[FIX?] Getting back from International to US firmware - Vibrant General

And now in recovery I can't fix it because the power button isn't recognized in recovery...
I am new to adb as well but has anyone found info on unf'ing my phone? I have been googling like mad...
Oh, and this all happened because the phone doesn't see my sim card... huzzah for not reading everything before jumping into it...
EDIT:
So to prove I am retarded, to at least get the phone mostly back to working I went to the thread "what firmware for vibrant?" and downloaded the rom that MS_Guru posted, but now I get to the galaxy s logo, then screen goes black and buttons light up... still able to reboot with adb... but bah, this is getting annoying... this is why reading is good...

try this firmware.
http://www.multiupload.com/67TOPDHNHG
It's T959UVJE8.. I think it's an old firmware for Vibrant

Sadly that's what I tried when I thought I was getting somewhere but now my screen is blank (but my softkeys light up...)
So I load up odin3, pit is s1_odin_20100513.pit, pda T989UVJE8.tar and it goes through the motions and tells me everything went fine... phone boots up saying samsung vibrant, does the tmobile jingle and little load thing, does the galaxy s load... screen goes blank... if i click volume or power nothing happens, slide my finger over softkeys they light up...
Hey, at least if I return it like this it might be less obvious I was trying to hack it...

i work for tmo and that being said as long as you can at least get the keys to light up just bring it back and say it just rebooted and now its doing this.....
we dont check for rooting and would just exchange.

Yeah, reading is good and so is putting threads in the appropriate place. This doesn't belong in the development section, this belongs in the 'general' section.

Ouch... Yeah, like I mentioned, DON'T play with that firmware unless your ready to deal with a Really Really Pretty Paper weight. While that firmware does appear to be Vibrant firmware, I don't know who's had there grubby mits on it. I posted it because its one heck of a head start for anyone looking to develop the Vibrant ROM. I guess this makes for an expensive lesson learned. But honestly I wouldn't worry about it to much, I can't even brick this phone with my best efforts. And I get the feeling with everything thats now available to devs, someone will provide you with a solid fix. Probably not me at the moment though, as I'm still beating on this thing. LOL... I just had an AT&T ROM running on it. But it barfed all over that thing.

Yeah, after re-reading everything after taking a break and going to a friend's house (with G1 in hand, granted I love my G1, btu I want to be using my vibrant) I realized it look like you have been through a lot so I will adventure on my own and the forums... I doubt I even want to know all the details of what you have been doing... back to a lot of doing the same thing over and over again and swearing I guess...

@degeneration Ahhh... See that's where your mistaken. This is fun. I love pushin my toys til they break. And when they do, I fix them and go right back to it. I to have a G1, with some serious mileage on it. I was one of the first to own a "G1 Brick" during the whole Danger SPL thing. So the fact that its still alive means that yes, that bad boys on its second motherboard.

Well it would be more fun if I wasn't so excited about this phone to have it unusable so quickly... Back to normal would be great by now I can't even install update.zips... back to the old drawing board I guess...

This may be really stupid, but what would happen if someone installs a Galaxy S (the international version) firmware on the Vibrant?
I know the buttons are different (hm, is this why they are different)?

Well it's what I did, so it's at least somewhat stupid.
The problem I came across was that it would not accept my sim card so I couldn't use it as a cellphone.
Well that and the volume buttons get flipped, and there is no "select" button in the recovery mode.
I used the Russian version and it connected via wifi and switched my language to English, but I could not get it to find any networks. I tried a bunch of stuff, but I am definitely not the brightest.
And now that I got it back to the US firmware, I can't boot into the OS (although I can get to the vibrant system recovery and it acts like it is booting fine, it just isn't)

Since you are already in this, maybe try flashing some of the other Euro or Asian firmwares.
Some work better than others, like I9000XWJFF (it works best on my Galaxy S) -- a lot of the others don't get full Market access, it may be correspond to how the phone is seen by the network.

That was my thought, but now suddenly my computer refuses to see the phone... Well it sometimes sees it, but won't let me do anything to it, and usually I just get a whole new icon of a phone, 2 dots, a ! in a yellow triangle, 2 more dots, and a pc... I can get into the download screen but that's it... I have no idea what I did to make this worse, as far as I could tell the only thing that happened was I rebooted... hmmmm...

Hm, so you (1) start odin3, (2) then put the phone in Download mode, and (3) then plug it into the PC?
Does odin3 show anything after you plug in the phone?
If it doesn't, maybe try uninstalling the phone's driver from the PC, then plug it in and windows should install new driver. Then unplug it, go to the Download screen, start odin3, plug in the phone into the PC....

