[INFO] AOSP vs Sense Screenshots - EVO 4G General

Just a quicky to answer some questions. Maybe should be in some easy to find place (like if the wiki was working or a read this first sticky, I dunno).
This isn't full AOSP it is just a modded version of tjohnsonjr's AOSP-style EVO rom. So the top bar is black instead of white, but most everything else is normal AOSP. I'll maybe do some more later with a Froyo build (or hopefully cyanogen's froyo soon). If someone wants to get some parallel shots from Sense let me know and then I can post them side by side. If not I'll probably do it eventually.
Homescreen (power widget is not AOSP, it is from the market, but the Power Control widget in sense is the same as AOSP):

I'm not necessarily asking for screenshots showcasing any of these scenarios, but I've got a couple of questions regarding AOSP vs Sense... And you seem willing to help illustrate the differences so I thought I'd ask! I'm kinda waiting for CM6 before I try an AOSP ROM. I can help ya out with the Sense screenshots if you want btw, just lemme know what apps/screens you want and I'll start uploading 'em. I can start w/the stuff equivalent to what you've already posted if you want.
1) Does the stock AOSP browser lose whatever windows/tabs were open when the phone is rebooted? I was actually surprised that the Sense browser does this ('cuz my iPod touch's browser preserves them), I was also surprised it's limited to only 4 tabs. The thumbnail previews and Flash Lite are nice but those two things are getting on my nerves. I'll probably try Opera Mini or Dolphin HD soon.
2) Does the AOSP lock screenever display any other info besides the clock and/or pattern? I don't think I've ever seen any screenshots of it doing anything else... I do love the txt message previews on the Sense lock screen, and the music player shortcuts + album art.
It's mildly annoying that you can't disable the Sense lock screen and leave only the pattern lock (so you have to go thru both every time if you want a code lock) but it makes sense, no pun intended, Sense's lock screen enhancements would have no screen to live on if you were able to do that (something people seem to obviate when they complain about this).
3) This is probably what I'm most concerned with... How does AOSP handle contact integration w/Facebook? On Sense you can import all your Facebook contacts (/yuck) or you can just link existing contacts (I guess it searches for similar names, e-mails, or phone numbers) to their FB profile and it fills in extra info on your phone based off their profile. I'm very glad you can do the latter...
Altho it's a bit clumsy if you're very anal about the way you save your contacts. It seems when you fill out extra info manually (birthdays etc) it doesn't always save or sync all of it to your Google account. Names and phone numbers are sync'd but I'm not sure stuff like birthdays is, seems to depend on how the contact originated (phone # saved from the call log, e-mail saved from Gmail account, etc.).
I don't have a very good grasp over that yet, but I do like the way it works in theory... I've been meaning to enter a bunch of old contacts into my GMail account manually to see how they behave once sync'd, that might solve most of the oddities I see when the contacts originate on the phone. So I'm wondering how AOSP handles all of this, does it let you "link" contacts to their FB profile a-la Sense? Or is it more rudimentary?
Sidebar: For some people the best solution might just end up being porting some of the AOSP apps to their Sense-running phones... I might try doing that for certain things (I'm thinking the browser right now), unless I fall in love w/CM6. I do like some the various shortcuts within Sense, like jumping to someone's FB pics right from their contact page (w/o jumping into the browser or anything, it's like they're in a gallery app). I also love the shortcuts to share stuff... From any web page, picture, song, etc. you can hit the share button and you're presented with a menu full of options (mms, Gmail, mail, FB, Bluetooth, etc., it spans the whole screen), I'm assuming that's a Sense thing, no? It actually works quite well, web sites are shared as links, pics are size-converted as necessary, etc.
People don't mention things like this enough when discussing the subject, and I'll be damned if I've ever seen a phone review that goes even remotely near that kinda detail... Some of Anandtech's reviews touch on a few aspects but not much.
On the negative side, I don't care much for the Sense Launcher... I don't think anyone that longs for a truly logical UI would, unless their most used app is the phone dialer, and even then... That bottom bar needs an overhaul. The space for the + button on Sense is wasted after you've got your phone fully customized; and once you get over the flash, many of the market widgets easily put Sense's to shame, 'specially now that they're even doing scrollable widgets on ADW and Launcher Pro. I haven't messed w/the Calendar much yet (I've yet to import most of my entries from my old phone, kinda dreading it).

