It seems that Rockplayer is now out of beta and is in the market.
It's free with adverts and $9.99 without.
There's a webpage here too:

Sucks that the red "R" is back unless you buy it.
GUI looks really nice, but I just tryed playing one of the movies recorded with my Desire and sound is all messed up like a really high squeeky sound all the time. Anyone else experience that?
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
Yep, sound is just a high squeeky noise on anything recorded using Desire camera on mine as well.
Xvids are fine.
Playing issues
I am impressed how well this player can play DIVX or Avi movies smoothly, but I think this player has problem playing MP4 or MPEG files that are recorded from other phones. For example I have some collection of MP4 files that I have recorded from my previous windows mobile phone, but when I tried to play them with rockplayer, the sound are so horrible. High pitch and full of noise, very distorted. I thought maybe the files are corrupted, but when I tried to transfer them to my blackberry phone...they just work perfect! SO pretty sure this is the rockplayer issues. I guess this player is NOT yet perfect after all.
The player does not play well mp4 and mkv files with multiple audio tracks in container.
What a f... SRT support?
Amazing!
Yes, but it doesn't support special characters.

THE PLAYER IS REALLY NICE but i too get some audio problems once in a while

It does, subtitles just need to be UTF-8 encoded (File -> Save as -> Coding:UTF in Notepad is enough)
Change to "System Mode" in the settings and then try the 3GP and MP4 vids. Should work far better... works for me

WOW you are right....that fix the sound problem I have in playing those clips I have recorded with my other phones Awesome...In all honesty I really think HTC should release this type of application FOR FREE too! Come on even Samsung has this capability...most other phone even blackberry can play without converting. Anyway good job to the Rockplayer...=)

I am trying to play downloaded DVD movies on my Rhodium and i presume its using Windows Media, the playback is sluggish and the sound is not in sync with the playback, is this the best i can expect after spending £500 or is it just that i need another media player? Shooting video and playing back seems fine the problem is when i convert a DVD the playback is pretty appalling, ANY HELP FROM ANYONE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

What format are the movies you're downloading? What are you using to convert them? Are the downloaded movies in sync? How about the converted ones? If you play them on your PC, are they synced up?
Check the resolution of the movie. Make sure it is 640x480. You don;t want to have the CPU doing all the resizing as the movie is being played. Some format may be better than the others too. And try with WMP. I believe it has hardware acceleration built-in.
Still I would love the phone be able to play HD 720p videos natively. Maybe one day.

amen! lol anyways ya you just arent formating the dvd'rips very well then cause i have a few full dvd's playing in perfect quality and timing on WMP and that's not even the best player to use
Use core player, it works fine with most videos (far better than the standard app)
Vio
try VIO Video Converter for your DVD conversions and select full quality. The file sizes are large but the quality and audio/video sync is superb.
Core Player is great and I consider 640x384 to be the optimal resolution for playback. Get a good video encoder and experiment for yourself though.
Use Super C to resize the video and then coreplayer to play it, no problems at all!
I can play 800x480 AVC @1.2Mbit/s through HTC Media Player smoothly. In Coreplayer I can't even get 1 FPS out of that file. I use MEGUI with the Zune settings to convert the video from a Bluray format.
As far as I can see, there isn't a good option right now, unless someone can say/prove otherwise.
For example: I have an AVI encoded with Divx 5 636*346, avg bitrtate 900, mp3 stereo. I can get this to play smoothly on much older hardware (a Palm TX), without conversion, via TCMPC.
So, WHY can't I find a player that works smoothly on the TP2?
I've read that the TP2 can handle avg bitrates up to 1,400 kbps; and it doesn't make sense to re-encode at a screen res lower than the bloody device.
Does anyone have any thoughts?

