I'm searching now, but phoneext has been the only thing I found, and I never really liked it since it took over a lot of the functions of the phone.

Works for SMS messages also. The author mentions it can't handle large contact databases. He doesn't give a specific number but it works fine with my contact list 600+ contacts. Also allows you to assign tones by contact category (my main use since this is far easier than individual tones). BTW you should realize that in your contacts edit view you can assign a ringtone to the contact along with their photo.

haha, dang, I didn't realize that was there in the per contact edit.
Thanks!
I used Photo Contacts PRO (Pocket PC Edition) by PocketX Software Inc.
Editing the contacts info seems to be bugged as far as updating phone numbers and other info. At least on my phone. However everything else on it works great. You can select a different ring tone for each contact. Also allows you to set default ringtone for users not in your contact list. Also has a better appointment interface and several other goodies. I highly recommend.
You can do this without the need for third-party apps... right from within your Contacts applet. Just edit the contact and assign a ring tone to him/her from the available drop down.
Since the Contact app that comes with the Vibrant is nothing I want to use. Is there a way to get back one similar to the contact app on the G1 that syncs with just my google contacts?
Umm what's wrong with the default one? It's pretty awesome. If you just want to view google contacts then go to menu and go to display options

^^ you clearly have not utilized contacts correctly. Tons of good stuff in Contacts. Did you check the sticky? I tried to point out a lot of the features and how to make things function better. I would start off by hitting menu > Display Options > and have only your google account sync (and check to only show contacts with phone #s).
In Contacts you can slide the pic left or right to call/text
You can press the letters running down the right side for a quick jump (much better than the old slide).
You can click on the pic for multiple ways to communicate with a contact....
so so so much better. Not sure how you could say your G1 was better, and I have a g1.
This is by far the best contact app that i've seen on any android phone.
I just got my phone today and when I txt someone it shows up as their phone number instead of their contact name. Any idea on how to change it?
^ is the person added as a contact, and is their # stored as a mobile?
Yes to both
I believe OP said the Touchwiz contact app is "nothing I want to use". Why do you all insist on trying to convince this person they are wrong. It's a matter of preference. I happen to agree with OP. In spite of a few nifty enhancements, I much prefer the G1 with it's AUTOMATIC and COMPLETE sync to the web. I don't want to have to go through all the levels of hell to sync Google contacts with phone contacts with SIM contacts just to assign a custom ringtone. So for those of us who prefer the stock Android contacts, either offer some constructive assistance or don't post. If OP had wanted to know why he/she should keep the TW contacts or the benefits of that app, I'm sure the question would have been asked that way.
So...anybody with an answer to the original question?
Agreed on the TW contacts. Really nice features, but the quirks are too aggravating to make it a serious contacts app.
It's indeed a personal preference.

Zas wa posted above its not a matter of all the fancy pizzazz. I just need a basic contact manager that syncs properly and efficiently. The rest is pretty useless for me personally.

The two biggies for me are...
1. Not being able to show groups from Goog contacts. I know about showing only those with phone numbers, but that's a kludge.
2. Not being able to assign custom ring tones unless the contact is stored on phone. On phone storage should be banished from an Android phone IMO.
It's not all bad. I like the linking, the swiping to call or text, and the favorites as grid view. But the 2 quirks are huge for me.
As wonderful as some of the options are in the new contact manager, I am absolutely dumbfounded at the lack of integration. Why does it grab everything, and not just my contacts? Why doesn't it automatically allow individual ringtones? Why can I not create groups from my google contacts that are not linked on the phone?
I use a contact manager to manage my contacts, and the fact that I have to manually do so much to make this thing work makes a poor excuse for a contact manager.
The program should:
1. Import and sync all contacts from all areas completely and efficiently.
2. Allow you to specify any additional syncing you require.
3. Bring in *only* your contacts and not your cached addresses.
4. Automatically give them phone level access and group access regardless of the source. *putting them in a group called google and not allowing me an easy method to move them is pointless*.
Bottom line the contact manager is a fail in my opinion. If someone can point me to how to accomplish the above without having to create a phone contact for every contact I have or hiding ones with out numbers (which only partially works). I will enjoy using the product and apologize.
I wonder happens when you factory reset your device, does it lose your phone contacts? If so that is an even bigger fail because it requires you to recreate them all. The fact that I have to go to a forum to figure this crap out, and possibly use third party software to back it up in case god forbid I need to a factory reset is just stupid in my opinion.

I couldn't say it better. The not being allowed to use custom ring tones for G-Mail contacts is ridiculous.
PS. is their a batch function to transfer all the G-Mail contacts to the phone, or do I have to manually do it one by one?
I have only been able to do it one by one. You make a phone contact with same name and ir autolinks. Bwst I been able to get.