I liked the AOSP contacts/dialer on my Nexus better than the Evo Sense People/Dialer.
I have to click "link to facebook" and find the individual from a list of all my friends with the Sense app.
With AOSP contacts, you can set Facebook to sync only friends you've added to contacts. So then, if let's say I add "John Doe" to contacts, the app upon recognizing his name fills in his Facebook pic, status updates, etc and keeps everything sync'd nicely with google.

Thanks, looks like the sync/linking aspect might actually be more seamless on AOSP then... I don't have an issue with having to manually link them on Sense (it usually finds the proper FB contact no problem), but the actual sync'ing of info after linking doesn't seem to be entirely seamless... I'm seeing these random <Sense> tags under notes on my contacts on GMail.

[Req] - WM6.5 Twitter Tab + notification

Hello dear community,
With this Id like to request a certain application that would increase my uptodateness by a lot. Yes a twitterplugin , cause i love twitter actually.
So to begin, I've comeup with a concept for it.. also to better explain what Ive got in mind

[very simple mockup ]
Okay so basicly it has a
tabslide for updating your status
tabslides for unread tweets*
*cause tweets will only have 140 characters.. it will be possible to show them completely in the tabslide itself.. hovering over means.. it is read
avatar image
it has a function to show like unread text/email... but than how many unread tweets.
it should have a notification option in the sound/alarms section inside wm6.5 options.. so you can add your own sound/vibrate/mute to it.
and most important.. it should run in backround.. without popping up in the taskmessenger.
it should have options for how many times a day it will update (5 minutes/30 minitues etc)
clickable url's
extra - a sort of extra inprogram window ( this will mean you go out of wm6.5 today ). where you can see all tweets. or at least latest 100 or something
I hope someone can develop this, cause i think personally it will have a big target audience Me myself.. aint a programmer.. would like to, but i simply dont know where to start on it and/or how!
tx

anyone? comon know some want it too
this would be really nice

this thread is also on developing a twitter tab for wm6.5
let me get my cabs working then I will see where I can go with mine. I like the idea though. If someone wants to beat me to it thats cool too.

but im talking about how it looks in the first post on this page..that looks bad ass!! but im trying the other one to see whats what
Isn't twitter accessible via standard SMS? I thought most people use twitter in tandem with their built-in SMS system, and since you already have a txt plugin on titanium you should be good to go!
Sure, it would be nice to see the mailboxes kept seperate between tweets and all else, but personally I'd like to see an RSS feed or active tasks (i.e. the PIM tasks) since there is currently no other way to get that on the 6.5 today screen.
so if i use pocketwit on my phone right an send twitts, itll be using my text messages??? i ask cause i dont have an unlimited text plan an dont wanna get burned aka screwed with a huge bill!!!

Not necessarily. I said it CAN be used in tandem with SMS, and it shares many similarities (limited character message size, etc), however that doesn't mean you get charged for each tweet.
I don't know anything about pocketwit, but it may use data instead of SMS.
Most people I know use standard SMS instead of data, especially if they don't own a smartphone.
While I would agree that a twitter plugin is a cool idea (if you sms a lot, your tweets could get lost in the crowd), there are other potential plugins as I already mentioned that currently have no alternative. If it were up to me, I'd like to see those come out first.

gotcha!! but off hand do you know if pocketwit uses data or sms???
PockeTwit uses data.
thanks for the guys who like my idea.. hope someone can compup with the acutal program XD
ye pocket twit is using data .. you can send tweets by email i believe but of cours that would still be data connection required
It should be possible to build a panel a bit like Shocos Weather panel which comes in two MortScript parts:
1. Settings, stores stuff in the registry like username, password and frequencies of updates, default Twitter app
2. The downloading of the tweet, shouldn't be too hard as it's pretty similar to the weather panel (might need a little work on the avatars), just need the RSS feed [although saying that, I'm not 100% sure you can get a password requested XML file with Mort, damm!].
The only thing that I can't see being possible is the update page, as I'm not aware of any input boxes on the tabs, instead you could have a page showing your status, with clicking on it bringing up a Mort prompt for the new status.