Bah... I don't know if I was being dumb, or it was coincidence but I don't care, I got odin to see the phone finally.
However windows has trouble when I plug it in telling me it failed to install the device, and when I go to flash it odin3 does nothing.
Well actually, it does this
Code:
<ID:0/004> Added!!
<ID:0/004> Odin v.3 engine (ID:4)..
<ID:0/004> File analysis..
<ID:0/004> Get PIT for mapping..
<ID:0/004> Firmware update start..
<ID:0/004> factoryfs.rfs
And then does nothing... no bars light up, phone or laptop...
Considering the com wasn't 4 when this was working previously, I am going to try different USB ports I suppose... Although windows not successfully recognizing it anymore has me worried... full reboot and trying this again...
EDIT: Maybe I spoke to soon. I reboot windows (phone completely disconnected, battery out even) and as it boots up it tells me my device was not installed properly... I have no idea what apparently changed... so that's confusing as all hell... whatever...

Yeah, it's done this to me at times. Flash again.
Also, what .pit file are you using? the one that ends on 13 doesn't work with the G5 firmware, and will prevent the phone from fully starting. Try using the s1_odin_20100512 file from the SGS forum.
Good luck.

Did you ever know that you're my hero?
It is flashing at the moment, so at least that's a step in the right direction... I also found this thread
http://ip208-100-42-21.static.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7192637
which has that pit file and info on that weird icon I was seeing. Just incase someone else gets stuck like me... Wow... after reflashing with that pit file windows sees the phone again...
EDIT: Yup, back to where I was, but now I can try new foreign roms to see if I can have a phone until a good US one is available...
EDIT 2: So I am now on JG5... the device works, but not as a phone. The sim card is still not visible to the phone (and just to be clear, and works just dandy in my G1 still) but everything else pretty much works... Besides the fact that I can't do a flash except through odin3 since there is no home button on my device to do things in the recovery menu (makes me miss flashing my g1 with the shortcut keys )
I still might call radioshack to see if they will/can exchange the phone even though I ordered it online...

I am starting this post early... which means I am going to be kicking myself, but I think I did it!
HOLY CRAP I DID!
Give them enough tries and even a retard can do something right once in a while I guess...
So I used 512 pit. t898uvje8 PDA. Didn't flash phone (as I noticed the PDA seems to have a modem.bin in it). and did JG5 (or, it's labeled JG4 but comes with JG5) CSC.
Now my phone is back to running like a vibrant, and I am back on edge at least... I am getting TERRIBLE reception though, but at least I am getting reception...
Actually, it's just my standard steel roof bad reception, I got it up to 3g... so it seems like things are working... signed into google... I can get into the market... downloading an app... now I think I will just try to flash that dump that is floating around here and see if I can get sims back (I don't know why... I just need to torture myself more I guess)
EDIT: Oh yeah, and when booting like this, email force closes twice and then anytime you try to open it... but gmail ends up working fine

Glad you got it working
Use K-9 for email client - I like it better than what comes with the the Galaxy S anyway.
But with the JG5, do you get full Market access? Search for Wounderradio and see if it shows up -- if it doesn't, you don't.

Doesn't look like I do... but I seem to have enough of the market that I might hold off messing with it more until I have nothing to do for a whole day. Or heck I will just download stuff from the net
I am timid at the moment to go flashing it anymore than I already have as I didn't even get sufficient time to show it off!
But thanks for pointing that out, I will have to figure that out eventually (or wait for someone else to do the hard work and make a good stable rom to flash)...
Can anyone indulge my newbness and tell me what the CSC file even is? I am guessing PDA is pretty much the OS, and MODEM is the radio... but I am probably wrong about that too...

So. I take it there is no way to unbrick this...