There's an app in the market that does this.
Contacts to SD, or something.

Anyone find a way to enable the old "send directly to voicemail" option on the new contacts? that's bugging me not having that.(sometimes you just don't want to hear from someone.)
Totally agreed on the SEND DIRECTLY TO VM and the fact that I can't sync my Google Contacts Groups on my phone. Serious Fail.
My question is, if I flash to the Cyanogen ROM for the Vibrant, will this functionality come back?

It doesn't work ahead of time, but:
from your Call Log, long-press on the number > Add to reject list
This list is manageable somewhere in Settings, I forget where.

Does that make it so the person can leave a message? or does the reject make the call not go through, thus no voicemail? i ask because i really only use it to screen calls from work, but they have to be able to leave a message or i'll get in trouble.
I just found out that in order to place a personal ringtone on a contact, that contact has to be a "phone" contact instead of a google, facebook, or other type.
Is there a way around this?

Just create a duplicate contact in phone contacts and link them, then assign the ringtone to the phone one. I agree it is a pain though.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Yep, this is my biggest complaint about the Fascinate. It seems I end up having to choose between multiple copies of peoples phone numbers on the contact or no custom ringtones. Can't seem to get some of my contacts to link up nicely and display numbers in the order I want. Hopefully Samsung fixes this soon or someone releases a ROM with better contact management.
I use Ringdroid as a workaround (and to create ringtones, of course). Open up the ringtone you want to assign in Ringdroid, move the slider to the desired length and then click save. It will allow you to assign the ringtone to a contact, including google contacts. Sloppy, but it works.
Thanks for all the help. Creating and linking didn't even cross my mind. I didn't think to use ringdroid because it doesn't work like that on my droid 1. I'll try them both.
I would even go a far to say that bing has something to do with this to cause us not to use google's services..... Just a thought

Thanks! You are right when you say "sloppy, but it works".
Its easier than you think
The solution to this is much easier than you think. You can assign one contact to multiple places. By default contacts are assigned to google, to assign a contact to the phone as well for assigning ringtones you do the following : Step 1: go to contacts, Step 2:Hit menu button, Step:3 hit the icon that says "more", step 4: select Export/Import and Export to SD card. step 5: Once the vfile is created you select Export/Import again except this time you select Import and instead of choosing google to store all of your contacts you choose Phone option. Now you have all the contacts saved both on the phone and the google account. =)

Not strictly true. I've created contacts with nothing but a first name and a ringtone, but because I linked it with a Google contact, it played the ringtone when they called.
It makes sense, and I don't care that much that I have to do this. Google doesn't have a Ringtone field, although perhaps it should. Or they could use a workaround like using the "other information" field to store a path to the file, but then it's only a local path, and it wouldn't work across multiple devices with the same account.
I think they took a rather appropriate compromise, but it does mean more work for those with large numbers of individualized ringtones.

I use ringdroid to assign a contact a ringtone. Much better than export/import, which is IMHO not a solution as I hate frakkin clutter including duplicates, linked or not.

How is this possible on the tab ? I am trying to find out myself for quite some time now and i cant seem to find it.
I am on JM6
Go to file manager open any mp3 file via the default music player, click the menu key, it gives two options share and set as, when you go to set as it gives option to set as video call, voice call, specific user, etc etc.

On mine that doesn't work, as the contact list showing after chosing "set as" is totally empty, thus search don't give any results (despite my samsung app contact list have 200+ entries sync with google contacts).
Is there a way to access the default contact list to ad phone numbers to show there? I wonder why the default contact list and the samsung app one aren't linked...
Just open it fromhe the music player it self dont run the music just from the music library long press then set as or download ring extender from the market
Nope. There is a bug on the tab about this. All my contacts were synchronized/imported from google contacts and facebook. They appear on the contact list. But none of them show on the last selection operation trying to assign a ringtone/mp3 to, search function does not help, empty list.
I added a test contact manually on the phone. This one shows up.
Contacts are not imported each time i boot the GT, but they are not stored on the phone list.
Am i missing something? Any way copying all contacts to phone?
I may try the app you mentioned to see if it works.

App didnt work.
Found that on the contact list you can modify a contact entered manually and set a ringtone direcly there.
But on sync contacts (all of mine...) when i tap "modify" i get a "impossible to modify
SNS contacts on this phone"
annoying as i use a bt headset and different ringtones would have helped me to guess whos calling before picking up without taking the phone out.

