Hi
This is prob'ly my last question before I deside to go for this device.
There are some unofficial firmware-updates with different three-letter-namings talked about in here, supposed to improve stuff.
Since they are unofficial...
- Will they in any way ruin the warranty? (root etc)
- Will they ruin the localization? (keyboard-layout, language...)
- other things I should know about?
If not, i guess the smart thing to do is to flash the device right after unboxing.
With most things "depends".
As long as the phone isn't bricked, I doubt your average shop assistant will refuse a return. The manufacturer warranty may be invalidated if there are obvious mods that makes him check the firmware.
Localisation can be ruined I think, if you install a Asia ROM on a European phone, and vice versa.
JG5 - DO IT! I finally got around to it - whilst it's not perfect - it's definitely a big improvement over my factory shipped JF3. There's a big FAQ, read it, comprehend it, it's difficult to go wrong (I used the 512 .pit file and did repartition).
Beware you lose the official fingerprint of the device so some protected apps don't show up in the Market. However many people (myself included) have successfully applied the Droid Eris Market Fix (search for "Market Fix" in the market once on JG5) and the apps come back after clearing cache and waiting an hour or two.
I also took the precaution of rooting JF3, using TitaniumBackup to backup my apps to apk files, then I knew I could restore them back to JG5 (even if they didn't show up in the Market). Of course, if they don't show up in the Market you also cannot get updates from the Market of your backed-up apps.
HTH
Thanks for the heads up on the JG5. Still couldn't make my self to do it with rumours of froyo updates in less than a couple of months.
it doesn't hurt upgrading to JG5 now, and then upgrade again to Froyo.
2 months is a loooooooooooong time to wait

This update may be released in stages; if you do not see the update on your phone immediately, please be patient.
From
Sprint Forums
Some are not seeing it available to download yet. I just tried and see it but 1st attempt it was corrupted, LOL.
2nd was successful and it is currently verifying package
It just keeps getting corrupt, good'ol sprint for ya!
Currently tried downloading it 30 times via network corrupt each time
Tried via wifi and it does not see a update
wish they would allow it other than OTA
Will it break root?
And i'm guessing it will remove any dialer modifications flashed such as no haptic feedback
can't the damn thing to download with out being corrupt. So only time will tell.
If and finally when I get it installed I will let you know about the root question.
man i hope this fixes my bluetooth pairing issues with 2.1...
hopefully if it breaks root someone can strip on that part and just post the rest of it like the one time before.
I've grown very skeptical toward any "update" from Sprint/HTC/SenseUI.
I've given up on the SenseUI platform and believe that the Hero is simply just too underpowered to run Sense effectively. I hated all the lagging and long pauses.
Now, however, running CM6 with the 9/7 nightly and Darc's #14 kernel and I couldn't be happier. My phone zips along quite nicely.
The ONLY thing I miss about SenseUI is the browser. Anybody know of a decent replacement that can do pinch/zoom as well?

I think I might know why your downloads are classified as corrupt.
If you used this root method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572 towards the bottom there is a section called
"DISABLE OTA UPDATES!!!!"

After doing this, the OTA updates WILL still download, BUT they will not pass signature checks to flash because of the code you just entered.

i bought a used hero from craigslist on Sunday and it had android 1.5 so I hit htc.com and downloaded this update then and flashed it over. I guess there is no root for this version then. I have an evo rooted to 2.2, the hero is for my kid with hopes of using 2.0.5 pre7 wifi router for him to link his laptop to. Haven't turned phone on for sprint yet working way to much. (called sprint before i paid for it esn is clean)
It says....

You may not yet have the update for a couple of reasons:
- The software update may not yet be loaded to the servers
- The software update may be released in batches or stages where not all phones will receive it at the same time.
If you are not seeing the update, please be patient and it should be available soon.
Not able to see the update. It says my phone is upto date (even it is not). I understand the updates might not be there for me yet.
I have rooted my phone and removed some sprint bloatware and htc bloatware.
I have not put any custom rom in my phone yet.
I am a little bit nervous to update my phone. Cause I dont know what the update is all about.