I was on the phone with T-Mobile and the woman on the other end either had no idea what I was talking about or, she really did. Her probing questions were perfect and she understood everything I was saying...but the only thing she could think of doing was stripping down the phone, have just the battery, and then press and hold VOL UP+DOWN and Power till the Samsung Vibrant screen came on.
I would have a picture for you, but looks like the forum doesn't allow 'new' members to post. Too bad lurker time can;t be counted toward any of it.
Anyway, the best description of what on my screen:
It has a cellphone on the left, a computer on the right, connecting dots and an orange triangle with an exclamation point. It's all int he middle of the screen.
Best part of this is: I did nothing to the phone. i only downloaded some games and a backup program I can't remember the name. Phone was still locked. I'm not venturing into doing anything like that till i have the money to buy another in a worst case scenario.
So...any ideas?
Add insurance in case you mess anything up. You have 14 days...
That doesn't sound like it's bricked but you didn't tell us anything...
That's the recovery screen, but I'm not sure what you are trying to accomplish...
try to reboot the phone into recovery mode and wipe the phone.
I've tried rebooting to recovery mode.
As for not telling the forum anythng; I'm sorry. I left one detail out:
I downloaded a free application, it's a backup program. I don't remember the name of it (this is my first droid phone, big step up from your standard flip phone with a 6 color screen). I left it running a backup of all the photos and 3gp videos I put on the SD card. Fell asleep, woke up 6 hours later....
BOOM.
I did tell you everything, as in I have no desire to hack/crack/jailbreak/spook/circumvent/customer-os/firmware-flash this phone. I only wanted to charge it after playing with it for a while.
I've tried several of the volume button and power button resets, with/without SD card and SIM. I even tried doing it without the battery in the phone plugged into the USB port.
6 hours of internet browseing and reading and trying these different things, and still nowhere close to an answer form T-Mobile than I need the phone replaced.
I can't easily do it, because I have to send the phone in, wait for a 'credit' to hit my account and order another phone, all the while my service is going to stay active because I am on a Flexpay account.
I love the phone. But it's this kind of thing that has made e stay with your standard, low-tech flip phone from Tracfone. This wouldn't be such a big headache of the cellular antenna in that Tracfone was working. It's lasted me almost 4 years.
Anyway. Is there a program that forces a connection to the phone, kinda says "HEY! you are connected to a computer, now do your stuff!"??
Is there a button combination to make it look for a recovery image ont he SD card like when I would flash my OLD Dell Axim X50??? Noone seems to know alot about this phone yet.

Sounds like you were in some sort of recovery mode. That more closely resembles the default Android recovery.
Nope.
It has a white icon of a cellphone pn the left, 2 dots, a orange triangle with an exclamation point, 2 dots and another icon that kinda looks like a computer.
Breaking forum rules, but whatever:
http // img231.imageshack.us/ img231 / 1830/ 0720000800.jpg
YAY! It worked. Just add a colon after http and get rid of the spaces.
Of course you know that if this we're happening to you on postpaid, they'd swap your phones out with no inbetween phone time. Your local T-Mobile store might also have loaner phone for you.
probably a cheap flip phone. I was forced to get Flexpay. I guess the last 7 years f ontime, in-full payments to anything hasn't fixed my credit at all. That would explain Verizon's want of a $400 security deposit.
So... I've been doing some research. If Odin can be used to reflash the stock firmwares onto the phone...and if this phone uses an SD card (only say this because windows recognized the internal storage as an SD card) and if one of the other Samsung Android phones when taken apart , had a SD slot for the internal storage (looks like you can actually easily replace the SD card) then what if I took apart the phone, removed the SD card and formated and partitioned it on my computer through my card reader...
These are all just educated guesses. I mean... it looks like my phone has no idea what to do because maybe the SD card is bad or something, unbeknownst to me, reformatted the card improperly.
I posed this same question to Samsung and have yet to hear from them.
What do you guys think? Anyone actually crack open their phones yet?
It seems to me that your options are limited.
I'd say you should root it and see if that gives you more options, but I don't know how feasible that will be for you to do at present.
Can't root a phone that's not booting up to recovery or being seen by a computer
Just received info from Samsung:
Yeah, it looks like the phone needs to be re-flashed or replaced. Head to your local T-Mobile Store or call them up."
So Samsung isn't willing to let go of any other information on this or even extrapolate on the idea of reflashing.
Again, it looks like there is no internal storage with a bootloader to tell the phone what to do.
i see 1 solution
when i bought my vibrant they told me i have 14 days to return or exchange the phone if there is any issues with it the phone came out on the 15th i think so you still have 6 days to take it in show them the problem and they can swap you out with a new vibrant
bricked my g1
When i got my first g1, I rooted it and tried to flash a rom. I bricked it! I called Tmo,I said it froze and wouldn't boot up. They walked me through troubleshooting(of course nothing worked) and said it was software and sent me a brand new one it was only 2 wks old. Maybe an idea for ya.
If you are with in your return period(30 days California, 14 everywhere else) I would take it back and get a new one instead of trying to fix it.
Why trying to fix it yourself? Bring it back to a t-mobile store and exchange for a new one.

I've bricked my G1 few times. t-mobile has always exchange it for me during the first year.
i know what your phone has theres a cure but you will most likely have to root it then return it back to stock look under the ms guru section for returning your phone to stock it should help you but then you need to do a restore with the nandroid backup to be completely stock. you'll have to put your phone into download mode hold both volume buttons and power let it do the vibrant screen twice then let go of power and still hold the volume buttons you should be in download mode proceed with the other things from there meaning ms guru and using odin
If you are having the problem I think you are, you should be able, if the software is compatible with Vibrant because I don't know if it is, to restore it with the Odin software or at least thorough a far more complicated process using adb. Check this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989, and see if you are having a similar problem.