What I don't understand is that Coreplayer on my device has a verry low FPS. BUT when selecting the Benchmark function, the movie will play beautiful... (Only the movie and sound synchronisation is not so best...)
Anybody a working solution? On a different forum, i've read that HTC Album has the best hardware acceleration. They adviced to play movies with thc album (In the mp4 format)

i just can't imagine that there is no possibility to play normal divx/avi movies on my tp2 .. just like on pc.
i don't want to waste my time converting all videos just to watch it on tp2 ..
same prob with subtitle support .. can't be that difficult ?! only tcpmp can play them with an extension .. (and that video playback isn't smooth!)
http://kinoma.com/
give that a try and let us know if you are happy or not please
kinoma doesn't support divx/xvid
i use a free program called handbrake and my settings are 480x320,mpeg4,480 biterate-Audio,AAC 160 biterate. i actually used these settings on my G1 originally but when i got my TP2 i tried a few of the movies out since they wur already on my memory card and they all play and sound great on the default player.
im using coreplayer and ive not had a problem playing any movie downloaded from the net. anything from 700mb to 1.6mb dvd rips, ive watched probably 60 odd and they've all played perfectly. never had to convert anything.
coreplayer is definetely the best thing to get supports pretty much everything
i only use the album player for converted hd content (using the converter someone made on this site) = that plays excellent as well, and looks better (i might be ight in thinking album uses hardward acceleration as well)

Change "Video Output" to GDI if the player is choppy/crappy. On my Telus (CDMA) Touch Pro 2 the QTv Display works fine but I know other HTC devices have required GDI instead.
The playback on this phone sucks big time! Not sure what it is .... coreplayer GDI does not work and Tcpmp with all kinds of tweaks settings does not play videos smooth at all. You can tell there are frame skipping in my phone. My wing plays videos better than this. GEEZ!!!!!
Hi,
I am quite new to the Windows Mobile scene buying the new HTC HD2 (Leo).
I am looking to convert movie files from .AVI to .MP4 for my HD2 but I was wondering.
1) What is the best converter to use for a Mac.
2)What is the best settings. I.e. Bitrate, Audio, fps, kbps and so on.
I have tried a couple of settings but really have no clue to the best settings.
Any information and help is much appreciated!
I use the files that also work on my iPhone.
So,
.mp4 h.264
1408kbps or 768kbps
audio 160kbps
fps - I leave as the same as source
As for a MAC program - I would use Handrake.
All just my personal settings - others will of course, have other views.
What's the point of converting AVI? HD2 can play it pretty well without any conversion.

If you read my original reply, I'm using files that I already have for my iPhone. some of which I've converted, others that I've downloaded.
So I've not really wasted any time. I was simply offering an option to the OP.
The main reason I added that it was my opinion, was so that others didn't need to add how things COULD be done differently, just for the sake of it.
now the OP has at least 2 options - Just use the avi's or re-encode ( or grab h.264 files from other sites).

Can I ask you which player do you use.
I have movies on my sd card and with Coreplayer I get error message "File not found!\Storage (FFFFFFF8)". And with Windows media player I get error "Cannot play the file". Movie plays just fine from internal memory but that one lacks space.
Any advise would be much appreciated.
I forgotten to mention that the codec is Xvid.
I have tried playing some of my .avi formatted movies and I get errors with windows media player and I have tried a movie I d/l in .mp4 and both album and media player will play it but the screen is grey with sound and every now and then the picture will come on.
I'm guessing due to wrong settings.
I am just looking for the best settings to get smooth play and clearest viewing. I'm not too fussed with size as I have a large enough card.

I am using the same mate, I had all my AVI files converted to my old iPhone and I have found that they play great on my HTC HD2, infact I think they look even better with bigger screen, But that's just my opion.
The converter I used was download from the Pirate Bay and it's free from their home page VioVideoConverter
I'm not actually using coreplayer.
I did have coreplayer on my HTC Touch HD but i'm seeing about just utilising the album player and windows media player.
Any of the guys using HD2 can test these videos and let me know if they work fine or have problems playing?
http://www.multiupload.com/DYPQ7Q3LDW
I'm using the last Coreplayer.
But I figured if it works for you it should for me to.
So I figured out that if I run movie from Resco explorer or built in explorer the problem is still there but if I run it from Coreplayer via open command the movie works.
So there must be a problem how explorer sends a location path to the coreplayer on HD2.
Is this only me or do you experience the same behavior to?

All three files play, but they seem a bit jerky in places. They're not the best samples to test video with.
They suffer from artifacts in quite a few place using WMP, and in Core Player, they are jerky. Personally, I wouldn't suffer watching them, but they do play.
It looks like you used isom advanced video codec. I find that h.264 gives superb results.

