Simple question which I did try searching for but was unable to find an answer to atleast in these forums....when setting up partitions on my sd card it gives me an option for a swap partition? Is this partition esseentially like virtual memory? Is it more beneficial to allocate as much as possible to this? I set mine to 128mb instead of the default of 32mb (I believe that was the default). Also set aside I believe 640mb for app space. (16 gig ridata class 6 mem card). Leaving the rest of my memory card availible for my mp3s/pics etc.
I always left mine at 32mb. Never had any issues using it. A lot of people set the swap size to 0mb.

I've been getting an error from time to time recently, telling me I don't have enough storage memory ('critically low'). This can't be changed on the JasJar can it (M5000) like it could on most other PDA's.
I don't have all that many programs installed... so I don't want to uninstall anything... anyone know what I can do?

Where do you install your programs? What does your "memory storage" say? I have 25MB left for program and only 1.04mb for storage mem but im not being prompted that mem is critically low. For storage card, i have 334.72mb left out of my 1g since I install most of my programs and save all docs/mp3 etc there.
Storage is showing only 0.5meg free. Program has 17.8 meg free. Around 100 meg on the SD card still...
Just removed Avantgo and I now have 4.8 meg free! Damn, I should have selected it to store the data on the SD card I guess!
But, all the same, is there nothing that can be done to 'shift' the storage and program memory when needed?
@Andy, reformat your SD card. I had the same error messahe when using MS Reader and the ebooks were on the SD card. After a reformat MS Reader did not report shortage of memory (I had 20MB of RAm and about 20MB of user memory free when I had the low memory problem). This problem seems to be related to the use of the PowerSave option in situations when a file may be still open on the SD card, which I think was responsible for causing the SD card problem in the first place.
I love this phone but after installing a few apps in the storage card, I realised that phone's storage memory is left with 162mb.
what can I do to reduce the size without having to sacrifice removing the apps?
I understand even though apps are installed in the storage card, some files are still kept in the main memory automatically.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Phone memory is basically useful to install apps instead of putting them on a much slower storage card (the stock 2gb microsd makes the hd2 read/write WAY slower than my old ipaq 210 with a class6 16gb SD, and ipaq 210 did not have official support to SDHC mind you)
Plus, 162mb free space on storage is not bad, you should fill it with apps
Just upgraded to a 16gb microsd and was wondering what filesystem i should format it to. I know the nexus one itself can format it for me but i just thought i should ask you android veterans out there.
Also, is there any app that can benchmark/check status (health) of a microsd? I know you can do it on a computer but im hoping for an android app
It depends on a few things. If you're unlocked and have a custom ROM like Cyan's, then you can do like 1Gb as ext2/3/4 and use app2sd to install apps to that partition (you can do this from within Recovery, just search for app2sd).
For normal data storage, just do the normal fat32. You can put your music, gps maps, etc on fat32.
fat32 it is then.
I'd use app2sd if i could but unfortunately my card is only a class 2, so i think it would be slow. I dont know how to set that up anyways
you might as well test the cards speed anyway, mine is class 4 and it is actually faster than that
the amount of memory the N1 has most things will be cached or running anyway minimising access to the card.
Anyone know what is the storage breakdown of Xoom?
We know it has 32 GB internal memory (storage) ... AND it has external SD card (promised).
But, how is this 32 GB internal memory layout?
Is it now all 32 GB for "apps"? That's a waste of space!
Or is it partitioned, one partition for apps and other partition for storage?
Or is it free-for-all for both "apps" and "storage"?
No Xoom in display at MWC Barcelona?
The app storage will probably be a small section cut out of the 32gb internal memory. It will probably be at least 2gb. with 29gb something remaining for free available space for video, music, etc.
You wont be able to access or see this "space" as it'll be a system "folder" that only Android can manipulate.

What makes you think that the 2GB will be shared with the apps? Is this common for Android? Since 2.2 you could install on the memory card. If this is so, why couldn't we just install on the larger partition?

I kinda wrote that wrong
The Xoom has 8gb internal and 32 external sdcard.
The app storage will be cut out of the 8gb internal memory me thinks.
Huh, I thought it was 32GB of internal storage with an SD expansion slot. Having us 'pay' for a 32GB card doesn't sound right. Give us the 8GB and let us choose what size SD card we go for.
Anyhow, breakdown is unknown, we'll have to wait and see.
Why did you start 2 threads that are essentially the same subject and both regarding information nobody has yet?
I read the FAQ thread and it says that of the galaxy s2's 16Gb internal storage, only 2Gb is user-available. Is that really true? I figured there was probably some other thread discussing this in more detail but I couldn't find it. Any pointers?
I can understand android + touchwiz taking up a little, but that difference is too huge. Does anybody know how the 16Gb is used, and how much is available for different purposes? Eg I could imagine maybe they have user-installed apps and user-data as two different partitions within the (16Gb - android - touchwiz).
For comparison my understanding of the sensation and evo 3d is that both of those have a 4Gb chip for internal storage and both have 1Gb user-available.
on my sgs2, there's about 2GBish of "device memory" (that's the default place for your apps, etc), 12GBish of "usb storage" (the rest of the internal memory) and 15GBish from my removable microSD card.
That 2GB is for installed applications storage, you get roughly 12GB of free flash memory storage to store whatever you want and the rest of it the phone uses for non-accessible things - system and OS-related, etc.
By the way, it's GB (GigaBYTE) not Gb (GigaBIT), or GiB (GibiBYTE) if you want to get more pedantic. A 'bit' is roughly 8x smaller than a 'byte'.
As I know, HTC sensation got 1gb internal storage for installing apps, and it had not extra space for storage.
thanks
Thanks everybody, having 2+12 Gbyte makes a lot more sense than just 2Gbyte. Glad to hear it does indeed have the space it's "supposed" to.

it comes with an 8GB microsd card
So the SGS II has:
- internal memory : 2GB
- internal SD: 12GB
- external SD: up to 32GB
My question is, can you install an application on all of those mentioned above?
Or only on internal memory and external sd? Because on the app's properties page u have the option to move it only to internal memory or external SD.
Why?
Sorry if this question was asked before, I'm new to Android, and I did make a search before I asked, but I couldn't find this information.
I installed App2SD, but the movable apps only moved to the INTERNAL SD, not the external_sd.
All the things that installed and or created by the user or the apps themselves would go to the INTERNAL SD, and the external_sd is only used by the user manually putting things into it.
Since SGS II is one of the first Androids with 16GB "internal" Mem PLUS option to insert msd-card app2sd-apps are not modified to move to the "external_sd" which is actually a 2nd sd.
What I dunno if Android itself would allow to read apps from a second sd.
With time there will be an app that can manage this but not yet ............