I wanted to let you know I had this same issue and I was still able to get into download mode with the same method described in the earlier post:
1:with phone off hold down volume up and volume down buttons- keeps buttons held
2ress and hold power on button
3:when the screen with the computer and cellphone on it appear for the second time wait for it to disappear
4:when it disappears wait for 1 second a let only power button go and you will be in download mode(android with shovel\big yellow triangle) and you can flash with Odin.
I tried this 5 or 6 times before I got it right but in the end I was able to get back to stock ROM and phone was brand new. Hope this helps.

But you can always ODIN rite?

[Q] Real simple. Cash offer to walk me through it by phone or email.

Offer:
I've got a $30.00 PayPal for someone with decent rep here to walk me through the update.
History: This is a new virgin phone, exchanged today. (Sun) The OTA killed my previous phone and I was unable, for whatever reason, to restore nandroid, backup, nada. Until this morning, that was the best phone I've ever had because of this forum and esp the Tips & Tricks thread.
It had: Root, Rom Manager, Titanium Backup, Ryan's OCLF, Autostarts, and MOBILE AP wireless tethering app. (This one is a must for me.)
What I want:
I want the JI6 update installed and the above programs re-installed per the Tips thread... In whatever order you think is best. We verify these things work and I send money immediately. My word is good. (I can re-install my 40 odd apps afterward on my own time.
Background:
I have followed the Tips thread instructions for ODIN. (Open ODIN, press vol up & dn, plug in wire, see COM msg in box, (debug on) mount phone, Pit>...512, PDA>...JI6, START. ..... Nothing! 2 seconds later the message box says something like {All threads complete. 0 succeeded, 0 failed>}
Bottom line:
I've read posts for hours but since I don't really know what I'm doing well, I am also unable to sift through all the advice figuring out which poster's setup is like mine. At this point, I just want it done right.
I will edit this post when it's done. Thanks for reading.

I'm in the same boat, as far as trying to use Odin. Broken phone, nothing working for me.
So, you took your phone to the store, told them you applied the update and now you're stuck on the vibrant screen, and they just gave you a new one right then and there?
you can drop me a pm and i can try and get you through it. Wont take your money though. Make sure you have odin 1.3 downloaded and the odin flash file for JI6 downloaded. If you can get adb working you get bonus points.
Are you hardware locked? if so you need to download the patch for it also found on here. If not should be easy to get ya up and running with the above mentioned things in place.
If I went to fast or confused you just say so in the pm and we can go as slow or as fast as you need.

I gave up on unbricking.
No Trunk, It was more of an escalation from a gentle request (at which point they told me "2 weeks & we'll mail it to ya' ".) through several layers of increasing... uhhh... 'amplitude', ("Okay, We'll do priority mail; 3 or 4 days.") culminating in chaining the duct taped Tmo rep's feet to the back of my hog for a quick ride up the street. ("I think we have one in the back, let me check...")
Cyber, your posted phone 'resume' sig is the scariest thing I've ever seen. (Except for my ex.) Does that thing have photon torpedoes too? Krap!
Okay, just kidding 'bout all that. Thank you guys for responding. Will send PMs tomorrow. (1 more brick & I'm gonna need mortar...) About 3-4 pm pacific time. Again, thanks.
I had root but no roms, no adb, no hardware unlock. I'm not a sophisticated power user. I loved it the way it was, except for the GPS/compass thing. It was fast (with the lagfix) and tethered wirelessly & easy w/ the Mobile AP, & I had some control over the running programs.
phone power off. (remove battery if you think it will help)
ok had my phone brick today took about an hour of googling, reading, downloading etc to get it to work again
Load odin
plug phone into USB (power off mind you) press and hold both volume keys at once, plug into PC, this "should boot you into download mode ( android guy with shovel screens says DOWNLOADING! once it loads into download mode you should see some Com info at the top left of odin, thats your cue to load the PDA and PIt file. check PDA box press start, and wait, installation should take about 5 mins
I was in motion with ODIN finally, when I accidentally pulled the USB cord out of my laptop. Now, all I get when trying to get in download mode is a graphic of a phone, a yellow triangle with exclamation mark, and a computer.
Holy crap this is a learning experience. Anyone know what do do?

I was in motion with ODIN finally, when I accidentally pulled the USB cord out of my laptop. Now, all I get when trying to get in download mode is a graphic of a phone, a yellow triangle with exclamation mark, and a computer.
Holy crap this is a learning experience. Anyone know what do do?

