changing your signal for better or worse... - Vibrant General

what would be the best i guess service? you should use wcdma gsm cdma on this phone? if you wanna pick your signal you can get into the secret menu by going to your dialer and putting *#*#4636#*#* tell me what you guys think about this...

What?
I don't...
What?

This is a GSM phone, changing it to anything else might just brick it.
*Maybe posting those test codes was a bad idea.

*#*#4636#*#* and phone information won't change anything. AT ALL.

Correct my n1 could lock on wcdma through that window but for some reason the vibrant won't lock onto it..... but the vibrant holds a betyer 3g signal than my n1 did...

i noticed where my MyTouch 3G had a "wcdma preferred" selection, this one has "WCDMA only", or "GSM/CDMA PRL"
mine came default set to the "GSM/CDMA PRL" and i changed to WCDMA only
connection or download speed seemed to pick up some
i don't think you're going to brick your phone changing that selection - if it doesn't show an improvement, or if you're in a 2g coverage area, i presume it will drop your svc, but don't know why you can't just reselect the default setting

This is just wrong information. This is a GSM/WCDMA phone. 2G/Edge is GSM technology where 3G/UMTS is WCDMA technology. I force my phone back and fourth all the time for network testing.
P.S. I'm a field tech for TMO.

I dont have my vibrant yet, on its way. So your saying that when you enter the phone info page WCDMA Only is not longer an option in the drop down menu? Or is it grayed out?

Cool.
If you can, will you post on here if you hear any rumblings of an OTA to fix:
GPS reception issues
The Totally Broken Compass
General 3G Reception problems
Please?
Or, hey, if you can confirm if the issues at hand are software or hardware-related. That would do it for me.

Well, if I want to keep my job I'm not supposed to post privileged information but I will say this, most issues wont be acknowledged until a specific amount of complaints are called in. In bold words, if no one complains to T-Mobile directly (not on a forum) they wont fix anything. That's just Business 101. Sorry I wish I could be more help.
As for if they are software or hardware, I do not know that. As the phone has only been out for a week, there has been no information from within about any issues. Again, sorry!

My 3G reception has been fine considering T-Mobile's 3G tower deployment and with how my old phone behaved, but anyway it does appear to be a Samsung thing. The -dBm readout under the Android menu system is completely wrong.

I too have noticed that making changes in the *#*#4636#*#* menu to the band selection does not stay. As soon as you go back into this menu, the setting is reverted back to GSM/CDMA auto (PRL), no matter what I set it to. I have noticed that this setting will stick, however, on my N1. The only differences I can see between the Vibrant and my N1 are that the Vibrant is 2.1, and the N1 is 2.2.
Anyone have any ideas as to why this setting doesn't stay?

TMobile Edge to H signal???

I live on the borderline Edge and G3/H signal towers. When it switches to Edge, the G2 is EXTREMELY slow on the data.
Is there anyway to force the G2 to maintain the G3/H signal and cut out the edge? I live in Rancho Cucamonga, CA and seems that its always on edge instead of the faster speeds. Please help!
Try going to settings> mobile networks
Then make sure that "use only 2g networks" is off
Then go to access points name and select "tmobile data" if that doesn't work go to a tmo store and complain

It's *#*#4636#*#*
GSM/Auto (PRL) seems to hold onto UMTS/HSPA longer than WCDMA (Preferred).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6591742&postcount=2
tried to force the setting but it will go back to the wcdma preferred setting afterwards...anyone see the same?
is the Gsm/AUTO only better?
Not sure. Sometimes it seems like if I back out instead of hitting home it defaults back.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
According to "T-Mobile" they said there upgrading their towers for the HSPA+ network thats why calls and text messages are not going thru sometimes........Lol!!
I just pressed back after changing the setting on mine and it's sticking.
I set it to GSM Auto (PRL) and it does seem to make a big difference in battery life (3G coverage is kinda funny in my area).

You have the # and * transposed.
Try *#*#4636#*#*. You shouldn't have to try dialing, it should immediately jump into testing mode

[Q] Tried to connect to LTE went back and super slow now

Hey my friend wanted me to check if I had LTE in my area so i did the *#*#4636#*#* and clicked LTE/GSM/CDMA and did a speed test. Clearly I didn't have LTE testing myspeeds like (.12mpsD 1.2mpsU). Im curious as to if I accidently caused somthing to get screwed up in that section and would a full restore to stock fix that issue.

AT&T I assume (since you bothered to try at all).
Did you change your APN settings? Did you change the setting BACK TO WCDMA preferred?

Best you can do is go back and change it to stock (WCDMA preferred I believe)
Also make sure your APN is set correctly. Speed test via AT&T's cingular proxy are throttled. Read through this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2021401

You weren't going to get LTE without changing to an LTE-enabled APN (for AT&T, it's "PTA" instead of "PHONE" or "WAP.CINGULAR"), so I assumed you had changed it.
Double check to make sure you're on WCDMA preferred ('ve had it not "stick" on phones before"). Then, restart your device.

How to force LTE/GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) or any other Preferred Network Type.

Hello, I have no problem receiving an LTE signal on BCE (Canada) through the Phone Info Menu. I can select any of the preferred network types including LTE, LTE/GSM, CDMA, LTE/GSM/CDMA but it won't stay. Every day I have to go back into the menu and it reverts back to the first selection "WCDMA".
Does anyone know how to force this so it stays on LTE/GSM/CDMA. So it will stay on the LTE-enabled network unless there is a loss of signal and it reverts back to HSPA? It does this automatically when "LTE/GSM/CDMA is selected, but again reverts to CDMA within a day usually.
I did some searches here, but 99% of what comes up is just people asking how to enable LTE or if their network gets it?
Any ideas? Maybe some sort of macro thing.
Regards.

