I was at the car stereo place and found nearly every headunit with a USB port in the front saying that it is compatible with an iPod or iPhone. Question is, have any of you guys tried hooking it up to a Android device? Does it charge? Will it fry my cellphone? I'm leaning towards a Kenwood headunit but just wondering if there are any precautions. Thank you

You should be fine. I doubt it would damage the phone as most smart phones have similar power requirements/charging methods these days. The iPhone's cables are just normal USB cables with a special plug on one end and an Apple logo so they can charge more. Most things labelled "For iPhone/iPod" work just fine on Android devices.
Anyone with a USB port on their headunit using a Android phone?
My Honda has a USB port for the stereo. It does not allow the me to use the phone to control audio through USB as this is not supported like it is on iPod (same with any Android phone, has nothing to do with Nexus S in particular) but it does work in Mass Storage Mode and allows me to control audio through the head unit.
All of this is moot anyway as the best solution is to use a car mount and connect through the 3.5m stereo out to the AUX input. I can then not only use Last.fm and Navigation sounds through the stereo, but also phone call audio gets passed through. It's pretty much awesome and makes me glad I did not spend the extra $1200 on the in dash GPS/touchscreen head unit with bluetooth.
hey guys
I have a car stereo where it has a usb cable connection, I used to connect all my phones using the usb cable to the car stereo to play music ( xperia play and iphone). But Gnote does not connect to the car stereo usb and can't find the music folder, anyone can please help in this
Hi Guys,
i want to stream spotify to my car stereo. My car is a 2011 Suzuki Swift and the only connection is USB so i connected my phone and put it in MTP. The car stereo displays "unsupported device".
As far as i know it doesn¨t work because the S4 does not support usb Mass Storage anymore.
Is there any way to get this working? I really like the S4 and buying a new car also isn¨t an option
Buy a new radio for the car that supports bluetooth music. That works great.
If that isn't an option buy an fm transmitter that plugs into your phone. The quality isn't great depending on how dense the radio signals are in your area, but it'll work.
So there is no other option?
I can¨t replace the head unit and a FM transmitter would be just another dongle in the car...
Well how about a usb stick for your music? They make large capacity ones really tiny now. You wont even notice it on the dashboard
That would be the same thing as plugging your phone in if the car is just trying to access your phone as a mass storage device. The car will just see your phone as a usb drive anyway, so just get a usb drive that you don't have to plug in each time you get in the car.
I have a Nexus 7 (2012) that I want to do a dash install with. I would like to retain my head unit (already relocated) for audio, and I have a few questions.
I mainly want the following features:
-USB Tether
-Bluetooth OBD
-Airstream (or otherwise) phone calls from iPhone through Nexus
-WIFI backup camera
-Bluetooth keyboard?
From what I've been reading it appears Timur's ROM is the way to start. It looks like with an OTG cable and a usb hub I can easily do usb tether.
I have a bluetooth keyboard that has its own USB dongle, I'm wondering if with that dongle I can be connected to the keyboard and the obd transmitter simultaneously
I saw an app that was available years ago to support airstream, but it seems to have disappeared. Does anyone know a way I can have the audio/mic go through my nexus for phone calls while driving? (Right now I use Bluetooth through my head unit)
I found the following parts, is there anything I need to avoid? Or anything I'm missing?
Tendak (Pack of 2) Micro USB 2.0 On-The-Go (OTG) Cord Cable Adapter with USB Power for Cell Phone Tablets
ORICO MPU-5S Auto Universal converter car inverter 12V 5 port smart charger for iphone 5 5S Car Charger Adapter By AFUNTA
Turtle Beach Audio Advantage Micro II USB Analog & Digital Audio Adapter
I'm still trying to do more research on backup cameras, and the possibility of a dash camera. If anyone has any input on any of this I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks in advance and I look forward to being a more active member of the community!
Hey guys
So my headunit that I put inside my 2004 E46 does not support Apple CarPlay from the start.
The unit runs android (10)
I bought a adapter and tried to install the app that It comes with but nothing… no signal.
So the issue seams so be that there is not enough power coming out of the USB port from the headunit.
When I use a splitter and plug the end for power into the lighter usb charger and the data one into the usb dongle it works no problem but it looks ****ty …
Any way or any adapter that I can get this fixed with?