Ok here is your next step by step. First take a deep breath you CAN definitely recover this....
you need to hold down the up/down volume and the power button. The yellow triangle image will go dark and come back. You need to wait till after it goes dark twice then when the image shows up for the third time release the volume side. wait about 5 seconds and release the power. Should jump you back into download so make sure your odin is up and ready

Awesome. Thank you so much. What a debacle. I'm stock again. Or at least, it looks like stock again. Now, to get the OTA update and hopefully this time it won't break my phone. I have no idea why it broke the last time I tried it.
My phone was so personalized before, I feel lost, like this is someone else's phone.
Stupid question... Why not just odin the official JI6 file that's posted and be done with it. Even better forget the JI6 and look at one of the awesome roms by eugene or bionix as they both use JI6 as their base?
Dude....where in OC are ya ?
I'm in Seal Beach,if you don't get it fixed before your stated 4pm pst time...gimme a holler and I'll even bring my laptop and cable.

Not sure if that was for me or not, but I don't even know what JI6 is... flashing stock was the first time I ever Odin'd anything before.
I don't have much of a rep here, but here's how I did things. I installed OCLF from the market, and rooted (and only rooted). Then I installed ROM manager and did a nandroid (and I did one after each change I made to my phone as well). Then I updated to JI6 through odin. After that, I gave myself MobileAP. Then (because I was hardware locked), I used odin to fix that. As far as I know, you can install everything else you got from the market from there (all root apps not already installed included). I can't really tell you how that lag fix from OCLF works with JI6, as I never actually used that part of the app (I only used it to root).
As a side note, you may get an error with odin if you aren't in download mode (but you may still get a com message). For a sure fire way to get into download mode, open odin, and then plug in your phone (completely booted). Use the adb command "adb reboot download" and you'll be in download mode and ready to use odin. Also, if you mess up, as long as you can get into download mode, you can use odin to flash back to how your phone originally shipped.
Update
Hey guys,
I HAVE JI6!!!
I'm the OP & I just logged on to send the PMs to be rescued. I saw the mini-kies method of installing JI6, tried it, and it worked. I'm re-rooted, oclf'ed, clockworked, & have re-installed many apps.
The MOBILE AP seems to be my last major hurdle. I forgot how I did it last time but it worked great! Now the instructions I think are different??? I don't remember any "flashing" with CW though. I've never flashed anything. I've read every post HERE but I'm gunshy now. Is there a "for dummies" way to do this?
Also, I have lost my Haptic feedback. It seems to be set correctly, but it's just not there. Even when I adjust the intensity up to full, nada. It may have happened after the OCLF install, or playing with Swype, not 100% sure. It definatelt was working an hour ago... Any ideas on this? Thanks.
Thanks for the "PM me" responses. You guys are slowly curing my ignorance. (very slowly...)
Member character...
Yep. The Brickmaster is back. After a 3 day long recovery process from a new phone, I had somehow done it again...
This is to say thanks to the multiple members who offered personal help but in particular, to the one who gave it. After a PM, this man called me back and for 2 straight hours on a Friday night, with no request for, or guarantee of payment, patiently led me through the technicalities of an Odin recovery. Somehow, he fixed my phone. And I got a little more education.
During the course of this call, it turned out he is an Iraq war veteran with a new baby who is re-enlisting in the military to serve his country even more! Thank you so much for your help, and my gratitude for your service to our country.
.................................................................................................
As for me, being a natural born electronics genius is rough. Last night I elevated the art of brickification to a new high. (2 clicks gentlemen. Beat that!!!) The poison pill was OCLF, then Voodoo, BTW.
Oh yeah, PS... If anyone needs their phone converted into a shiny black paperweight, get in touch. I'm among the best out there.

[Q] Advise if I have a brick on hand

I wanted to ask the experts here before I move forward on getting another phone.
This was a retarded move on my part but I installed a T-mobile Vibrant froyo 2.2 onto my Verizon Fascinate... (I know, you're wondering how this could have happened.. it had to do with a un-helpful friends advice/assistance.)
I used a little package deal of files installed through Odin.
Eugene_2E_JK2_Froyo.tar.md5
s1_odin_20100512.pit
Warning stated: THIS WILL WIPE ANY DATA ON YOUR DEVICE, IT WILL REPLACE YOUR BASEBAND, KERNEL, RECOVERY AND OS.
The phone starts up fine and I can get apps and surf on my wireless without issue.
The problems which lead me to believe my phone is bricked from ever going back to Verizon fascinate froyos rom is a few major issues.
1.) If the phone is powered on, anytime I plug in the USB cable to the PC or charger, the phone goes black and the power turns off. I cannot get the phone to turn on at all with the USB cable plugged in.
2.) The phone will not go into download (triangle) mode regardless of the button combos pressed.
3.) I tried to use the rom installer on the clockwork app but when the phone reboots it gets stuck at startup in the system recovery. The volume buttons will not allow me to select anything.