The update is making its way through...I've been checking for it for the last two days...however today 9/24....I checked for the update and this morning at 6:15am the update was available.
The update fixes:
Slow response Phone Dialer
GPS Reboot (<-- I have never experienced this problem)
After the download of the update is complete the installation takes about 5-8 minutes or so...once the phone reboots and after you've agreed to install the update...the phone hangs for a bit on the Sprint Now splash screen....I was a little worried at first but I just let it sit....the phone will continue to boot after 2-3 minutes then you will see the HTC white splash screen for another minute or two and finally it will indicate the update was successfully updated.
I was aware of the slow response with the phone dialer and after the update you notice a difference...however I never had a GPS Reboot issue..but still happy they fixed what ever issue they found.
This may just be me...but after the update my phone seems a bit more responsive over all. But again...this could be just me.
Totally agree, finally pulled the CM6 trigger this week as my phone was at risk of being flung on several occasions. Can't believe I ever waited around for Sprint to fix anything, CM flies (but does not get flung!)
I'm still debating about CM6...I brought my HTC hero back in March-April due to my old phone dying....unfortunately the HTC EVO was still about 2-3 months away so I really had no choice...it was either the Hero or the Moment...I chose the Hero since it was a better phone in my opinion.
I am however upset that Sprint has given up on this phone so quickly...I'm still a little hesitant of rooting my phone and voiding my warranty. I've started to read up on rooting and CM6 a little bit as I am a bit curious of CM6.
Am I right to say that if I don't like CM6 I can revert back to stock rom and Sprint will not being able to tell...just in case I have to take my phone back at any point in time?
Also I've heard of Unrevoked and the fact that you can root you phone by just using this app....I've seen some threads that look extensive at how to root your phone...so if this "one-click" app works...can this be applied to the overall process of getting CM6 installed?
While I don't mind using Sprint Navigation or UI Sense....that is really the only apps I would like to be able to use....all other sprint apps..such as Sprint Football and Nascar I don't care about....If I get CM6 installed can Sprint Navigation be reinstalled?
Now that sprint pushed out a new update out there...will procedures have to change to install CM6 or rooting due to this new update??
I guess just a few questions..like I said..I'm curious about CM6 but have yet to decide if I really want to get CM6 installed...any feedback would be great.
Thanks!!!
I down loaded the update but it won't install, my phone is rooted with the one click app so that might be why it won't install

I'm curious because I'd like to flash mine, but don't think we can go back to our build (P1000MUGJJ7, wtf i know).
Bell Galaxy Tab.
I recall reading of a couple successes in the Galaxy Tab General forum.
This thread I believe: (page 13 rgbc reports success)

