Just read a tweet from Eldar murtazin, who is generally well informed, and today he wrote sonething very disturbing.
Samsung seems to have stopped the production on the wave and the galaxy s due to super amoled screen shortage.
This is nothing short of a disaster for all of us hoping to see the galaxy s being supported with froyo and beyond i guess. (or even cyanogenmod for that matter...)
I really hope this is just a temporarely thing, just as with the droid incedible....what do you guys think?
cant produce the phone when there is no screens for it... so ofc they will once they have a stock
In this case, sell the phone. No big deal.
Sent from my GT-I9000M
this is their best selling phone, and the only real competition againts iphone
i doubt they will stop producing it completely
it'll just be on hold until they get more stock of SAMOLED
they did the same to HTC Desire
but instead of waiting for new stock HTC decided to use another type of screen
as soon as HTC did the change the Desire suddently became less desirable
@allgamer
I hope you are right about that but this would explain why you cant find any SGS here in Edmonton or in Canada at all from what I understand which sucks if you brick and need replacement, etc.
Also, do you think that this issue will delay the FROYO release to those of us who already have the phone?
according to Eldar, they sold their last batch of SAMOLED screens to Apple, who is making a product for next year with our screens in it!
now, i really hate Apple!
they see that retina alone isn't enough, so close the deal with Sammy!
i hope this won't kill Samsungs ambitions to become the biggest brand above Nokia!
yes, they are mostly back ordered even in Toronto as well, the sales are good, it's like iphone always sold out.
froyo has nothing to do with the factory side
froyo will come when the coders are done fixing the bugs and get things working properly
Don't worry about it too much.. Apple has product shortages all the time. More screens will be made. Really, don't worry about it too much..
"ANYMORE" is not the word! Why make such confusion?
Its a break in production due to shortage of SAMOLED screens.

You actually believe that? Apple does it deliberately to make the product more desirable, simple as. They like to see people queueing up 12 hours before a product is launched outside of their shops, good publicity etc.
As the the Super AMOLED rumour, it is just that, a rumour, like most things I see written on the internet. Isn't it samsung who actually produce these screens? And there is a shortage? I dont buy it...
Then again though, I wouldnt trust samdung as far as I could throw them.
That would explain shortage of SGS in Poland.... Especially with one carrier that has best prices for it.... I'm searching this phone for about 1,5 months...
by the way, this can't be true anyways
else the new launch this month on Rogers network will fail completely if that was true

They will probably switch to the sony slcd screens
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
then it'll be a waste, it'll go the way the Desire did, and it will cease to be a Galaxy S
it'll probably be released as a new model Galaxy sub S

Have you seen a desire with the SLCD screen? I prefer them to the AMOLED ones, they are a genuine 480x800 resolution and look sharper, and the colours are not much different IMO. Apparently they are worse on battery power though, despite the claims to the contrary...

AMOLED or SAMOLED? The AMOLED (like the Nexus One) are pretty disappointing in the long run, SAMOLED (like the Galaxy S) hasn't disappointed me even after a few months of owning it.
Isn't the real "strength" of the SAMOLED screen the contrast ratios and the inky blacks...? Will SLCD ever be able to match that because of the back or side lighting needed to actually illuminate the screen?
It's probably just a shortage, they couldn't keep up with HTC's demand for it, and they probably can;t keep up with their own...maybe they didn't truly believe the SGS would be such a success
Logicalstep
I was told from the importers/Saturn that Samsung Galaxy S were empty and Samsung are going to make more Samsung Galaxy S. They told me that people were crazy for Samsung Galaxy S and that's why the stock were empty.
the news and my phone store sources confirms the same, the SGS just sells really really good.
the 16 GB model is always the hardest to get, i did post a topic about it a while back
8 GB models are easier to find, but who would want less?
same reason why 8 GB are easier to find than the 16 GB models
now of course, for Cellphone carriers models those sizes are locked, you don't really get to chose
only the unlocked models you can choose to buy in 8 or 16

"Samsung's Super AMOLED is a variant of AMOLED technology in which the layer which detects touch is integrated into the touchscreen display rather than being overlaid on top. This results in a thinner device and improved outdoor performance."
LCD tech will never be able to match AMOLED blacks, but there's still the "issue" with PenTile RGBR matrix. Red font on black for instance? Looks horrible. Text in general is its achilles heel. Video, images (well, not B&W perhaps ) and graphics looks amazing though.
Hi guys, I am itching to buy a note even though I am with Sprint and would nver switch to ATT. I keep convincng myself to wait but, just not sure this kind of screen realestate will surface in a phone again. I have read just about every forum and review in the past several weeks- at least twice...lol.... The only thing that is holding me up is warranty concerns and the pen tile screen. I have been bothered by every pentile screen I have seen and can clearly see pixels when others claims that you would never see them with normal use or that they don't not exist. I would love to see one in person to aid my buying decision. I am not at all concerned about the size, only the screen as I tend to watch movies, read ebooks, and surf the web more than anything? Please let me know, thanks.