Well, if everyone determines the phone is bricked.. give me some ideas on how to swap it out for a replacement. This one is a VZW certified-preowned phone. 14 day return policy which I just got it. If a rep was to turn it on, they will see it says T-mobile Vibrant! ouch..
That pit file looks a lot like a Vibrant Odin file.....you should reflash Odin with some DL09 Odin files. I think you can save your phone at this point.
Edit: didn't see that you can't access download mode. Thats a problem.

Just to verify..when you try to go into download mode you have your battery out of the phone and you plug the usb cable into your phone while holding volume down right?
SCH-I500 - Froyo DL30/Matted Bluebread
if our button combo for download mode doesnt work, I would look into what you have to do for the vibrant, since you flashed their kernel it might respond to whatever you have to press for that.
Vibrant download mode - plug in USB, hold vol up + vol down and press power
http://www.ithinkdiff.com/how-to-access-download-and-recovery-mode-in-samsung-vibrant/
can you put our CWM as update.zip on there and have it load that? If you can get in CWM there is a download mode boot.
Just thinking out loud of ideas, even if its far off, its something to try before having to pay $500
Good call. Hopefully you can get your phone into download mode brother. Wondering if maybe there is an app to reboot into download mode. I know before we had power options I had used anreboot to reboot into recovery but idk about download mode. also I wonder if you'll need different drivers or if the fascinate drivers will work (I've forgotten if they are general galaxy s drivers or application specific)

Well you flashed Vibrant to the phone...vibrant has to have their item way to flash...like software such as Odin....possibly get the software compatible for Vibrant....read up on how to get to that software download mode....and flash back to DL09?????????

Good news and bad news. My phone work was cut short due to the battery dying. Remember how I mentioned when the USB is plugged in the phone turns off? Well it also prevents the phone from charging. It went from soft brick to true BRICK! Can we coin that term? True brick haha
With that being said, I can send it back under warranty and get a replacement since it will not turn on or charge and has no water damage.
BUT before I do this, I will give the phone to my EXPERIENCED friend who I should have spoke to from the start. He owns a vibrant running froyo 2.2 with a 2.3 visual overlay. His battery should swap with mine. He will give it a good comb over to make a last ditch effort before I call it in. I do hope we can revert it back for my sake but also to share this info with all of you.
Have you attempted to use a USB jig to get into download mode? That method is usually foolproof, from what I've heard. You can either buy one for a few bucks, or there's also video instructions available on how to make your own.
THAT is a great idea about using the USB jig. I see the tutorial on xda to make one. Talk about going the distance to recover a brick, that's awesome! I'll see if I can manage to incorporate this.
Good luck man!
Gotta love friends advice!! I would bet it was expecting the button configuration for the vibrant to go into download mode. Although it wasnt the best idea I doubt its really bricked. Good Luck!!

this is probably your best option, though I have not used it myself.

Report is in. It's bricked or at least bricked beyond our abilities to fix it.
The reason the phone cannot be fixed is because the volume buttons do not work in the samsung recovery utilities screen. Which means you are unable to select the different options to reinstall package etc.
The second issue is due to the USB software and charging parameters of the phone being changed, it cuts the phone power off anytime a USB cable is connected regardless of JIG or not. My friend explained it turns the phone power off to protect the battery from overcharging. The battery on the vibrant and fascinate do work when plugged into each phone but they are different and charge differently. The fascinate battery will not charge when plugged into a vibrant phone.
A verizon agent explained (off the record) if you take the phone into a local shop they WILL send you packing because they'll know you messed it up. If you send it in, they'll still know you messed it up but as long as there is no physical damage or water damage, the phone gets sent back to samsung which in turn satisfies verizon on their end. This in turn gets you a no charge replacement depending on your phone still being in warranty range. This is what I've been told but as you know in life, there is no guarantees.
Most importantly, thank you again for everyones suggestions and input!! When I get a replacement I will have to get someone to baby me through the root process and DL30 install
You are welcome brother. Glad you can at least get a new phone!

Once again: Noob bricked his new phone..