No going back to stock, as far as I have read, but things move quick here

As far as I know at this point there are no Bell roms floating around but if you feel comfortable flashing, read the first few pages of the ATT flash thread, get comfortable with Odin, it was a bit of a different flashing experience for me coming from HTC phones, give it a day or two to make sure everything is fine with the hardware (I took my first tab back to Futureshop for exchange 24 hours later as it had/developed a burnt pixel right in the middle of the screen) and then flash away.
The Bell rom doesn't really offer anything that the Euro rom doesn't, whereas the Euro rom enables the phone features on your Tab, the speakerphone is excellent btw.
Quick question re your unmodified Tab, when you launch Swype does it have a Voice button on the keyboard, I cannot remember if it did or if I'm confusing it with the Swype kb on my Nexus, which does.
Thanks. I wanted to flash so I can get the arabic words to show properly, hoping we'd get an official firmware first. I bought mine from Bell.
In regards to Swype, there is a Voice/Mic button, but for some reason it's greyed out now, can't use it. Even though voice search works perfectly everywhere else.
What bell apps would you like to keep?
I see no reason to keep bell apps on the tab anyway - I have no PVR
So why would you want to flash it back?
Self Serve app is pretty cool app, but I think it downloaded the APK heh, but the reason is i'm just worried in case I need a working ROM to fallback to.
Care to point me to that Bell Self Serve APK? I flashed mine to Euro before I even tried that application.
Some version of the Bell firmware will show up on samfirmwares.com before long, once it gets out to the service centers which are usually their source for firmware binaries.
For instance, it was about ten days after the Bell Vibrant launched before any factory firmware showed up (and it was older, pre-release firmware), but the original "JG9" found on Bell units at launch day has never showed up (current JH2 is there though).
You can always fall back to the AT&T firmware, which is available just to get you up and running pretty close to stock again, but of course that might cause problems if you want to reflash it before sending it in for warranty.
Something else to keep in mind (but try not to abuse please) is the 30 day DOA period from Bell kind of covers your ass if you totally screw something up and brick it for real. Provided they have a replacement in stock.
Thanks for the info Croak. That was pretty helpful.
About the Self Serve app, I realized there was a link initially that took me to the market to download the app, http://www.appbrain.com/app/bell-self-serve/com.bellmo.selfserve, I'm not sure if this shows up for you. I'm still dabbling in adb, so I'm not sure how to get the apk off the device just yet :/
Note: The self serve app only works on 3G, not wifi. That would explain how it knows to my account info automatically.
I forgot ask something, in regards to the Market, will regional apps still show after flashing non-north american firmware? For example, the TD Canada Trust bank app. I remember I had issues with the MIUI on my N1 because it was a Chinese ROM. Eventually it was fixed though.

Hi xoltrix2000.
I also have the Bell SGT, but have no phone option what so ever :-(. Have the hardware appearently, but no way of using it. Are you able to use the phone option on your SGT? If so, how did you manage to get it?
Thanks for any info.
Since then I flashed the P1000JPJJ2 arabic firmware with no issues so far. It has the phone capabilities obviously just like any of the euro firmwares, tested it by using another phone line enabled sim card.
Thanks for your reply xoltrix2000. Good to know that it actually works. I'll have to read up a bit on the 'how to', get all the needed software and then try it myself.
I currently have a SGT with a custom JM6 and a modem which gives my full data and voice call capability. I posted instructions on this in the general area.