Like you I use mines for the same thing books, netflix and wed.
I look passed the pixels thing and just took the plunge and bought the Note
been happy and no complaints.
I see people talking about volume issues, screen issues, screen lock issues the only issue I had was the size. it's too small for my liking and that's cause Im coming from the Tad 7'' used as cell phone for 1 year.
like Nike just do it. lol

This is my very first Android device, and I have to say that I am very happy with it. I highly recommend this phone. Once you get this screen you'll never back to anything smaller.

Im in Tallahassee Florida with my 24hr old galaxy note. I guess im no expert at screens but this screen is beautiful. Ive had the Tmobile Vibrant and recently just sold my release day international sgs2. The screen is not as bright as my sgs2 but its still top notch. Its crystal clear. You will NOT regret your decision.
Yesturday at work, I watch all my coworkers jaws drop at this device. Most have Moto Razr, iphone4s, streak, incredible s2, and some other new android devices.
Seems like samsung devices are subject to witch hunts, if you look hard enough your bound to find something. I can say with certainty, that I will not have another device until Galaxy Note 2 is out. Mind you Ive had every highend device thats been released in the last 2 years.

I truly don't understand the fuss over the iphone screen. I was without a phone for a couple of hours yesterday and used my coworkers iphone. I had to zoom in on every page unlike my sgs2, infuse and now note. If you were watching me using the phone, you would have thought I was blind trying to navigate ebay, xda, fedex, usps and a few other sites.
Not going to go into long detail but all in all I liked the tmo vibrants screen better than the iphones. Sgs2 and note in my opionion blows other devices out of the water.
Im no sales man or speaker for samsung, but I couldnt imagine using anything other then amoled displays. I went a total 4 weeks without my sgs2, and in between I had a atrix and htc inspire. They both were sold the moment I found a buyer.

Thanks for the feedback. Thats exactly my point. I hated the vibrant's screen because the text looks like Lego blocks. I have a Sprint GS2 and the resolution just isn't good? enough as the text could look jagged and blurry sometimes. I would match prefer the sharp and solid - e ink type of resolution/text on say an IPhone 4 rather than the sometimes oversatuarated color on the Samsungs. That's why I ask about the IPhone 4 screen, not so much for color or contrast but for the sharpness of text sine I read alot; trust me I would never buy an IPhone with a baby screen size from three years ago. The HTC Rezound is the only screen I have seen thus far that can match an Iphone 4 in this regard but that screen size at 4.3 has now become too small for my taste...lol...
Hi Guys...
When i went from s1 to s2 i was like wowww what a screen
And everyone around me told me when they saw the phone like damnn thats a huge and a thin phone how can u call and carry that phone..well after a week or two i wqs used and felt good in my hand...now i have the galaxy note.

But dont get me wrong i love the note

Some people (usually iPhone users) claim that the Note is humongous and far too big to carry around and yet they never say the same about the iPad (double standards). The same people claim the the primary function is a phone, but for most people the primary function is Web Browsing. Sooner or later, iPhone users are going to get fed-up Web Browsing on such a small screen. So Apple will need to follow everyone else and increase the screen size or lose customers.

I don't think they will not by much anyway, they went on so much about the retina display when it came out, they will always have to deliver on it now. Which means increasing resolution, memory and processor all at the same time, and either increasing the price or taking less profit. We know how much apple love there profit margin so doubt they will want to cut that, and would the consumer pay even more for the new iphone?
So true, Galaxy S2 used to look so big to me, now it looks to the GNote like the Iphone looks to the S2.
Seriously, whenever anybody pulls out an Iphone at work now i just point and laugh... "how quaint!" i say.... as you can imagine it never goes down well
You just get used to the size of the thing and I can't imagine going back to anything as piddily as an iphone
We share the same sentiment.
I too cannot go back to a smaller screen device.
Prior to this I had an iPhone 4 but before that I had an HTC desire.
But transitioning from the Desire to the iphone4 was relatively easy due to the difference only being 0.5 .
But from the Note's 5.3 to even a 4.5 will be difficult.
Me too. Could never go back to 4.3 inch
Just think about the 3.5 inches of the iPhone screen...
Hey, it's technically possible to make a 1920x1200 3.5" screen. But you need a f*cking MICROSCOPE to read a web page there.

