One click root? unrEVOked team - Droid Eris Android Development

Could someone clarify if this is for us or not? I downloaded the desire tool and i get communication lost.

says it is... haven't tried it tho

well I rooted my wife's leak phone the other day with wag3slav3's root method ..... so now I have a refurb coming to replace my jacked up phone ....I will give this a shot then and see if it works ....but I am sure people will try this before then
I saw koush dutta was involved ...so I assume its all good, I do not like the fact it pushes clockwork recovery but I could change that later....

From the FAQ:
How do I use a custom recovery image instead of the packaged ClockworkMod?
You will need to choose a .img file, which is a binary file suitable for flashing. A .zip file will not work and may render your recovery partition inaccessible until you run unrevoked2 with an appropriate image.

ya but once rooted i can switch the recovery .... I have switched from amon to clockwork and back to amons before , I have also returned all the way to bone stock 1.5 just to see if I could
also when if you use rom manager it will give you a choice to flash an "alternate recovery" which is Amon_Ra.....

Amon's seems to be the standard on the eris. I actually prefer clockwork (on other devices), however the eris has had many past problems with it and I don't know if the issue was tracked down.

so does this work with Eris's on Leak v3? If so, I'll do this tonight on my wife's Eris. She hates the thing because it's so painfully slow and buggy. I want to get her rooted and on a different ROM that doesn't suck so hard.

Just use the standard method that everyone uses now. Its your safest bet to remain brick free.

I was under the impression it was a major PITA and extremely hit or miss? If not, I'll give it a try. Rooting my Incredible was fun enough (read: not at all), I hope this is easier.

Look for "Root for Eris LEAKERS" that method is now solid and works every time.

so on my new eris i tried it... we dont have hboot usb, so i modified for fastboot usb, went to install the drivers and windows told me to reboot... i said f*** that, connected to my linux vm and was rooted using the easyroot method in no time.

wag3slav3's root is a ****..use it

has anyone got this to work on there Eris. I tried in windows but all I got was Communications with device were unexpectedly interrupted. I tried the 3.1 on my Win 7 64bit. I installed the drivers fine I believe the only wierd thing is when looking at the how to install hboot drivers that came with the download i saw it said to go to HBoot and plug it in to your USB and select the driver folder to get the drivers well when I got into HBoot and plug in my USB nothing happeneds I dont get the hboot USB, I do get it in fastboot though

Yeah they say it supports the Eris but on the website it is not a selectable device and I have never gotten it to communicate with my computer (Mac)
I have yet to get any serious clarification that this works... although I have searched thoroughly enough I guess

A newbie who screwed up

Hi everybody. I'm Quistnix and I'm a compulsive tinkerer.
Whenever I get my hands on a new piece of hardware, I just have to fiddle with the software. My iPod Touch has been jailbroken, bricked, unbricked, re-jailbroken, broken, repaired and jailbroken. My pc has been running a lot of different editions of Linux and Windows, and has been screwed even more times when I tried to install those.
To the point: I'v got a HTC Magic (32b) and I'm very happy with it. However, I just had to go and put some custom roms on it. I was kinda overconfident and hopscotched from one guide to the other until I got a result I liked. Unfortunately, the end result turned out to be a phone running Android Dev Phone 1, Firmware 1.6 without any backups to restore to.
In it's current state wifi won't run, I don't have root access, Recovery Flasher returns "Flash FAILED.", Terminal won't give me SU rights and it's one of those 'perfect' devices that don't allow fastboot.
Apart from those issues everything seems to work fine, so if it's going to stay like this I'll still end up with a great and perfectly functional phone. Still, I'd like to ask if there is a way to either get it back to its original state, or to make it run a custom rom.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

have a look at the numerous threads on how to replace the perfect SPL with goldcard method. once you're done with that, replace the recovery, choose a rom and flash.

Thanks a lot, I'll give it a shot tonight
In case somebody else stumbles upon this thread with the same problem:
Using Jester's guide I created a goldcard, and Amon's guide helped me to un-perfect it. After that I could one-click-root without trouble.
I'm currently using the build installed by the ROM v2.16.707.3 from Amon's guide, and it's great.
The only problem left is that I tried to install Amon's [ROM] [32A & 32B] [10-Oct-2009] RAv1.6.2 and got stuck with a never-ending boot screen. This was easily reverted with a backup. I´m going to try installing another rom soon, to see if that helps.
the reason you got stuck in a boot loop is because you didnt wipe your ext partition. you can do that using amon ra's newest recovery. easy peasy lemon squeezy. you need to wipe whenever you flash a new hero rom or any other now now-a-days. do you have adb set up?
edit: Never mind, it's all running beautifully. Thanks!