Now in settings/more/mobile networks u will have an option to choose and it will stick. U have to add the line every time u flash ROMs.

Thanks for the helpful reply man. I haven't edited a build.prop yet, so Ill have to check it out.
Alright thats all done now, works like a charm. Like that I have the option now either way. I typically stick to WCDMA/GSM when on the road or at work where LTE is spotty, but on days off for around town I would rather just be on LTE as I usually just looking up something quick when Im shopping or something.
Thanks again.

I keep it at LTE, it does have less bars but quality is same for me, speeds are amazing. Also 4G is only data, not voice, so when u have an active call it will change to 3G.(but that's not the phone it's the network)
don't forget to do it again if you flash new ROM, also Tethering WiFi won;t work, there is a fix but it's complected for me, so I just go to W/G if I need to share connection.
So, my Nexus 4 shipped today, and it'll be in my grubby little hands by tomorrow evening. I, unfortunately, can't activate it until March, as I have to wait for my Verizon contract to end, but I keep seeing this LTE stuff, with no real explanation. I do know that the Nexus 4 has an inactive LTE radio in it, but what's the use of activating it, if T-Mobile doesn't have LTE? Is this only for the AT&T users?

There are other threads dealing with who can access LTE in the USA. I am in Canada and on Bell.
I'm in Canada, using Fido. I activate the LTE on my Nexus 4. It works fine, but I'm not able to share internet with wifi hotspot.
I have Android 4.2.1 (latest OTA from Google).
There is a bug with this version or it's only because I activate LTE manually ?

need help with this. im really choked about this ROM
Even if I select "LTE/CDMA" in the Mobile network settings menu. The settings page keeps displaying "CDMA preferred".

Thanks, but LTE doesn't work in my country, its always stick on lte/gsm/wcdma but it doesnt detect my gsm so i have to manually set it on GSM only but wont stick here every time i restart my phone i have manually set it on GSM only otherwise it wont detect my network
Any advice ?
How can I make "WCDMA Only" the default selection?
Where I Iive there is no LTE and the coverage of the service is quite poor, so the phone keeps jumping between E and 3G/H. I have to manually go into the phone app and select "WCDMA Only" is there a build prop tweak to make the "WCDMA Only" the default option instead of "WCDMA Preferred"?
Thank you.

For everyone still searching for a solution to this problem, this worked for me. Go to phone information and turn your radio off. Then switch to LTE/GSM/CDMA then power down, DO NOT TURN YOUR RADIO BACK ON. Now remove your Sim card, put it back in, reboot and you should be good to go. DO NOT HGO BACK INTO PHONE INFORMATION OR ELSE IT WILL NOT STAY
If it still isn't connecting try fiddling around with your APN settings.

Force CDMA for Network Extender

I had a S3 before I bought the G2. I have a Verizon network extender at my house. I typically get 1-2 bars of 4G, and I had issues with call quality and dropped calls on the S3. With the G2 my 4G signal is about the same. I used an app call Phone Info on the S3 to force it into CDMA while I'm at home, which would give me full signal from the network extender. This app doesn't work with the G2. Any suggestions?

Is there anyway to get 3G and 4G only?
My question is general and i ask in name of both TouchWiz (preferably) and AOSP roms, as i havent had the option to get rid of GSM in none of them.

Limiting mobile network mode to 3G/4G only, meaning no GSM on it.

IF you have a GMS phone and on a GMS network, then that's the only signal you'll receive.
If you're on the wrong forum and/or down-load the wrong rom that'll have an effect also.
There are certain modes under Mobile Networks, many Custom ROMs feature hidden options i.e such as LTE Mode Only. What i am after is for my data never to drop on 2G. I want it strictly at 3G/4G mode only

Wow, idea, is that what you think this is, an idea? Why would someone post an idea in the, let me cite, "Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting" section?
Dude, im after a solution or a workaround for an issue, and the issue does not matter to the world as long as the question is clear enough.
Your theory is incorrect as there is WCDMA mode only, which is absolutely compatible with GSM networks. The point is to never drop on 2G protocols. If you want details, ill throw tons of them, im a network engineer and i can show you anything you need from the tower perspective, my question is from the phone perspective, and that's all.
Some carriers have strict or stupid band jumps, meaning the towers are configured incorrectly to change the transmission mode (i.e you get H+ when the signal is good), so to avoid a carriers stupid mistake, i wanna limit my handset to reject 2G connections (GPRS, EDGE).
Belittling is not an option, i'm dyslectic and i try my best to make my words as less personal as possible, so please next time respond with the intention to answer the question asked and not the one you understood.

Haha ? engineering and can't find a solution. Then there is no solution.
I really don't see the big deal here. A fellow XDA'er has a legitimate question on how to force or is there a way to force 3G or 4G/LTE. I too would like to know if there's a way to only force the phone to use LTE.
LTE Mode only bas been around for quite some time, so has WCDMA (3G). In fact, as you can see on the screenshot i attached a page behind, the developers of the custom Rom have made the feature available. It seems the solution is there but just not as a choice.
Generally, i've been disappointed with this section, even though i myself have critisized people for asking questions in irelevant places, this section remains highly ignored. It seems only power-users will pop around once in a while where they accidentally read a question that may've been a problem for them in the past (myself included), or a troll who thinks belittling will get them somewhere, unfortunatelly.