Lol I pity the iphone fanboys. Allegiance to a company that doesn't give them any freedom of choice. Galaxy Note is the best toy I've ever owned. I rarely touch my laptop or desktop unless I have to.
You know what's something I always thought would be amazing? What is Samsung has a secret weapon already in deployment (as far as screen technology goes)? What if that secret weapon is SAMOLED+?
Think about it... Regular SAMOLED (and HD SAMOLED in the GNexus and Note) uses PenTile, which has 8 sub-pixels per pixel (4 green, and 2 each blue and red)... However, SAMOLED+ is true RGB, and actually uses 12 sub-pixels per pixel. So on SAMOLED+, that's 4 red, 4 green, and 4 blue for each single pixel. Let that sink in for a moment... Most ordinary RGB displays only have 3 sub-pixels per pixel. 1 each of red, green, and blue...
Can you guess where I'm going with this yet?
Essentially, Samsung already has better-than-retina AMOLED displays already out in the wild, if they were to use 3 sub-pixels instead of 12. So, what if it's only a matter of releasing a firmware update to such equipped devices, so that they effectively quadruple their screen resolutions by addressing 3 sub-pixels per pixel instead of 12?
Wouldn't that be awesome? I could just see it now:
Apple announces their iPad3, and how it has quadruple the resolution of the outgoing generation. The Apple crowd goes "Woo, yay..." while everyone else goes "Damn... I wish my screen were that nice..."
Then Samsung comes out "Hey guys! You know how awesome your SAMOLED+ displays are? You want higher resolution? Well, guess what, you've already got it! Here's an update for ya! *boom!!* Quadruple your old resolution!! You're welcome! "
Apple: "WTF!? Seriously? Foiled again!! Damn you Samsuuuuuuuung!!!!"
can't look back
Went from iPhone 3G to Dell Streak 5", waiting on the arrival of the Note... couldn't go back to a smaller phone. Didn't know what I was gonna do when Dell announced they weren't gonna update the Streak 5, so you can imagine how happy I was with the announcement of the Note... FINALLY a phone that will actually be supported by it's company!!!! No more DJ Steve dependence (He was a God send don't get me wrong), just finally not having to keep updating to fix bugs in someones independent OS launches.
The same in here. I bought HTC desire, it was my first 3,7" and it was like ooooh, thos is big, this is not like my old G1! Then, SGS2 come out and i bought it and it was like oooooh, this is much bigger, was hoping i will have no problems with the size because of my small hands. I got use to it. Everytime i buy a new phone, my friends are laughting on me, that i have that big bricks. And then, i bought Note. Soooo huge. After 2 weeks a get used to it. My friends stoped laughting on me after i made home cinema in club from my Note
1 weeks ago i held sgs2 in my hands... ou sh*t, it is tooo small
Cant go back to smaller phone.
1 year ago my son brought home the Samsung 4" Focus (windows phone) and I couldn't believe how sharp the Super-Amoled and 4" screen was compared to my iPhone 4. So I made the leap and soon got the 4'5" Samsung Infuse...extremely nice (except the GPS sucks) and it got me used to carrying around a much larger phone.
Now I'm all set for the Note in 2 weeks. I can't wait to see peoples reactions.
And I agree those 3.5" screens look like toys and should be handed down to <5 year olds.
Just got my Note about an hour ago and Im already in love! ... It makes my Infuse (which is already a big phone) look small