[Q] Root stuck, Red triangle and exclamation mark

Hi I've been reading these forums for ages but only just signed up, I'm looking to root my hero (surprise) and complete newb.
Basically current build/software is 3.32.405.1 so 2.1, followed the rooting instructions exactly, then rebooted holding home and power on buttons but it just boots straight into a red triangle with exclamation mark in the middle of it, I can hold power and volume up to get a small menu with apply sdcard: update but tried that after getting frustrated and that said that the file wasn't verified.
how do I get the normal recovery screen because already have a villainrom on the sdcard.
You need to do the root process to get to the care bear, then flash villainrom on the care bear, before rebooting.
That will get you sorted
Well I rooted using universal androot, then used the teminal to input the su (press enter)
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img (press enter) part of instructions but at no point do I see the care bear :S
I have the same problem as Ejen. The phone is root i have superuser permission i do titanium backup .I put RA-hero-v1.7.0.1 with Better Terminal Emulator. When I turn off phone and press Home&Power I get a picture phone with a triangle. Does anyone have an idea how to solve this?
Yes, this is because stock rom automatically reflashes recovery with the stock one each shutdown iirc.
You need to stop this happening, but I can't remember the command. When you have root using universal androot though, you can stop it happening.
Or maybe it's too early for me. Wait till I've had a coffee or two and I'll revisit this...
Perhaps you can edit /system/etc/install-recovery.sh. A quick look trough /system didn't find anything like a shutdown script so perhaps this file is run by the android environment.
I had this same issue the other night, been searching for a fix, hopefully one appears here soon, thanks Pulser_g2, i was hoping to install your 1.5 Rom

Ah seems I'm not the only one well at least I wasn't just being silly then, well tried it multiple times but still seem to have no success even tried the unlockr websites method with no success either.
If anyone knows thanks
Right... Are you on 1.5 or 2.1 just now?
Could someone (preferably the most tech savvy here) if you're on 2.1, try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=726118 and see if that works.
I'm trying to work out what's going on here...

I'm 2.1 and had been using your other guide to root my phone but embarrasingly got stuck at stage 2 whilst trying to set up ADB (my knowledge of cmd is very limited to the point I only know the command tree ), saw the guide on XDA and thought that looks really simple so tried that instead, then tried unlockr method when XDA's didn't work now given up and asked for help

Ok,... So how far did you get on setting up adb http://www.villainrom.co.uk/forum/s...de-Setting-up-ADB-and-how-to-use-it.-(Windows) ?
I had done up to part 4 using ADB, opened up cmd prompt I couldn't seem to push stuff to the SD card and was unsure what I did wrong.
When checking the USB works part 3, I used the link chose part 2, HTC sync users > ADB I couldn't find android_winusb when updating the driver software. I'm probably missing something or being silly now but I don't know

Type adb devices, and if you see your phone's serial number, then you don't need to worry about drivers. Remember to "cd" into the correct folder first.
I'll try that but CD did nothing I'm running windows 7 and it sticks on C:\users\username Can't go back

I guess that is already on the phone RA-hero-v1.7.0.1 as you said stock rom automatically reflashes recovery. I suppose that the method VillainROM Roots 2.1contains RA-hero-v1.6.2.img. What will then happen with recovery if i try to do again root with VillainROM Roots 2.1?
When you try that method, you get the phone booted into patched recovery, at which point you take a nandroid backup and flash a custom ROM.
this prevents the recovery being lost. Just try it
I'm not at home and can not install ADB and run runindos.bat. I have on SD card recovery and FroydVillain 1.5. That's why I tried this method.Next week I'll be home and if someone does not fix the problem i will try the method you suggested me.
Can I try to put again recovery with Better Terminal Emulator, maybe recovery was corrupted ....
i went through the same thing!!

