Problems playing .avi on my Touch HD

Hi I've just received my HD and overall I'm very impressed. I was a smartphone user previously so I’m having to come to terms with TouchFlo and Windows Mobile all at the same time!
The only real problem I’m having is playing .avi video. I've transferred an .avi file to my memory card but it won't play in CorePlayer (need the AC3 codec I think) and TCPMP doesn't load (get a crash screen) and mobile divx plays the video but it’s a mess on the screen.
I've even tried to encode the video file with PocketDivXEncoder but I think this needs TCPMP to play and it looks terrible in Mobile Divx.
So my question is how do I successfully play an .avi as this is one of the main reasons I bought my HD.
Also one further question with appointments in the calendar when I get a reminder the notification pop up doesn't appear till I click on the alarm icon at the top of the screen - is this due to touchflo and can you force WM6.1 to always show the notification - I’m finding I’m forgetting about meetings because of this!

I've tried playing avi (divx) files with great success. I have been using CorePlayer (v1.2.5). Maybe you should try another video file? it should work

I now see your problem, I had originally tried only avi movies with mp3 audio (like most of my videos). I tested it with a file with AC3 audio and it appears that CorePlayer doesnt have that codec.
Guess your only option with movies with AC3 audio is to convert them, or you might be able to get an AC3 codec somewhere.

So is there a way of converting my video into avi + mp3 rather than AC3 as it sounds like that would sort my problem?

You could try the freeware video converter program 'SUPER'.
SUPER allows you to convert easily many aspects of a video including size, frame rate, format of video and audio, etc.
I use it all the time to convert my camera videos for use with my Hard Drive TV Media Player.
Don't try and download it from the developers web site it's a minefield in how to get the program.
Instead get it direct from Download.com here:-

yes please, can handle a typical rip of 350mb tv show or 700mb movie without problems?

It certainly can. I watched a whole divx movie i downloaded in full resolution (640 i think) without any conversion, and it was working great. havent tried a TV show yet but i guess it will work fine.

How did you manage that, mines plays the videos but they are jerky, seems like it's caching the film. I've even tried same file on iphone & hd, iphone was much smoother. what am i doing wrong??

I've got to agree here with edwardscdr. I have no problem whatsoever in playing .avi files using Core Player 1.2.5
I believe the problem that others are having is down to what software and system associated files individuals have installed on their Phone. These could be effecting the performance of the playback.
It's a bit extreme but one sure way of finding out the problem is to hard reset the device and install ONLY Core Player (I personally did this when I first received my Touch HD).
Next transfer a video/movie file and play it........ Do you notice any improvements?
If so then at least you know it's down to what was previously installed.
To then eliminate the culprit that was causing the problem is to install software titles one-by-one and on each occasion check the playback of the video.
When it changes and no longer runs smoothly then BANG.... you have your culprit.

its the ac3, core player can't play it
i wish i can convert the audio via super...

sound can be changed, the audio codecs will show different results when using a different container, im just used to the .mp4 container so i didnt see an audio codec change to mp3

AC3 will play on the old TCPMP beta, the screen is buggy (missing buttons etc) but it does work. If you set up file extensions (in the options settings in both apps) to play on different media players you won't have any trouble (eg: AC3 plays on TCPMP, divx/xvid plays very well on Coreplayer).
The only videos i have trouble playing are in the H264 codec, but that's not a surprise as it is an advanced codec that can make some older desktops slow down.
As far as I am aware, the only media player that takes advantage of hardware acceleration is the built in media player with the HD. For optimum video playback you'd probably want to convert your video files with a third party app into mp4, BUT as an experienced heavy user of video files I find that a combo of Coreplayer, TCPMP and the built in player works just fine for nearly all occasions.