Congrats, I just got one as well yesterday. Really blown away with the screen real estate.
oh don't get me started, i can't even look at my iPhone 4 anymore!
I came from the Xperia Arc. That screen was (is - my son has it now and loves it) very nice, and the envy of smaller phone owners. The trouble for me was the complete lack of internal storage.
Now it seems so very small!
That's exactly what I said when I bought the Gnex... When I play with my iPhone 4s I can clearly see how the screen is sooo tiny... Can't believe I've stick with such a small screen for so long. Can't wait to get my hand on the note when it comes out next week in Canada!
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
Here's my story:
Started with the OG Droid - 3.7", cool!! So much bigger than my BB Curve that I had been using.
Then swapped it for a Nexus 1 a couple of months later, partly cos it was slightly wider (in portrait mode) though still 3.7", which made a big difference to me - cooler still!!
Then got the G-Nexus on day 1 - 4.65" - woohooo!!!!! Absolutely loving it!!
By then, I figured that if I could have 5.3", then why not, so I swapped it for the Note!!
YEP, CAN NEVER GO BACK!! Held the Nexus 1 again the other day - like others said, how on earth did I use to live with that mini screen?!?!
I'm tempted to say that this is the biggest I can go, but how many times have I already said that???!
I ordered my HOX from ebay after reading all the positive reviews about it's crisp screen. But as soon as I powered up my phone and went in to the setting screen I could clearly see the dull yellowish tint on the whites. I had come from super amoled screen on SGSII. So the screen looked too warm for my liking, blacks were also not that deep.
After updating the device to the latest firmware, flashing 4 different custom ROMs, the yellow tint did not go away. Now today after two days I just decided to sell it for $120 less than what I had bought it for. $120 gone in vain.
From now on I will always buy electronic stuffs before testing it personally, and will never trust all these "REVIEW" sites.
Hope the SGSIII will have better screen than HOX and SGSII, otherwise I'm f****d.

Don't worry mate... **** happens. I hope you'll have a more satisfying experience with the SGS3. It's always a good idea to try out a demo of the phone at a local store before taking the plunge, but as far as HOX is concerned, it's been a gamble so far... people have gone through upto as many as 9 replacements (acc to the HOX forum) and are still finding issues with it. Some have been lucky enough to get a fault-free device, but a significant proportion are very miffed at the QC implemented by HTC before shipping the phones off. Same goes with the HOS - what with the chipping issues and all. Replacements are not the solution here, as i guess HTC needs to seriously take a good hard second look at its manufacturing process.

Read on the HOX forum that the yellow tint is due to the lamination glue that takes some time to dry out and set and then the colours become better. I really don't know how accurate that info is, but going by my personal experience with a One X (friend's) I must say the screen is positively the best I have ever seen on a mobile device so far. That said, I still have to put it next to an SGS3 to see how they both compare (this can be a very subjective feeling, so there's no way to tell without actually eyeballing it yourself)
Good job brother! Welcome to the club.
Sold my HOX on ebay yesterday and ordered my SGS3 today. I just didn't love the HOX-- I finally smoothed it out mostly with a custom rom and kernel, only to introduce some other goofiness. Oh well--the SGS2 was my fave all time android device so I'm excited to use the new one.

I doubt that it would have lost it's tint, because it was way too yellow.

REAL white does seem slightly yellow, but not everyone likes it. I had my Plasma Calibrated, and while it made the detail much better by making the grey scale perfect, it was way to yellow for my taste, so i changed the temperature. It may not be 'correct', but its much more pleasant (and i still have the details and brilliant blacks).
You get a lot of 'true white' nazis on here, that blindly moan about AMOLEDs being blue and over saturated, but some of us like that.

