Sync + Duplicate Contacts? - XPERIA X10 General

Hi All!
for some reason, I am having issues with Sync.
I completed the entire "ROOTing" procedure on my X10a.
I have about 90+ contacts, some of the contacts have more than 1 contact # listed (e.g. home / mobile / office)
Basically, I had re-create all 90+ from scratch due to unfortunate circumstances with the ROOTing procedure. Which i was not happy about
Anyways, first, I created the entire contacts, followed by phonebook ==> contacts backup ==> to SIM :
it displays, some contacts couldn't be back'up'd (I am presuming to long names & having more than one contact #s per person
(2) I tried phone-book ==> back to SD ===> worked perfectly! (Yet, on the SD card, I don't know where it is stored...if someone can tell me what file directory is located under, that would be helpful
(3) Sony Ericsson Sync - it worked, the icon had the sent/receive logo spinng arrow, after the sync is completed, now my phone book has double copies of the contacts....WTF?! ... I had to go manually and delete them ... WHY DID THIS HAPPEN?
(4) Google Sync - apprently, I have 206 contacts items deleted for my [email protected] account, it reached Maximum Delete Limit, asking me either (a) Undo (b) Delete (c) Do nothing.... again WTF? is this? ... I don't have 206 contacts ... or I deleted any of them...
What do i do?

1) yup most likely double numbers or other additional info
2) I think the contacts are found in your sd card under system/pim.
3) never used it!
4) ermmm you could perhaps try open your phonebook.. import contacts n locate that file n c if its the right file.
then I guess u can delete all ya contacts, I think 206 prob includes all ya duplicates, so delete them all.
Start fresh.. import em then sync across
upto you if ya wanna try my method.. someone might have a different way!!
anyway hope it helps!!

Okay, thanks for the reply.
Further to add, what happens now if I had a image to each of the contacts?
Will contact back-up program internally make a back-up of the images too?
Or should I just use SE or Google Sync?
Aside from X10a directly:
is there anyway I can access the Sync'D A/C thru my computer, by logging on to gmail or SE's website?
Perhaps I can modify the Sync'D data / contacts and stop this duplication from happening!
Everytime it SYNC's with SE, it starts the creation of the duplicate profiles, Google Sync is still giving me the 206+ contacts deleted maximum error message.
how do I start fresh?
how do i clear all my Sync'D data from SE or Google? without deleting all my contacts on the phone?
One final question, how do I delete SIM-Card Contacts, is there an APP for it?

Im not sure about images as I don't used them but I doubt they'll be saved when you backup contacts. I think se sync does it but I'm sure I've heard people say they don't get the full quality image back..?
Cant really help ya with se sync but for google, if you go into your googlemail account using your username/password you should be able to view your contact list section and edit from there. But its sync'd so whatever you changed there wil take place on your phone and vice versa.
maybe you can switch of sync mode on your phone and delete all your contacts manually from your google account and then turn sync back on ya phone?
As I was saying earlier, you can accept the deletion request (after you have backed up your contacts).. maybe restart ya phone n c wat happens? surely there must be someone out there who knows the proper procedure? would make it alot easier!!
hope any of the info helps!!

alternative way to backup contacts?

Hi
Just got this thing the other day (O2 XDA Mini S) and am pulling my hair out with ActiveSync. A google and a look round these forums convinces me I'm not alone.
I'm now at the point where notes will sync, but Contacts and Calendar will not. This appears to be most likely because I'm not using an Exchange Server.
I give in. Can anyone advise whether this some alternative to ActiveSync that I can use to back up my contacts list? I'd hate to have to do it all over again.
I have a memory card, so adding software from that is no problem if necessary.
Thanks
You can try the backup tool Sunnysoft
in advanced mode is an option Backup PIM databases

Are you just trying to sync with your pc over the usb link? You don't need Exchange Server for that - it sync's with Outlook directly. Have you set up what information you want to sync in ActiveSync's Tools->options?
Another possibility for not syncing is any firewall you are running - although, if it was that, you wouldn't even get Notes to sync.
John
yup
Thanks for that John, yep I've done all I can see that I need to do. Missing Exchange was about the only thing left I could think of. I think I might uninstall Outlook and reinstall it to see if that helps. Though I *hate* having to install that POS just so I can backup some settings !
Perhaps there's somewhere within the phone that will export the various settings somewhere. Or perhaps I should dig out VS2005 and attempt to write one myself. Backing up to storage card would be the best option I think, and from a look around the .net mobile CF, it would appear to be pretty well supported.
And I had to disable Zonealarm despite having all the appropriate configurations set up to allow it. I even put 169.254.x.x in the trusted zone, to no avail.
ActiveSync is a shocking piece of software - and I know from owning other phones that there's things like MobiExplorer and MobiManager that tends to work much better than the usual manufacturer-supplied stuff.
Chak, thanks for the lead with SunnySoft.
Copy the pim.vol file from the root directory of the device. This contains all your pim info (contacts, call history, tasks, calendar). You can't really make anything out of it if you try to view it, but when you hard reset, you can just overwrite the new one and soft reset to restore everything. I copy mine to my storage card every time i add something new that has to do with pim stuff.