Rhodium Video very very poor

I am trying to play downloaded DVD movies on my Rhodium and i presume its using Windows Media, the playback is sluggish and the sound is not in sync with the playback, is this the best i can expect after spending £500 or is it just that i need another media player? Shooting video and playing back seems fine the problem is when i convert a DVD the playback is pretty appalling, ANY HELP FROM ANYONE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

What format are the movies you're downloading? What are you using to convert them? Are the downloaded movies in sync? How about the converted ones? If you play them on your PC, are they synced up?

Check the resolution of the movie. Make sure it is 640x480. You don;t want to have the CPU doing all the resizing as the movie is being played. Some format may be better than the others too. And try with WMP. I believe it has hardware acceleration built-in.
Still I would love the phone be able to play HD 720p videos natively. Maybe one day.

amen! lol anyways ya you just arent formating the dvd'rips very well then cause i have a few full dvd's playing in perfect quality and timing on WMP and that's not even the best player to use

Use core player, it works fine with most videos (far better than the standard app)

try VIO Video Converter for your DVD conversions and select full quality. The file sizes are large but the quality and audio/video sync is superb.

Core Player is great and I consider 640x384 to be the optimal resolution for playback. Get a good video encoder and experiment for yourself though.

Use Super C to resize the video and then coreplayer to play it, no problems at all!

I can play 800x480 AVC @1.2Mbit/s through HTC Media Player smoothly. In Coreplayer I can't even get 1 FPS out of that file. I use MEGUI with the Zune settings to convert the video from a Bluray format.

For example: I have an AVI encoded with Divx 5 636*346, avg bitrtate 900, mp3 stereo. I can get this to play smoothly on much older hardware (a Palm TX), without conversion, via TCMPC.
So, WHY can't I find a player that works smoothly on the TP2?
I've read that the TP2 can handle avg bitrates up to 1,400 kbps; and it doesn't make sense to re-encode at a screen res lower than the bloody device.
Does anyone have any thoughts?

What I don't understand is that Coreplayer on my device has a verry low FPS. BUT when selecting the Benchmark function, the movie will play beautiful... (Only the movie and sound synchronisation is not so best...)
Anybody a working solution? On a different forum, i've read that HTC Album has the best hardware acceleration. They adviced to play movies with thc album (In the mp4 format)

i just can't imagine that there is no possibility to play normal divx/avi movies on my tp2 .. just like on pc.
i don't want to waste my time converting all videos just to watch it on tp2 ..
same prob with subtitle support .. can't be that difficult ?! only tcpmp can play them with an extension .. (and that video playback isn't smooth!)

i use a free program called handbrake and my settings are 480x320,mpeg4,480 biterate-Audio,AAC 160 biterate. i actually used these settings on my G1 originally but when i got my TP2 i tried a few of the movies out since they wur already on my memory card and they all play and sound great on the default player.

im using coreplayer and ive not had a problem playing any movie downloaded from the net. anything from 700mb to 1.6mb dvd rips, ive watched probably 60 odd and they've all played perfectly. never had to convert anything.
coreplayer is definetely the best thing to get supports pretty much everything
i only use the album player for converted hd content (using the converter someone made on this site) = that plays excellent as well, and looks better (i might be ight in thinking album uses hardward acceleration as well)

Menu > Tools > Preferences > Select Page > Video
Change "Video Output" to GDI if the player is choppy/crappy. On my Telus (CDMA) Touch Pro 2 the QTv Display works fine but I know other HTC devices have required GDI instead.

The playback on this phone sucks big time! Not sure what it is .... coreplayer GDI does not work and Tcpmp with all kinds of tweaks settings does not play videos smooth at all. You can tell there are frame skipping in my phone. My wing plays videos better than this. GEEZ!!!!!