Can't even add ppl to groups...
Course, the preferred way this /should/ work is you set the mp3 YOU want as your theme tune, then when you call people, they hear your theme tune playing.
One of the voip apps should enable this! (with an option to turn it off of course when it's abused!).
solved
OK, just to let you know that after several attempts I finally found two solutions on my own.
First one consists in a light app, meant to "cut" quite precisely mp3 wavefiles located on your device to produce rigngtones: its name is "Ringdroid" from Ringdroifd team. The second one is the well known "Zedge", a pick & share ringtones app. Both allow setting a ringtone to every contact, even if it's a synchronized one thus not showing in the default phone adress book when trying to assign through basic music apps.
I tried and it worked.
These two apps are the only ones I fond working in purpose at the moment.
Shame this wasn't on stock feature.

Hello,
I used to join my contacts (facebook, linkedin, google plus, google) to one. After the join and when I an into the contact details If I pressed the "three dots" settings button I could see an option "mark as default". This option give me the opportunity to select the default name, photo, number of the contact... So for example I could use the photo from facebook, the name from google...
After updating to lollipop Poland SM-N910C I do not see this option anymore. Did samsung remove it ? Or is it just the specific CSC that disables this function?
Could anyone else see if this "Marked as default" exists into their phone....after lollipop update??
Thanks in advance
Hello,
I cannot really say anything about Note 4, but the same thing happened on my S4+ when I updated to Lollipop. The "mark as default" option is gone and I've yet to figure out how to actually do that.
I know this is not really helping with this problem at all, but at least others will now know that it's not something that has happened to just them.
Hi there,
the feature is stull there.
let say you have more than 2 numbers for one of your contact.
you have to long press on one of the number, then a pop-menu will appear, click the "set as default" if you wanr to make it a default number.
hopefully the above helps.
regards,
morisa

I think it is lollipop restriction... I do not know why.. It was a good feature!
This feature is also now missing on my Galaxy S5, after the Lollipop update.
I also really preferred this feature, being able to select which photo to use. There appears to be a heirarchy list, to which the Contact list will populate the photo, and it is as follows:
Self taken picture > LinkedIn > Google+ > Facebook
So, if the contact is being forced into an image I do not prefer, the only work-around that I have able to come up with is unlinking the connection with the contact. So, if said contact doesn't have a LinkedIn photo associated with their account, I have do disassociate it with the contact, lest be forced to see I grey blank picture icon.
Very annoying...wish they would fix this.
This feature is still there, but buggy.
Hello, I found this feature! But it looks like the update to Android 5.0.1 made it buggy.
I upgraded my AT&T S4 to 5.0.1 and the "Mark as Default" option went away but after trial and error I noticed it only went away for contacts that I had linked to a Facebook entry. If I un-linked a Facebook entry from a contact, the menu item came back. I could use it to set the defaults. Then I re-linked the Facebook entry and the defaults were preserved.
The looks like a bug to me but I'm not sure on what level it was changed (Samsung/Google/AT&T)
-Mike
I found some kind of workaround, but it's very empirical:
- Go to the details of a contact you want to change the default name or picture of, and click on the link icon. You will be redirected to the list of linked contact for the person
- From there, just unlink the contacts who don't have the right name and picture, one by one, all except the one who has the name and picture you want to keep.
- Then, add back all the linked contacts again, one by one. The contact name and picture shouldn't change from the previous step.
It did work for me. The only issue I see is that you might not be able to mix the name of linked contact #1 with picture of contact #2 for example.
Found a work around
While in the edit menu of the contact simply click on each linked profile tab(ie facebook, google, linkedin) and hit the photo then remove photo for all the ones you dont want and it will go to the only available photo.
Work around solution

Go to the contact and hit edit. Add another phone number (you can make it 999-999-9999). Hit save. The phone should recognize this as a conflict and ask you "Mark as default - This contact has more than 1 phone number /email address. Select default?" Click OK. It should take you to a screen where you can then select the default Caller ID photo (facebook, google, linkedin, etc.) and other defaults (phone, email, etc.).
It's a hassle, but it works for me.
Nice one peep's, now at least we got back some control from this chaos of the Lollipop upgrade to 5.0.1.
Either unlink all, choose the one we want as default, then re-link. Or... un-link all, remove the other pictures or Names etc we don't want from the other accounts, then re-link keeping the default one we want as default.
---------- Post added at 05:40 AM ---------- Previous post was at 05:38 AM ----------
This is a good work-around but they made our life harder by taking a simple good thing away. Unless of course it's a bug that should be fixed in Lollipop 5.1.
If you long hold the item that is currently set as default, you can choose to remove the default status. Then long hold the item that you want, and choose to mark it as default.