[JUST RELEASED] AppGroup Widget ! :)

Just released:

Hi everyone,
Take a look to this AppGroup Widget idea:

Do you think this is a cool way to group apps and present them in a nice looking widget?
The widget should be fully customizable:
- Stroke / outline color and size
- Group Title color
- Group background gradient color
- Widget background color / alpha transparency level
If possible, customizable number of apps in column, 4 or 5.
The widget should be available in different sizes:
4x3
4x2
4x1
2x2
2x4
1x4
The widget should function just to launch the app when the icon is pressed.
The "gear" icon in the top left is for widget settings (add / remove apps from group).
Now, to be honest, this is just an idea
I am not Android developer.
So, if you are a developer and would like to pick this for your project, please do so! If you think this is cool and add more "visual options" to our Android platform.
To be honest, I have not seen widget like this so far. Apologize if I am wrong.
But I am thinking this kind of visual grouping to easily distinguish between apps groups and quick access.
And to SHOW that Android can display apps in a UNIQUE compelling, nice looking way! Not just GRID of icons!!
What do you think? Any taker?
Please, before Apple/Microsoft took this idea for their next thingy!
Wow! I have been looking for a widget to do this exactly, too bad this is just an idea at the moment cause I think this is exactly what Sense needs to be complete atleast for my needs.
If we're throwing ideas around... what about collapsible groups or tabbed groups? Also rather than only support apps within, how about allowing any 1x1 app/shortcut/widget. Why stop at only allowing 1x1 children? (as long as I don't have to code it). Just random thoughts.
That requires extra click to launch the app?

Only when the group is already collapsed or hidden by another tab. The payoff is more virtual space to organise apps within. There's nothing new in the ideas as they're used extensively in desktop guis so the use cases are well established.
App Organizer is similar to this idea, but your idea seems better.
I would totally go for this!
Yeah, I have not seen this yet. It should bring more visual customization option for Android.
I would certainly buy this widget for sure !
Damn, I wish I know how to code on Android
I have contacted the Apps Organizer developer and see if he/she is interested in implementing this as feature or new product.
Looks like my earlier post didn't take...
The biggest hindrance of this is its inability to integrate with the normal home screen UI; Programs cannot be dragged into it, nor can a drag event be sent to the widget. All configuration would have to be done through a separate activity.
This will certainly get the widget downranked in the marketplace, but that shouldn't stop us.
I have made a few similar projects before that between them cover all the code for a basic group widget. I will play around with making a prototype, but no promises on release right now.
If the OP could post some image templates for the frame and header that would be helpful for future work, but for now the prototype will just be a solid background with icons.
A clueless question: would integration into Home be improved if this could be implemented as a live wallpaper rather than as a widget?
Its a very good idea, but again the drag action is claimed by the home app to pan the screen.
As a status update, I have ported the first gen app/shortcut icon code from my previous project to a clean object based method. I am now working on building a custom view to show the list and perhaps run drag/drop interactions for the config activity. By implementing it as a view, the code can be used in the widget and the activity with no need to maintain two copies of the same interface.
dev neeeeeeeeeeded
Got a working app centric custom grid view, but turns out that is completely useless, as Android is "too secure" to allow custom views in widgets.
Unfortunately, the only apparent way to do this as an actual widget is to make a grid entirely out of linear layouts (as grid layout is not supported for widgets), and use image buttons as the icons.
I will see how nice I can get it looking with linear layouts.
The supposed security of android is turning out to be a real hindrance; this isn't the first project I have taken on that had to be feature cut or abandoned because of it.
It's been released

(Sorry for my English. ) ...not been created yet, but i hope, someone can make it!
This is just some Idea and Animation with MS-Paint.
And again (just like i wrote in the german coop-forum ) i totally agree with this but am of the opinion, that the email-style would not be too productive/userfriendly. Some kind of Twitterlike layout with the channel-symbols at the side would work waaayyyy better
- There can be p.ex. only two feeds listed on one "email-paper" (and only in preview-form as well)
- What happens when you click on a paper (which feed/article gets opened?)?
I thought it could be like this (maybe with some more eyecandy ):
Channel-Symbols