[Q] MKV Playback

Removing a bunch of preloaded bloatware, I also tossed the My Files app and have been searching for a way to get MKV play back to work. I'm noticing RockPlayer has a way to force System Player, which I would assume is the phones default video player.
I've loaded 3 videos onto my phone, all of which have subtitles. One is a 480p with subtitles, plays fine perfect frame rate, etc. however there are no displayed subtitles. Rockplayer does have subtitles enabled.
Second video is a 720p with subtitles. Video plays fine and smooth, no subtitles displaying.
Third video is also 720p with subtitles and those are working. However, the MKV uses codecs for variable frame rate, which make the video lag terribly in certain parts. Playing this file directly through RockPlayer causes a ton of artifacting and lag about four times more than I am experiencing with the stock player.
Does anyone know how to fix these subtitle problems, or know if there is an additional or better way to load the videos than using RockPlayer?
Edit: And on that note, is there a way/app that will allow choosing specific audio track for a video, or will it always be stuck on the default for the file?

Couple things. The default media player on the epic has ZERO options. You can not configure it as far as I know. However, it plays 720p\1080p MKV files flawlessly. I usually navigate to my video files with a file explorer and open them with the default video player. If subtitles don't work out of the box, then you're pretty much screwed. I'm willing to bet the movie player on the other SGS phones have more options.
Rock player is a piece of doodoo. While it can play MKV files, it chokes on anything remotely high definition. Video playback is all kinds of terrible. Doesn't seem to be able to make use of the Epic's graphics processing.
Until Sammy gives us a video player with more options, I think you're out of luck with subtitles

Just a suggestion but hardcode the subs to the video file.

You can try rock player, but it's really choppy with high quality movies. I think it supports subtitles. You can try it. It's free on the market.

For some reason, I can't get any of my 1080p mkvs to work. Do they need to be encoded in any particular way?

my problem is that the stock video player wont play any mp4 or mkv vids with more than 2 channels of audio. almost everything i have is 6 channel and wont play on the stock player. as stated above, i find rock player also to be boo boo at hi def playback. i can use headphones and get 5.1 audio, but not through the device speakers. any help?

"5.1" is simulated using a filter, but that method requires headphones to work, so that it can control exactly what each ear hears.

Hey..if you guys haven't noticed mvideoplayer added MKV internal subtitle support for SGS phones..and from what I hear it uses the default hardware acceleration rather then software like rockplayer
austin thats another video player for you to try lol..if not I suggest taking it to the i9000 forum as for now all the development has been there and they had the phones longer.

Oh thank you for pointing this out! I just tested a few 720p MKV files and they played great! Not only that, but it was made by the same person who crated act1 video player. It remembers the position of every video you start and stop. I love it

I was hardcoding subs until I foudn mvideoplayer a couple of days ago. works fine on 80% of external subtitle formats, even allows positioning and font control. it is great.
no more hardcoding subs or worrying about demuxing and increasing audio gain for me!

Cool, thanks for the recommendation. RockPlayer couldn't do HD, so I was looking for another player that was actually hardware accelerated.

I loaded up an MKV TV show with 720p h.264 and 6 channel AC-3 and it worked flawlessly. I tried playing a 1080p mp4 file with 6 channel AC-3 and couldn't open it. I'm going to try a 1080p mp4 with 6 channel AAC.
If that doesn't work then I'll be pretty disappointed but not by much. I know the S5PC110 supports 1080p recording and playback. It's likely Samsung lowered the DSP clock to save power.

The only point in trying to put on a 1080p movie is if that is the format you already have. If you're ripping your own movies, you should probably rip them to the resolution of the phone. Anything higher than 480p is overkill. 1080p is double the resolution of the phone. Have you tried a 1080p MKV?
For some reason when i try to copy over a 1080p movie that is 6GB, it says the file is too large for the destination device's file system... even though I have about 11GB free.

Thats normal..you have to break it up into either 2gb pieces or 4gb pieces (don't remember off the top of my head)...and it will work...this is actually where Kies I hear is good for..it automatically breaks up the video file for you if you use it. (unfortunately due to TW3 being missing we can't use Kies)

The limit is 4GB and this is due to the FAT32 file system. If android could read exFAT or NTFS there wouldn't be that limitation.