Well, they are done using x264, AVC is just a subset of it. Plays fine on the PC, but I have no HD2 to test yet, so need some help.
Hmm...I'm using mencoder/winmenc to encode, so can't just update without the coders of mencoder updating. Mencoder is in turn a derivative of x264 if i read correctly. Meanwhile I will do some research on a GUI for x264.exe. I've used mencoder for most of my encodes so far on other phones, and it's been pretty good to me.
Here's another two encodes, this time with lesser (only 1) ref-frames, and using the latest version of the mencoder.exe....do let me know if it's better/worse. One is with the [email protected] profile (which i guess will have trouble), the other is with the good old [email protected] profile.

I have tested a couple of settings and I have found a format that works so far and is great quality.
I'm using Xilisoft Converter on Mac OS X.
MP4
Bit Rate: 2000-2500(Max)
Frame: 29.97
Audio Codec: mpeg4aac
Bit Rate: 192
Channel: 2
I am using the PS3 pre-settings then changes the video size to 800x480. It's great quality and plays smooth but the file size jumps from 700mb to 1.8g so any idea's on how to bring that down???
I'm still checking out different settings..

Your bitrate is too high.
If you're converting standard def media, 1200-1800 should be more than enough.
Also, if the resolution of the source is less than 800x480 in the first place, don't waste space trying to up the resolution. Re-encode at the original resolution.

Both seemed to play better than than the preivous encodes in WMP - no artifacts. Looked nice & smooth.
Core Player still struggled - very jerky.
Would be much easier to guage a non-animation/less dark sample.
So I want some videos on my X10. I used ones I already had on my PC (MP4's) and put them on my phone. The quality is fine, some need to be made bigger as they have black areas on the sides. The problem is, there is lag. I'm talking about a second behing on music videos etc. I have tried about 4 conversion softwares now and they all produce the same results, some better than others however. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
I have used Mobiola to convert my videos and they paly well on the X10.
You need to create a special profile for screen resolution and save it.
you just need to double tap the screen to full size the video and get rid of those black borders
Forget the conversion apps and just get the divx app.. Works fine without the hassle of converting!!
Hope it helps!!

Simr, I have the exact same problem and I can't seem to fix it regardless of what conversion program I use. I've read on other forums that other phones using the snapdragon proc are having the same prob. What's weird is that not everyone seems to be having the same issue. My temp fix has been to use the Rock divx player. Divx stuff plays in sync so I convert other formats to divx. Hopefully a firmware update will fix this.

is the organization of tracks as good on the HTCs???
on my i8000 Omnia II for instance, when u go the the "artist" tab, all the artist's songs are just packed there, instead of showing "Albums", which sucks imo...
Does it play unedited 720p and 1080p files. I know there is no point due to screen resolution but it will give an idea about the performance capability of the device.
Mine plays unedited 720p .avi files fine, doesn't seem to like 1080p, but then I've only tried over allshare. I might try copying one to the actual drive and see what happens. Mind you, to my mind, flawless 720p playback from my server upstairs on my phone in the garden is damn near magical anyway .
I seem to be less lucky with .mov, they won't play. Not sure where the files originally came from though, they were Iron Man 2 and, um, something else (Ice Age maybe) trailers in 800x480 mov format. Are we meant to be able to play .mov files on this thing?
umm can anyone rip the app and post it here ? or is that illegal ?
How does it handle Xvid/Divx and MKV scene releases?
What app do you recommend to transfer albums too it ? Where we could perhaps edit the tagged data too?
I've tried using WMP but its clunky and seems to either want to sync everything or have trouble syncing anything?
Ideally I would just like to view whats on the device and edit the alum name, album art etc.

DoubleTwist doesn't import FLAC, so I can't call it ideal for an audio junky, that's its biggest flaw as a music transfer (I'm not in love with the software, but it's not bad).
Does the Galaxy S media player come on carrier branded phones? I didn't anything obvious on my captivate.