Sorry to annoy you guys with the same things over and over again. Me - used to flash and customize WM devices quite alot - was a bit to fast with Android I guess.
Had Samsung with stock firmware (about 3-4 months ago, cant tell more).
Wanted to start getting into flashing new Roms, so tried to flash semphore kernel first (Yes.. i know now..).
Went trough somehow anyways, Odin gave green light, I disconnected from USB.
But instead of device booting into somethin I got the white I9100 letters and a big "!" sign below.
(Guess I know now why..)
So.. i tried to flash again with repartition on. I left it running for about 45 minutes, but nothing was happening. Red some posts - guess the wrong ones - that told me if it is stuck for that long you should disconnect, remove bat, retry. Did so, and to my shock odin suddenly replied with:
<ID:0/003> Re-Partition operation failed.
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)
<ID:0/003> Removed!!
I should have listended... " DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!" And read more before I try. I know. Now its not even powering on - guess this means some serious money I gotta pay for repair? Or is there anything left I could try???
Sorry for the noob action....
Is that a kernel for a different phone by any chance (i.e. Samsung Galaxy S)?
Try getting into download mode from the phone, volume down, home button and power button, press all 3, and report back.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
The ! sign is normal. its just there to tell that you are using an unofficial kernel. the repartition is the reason why your device is bricked. Never tick that one
First off all you don't need to repartition when only flashing a kernel.
If you are able to boot in download-mode
You can flash a stock firmware from http://www.sammobile.com and everything should be okay again
And semaphore is not for the S II

No way to get into download mode.. no battery sign on charge, just black.
So guess there is no way out if it? I red about a special usb cable you can solder yourself, I would not mind doing so... But the pure black on the phones display tells me somehow this time it went worst case... hit me!!!
What would you tell em if you bring it back? I only have it 3 months, kept in case, looks brandnew, guess I still get some good service.
Tell them it got stuck on Kies Update?
Tell them it simply turned off and stayed?
Any other ideas?
Guess telling them "tried to flash wrong, unofficial firmware, then re-partioned and plugged off to early" wont help much to get the repair for free.
I can only hope I bricked it that bad that they cant revive and think its a hardware problem.
Buy a JIG on e-bay for a few bucks

They'll tell you to pound sand if you try to get it warrantied; it will cost you money to get it fixed. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you have to pay to play.
Order a USB jig, it MIGHT help you get into DL mode.

Potentially yes.
Maybe you are lucky and they would accept it when you say kies messed it up.
But i think you don't have bricked it
... If i got it right you just flashed a kernel from a wrong device, right? this means your bootloader is still intact... So no need to worry, your second flash didn't even start according to the odin log you posted.
Here a few things you can try:
1. Maybe your battery is empty because if the long time in download mode (it doesn't get charged there) -> either charge it with some cheap exterenal charger or find someone who borrows his
2. If you have ensured your battery isn't empty, take it out, wait a few minutes and insert it WHILE you hold three button combo for download mode (needs some acrobatic skills ) hold it a bit to see what happens (can be up to 10sec.), if you are in download mode make sure to flash a fw with three files plus re partition with pit!!!
3. If this gets stuck again try to flash just a pit file and nothing else, this will erase every single partition and then repeat step 2
4. Buy a jig for 5 bucks on ebay or amazon (or do it yourself as you said)
A jig will be your last resort but to 99% you will be successful with it. As i said because your bootloader is still intact.
And take care to use only files for i9100 this time

Most off the time it does! But sometimes it doesn't.
But it costs a lot less when you need to repair it by samsung or service store ect.

Invest in a Jig. They cost <$3 on ebay or you can make one yourself just youtube

Ive had my phone brick on me SOOOO MANY TIMES but ive always managed to revive it. Belive me and anyone else who says "get a JIG".....GET ONE! Better <$3 jib that saves your phone or spend another X amount on a repair/new phone
You guys give me hope. Thx!
I ordered a Jig from ebay yesterday already. (7 € but fast delivery).
I can´t believe the battery was empty, I had it on about 80 % when starting odin
with "repartition" on. And it was showing the "do not disconnect message" on screen
when I plugged it off, which did not dissapear. Then I turned it off, removed battery, instantly after that it was only giving me black.
So I guess it was in the middle of repartitioning.. I really did not expect it to take THAT long, at least not after the first flashing went trough in about 10 seconds. Dunno what this means exactly, does this hurt the bootloader itself? I thought (...) it was only the userfile space / system space.
And sure, I will try each and every trick before I send it in and tell it was evil, evil kies.
Cause IF they are able to revive, they will instantly see on the counter that I did mess with it.
Lets hope I dont pay to much for my little playing - actually I just wanted all functions I bought the phone for to work.... get rid of the beta they sold with it..

I will heed this warning, and keep reading. For now, I can only say that I hope it works.
How you doin'? Greetings from my GT-I9000!
You flashed a kernel from the galaxy s instead of the s2. Did you use the ops file for the s also? I've read that using a wrong ops file is bad..... Anyone else here that maybe knows a bit more, does this file contain the partition layouts for the phone?