Great Idea with the big Symbols. One Suggest for Handling is this:
1. There could be the latest Update of News showen in 3-Lines Text, so you can read-in and there is more than just Headlines. So there would be one Letter per one Update (and if no Updates are aviable, there will be no Letter).
- If there is A Video at one new Headline, or A Picture or Music-File, than you see just one Haedline per Paper-Sheet with A Thumbnail.
2. When you click at one Letter, A List with all Headlines could start - at the Position of the Date of the Update, you clicked at. If there are less than 4 Headlines, you see 1 complete opened and you scroll to the next by moving the Finger from right to the left, like at your Emails.
3. My aditional Idea is to put this together with you Email-Client, HTML-Client, Twitter, Facebook - so there would be one Symbol for each Componente. In Mail-Accounts you scroll like before, SMS the same, HTML: there you see Thumbnails of Favorites and last opened Sessions. In Twitter or Facebook, you see latest Updates on the Screen - aditional Options and Handling could be integrated in Menus or by starting the whole App. - There could also other Mailclients be integrated like Skype or iCQ with Symbols at the Sidebar.
-
Some other Option is, to put this Menu on the Screen with Icons for single Messenger-Apps in Lines,
just with the Numbers (for Updates) at the Bar downside. So Messaging+ Surfing Apps-, Cellphone-Apps and Tools-, Multimedia-Apps could be collected together (Photos, MP3, Youtube+ Videos), Explorer could be integrated at the Sense Homescreen (also with Icons in Lines, animated like that)
and be used for all Apps the same one (also rar-Zipp-App), And:
4. there could be some Manager for Programms and running Programms, running Status too (like Battery, Calendar, ...) at the Homescreen for Sense.
Collecting Things together would be good, because if there will be more Widgets for Sense, you have to scroll through 20 or more Icons! in one Line. - More than one Line with all this (Home, Email, SMS, Twitter, RSS, PDF, ......) sorted in Categories will be necessary. The Lines could be animated like Rings and with glowing-Effects.
With this, there would be integrated the Homescreen, the Explorer and Browser, the Taskbar and the Start-Screen with Programs, also the Settings-Screen.
This idea has been bought up so many times, but no one has developed it yet. I literally have been on the watch for 3 years for it. Seems like it gets mentioned then dies out like:

[Q] MIUI like dialer / lock screens

Hello my name is Suarezn and I'm a Flashoholic...S U A R E Z N...
All,
In an ideal world I could have my cake and eat it too. That means I would have a combination of Sense widgets (clock, weather, text to speech that works, 4G, etc) some AOSP features and some of the MIUI stuff (Theme manager, lock screens, visitor mode, etc). I was in MIUI, but it was so darn laggy on my phone that I ended up going back to a Froyo ROM (Koni's Elite) can't wait until these guys start making GB based roms.
Anyhow, since these guys don't all work together I want to know if I can replicate some of these features in my current ROM. Specifically I really like the MIUI dialer and Yes I've tried several other ones (Dialer one, Youlu, Go, etc) and they're all decent, but what I'm looking for is one that has the functionality the MIUI one has when you're in a call (it shows several buttons...Bluetooth, add a call, merge calls, etc) All the other ones default to the sense style while in-call which lacks those features.
Secondly any way to have a MIUI style lock screen with it's own wallpaper and the features to show unread messages, missed calls, double tap and you have the music controls available, etc...
...and does anyone else besides MIUI have the Visitor mode feature? This is cool I think cause you can lend your phone to someone and they can't change anything or see your calls and messages.
I know people say that they're different frameworks, but I think it is possible to port these features (i.e. the MIUI music player is now ported to all these other ROMs).
Will I ever be able to have everything I want in a ROM...I keep my fingers crossed.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
No miui features will ever be able to be used on any other rom until the source is released (p.s. will never happen) yea the framework is completely different but would be able to port with source...same reason u will never see sense Widgets on anything other than sense...
The reason for the miui music is (I'm not 100% but I'm pretty sure...) because the app was not built into the framework but just an app from the system/apps folder which can be.easily pulled...and thanks to the wonderful devs here got it working everywhere...I too wish for a sense.miui cyanogenmod mix but unfortantly without source..its like creating honeycomb aosp right NW...sry man

The OP was looking for suggestions on apps and widgets that would emulate of give the same purpose. The above reply was of very little help. I really cant say about the the dialer but have you tried using widget locker? I believe someone made a MIUI lockscreen for it and I know for a fact at least you can have a separate wallpaper screen by using that.
example here of lockscreen wall paper

I don't think he was looking for alternatives...based off his last few sentences abt the music player the op wanted exact ports from one rom to the other and all I said was.it wasn't possible

Things MIUI has that no other ROM has which is why I keep endng up back on it:
1. MIUI Launcher
2. By far the best dialer
3. By far the best native SMS (fully skin-able and tons of features)
4. Native usage monitor with throttling (disable data/text after x, solid history)
5. Native firewall app (that can block out/in by data type)
6. By far the coolest File Explorer (with built in wifi FTP, and indexed results)
7. Native backup/restore of apps and SMS
8. Native Theme system that includes launch screen
If those Chinese Devs would just man up and give us WiMAX this ROM would be without flaw. A man can dream ...