in my case, pim.vol file is protected, so copying & replacing it after hard reset does not work. i have other workaround for backuping contacts (as my activesync with outlook simply does not work) - each contact via irda to computer. it saves contact as .vcf file that you can send to wizard back again after hard reset.
Try using total commander to get to the file.
I yust transfered the file via email inside my home WLan to the PC.....
Hey, is this a common problem for HTC devices or Windows mobile in general?
I just started searching because my calendar won't sync. (3 palm devices and 3 pda's later, I have 1,400+ contacts.)
Are there any workarounds that anyone knows?
I tried setting up the sync settings whilst the device was disconnected, but the calendar entry just disappears when I re-connect.

thanks
Thanks eva_d, I had already hit on the idea of bluetoothing all my contacts over (thankfully, there's not that many) from my nokia 6600. Luckily, the XDA didn't require my SIM to be in it during the transfer. It even took over the mini pictures I had for some of the contacts, quite smart.
But it would be some chore with more than the couple dozen I had.
I'm reading up on the windowsmobile classes in dotnet, I reckon the answer would lie in there somewhere. Writing an app in VS to back things up to some funky open format would be the ideal, even if it does just drop a directory full of VCF files for example.
Once I'm sure VS2005 is installed and working correctly (http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=41155), I'll throw some serious effort at it.

copying contacts to other handset is bit risky, because various producers are using various interpretation of .vcf file format. for instance, when i copy contact from siemens s65 to wizard, email field is always ripped off the contact and polish national characters are also absent. copying contacts to computer via irda is quite safe, however personal ringtones assigned to contact and voice dials are sacrified. all other data within a contact are still present, including contact picture.
A bit more info on the missing calendar link:-
I have one laptop using activesync V.4.1 this was where i first discovered the problem.
Just tried laptop #2 running a/sync v.3.7.1 which has an older copy of my appointments in outlook. Calendar doesn't sync to this either, so it must be something inside the MDA.
Tried to search microsoft support to find a solution, but no entries found. This seems to indicate that it is a HTC issue. I had a MDA Pro briefly sync-ed up which worked Ok. The problems are with my MDA compact running WM2003.
pim.vol not only saves the contact but also the assigned ringtone and pic. only way to do it is copy to storage card.
then after hard reset it won't let you overwrite the new one but if you rename it to pim.vol.old it lets you do that. then you can overwrite it.

contact pictures are NOT saved in pim.vol. when i restore contacts via irda from .vcf files on my laptop, pictures are already there.
I know this thread has moved on a bit, but I've just got my calendar to sync. again and I'm soooo relieved!
Take a look at this forum to find out how:-
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.pocketpc.activesync
Look at 'Cannot get calendar to sycnhronise' and the second reply.
Backing up the Contacts with Mail2Web Live Mail Service
I basically use the mail2web live mail service, and use its exchange server as the server source in Activesync. I only choose synching Contacts with this server (but you can choose others).
This way, all my contacts are always up to date in mail2web servers, and even if I need to hard reset, I can reget all of my contacts back very quickly.
Highly recommended...
Fast
please use the search PLEASE! ....search for PPCBckpContacts.exe
damn it!

Recovering numbers

Hey everyone,
I usually hate posting (as most things I need is found through searching).
but here goes my little story.
I have my 8125 (wizard), I plugged it into my laptop (not my usual one), and activesync started working or something, then I notice it saying something about deleting previous information, so immediatly , I look at my phonebook while it's doing that, it's empty! So I disconnect the USB connection before anymore could be done.
I was wondering if it were possible to get back my contact info?
I copied a file off of the phone, PIM file. I opened it with notepad, looks like it has some names and numbers stored on it, even my SMS messages still have names from the people sent on it.
Is there any hope of getting all my contacts back?
Why not just connect it to the computer you normally sync with? If you sync with Outlook on that system, your contacts will re-populate automatically.
That's the problem, that pc was sent to my father in law =\
that's about 2000 miles away...
will, sorry to tell that it's hard to get back the data, you can add them one-by-one from the PIM file you have or pay a visit to your father-in-law...or file a lawsuit against Microsoft ;-)
I found a stupid flaw in ActiveSync 4.5 that if you don't sync the contacts (uncheck the contact checkbox in the list of items you want to sync), they will be deleted...so my advice to you -after you get back your data- is to use PPC PIM Backup (you can find it in the forum)
Yea, kinda sucks for me.
I was hoping since all my contacts were in outlook mobile, they would have some kind of backup file, or deleted files directory =\
Why not have your dad export your contacts and send them to you? You can then import them into your Outlook and sync it with your phone.

Best way to backup contacts?