[Q] How to access files on damaged Razr M

I have a Razr M with a broken screen. The damage is to the upper left hand corner. The phone actually worked for several days like this, then just stopped. I can not tell what mode it's in or anything at this point. When I plug it in to charge, the green LED lights for a few seconds then goes out. Not sure if this is normal, as this was my sons phone and I never used it. Of course my son doesn't know either. Go figure. The phone was in an Otterbox (Defender Series) when it experianced a crushing force....
The issue is that I need to get his personal info and pictures off the phone before we send it back. (We had insurance).
So the question is:
How can I tell if the phone turned on. (We've pressed so many buttons etc...)
Is there a way to reset the phone to restart, so we can be sure it's on.
How can I access the files? (Is there a keystroke to power it up in USB mode?
The phone is the Razr M (XT907) from Verizon. I have down loaded and installed the motorola drivers on my PC, but no luck there. I'm no expert, but the damage seems really limited to the upper left hand corner, front and back side. I have watched several Youtube video's and don't believe anything super critial is located there, just the rear speaker on back and LED on front. The glass has broken (cracked) further down a bit, and I can see inside the phone just a little. The inner structure (plastic with the LED inside for thoise famliar with the insides) is mint.
ANY help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Thats what i thought. It seems to me that the glass/ touchscreen is all thats damaged. Unfortunatly this phone was never hooked to a PC in it's short 3 month life. I don't know if it's even set up for USB or what the default settings are.
I do know my son had a pattern lock screen. I wonder if this affects it's ability to connect via USB assuming it's on and powered up.

I did this and still nothing. My PC acts like it's not even there. I just get the green light for few seconds then nothing. The phone should be charged as I left it all night on the charger, but I plugged it in for about 30 minutes then unplugged and tried this. Nothing. Odd how it was working just fine 2 days ago with the same damage. Of course two days ago my son didn't ask me to back anything up either. Lesson learned I guess.
This was one reason I didn't like this phone. If my phone locks up, I can pull the battery. Then I KNOW its off. I can't tell what state this phone is in or even if I can shut it down or access anything with damged screen being blank. If the above method should force it to pop up as a USB drive, then I'm afraid something else has fried. I have until tommorrow or so to try anything else.

If the above method should force it to pop up as a USB drive, then I'm afraid something else has fried. I have until tommorrow or so to try anything else.

This might go without saying, but just in case... you need to make sure you have Motorola's device drivers installed on your computer. You can find them here: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/prod_answer_detail/a_id/89608/p/30,6720,8577

Yep, did that first thing last night.
I don't believe the phone is set up for USB, of course I cant access it now..
I believe the PC driver software installed OK.
If the PC doesn't recognize it, you're not even booting. If it wasn't set up for USB, the computer would see it but not be able to access anything. Odd, because you should be able to.
So what happened before it went dead? Did you leave it on and let it go dead?
If not, your circuit board may be broken, in which case you're SOL

Thank you!

here's a shot in the dark:
there is an app called "Plan B" on the google play store. the app was designed for folks to install it on their device AFTER the phone went missing (this is assuming, of course, that the phone is turned on and is able to send/receive data). from this app, I think you can back up your contacts, pictures, etc. so, see if you can turn the phone on (you should see the green LED light up) by pressing and holding the power button for 3 seconds. then, via your PC, go to the google play store (sign into whose ever account was setup with google), and install Plan B (or lookout). I think google device manager may do the same thing, but that could require you to go into the phone and adjust the settings.
going forward, I would advise folks to use google as their ONLY source for contacts - that way, when they change phones, reset devices, flash, etc., all of that information will download automatically.
regarding pics/vids, I would suggest to make sure that folks set their camera to save to the external SD card - that way, all you need to do is pop out the sd card, and all of them will be saved there. or, you can upload them to picasa web album (google's online photo/video storage).
hope this helps, and good luck.

Don't know. It's my sons phone, I knew it was broken, but I also saw that it was working. He never mentionad a word about storing stuffon his internal memory as opposed to the SD card. It was only after it stopped working did he say anything about it.
I'm real curiuous now, had he had extremely private info on there, passwords to bank accounts, credit card info etc... how would aperson be sure when you send a phone back it doesn't get recyled, repaired? I know they would wipe it clean, but I also know for a fact that anyone in this type of industry will look around first before wipingh it. Do bad I cant destroy the phone further to avoid it being even considered for repair and not just the incinerator. :silly:

That shouldn't be an issue. Assuming they can get it booted, they'll probably go to recovery to check for root. They don't need to boot it all the way. Chances are the insides of the phone might be reused, but there's not much that you can do about that unless you want to just buy a new one...

i really would not worry about that. my banking app does not store my password on it, and this phone is not compatible with google wallet. also, when they get these devices, the first thing they do (I would imagine) is to do a complete factory reset. given that the phone is damaged, there is really nothing that they can do.
a new thought though - I think there is an app called airdroid that allows you to view your phone's screen on your computer. see if that works.