The only 1080p MKVs I have are over 4GB. Even if the phone could play 1080p MKVs, it can't play the DTS audio in the movies I have.
I usually get m2ts contained movies with AC-3 audio that stream perfectly to my Xbox 360 and also work locally on PS3s.

[Q] Best Media Player for TF

Does anyone have any suggestions for a media player for the TF? I would love it if it did the following:
Hides the taskbar - most important
Plays most common codecs - very important
Uses the docking station controls - important
Gesture controls - not too important
I downloaded MoboPlayer and it is great with the exception of not hiding the task bar. QQ Player for some reason is laggy on a 480 DiVX rip I made, but MoboPlayer is silky smooth.

To answer my own questions:
* There is currently no media player that removes the honeycomb taskbar
* I have yet to find a media player that uses the docking station controls other than the default
I guess I'll keep MoboPlayer until something better comes along.

+1 on MoboPlayer... It's been updated frequently, it's free and plays everything nicely so far. Latest when the HC source is released devs will be all over it to remove the taskbar! It doesn't bother me that much anyway

My issuw with moboplayer is that it dowsntfollow the system rotation. Ie using the Asus case, sometimes the image is upside down depending on how you place it.

rooted with you can at least get back the stock hc buttons. the white ones are too harsh and distract me when reading or watching movies. not a perfect solution but better than those frikken bright icons.

Mkv - well, high profile h264 is very slow. I didn't try subtitles.
The quality is somewhat strange, I noticed a strange grid of pixels on the video. I'll check if it's on every one. Also HDMI quality is very poor (looks like 256 colours).

Just download vplayer, haven't tried it. But supposedly it can play divx. Will try when I get home. But been using moboplayer myself

i have that auto-rotation issue with market and angry birds. markey opens only in landscape and angry birds in landscape in one direction only.

I'm still rocking rockplayer. It plays everything that I have thrown at it that the tegra can handle. ( so high profile still runs bad etc)

Does anyone know if you can play the subtitles on the hdmi output screen when i have downloaded the .srt seperatly (so not with burnin option from handbrake).
Very anoying that the subtitle plays on the screen of the tablet!

I tried moboplayer and rockplayer at first. And i managed to play MKV's smoothly, but only when started from the gallery. When I open the same mkv directly from moboplayer or rockplayer the movie didn't play smooth at all. So I tried mVideoPlayer. After i installed mVideoPlayer my mkv's play smooth anyway I open them. The best part is that the stockplayer plays MKV's as well after installing mVideoPlayer (but doesn't have support for subtitles).
But the main problem is that most mkv's have 5.1 sound, this is not supported, you can convert the soundtrack with mkvavi2mp4 or convert the whole movie with handbrake (takes a lot longer).

Hi, whats the best settings to use in Handbrake for this device, I have an SGS2 and it plays 720 and 1080 content fine (HW decoding?) but as soon as I stick the same vids on the TF its appalling.. any tips what settings to use I am thinking of sending it back and waiting for something with a decent video player as I am not impressed my phone does a better job..

I like Moboplayer but it does not play AVI files correctly, so I ended up installing QQPlayer as well.
QQPlayer does not play the AVI as smooth as Moboplayer but it displays the video in the correct color.
Anybody that knows which player that can play AVI file smoothly, I would appreciate the input. My AVI files are mainly captured from my Canon camera.
I know I can convert it to MP4, but this is not practical when we on the road.

quick question
whats the Best format to use for playing videos on the transformer, at what resolution, and whats a good piece of software to re encode existing movies to this format.

