play).

It also works better with the K.A.T. Kernel
I love JB. But its not stable enough as they don't have official sources.
I prefer ICS and nice kernel. OC, update, Build my own Rom, add what I want, call it a day.
Truthfully tho, I only use the thing for games, Emails, Reading, and Internet. Its fine for those things. I am selling it tho cause I want an N7. But the only reason is to match my phone. A Tablet is a tablet to me.
To be honest I haven't play around with any custom ROMs for several months. What really turned me off was the lack of a file explorer which I guess is the fault of Google not including anything in the source. I really happen to to like the Asus file explorer & haven't found another one that I like. That is my main reason for not. Maybe I'll give JB another shot.

Try ES File explorer, it's not eye candy like Asus' but it has much broader support, like built-it LAN and FTP capabilities. You can just browse to your network share, and start your movie/music/whatever from there without having to copy it, etc... it's pretty cool.
Other Asus apps have been modified to work in other roms. I use their deskclock, email, weather and task manager apps on Team EOS' 4.2.1. Task manager won't actually kill any apps but it still displays them fine. There's also their dayscene wallpaper, etc... search and browse through this forum in the apps section, you'll see lots of people posted modified versions. It almost feels like stock with all those mods.
I can vouch for ES. It doesn't look pretty but it's insanely powerful for a file browser. You can access networked computer, directly access all your cloud storage and also access root if you are rooted. The only thing I would like to see them do is give you the option of dragging and dropping from one directory to another.
I also use a fair share of the Asus stock widgets and such. I noticed that wit hthe task manager, I get random FCs with it but it doesn't affect anything at all.

Try Solid Explorer - same functions as ES file explorer but looks nicer - dark and light themes are good and dual pane usage.
I'm currently using EOS Rom, overall its great, but I'm going back to LiquidSmooth (4.1) for the following reasons:
-Performance. LiquidSmooth performance is the reason why I'm keeping this device even though Asus doesn't support it anymore. Performance is beyond my beleif. (Only gripe: random reboot once every 48 hours or less, while sleeping. Still, could be worse)
-Weird EOS nightly 90 bug for me. LCD backlight randomly turns off until next reboot.
On another note: +1 for Solid Explorer. My choice too. I considered AntTek too but in the end I think Solid Explorer fits my needs better. And cheaper!

Awesome! I finally decided to install EOS after reading your post. This old Tf101 feels like a brand new tablet now and iam not exaggerating.
I compare the webpage loading time with iPad 2 and they are compatible! Thanks for the post and the developer team.
I want to recommend everyone to flash.
I am big EOS4 fan now as well. last months with Timduru's work has litteraly change my tabs. even has my ipod luvin kids wanting time on them.
they are stable enough now that i can hand them over to the kids and evrything just works.
my setup i use
latest eos4
latest KAT kernel (this makes the rom run far more smooth and buttery as well as fixes minor glitches for me)
KAT app (Havent really had a need for this other then it can help get sound volume up in some apps for me. only lost sound once and kat app brought it back easily)
APEX launcher (really speeds up and smooths out the desktops and adds load of customisation i like)
cifs manager so my pc server now is like an extra internal memory card built into my tab
Alot of ppl have made a few working roms and they all deserve a heaping load of thanks for thier time and efforts.
no rom is 100% but a few are close enough now to be very usefull and far better off then where asus left us.
Over the Christmas holidays I took the plunge and rooted and flashed my TF101 with RaymanFX CM10 (I think, that's the version, the device isn't with me ATM). Since then I've been impressed with the speed and functionality but I've had a two reoccurring issues, Wifi drops out frequently and no sound after a few hours uptime. Both issues necessitate a reboot to fix.
Anyway... I'd like to try EOS4 with the KAT kernel, it seems to be more actively developed and used.
As I said the device is already rooted and flashed it since it was a PITA to reload all my apps and setup email accounts etc, I'd like to know if installing EOS4+KAT is going to require completely wiping everything again or are there steps I can take to reduce the effort?
Just to confirm, I'd need the flash 3 things from the recovery bootloader to switch: 1. EOS4 zip, 2. KAT kernel, 3. gapps is that correct?

yes do need all 3 as well your recovery needs to be compatible with 4,2,1. you usualy need the latest version of recovery to be able to do that.
I use twrp 2.3.2.3 which is very easy to instal. just get the goomanager of the play store if u want this recovery and it can instal it for u as well and it will tell you when there are updates to your rom etc....
as a general rule I always do full wipes when changing roms. cache, system etc.... as sometmes the file system is different and needs this.
Why I should not flash a custom ROM:
nothing supports the Slider. Sigh.
Emitted from my Nexus Prime
RaymanFx CM10.1 with the latest nightlies uploaded by 'josteink' and kat kernel 94 for CM10.1 works really well. Full android 4.2.2, smooth and fast. Also adding gps.config file seems to get the gps working as well.
I'm still kicking Team EOS3 #81 with KatKernel #69 & KAT App
99.9999999% bug free
Only thing I have to do sometimes is press a button in Kat App to reinitialise the audio after a long deep sleep
Lightning fast and butter smooth and everything works perfectly
Couldn't agree more having the Team EOS 4 custom ROM has been wonderful. Thanks to the team for all the effort and time.