Yea I see your point on that one! I didn't read it all the way thru my fault it was like a total 180 from how it was at the beginning.
Sorry if I didn't explain myself correctly...im0rtalz is correct. I know you can't currently port any of this from MIUI to a sense based ROM for instance, so I was looking for alternatives (apps or whatever) that could replicate it. I played with widget locker and it does give me some of the same functionality (actually more than MIUI). It's not as polished, but I can live with that. Now I only need some way to replicate the dialer (in-call options). I wonder if the reason why this is not done is because Sense doesn't allow it...just curious because it just seems like something a lot of people would want. The ability to add a call, merge calls, bluetooth on/off, etc..I know you can press menu and sort of get to the same options, but it's so much nicer to just have them right there in front of you.
Justin: You're correct those are killer features that I'm surprised other ROMs don't incorporate. The theme manager rocks...plus the ROM just looks much cleaner and more polished than others IMO.
Anyhow any help would be appreciated.

WHAT'S NEW in 2.3.5. and Sense 3.0

Hello,
i found this new:
MESSAGING app - redesigned, changable text size, filter to see just one number history for contacts that have more numbers...
CALENDAR - more views..
MAIL - i dont like new look, i can see just 4 e-mails without scrooling
SCREEN LOCK - very cool
GALLERY app - a LOT faster
CAMERA APP - faster
WATCH app
TASK MANAGER app

Did you find something else? Impressions after update?
O RLY ?!
10 characters

Big Changes to HTC Weather App
Lots of new lock screens
Enable power efficiency is that new ?
New Connection Type Screen
Multimedia volume is much louder I have noticed. Just feels snappier overall.
You can resize the mails, go to settings and make the preview body lines or something like that none, also make text size smallest, now you can see 7 mails or so.
Mail sounds like a little scary for a user like me who use it a lot for daily work.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Just rebooted for the first time since the update
It plays a sound when its booting during the white screen with HTC quietly brilliant
Hopefully you can turn that off
First bug I've noticed is the second stage of the unlock screen when you draw a pattern to unlock the phone its not showing the background just a black screen, I'm sure it used to show the background image ? ?
Guys the Sense 3.0 has been out for a while. I think we all know the diffs. Nothing really new compared to the last 3 months.
zelendel there are lot users not as adventurous us, they stick to official updates without root and usually they stick around the general section
I was wondering if it is possible the home screen rotation as you can have with other launchers... I think this is the only thing missing
that's correct, i personally don't have time to play with ROMs and i need something stable and reliable as i use my phone for work generally.
and i know that there are a lot of others like me. i know u are all up to sense 4,0 and that this is old news for u i know this thread is funny for more "advanced" users but think it will be ok for us "inferior" users
@accesser - thanks for uploads and support
- we got officially screenshot feature (power button + home)
what do think of battery usage? i feel it lasts shorter, maybe cause i play with it more...
dhd - stock rom 2.3.5 sense 3.0
and my proximity sensor it's not working anymore. yey...

Really ? neat I had no idea I was using screen shot app I'll try now I knew Android 4 had built in screen shot but not this edition
When I install skins from market, it is not showed in personalize->skins. There are only 3 default skins for HTC Sense 3.0. I've tried download skins from HTC Hub and that works correctly with no problems.
And I found out that all of NON-HTC skins aren't showed in skins option. If I install skin from HTC Hub, everything is OK, but when I install any skin for example from Android Market it's not showing in skins menu.
Can anyone help me
You can't install 3rd party skins yet due to the m10 tools not being updated. I've been waiting a while...
There's also a swipe function built into the text app.
And I believe the pattern lock screen has always had a black background on stock roms.

Even sense 3.0 skins????!!!
Sent from my Desire HD
No. The recently released sense 3.0 roms for desire s and desire hd are a different resolution etc to the 3rd party made skins for sensation etc. Therefore they are not compatible and we have to wait for the m10 tools to be updated.

Not sure about the other stuff, but I can confirm that the pattern lock screen does not have a black background on my current (stock) rom. I haven't got the upgrade yet, so it still has the same background as the home screen.