Hi,
I have spent two evenings trying to reorganize my contact list and understand how the different backup solutions work. I have found a lot of advice, but none that seem to work on X10. I asked for help in SE support forum, but I doubt that they will answer.
So, what is the best option for backing up contact data?
SE sync:
+ contact photos are stored
+ keeps deleted contacts in the trashbin (nice when contacts have mysteriously disappeared from the phone)
- facebook and twitter connections are lost
- address entries do not seem to work (there might be more faulty fields, I didn't test all)
Google sync:
- does not seem to be able to sync entries/modifications from phone to gmail!
- contact photos are lost
- facebook and twitter connections are lost
Facebook sync:
I have matched my contacts, but can't see any effect of it on the phone, on facebook or on SE sync... But I'm a newbie on this one.
Edit: Does not work on 1.6, we need to wait for 2.1.
Backup to SD card, e-mail/transfer file to computer: (contacts -> settings -> backup contacts -> SD card)
+ reliable (?)
- seems to destroy contact images
- requires some manual efforts
- facebook and twitter connections are lost
Have you found any options that back up everything in a fast and reliable fashion?
Please correct me if I'm wrong. I can't believe that I've got this right. I found this commercial slogan on so many websites: "You don't need to sync Android. Ever."
I can only comment on one aspect of your query and that is that Facebook sync only works for Android 2.?? so won't help you whilst your phone is on version 1.6.
Hope others can help you on the other side of things.

i have to say your wrong about google sync not modifying changes from phone to google. you have to enable auto sync to allow it, if not you have to run the sync manually from time to time.
i have never used facebook or SE sync and i seem to have up to the minute modifications both on phone and web using google sync.

Well, you're lucky. Auto sync is enabled. However, nothing moves from the phone to gmail - only the other way.
From what I have read on various forums, gmail only accepts contacts that were originally stored on gmail and then transfered to the phone. However, even such contacts are not synced back to gmail when I edit them on the phone. Perhaps my phone is buggy? I have specified the tests I have made (http://talk.sonyericsson.com/message/6621#6621), but I'm not sure that anyone can help.

Facebook and twitter data are indeed stored in the .vcf file that the phone creates.
I don't want to risk losing my 500 contacts, so I haven't dared to import the whole file. I extracted one person and made a new file, but that file would not import. Please share your experiences!

Backup Assistant on Redemptive Revolution

First off I am a total newb so please excuse me for being stupid.
I just rooted my phone with the help of a friend (my phone was force closing everything), we used titanium backup and installed the new rom.
The problem is that I do not have contacts in the new rom. I restored using the backup file and the contacts are still not listed in people. Everyone is there when I open up 'phone' and I can type in and call people as if they are a contact, but they arent in listed in 'people' The phone still has all the same problems in the original restore so I would definitely like to use the new rom.
can I used backup assistant to get my contacts on the new rom? How do I do it?
Thanks.
First thing I would go to is the people icon, select menu, then view. See if the folder that has contacts listed is checked off.
There should be no reason you can see the contacts when you use PHONE but not people.
The other thing you should do is have all your contacts sync'd with Google. When you flash a ROM, you should Backup existing and wipe all. You will then need to re-setup all your settings/Email accounts. If you use Titanuim, you should use it to install apps only, not data as well.
If you have all your contacts as Google contacts, when you re-set up your GMAIL, it will automatically re-load your contacts.

What Rom are you running? If you are on Redemptive like the OP stated they were, after you flash the Rom (2.1.2 or 2.1.3), there will be a folder on your SD Card named Redemptive. In that folder is a flashable zip for BU Assistant.
As I stated in my previous post, Syncing with Google it the easiest way to do this. I do not have anybody saved under PHONE contacts, they are all Google or Exchange Active Sync.

yeah. I found it. i dont like syncing with Google though
Backup Assistant created issues for me though because I would be getting 3 or 4 duplicate entries for the same person. Even though you can link the entries together which is very convenient, if you have to edit one you would get a choice of editing the home number under google and sometime 2 or 3 copies of the other number listed under "phone". What I would do is export a copy of the contacts to the SD card as a csv file, and then import them again immediately under the "google" option. That way everything you have is all under one label.

[Q] Syncronising Contact List via Microsoft My Phone

Hi there..
I'm going to ask you very simple question.
Is there a way to import contact list to android via Microsoft My Phone service?
I have more than 200 contacts in my contact list.
Its easy thing to do but kind'a waste of time..
How do the starters import their list for the very first time?
NOT: I also tried to syncronize my SD android via pimbackup data. I had it done once but the syncronisation thing.. i couldnt find where i should do it.
Just a newbie question
Thank You
I found no way to sync my android with myphone... sorry
Outlook exchange is easiest way for me. MyPhone is a WinMo application/service (Microsoft), and so won't run on android.
Can also use gmail, m:IQ (no idea, just read it somewhere else), myBackup (Again, just read it). Also search market for "contacts" will produce many apps to back them up to SD card.
Hope This Helps.

4. The extracted file should be BACKUP.CSC. Simply change the extension to .CSV and import the file to your gmail account.
All your contacts can now be imported to your phone through gmail
But how? There is no import/file upload menu in our gmal settings
That is where im stuck!
- just follow the instructions given in the phone's contact menu.