I've been checking for updates on my GT-I9505 and so far I've gotten that everything is up to date already and now all of a sudden I got the following message: Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available.
The most weird and infuriating is that I have purposely kept my S4 completely stock, no root, no nothing. All I've done is that I've installed a few alternative launchers.
As far as I've understood - I can use triangleaway to get back to official (I'm on baseband I9505XXUDMH6). But seriously, what's the point of that status anyway, if I don't root or flash and it still gets effed up???
Anyone seen or heard of something like this before??
What should I do, any suggestions?
At the moment I'm planning to go to the local (tech) store, where I bought this in August (or maybe end of July) and going to have a little chat, if they tell me, that it's my fault and that I must have done something, then Samsung Estonia, here I come....and if things go really south then I'm going to the Consumer Protection Agency (hope it has an understandable meaning....don't know the international equivalent), so far in Estonia they've managed to do something if things are really wrong and hurt the consumer.
I also realize that I'm furious at the moment, but I'm also really serious....worked my butt off to buy this phone and shown great restraint not to flash or root and something like this happens....
Let this be (warning sounds too harsh) note to all not rooted and trying to keep their warranty and if anyone can share some insight, suggestions, sympathy or whatever - thank you!
It's been over two weeks now.
I've been in contact with my retailer, they only recommended a factory reset and the clerk admitted that he's not too familiar with the subject.
Samsung Estonia takes a bit too long with each of their replies (as they're probably too busy with marketing all the time), but they have more helpful replies than the retailer - told me to go to a service center in Tallinn. They were able to be more helpful with other issues that I had raised.
I also read from their site, that the 4.3 update is live in Estonia since October 31st, so I wanted to try if Kies would update my device although the device status isn't official - it only showed that my device is up to date. I was just bored and decided to try OTA as well - surprisingly it didn't say that it wasn't able to update, because the device isn't official, but it said that my device is already up to date.
I rushed through the settings to check it out and now, totally out of the blue, my device is once again official.
Whoever might wonder upon this story in the future with a similar problem, I'm sorry that I couldn't help you and can only wish you patience, good luck and hope that things will turn out better in the end as they did for me (for the moment at least)
A new development:
After the device status turned official again, I found out that the 4.3 update should be live in the Baltic region since October 31. But my phone still didn't find it. Samsung Estonia finally said that it's probably the fault of a wrong region setting, but it has to be checked and can be changed for a fee, as warranty doesn't cover it. I've been checking for an update for the past couple of days and this morning the device status had changed to custom once again. Wrote to Samsung Estonia, that I'm fine with waiting for the update or paying for the region change, but a device status switching back and forth between official and custom is Samsung's fault and it should be dealt with by them.
Hopefully they'll get the message and will clear this mess with their own resources.
Hey there.
I had a similar 'issue' not long ago. I randomly browsed through the settings and the 'about' section to find that the device status was unofficial. I haven't rooted or flashed anything at all, however it didn't really create a problem. I then restarted my phone, then it said 'official' again only to change back to 'unofficial' again in about 10 minutes.
If i restarted and tried to update quick enough it would work, if the phone ran for a while I got the same message as you 'your device has been modified' or something.
I got the 4.3 update and the problem has since disappeared...
I started a thread too out of curiosity but no one seemed to know the answer. It might just be a little software bug
Hello,
this question might seem somewhat stupid. I've run into serious bugs on my 3 year old Note 4, they come and go, sometimes they appear many times a week and sometimes not for several months in a row. I have insurance, which ends mid-July. I wanted to send it in over a week ago, but after I've read the terms, I thought that it would be hard to get something from them, since the bug doesn't appear every day. Since I moved the SIM card to another phone over a week ago, the Note worked perfectly. Before it would from time to time refuse to call, tell me that some system app had crashed and reboot. After reboot I'm unable to call again (no signal) and have to turn it off and on again, for it to work. Couple of times it froze completely (had to remove the battery) and some months ago I had WiFi problems (connected, but no data transmission) a couple of times.
I think that it's a hardware problem, but I doubt they would wait for weeks for a bug to appear and I want to rule out software problems first. I want to try "the best possible" ROM (I know, it's in the eye of the beholder). I took a look on the threads about LineageOS 15.1/14.1, 14.1 is called stable, but there are pretty much the same bugs mentioned. I need:
- Perfectly working cameras, phone calls (is it important that I have two numbers (normal and "landline") on the same card?), mobile Internet, WiFi, SD-card support, preferably docking station support (the 5in1-one, OTG, HDMI, SD and whatnot. I would like the S-Pen to work, if not to its full potential, then at least "somewhat". PlayStore/GApps (?) are important. I don't need Fingerprint sensor, NFC, Bluetooth. Though it would be nice if all the builtin sensors would work, since I might get to install FL Studio Mobile/IL Remote on it eventually or play some games (very unlikely).
- Ability to record calls automatically would be nice (I know, GDPR, but whatever)
- The most important thing is that it's as stable, as possible
It would be awesome if I could test the new FirmWare in DualBoot. I have a 32GB microSD card.
I'm not an idiot, but lately I'm seriously lacking free time and concentration skills (I don't feel my best mentally). I don't feel able to go through all the Firmware topics (LineageOS 14+15 alone are 1000 pages long), I would ask very kindly if someone could suggest a suiting Firmware and give me a link to a hopefully straightforward flashing how-to with all the latest download links. I would forever be in your debt. Especially if you could also give me a link on "how to get into that" (migration/getting started). I want to be done on Tuesday, if possible, so I'd have 2+ weeks to test everything as thoroughly, as possible.
I don't know anything about customizing one's phones, except for what's possible out-of-the box and with 3rd-party-apps. But I'm a fast learner. I understand English, German and Russian.
Regards,
k_u_
Hi
[Joke] The perfect ROM is the one YOU build  [/Joke]
As you speak English, German and Russian (too bad I'm French  ) I'll assume you live in Europe and you own a N910F.
To get all sensors working (heart rate included) you need stock: one just got out on Sam Mobile with updated BL and modem (DRD1) and April 2018 security update.
You also may consider Alexander's last built.
LOS 15.1 is pretty good as daily driver but I don't think it meets your needs (especially about sensors...), I've been using it for few months.
Can't help about any other custom ROM but in any cases you won't have all sensors on any of them.
You can use SPen Command for the stylus.
I hope this help...

