If I have a recovery image that I backed up with Clockwork Recovery back before I installed the OTA update, can I safely restore that image with ROM Manager, and go back to the old radio, and then safely unroot from there by restoring the stock RUU?
Will this work, or will my radio not work?
I have a few backups I could restore from 2 weeks ago, just curious.
I found this thread:

Confirmed it works!
after I rooted the SGS, if I factory reset the SGS, will this make it unrooted?
It should, because rooting just modifies the system settings/kernel. If you reflash the firmware, it will wipe these files
I updated with the RUU and am now rooted ( have soff). If I perform a factory reset, will my phone still be rooted with s off running 2.2?

it should stay rooted and S-off stays as well. su and the su app are put on the system folder so it would not be cleared with a factory reset.
Factory reset formats your DATA so you lose all downloaded apps and data associated with those apps and settings you made on your phone.
For whatever reason I couldn't get the ota to install on my wife's rooted/unlocked M. It failed at verifying apos, though I had used matts utility to go back to fresh stock, rooted and used stock recovery to install she hasn't or even knows how to mess with apps or bloat like that. If I'm not mistaken it's something with the maps app, so I left her on the 9.8.1q-66 and just flashed baseband. Froze updater as well.
I however got the ota to install on my phone, can I restore my twrp backup, then wipe data and factory reset on her phone to get her on a working update path?
Sorry if that is a stupid question, seems logical.

Yes.
Hi, since I have the s7 edge cell with root and twrp recovery, I would not want to lose all the installed apps.
If I reflash the firmware and then reinstallerei the TWRP recovery and root for your phone, then I should do a wipe data / factory reset to restart the phone. So I would lose everything as happened to me in the past.
Is there a workaround so as not to lose everything? Thanks in advance.
You can backup all app be settings with titanium backup and restore free flashing your rom