Both 720p avi as well as 720p mkv work splendidly. But a huge problem if your into Anime releases. It has a problem with displaying the subs from the mkv files.

its an exceptional player
eq better than anything on any device anywhere
the auto eq (i think it reads idtags of files for genre and applies corresponding eq preset) is amazing. I wish i can edit presets tho for the auto eq.
the 5.1 SRS made the already exceptional soundstage of my triplefi even more amazing.
my niggles would be slight in that it doesnt support press twice to next track and press thrice to go back from the inline mic button.
Btw, anybody went and check the service for the mediaplayer
i saw coreplayer service active, but i have no knowledge of coreplayer being ported to android. AFAIK, coreplayer is still purely a winmo app, and a very good one at that, maybe the best in winmo.
But if the one on the SGS is really coreplayer, then it should be good

Extract the ass/ssa file from the video (videohelp.com or use just use mkvtoolnix), save it with the same title as the video file, upload both on the phone (SD or Internal memory). Download mVideoPlayer from the market and play the file. I tried it myself yesterday. It works I tried seitokai yakuindomo from [Ayako] at 720p.
Enjoy
Dunno if I'm as big of a fan of the media player...
When I try to open a .wmv I get either 'File type wmv not found' (in Astro file manager) or when it does try to open (when opening it in root explorer) a 'Not supported file type' message... This for multiple different wmv's (they play fine in rockplayer btw).
Also the same for an .mp4 file. A 'This video can not be played' message...
Anyone else with the same issues? Rockplayer plays all my files perfectly but if the built in app could do the same that would be great...

Depends on resolution and bitrate of course. It can easily play XviD DVD rips and such.
where are the playlists stored?
Does anyone have any suggestions for a media player for the TF? I would love it if it did the following:
Hides the taskbar - most important
Plays most common codecs - very important
Uses the docking station controls - important
Gesture controls - not too important
I downloaded MoboPlayer and it is great with the exception of not hiding the task bar. QQ Player for some reason is laggy on a 480 DiVX rip I made, but MoboPlayer is silky smooth.
To answer my own questions:
* There is currently no media player that removes the honeycomb taskbar
* I have yet to find a media player that uses the docking station controls other than the default
I guess I'll keep MoboPlayer until something better comes along.

My issuw with moboplayer is that it dowsntfollow the system rotation. Ie using the Asus case, sometimes the image is upside down depending on how you place it.

rooted with you can at least get back the stock hc buttons. the white ones are too harsh and distract me when reading or watching movies. not a perfect solution but better than those frikken bright icons.
I have found moboplayer to be the best one so far. Vplayer advnace following second
does mobo player plays formats like mkv with subtitles in srt extension , avi and original dvd untouched rips?
I can confirm avi - no problems.
Mkv - well, high profile h264 is very slow. I didn't try subtitles.
The quality is somewhat strange, I noticed a strange grid of pixels on the video. I'll check if it's on every one. Also HDMI quality is very poor (looks like 256 colours).

sorry, didnt mean to hi-jack the thread topic..but..
i have that auto-rotation issue with market and angry birds. markey opens only in landscape and angry birds in landscape in one direction only.
I'm still rocking rockplayer. It plays everything that I have thrown at it that the tegra can handle. ( so high profile still runs bad etc)

Does anyone know if you can play the subtitles on the hdmi output screen when i have downloaded the .srt seperatly (so not with burnin option from handbrake).
Very anoying that the subtitle plays on the screen of the tablet!
I tried moboplayer and rockplayer at first. And i managed to play MKV's smoothly, but only when started from the gallery. When I open the same mkv directly from moboplayer or rockplayer the movie didn't play smooth at all. So I tried mVideoPlayer. After i installed mVideoPlayer my mkv's play smooth anyway I open them. The best part is that the stockplayer plays MKV's as well after installing mVideoPlayer (but doesn't have support for subtitles).
But the main problem is that most mkv's have 5.1 sound, this is not supported, you can convert the soundtrack with mkvavi2mp4 or convert the whole movie with handbrake (takes a lot longer).
stuttering rubbish
Hi, whats the best settings to use in Handbrake for this device, I have an SGS2 and it plays 720 and 1080 content fine (HW decoding?) but as soon as I stick the same vids on the TF its appalling.. any tips what settings to use I am thinking of sending it back and waiting for something with a decent video player as I am not impressed my phone does a better job..
Found the settings in a differenmt thread, will try
I like Moboplayer but it does not play AVI files correctly, so I ended up installing QQPlayer as well.
QQPlayer does not play the AVI as smooth as Moboplayer but it displays the video in the correct color.
Anybody that knows which player that can play AVI file smoothly, I would appreciate the input. My AVI files are mainly captured from my Canon camera.
I know I can convert it to MP4, but this is not practical when we on the road.
quick question
whats the Best format to use for playing videos on the transformer, at what resolution, and whats a good piece of software to re encode existing movies to this format.
thanks!