So.... I just left my local AT&T store after some quality hands-on time with the Moto X. My verdict: take my damned money, Motorola!
Disclaimer: I'm not a Moto or AT&T rep, just a guy who's owned 10+ Android devices since the G1 and up to the Galaxy S4. And currently I'm rocking the Lumia 1020 as my daily driver: love it too!
So I walked in at 9am when the store opened and made a quick sweep of the store looking for a Moto customatic booth. Today is the official launch and my bet was 50/50 they'd have a display up and running. Turns out they didn't :/ Way to go AT&T! Next I made a bee line for the store manager. Long story short: he didn't know when they would have display models available but he was more than happy to open a brand new white model up for me...
So? The Moto X feels fantastic. Think iPhone size, but rounded to fit exactly in your hands. I can honestly say there's no other phone outside of Nokia's Lumia series that feels as good in hand as the X. I'm 6'0" and have what I consider to be average size paws. The svelte bezels meant I could effortlessly reach all the way to the far corners of the screen, FINALLY :victory: I'm totally in love. Manufacturers keep making these razor-thin slabs with zero ergonomics and it's time for a revolution (seriously).
Since I'm a little busy this morning I will list a few observations and hopefully post some pictures later:
- The phone is SOLID. Both in weight and balance. Again the best comparison here is the iPhone 4S (I've never owned one but played with them enough). The guts of this little machine must be packed tight because it feels nothing like Samsung's M.O. of light and flimsy.
- The screen is sharp and and saturated, just like every AMOLED I've used before. Side by side with the GS4 I could discern no difference in screen quality. I would like to throw in the personal opinion that 1920x1080 on a 5", much less a 4.7" screen is completely unnecessary. Completely. GS4 owners (I was one) can argue till they're blue in the face but they'd still be mistaken. If 720p was excellent on a Note II at 5.5" then 720p at 4.7" is that much better. Yep, it's true.
- The buttons did not rattle or feel loose as some reviewers have mentioned. This is just one unit I tried but I didn't see looseness/rattling in it. We'll see how those buttons actually hold up after regular usage.
- I didn't test the camera. I will when they get the display models in. What's gonna beat the Lumia 1020 anyway?
- More to come....
Nice first impressions! Looking forward to more
Oh and when I read the title for a second I thought that you had gotten hold of a device called the "moto X mini" and I'm like holy crap is this real!? Lol and then I reread it again at then facepalmed.

Haha, thanks for the kudos! I changed the title to disambiguate a bit. The Moto X is already "mini" :good:
I also went into the att store to look at the device. My thoughts:
One of the best feeling phones. It's amazing how small it is yet how much screen you get
The voice commands work well. In a loud ATT store, I just said okay google and i said it in a whisper and it picked it up.
the screen was not as good. I've had a droid dna for 9 months, i can tell a difference. The whites are more yellowish. The icons are good, the problem with going 1080p vs 720p is not the pictures, its the font. The font on the htc was customized better.
I coudln't try active notifications even though i have it on my phone through google play store. It's stupid to me that att or any other carrier puts some stupid video so the phone never turns off. When i turn off the phone and try to put it face down, i get some stupid moto x video and not the active notifcations. It really is super stupid. Nice job ATT.
Camera was okay. I did notice it was slightly washed but it was okay. when using it it, the tap to focus was not turned on by default yo uhave to go to settings and turn it on. after that, it focused better. The focus was relativaliey sharp and i just applied aftereffects to the phone and i was fine with the phone. I even compared it to the htc one and i wasn' tlike "oh wow the htc one is so much better"
Overall, i was dissapointed by the screen but very very very impressed with the build, size and body. It's very tempting.
Went and checked it out as well. Returned my OG Pro that I got a week ago and paid the extra $140 to cover the additional cost of the Moto X. The phone just feels right as corny as that sounds. I go through phones like no other, but this one has a good upside and feel.
I have a feeling that this phone will be one of those phones that everybody will crap on saying the HTC One or the S4 will be infinitely better without trying the phone out.
But as soon as they try it out they will change their tune and say it is a great phone and would be willing to trade their phone in for it.
Thanks for all the info, everyone. Just got a One a few weeks back so probably not in the upgrade market, but curious to see how this Device does. It's nice to see Google out there and focusing their efforts on non-nexus devices...the more access consumers have to this tech, the better. The active notifications sound really awesome, however, I can't stand the color rendering of the AMOLEDs. I know, I know, this has been said 1000x. But having spent much of my career assembling documents and presentation with a high level of graphic design attention, these AMOLEDs just kill to look at. The not-quite-white whites and super-saturated blues and greens just burn a hole in my soul. That said, still can't wait to get a hold of this thing and give it a run in the store. From what I can tell right now, this sounds like something I'd strongly consider upgrading to if I were in the market for a device.

Why's that if you don't mind me asking? What is it about the other two that is more appealing than the Moto X?
The moto X screen is great and the whites are whiter than the S4. My favorite features are the notifications and the Motorola Connect, love it.

I don't mind at all!
The phone is pretty good, but there are some things I like quite a lot more about the GPe One or GS4.
Both of them have better displays. The One's aluminum is terrific. Stock android is amazing.
I think the only thing I'll really miss, and I mean really, is the voice control. It's really awesome.

Oh you went with the google play models, now that changes everything! I can see how you like those more than this phone.
I had a Google play s4 and decided on the moto x. For me its the size of the device. Being able to handle it easier one handed feels a lot better than trying to juggle the s4. Both great phones though. Maybe the s4 will get pulled out of the drawer one day