Ok, the tagline is misleading...
I picked up an A500 about a week ago and still trying to decide if I want to keep it. Primarily, I wanted it for reading. At this it does pretty good, tried a few eReader apps and settled on Moon+. So, it satisfies my reading requirement BUT as an android tablet I expect more. It is supposed to play audio and video files but I find that android is rather crummy at that. It will only play .mp3's for audio, 95% of my music is in lossless WMA. For video, it only plays .mp4. All my video is either mpg, avi or wmv. So it seems an android tablet kinda stinks for entertainment purposes.
So, I hit the forums here and started looking for info and alternatives. I heard some other apps would work. I downloaded winamp, poweramp and playerpro and none of them would play my wma files.
For video, I downloaded Moboplayer (had good reviews here) and Arcmedia. Arcmedia just totally croaked on all files. Moboplayer would play wmv but the sound was completely hosed. Moboplayer did play mpg's and mkv's ok though, but again most of my video is wmv. Sure wish VLC worked on android.
So, right now it looks like the only thing this tablet is really good for is reading books. For that I could just get a nook or something and save some money. I wont even mention gps, thats another thread.
So have I missed something or are android tabs just lame for entertainment (only playing mp3/mp4)?

They are OK but you have a lot of files in Windows Media Audio or Video format which is IMHO badly supported on Android phones.
Did you try RockPlayer? Some people report good results with that but I don't have any WMA or WMW files anywhere to try it out.

So your Android device has major problems playing Microsoft DRM'd proprietary files... I am not the least bit surprised, as licinsing would be expensive, and not Open Source. Mine plays all my ogg audio, AVC/AC3, AVC/OGG, Mpeg4/OGG, Mpeg4/MP3, etc. just fine. Of course it can't do all the video natively (I suspect the MKV parser is a dud, as it can decode properly the same streams from an mp4), but Moboplayer handles those just fine. The problen you are going to continue to have is expecting MS codecs to play nice on Android devices. Maybe find one that advertises WMA/WMV support?

Try RockPlayer for video.
It has run everything I have thrown at it.
As far as your music collection, I have not seen a lot of support for wma anywhere outside of a microsoft product (windows, zune, xbox, etc)
You might want to bite the bullet and convert those to a more sustainable format.
Also, even though you have found a book reader, try Aldikio. I love it. I just wish it had syncing options...though those are supposedly in the works.

Best Players for Android Honeycomb are:
Doubletwist Player and Moboplayer.
Give these a try. Moboplayer has codecs inside of it should it SHOULD be able to play anything.....and its FREE.

you could also try handbrake to convert your video files into a more android friendly format. However, no matter what you end up doing, the Iconia is going to run circles around a Kindle any day of the week.

Rumor is that Amazon will be coming out with a couple of android tablet in the next few months. Surely before Christmas if they are.
As for WMA lossless very few players can handle it out of the 50 or so I have reviewed for my blog. Check the Android market for "WMA player". You might get lucky.

(Moboplayer says it will do wma, but if you dig a little deeper it says it cant do the lossless wma)
Oh well, I certainly cant put my whole audio/video collection on a tablet anyway so I could just occasionally convert some files to put on it in a format it can handle. BTW, these files are not drm'd they even play on my "dumb" phone.
As far as ebook apps, I did try Aldiko and liked it but what kinda killed it for me was that it cant do annotations.

perry59, your biggest issue is that you've chosen to use a Microsoft's own proprietary format that simply isn't supported too well anywhere, and the reason for that is that Microsoft requires a hefty sum of money in licensing deals for the support.
FLAC is probably the most widely-supported lossless audio codec these days, so unless there's some very specific reason for you to keep using WMA you could transcode all your audio files to FLAC.
H.264/.mp4 also seems the most ubiquitous video codec+container, but I admit that transcoding all your video files from one lossy codec to another is not only messy and time-consuming, but it also loses on the picture quality a little. However, if you do decide to just transcode videos for the tablet every now and then and keep the original files you could use Handbrake or Cyberlink MediaEspresso; Handbrake does the transcoding in software so it takes quite a bit longer, MediaEspresso does it in hardware if you have an Nvidia CUDA-compatible card or ATI Stream one.

Mp3 is a lossy format, the OP chose a lossless format for a reason.

It's a lot easier with headphones as there's no echo from the walls around you, the furniture doesn't affect the sound, and finding headphones with wide frequency response area isn't difficult.
