Hi All,
I was wondering of there's a way to change the Start menu or the "Programs" Link in the Start Menu to open another application. I want to develop something like gStart, but for PocketPC (on smartphone u can change the a registry key to set another application as the default app when u click "Start" button). Mio A700 screenshots has a gr8 MioMenu very nice and sexy so i want o do something like that.
thanks for your help
On PPCs the start menu works like in regular windows – there is a folder ("start menu") under windows with all the shortcuts. You can change the files there, create subdirectories etc.
You can also catch the taskbar window (class "SS_TASKBAR I think…) and just cover the start button with your own window.
Hope this helps.
you must edit the shellres.dll file , in this file has the path to the "programs folder"
I think he was pertaining to a custom "programs menu" like calling for example folderview.exe and not the Path or not where the folder is being called.
A programs menu replacement instead of using the defualt one.
I actually saw an app like that some time ago, it was very small like a few kb and just lied in the background waiting for you press the start and when you did it launched an app of your choice instead of showing the start menu...
Don't remember the name though : / think it was based on something called green button or something which is basically the same thing but for the call button... maybe you should around some, or hopefully someone knows what i am talking about and can give you a link

You could add a shortcut to any other folder and then hide the programs link. To do this, set the Programs folder to hidden.

Yup pretty much like that, but except for the Start or Windows Start, the "Programs" with in the start menu is being intercepted and launching an alternative "Programs Menu"
I guess the only way is to make an ordinary Start Menu replacement (same as the defualt Start Menu) with the exception of having the "Programs" launch another program.
This way, looks and feels of WM is still the same.
First of all I searched for this answer for hours and didn't find anything.
I installed Wisbar and it had an option so that whenever you held down the stylus over the clock on the task bar it would open "Clocks & Alarms," instead of showing the menu of Analog or Digital.
Basically I want to be able to do this without having to use Wisbar (I uninstalled it already, wasn't for me.) Can anyone help? A registry edit, replacing a file with a shortcut, I dunno something. It doesn't have to be the hold option, it could just be the single tap.
Thanks in advance!
Uuuhhhhh....enable the Date Plug-in on the Today Screen and tap it?
Thanks for the fast reply but I don't use the "Date" Today plug-in. I use the tweak that displays the date and time in the task bar.
If you want to make a link use my fix here http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=57134&highlight=

Make a shortcut on your PDA using something like GSFinder and edit it to say:
Code:
"ctlpnl.exe" cplmain.cpl,16
Otherwise use notepad on your PC, and type:
Code:
27#"ctlpnl.exe" cplmain.cpl,16
Save it as clocks.lnk, copy onto your PDA and run it.

Do I copy clocks.lnk into a specific folder on my pda?
THank you very much vijay555
Edit: I put clocks.lnk into My Documents and nothing happened it just sent me to the start of file explorer. What does this exactly do?
you need to put it in /windows/start menu/ and then it will show up when u hit start.
gtdRR: apologies, I've edited the post above to clarify - if you're using gsfinder, then make the shortcut described, but if you're using Notepad to make the .lnk (which is the easiest way, copy and paste on your PC then sync it over to your PDA) then use the 27#.... method I've posted.
You can stick it anywhere, doesn't have to be in \windows\

Thanks once again vijay555, that will be very useful but I would still like to find out if the shortcut can be enabled like it was when I had WisBar. Through the clock on the taskbar.
THANKS FOR ALL THE FAST REPLIES!
I found another way to get to Clock & Alarms. Hold the action button on the D-Pad and then click and hold the clock in the task bar. With practice this can be done in 2 sec. When you let go a menu pops up and then you just choose Clock.

I don't use that program.
samans wm5newmenu can set clocks&alarms as an item under the left or right softkey, or buttons.
When you click on Programs on the Start Menu you get the Programs window, right?
How can I link to that?
I want to add it to an icon on cLaunch. Tried the "windows\start menu\programs" but it opens file explorer in that location. I want to access the same window you get if you tap "Programs" in the start menu.
Anyone?
Thanks!
erm its difficult.
The easiest way to get to the same looking window for Programs is to get hold of a file called Folderview.exe. That does it. But it only does that folder anyway.
If you can program or create a script then you can launch the programs screen by sending keystrokes to the Start menu but again only shows that folder.
If you want to show the files in any folder but in icon view rather than list then you can either get something which changes the built in file manager to show icon view or else use a separate file manager for it like Explorer (formerly gsfinder++). That way you get the same sort of look.
Sorry I dont have the links to all this stuff but it might help you searching.
Folderview.exe... can't find it. is it supposed to be part of WM6 or is it an add-on?
See if this works
From the "IPhone like..." thread, see if this works.
\Windows\fexplore.exe"\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

it's added to wm6 devices by HTC as part of the HTC today plugin.
got it. Its just what wanted. but...
Internet favorites files dont show up, but that is not so bad.
The other diference between this prog and clicking the "programs" link on the start menu is that, when I enter a folder, "Games" for example, if I press hardware key "OK", the program closes, while if i clicked the "programs" on the start menu, and entered the "Games" Folder and pressed "OK" it would go back to the original "programs" window.

The name of the phone exe is cprog.exe, you cn find it in your \windows directory
thanks so much, would not have figured that one out.
Hi, and thanks for your last help. My phone is running smooth and fast with duttys HG v.08! I would like to add a phone icon to my quick links (a link, so I can go directly the dial pad), is this possible? Again, thanks. Cheers.
Does the far-left button not do this in that ROM? I only have the stock so can't check.

No, I was wondering the same thing, with taht excellent rom, 'phone' is replaced by 'all people'.
I don't find it very convenient, as we already have 'all people' in the home screen tabs.
I'd appreciate the original 'phone' to come back as the left soft key.
How about the left hard key? the one that by its very nature is the phone key, and brings up the phone pad?
Alternatively, to make a quick link, if you can't see 'phone' when you create a new quick link and select program then the phone.lnk shortcut isn't in the start menu folder, in which case you can create it yourself, it contains the code
18#:MSCProg?tapres.dll,-22555
or heres mine. Drop it in your windows/start menu folder and now when you click new quicklink-program you should see 'phone' listed. (Had to zip it, can't upload .lnk files directly)
Yes, as there's that nice big hardware key "on every tab" to bring the phone up, most find the softkey redundant, thus setting it to a more useful "All people"
Thank you
Thank you all for taking your time. Samuel, that was exactly what I needed. It worked! Now I have a phone link where I use the most. Thanks mate. Cheers to all.

Samsamuel:
Quick question -- I want to DISABLE the left hard button so that it does not open the phone pad when pressed. Can I do that by removing phone.lnk from the windows folder?
Thanks

sorry not sure how you would do that.
I suspect its not as simple as moving the phone.lnk from windows\start menu
You could maybe try aebuttons and remap the left key to do nothing?