Edit: you own a 910F! The title told me :silly:
IMHO you'd better keep on full stock (or close to) here is a link for Alexander's https://forum.xda-developers.com/no...se-multi-csc-safe-bloat-t3033881/post58925494
Dual boot is a hard work on N910F (never been able to get it work flawlessly :crying: )

With "all sensors" I meant accelerometer, gyroscope and whatever else is used in games and music software. I don't need heart rate/o2/UV sensors, etc.
I see that there was a German update in February, which I didn't receive (maybe it's for Vodafone-BRANDED devices? I have DQ(I/J/A)1 installed, latest update came on January 1st, I believe) and the latest one is indeed the DRD1 for UK. Does EE stand for the British mobile network operator? Will the firmware work the same in Germany or what would differ? WIll OTA continue to work?
I'm already downloading, the best (first) thing to try would be the original firmware, of course. I just thought, Samsung gave up on that model.
One question:
Add each file to it's respective field in Odin v3.13.1. Use CSC_OXM if you want to do a clean flash and HOME_CSC OXM if you want to keep your apps and data.

Is "keeping apps and data" possible/"advisable" in my case? I want to keep everything, but if another firmware "branch" could install with new bugs, maybe it should be installed cleanly.
---
As for Alexander's stuff link - I took a quick look and it's all Chinese to me  If I'll keep having problems with UK firmware, maybe, I'll take another look on that or LOS 15.1/14.1.
Did you have any problems with LOS? Camera problems are mentioned in bugs (maybe would work fine with a different app?), GPS problems (didn't understand that exactly, "doesn't fix satellites"???). I'd like to have up-to-date Android without Samsung's bloatware, but mostly I'd like a STABLE system.
P.S. Oh, yeah, one more question - what do you mean with "updated BL"?
P.P.S. Will flashing the UK firmware "void my warranty" (I don't have warranty anymore, but will the insurance company see, that I flashed a different firmware? KNOX counter or whatnot. (I called my "meta-insurer" (a proxy company) today and asked if I'm allowed to flash a custom ROM, he said, he's not 100% sure, but thinks, I'm not. I would have to ask the actual insurance company tomorrow or re-read the policy, which I might do later.))?
Hi
My feelings are you're not used to mess with your phone , so you better (for now) stick with official firmware. (No Knox trouble or whatever its Samsung's firmware)
IMHO the best for you is to install the last full stock ( did you already download it?) and follow this tutorial step by step https://samsung-firmware.org/download/GALAXY__Note4__/o2ll/EVR/N910FXXU1DRD1/N910FEVR1DRD1/
You should keep your data and still be able to use your phone in Germany.
If you still have issues you should backup every things you can't afford to loose. Because the repair techs will obviously delete all your data (even if they don't fix anything )
In any cases, with you want to go for a custom ROM, I'll give you an help for it.

I had most recently used this thread for a rooted U firmware on my sprint s7 (non edge). It worked pretty well for some time, minus not having good v-mail options on U but that's the way it is. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
My phone has become increasingly buggy lately (loosing data connection randomly, or bluetooth becoming deactivated, either requiring the twofinger reboot salute to get them functioning again).
Looked around and can't really seem to definitavely find anything more up to date with root. So wondering if there are any relatively newer firmwares that are root capable (don't care if its P or U at this point just that they have some of the latest security updates) to flash to my phone if i'm going to do it anyways to just refresh it (and my prl) with the thread i mentioned above.
I'm just trying to make this thing functionally last at least till the pixel3's come out so I can decide what to move on to.
Also, what happened to ymndlz? I had been on one of his rooted firmwares prior to this and he seems to have deleted himself from xda?