helloo!! i apologise if i am interupting or butting in whilst your in the middle of other solutions... i just saw the title and jump right in. i went through the exact same thing just 2 weeks ago!! unfortunately for me there was no successful forums or websites at the time... it sounded like a simple problem, with no simple solution.
this may not be what you where looking for, but its a very quick easy method that definately worth a try.
so... am i right in saying you have the official OTA HTC android 2.1 update?? and you now want to get this rooted?? and have you also tried rooting using the two common methods, the "one click root" and the "unrevoked" one? thats wat i did and i kept being stuck at the same red triangle and exclamation mark.
those methods (and countless others) will not work with the official htc hero android 2.1. (as far as i know) what you will need to do is downgrade the phones software. check htc's website and look for the older RUU and using the computer get your hero back to android 1.5. (under no circumstance should you upgrade your 1.5 android to the 2.1 android via HTC's OTA update... its only going the remove the root access!!!! - always reject it)
then continue to root as per the numerous rooting guides. done? now, obviously you will want to flash an android 2.1 rom. if you want to keep to htc's original 2.1, you can search for this in the forums under 'development'. or go ahead and flash the custom roms (villianrom).
thats exactly how i did it. im not entirely sure if this is the info you are after... but reply back and ill be happy to answer any query - big or small. (i should warn you, im no expert - but this forum is filled with the earths most powerful brains - u should have an answer in no time!!)
I have an HTC Hero. I ran the simple root method and got Carebare response.
I too have read numerous threads in the forum here and elsewhere but can't seem to get past the USB section.
adb says no device
I can use HTC Sync to sync data to the phone.
The SDK is installed and I have previously used it to capture screen shots of my device.
If I try to run one of the RUU executables, it fails with a [114: USB Error] (number may be wrong but the message is right.
I can mount the SD card and copy files to/from it.
I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit on a Quad Core AMD CPU.
If I do the Home/Power thing, I get the same red triangle as described in the 1st message of this thread.
Fwiw, I have successfully and repeated loaded ROM's on my previous phone (HTC S621) so I am not a complete newb (but i am newb to Android).
What am I missing? This shouldn't be this hard (at least from what I've seen posted anyway)

[Q] PLEASE help me! Droid X wont boot into recovery

Hello, im SO desperate...
I rooted my Droid X a while ago, and just decided to flash a custom ROM yesterday.
I tried ApeX; worked great. Buy it reminded me of my rooted CM'd G1, so i wanted something else. I decided to try a bunch of ROMs so i could make an educated desition.
Needless to say Bootstrapper worked great.
I tried Fission, then, DarkSlide; GummyJar, Liberty 1.5 & finally, Tranquility.
I must say, the latter one is a bit too buggy for me.. For one thing, lock screen.. doesnt shoe the lock button, so you kinda just have to trust it'll unlock when you swipe your finger, and in most cases, it does... But it aint what i was looking for.
Ive decided i liked Liberty, for its easy to use GUI for customization.
Heres where the problem starts...
My device will boot into Tranquility just fine, but if i try to run recovery thru bootstrapper... uh-uh. Nothing happens, I guet stuck in the Tranquility boot screen (tranquility replaced the default M screen, as well as the animation boot, just like liberty)....
I tried using clockworkmod rom manager and i got the EXACT same results.
I tried formatting my sd card; nuttin... i read somewhere, someone said that "charging the battery to a full 100% worked for him"... it doesnt make any sense, but ive tried it.
I dont know what to do... i mean, my phone works fine, but i dont wanna get stuck with TRANQUILITY!
ive also tried unrooting and rerooting... uninstalling and reinstalling both bootstrapper and clockwork...
If i shut down and boot with the home+power pressed buttons, the phone WILL enter its recovery mode, ive already tried a "factory reset", and all i get is... THE SAME THING! Itll reset my Tranquility as if it were the first time i flashed it.
How can i flash another rom?
I read something about an SPL, but ive no idea what that is nor what to do with it.
Id appreciate your help...
Paul Suquet
First of all it is an SBF, and will get to that in a second, first try booting while holding just the volume down button with the power button. If that does not work, you may want to SBF. This is a process that erases all the data and system files and takes you back to how the phone was when it came out of the box, or 100% stock. After doing this you could root again and then install liberty. If you want a guide on how to SBF, then just Google it. There are many guides available
There is a thread here called getting into clockwork mod the hard way. You could try it before doing an sbf.

try turning ur phone off, plug it into ur charger let it do the charging animation and then turn it on, it should boot into recovery
Ok people, [SOLVED]
Good news people, i successfully recovered via Verizon's SPL.
Allow me to recap; i own a Mexican Droid X, known as Motoroi X. I rooted via one click root, and installed Fission ROM. Then i wanted to try ApeX, after that, i tried GummyJar, then Liberty, then DarkSlide, and finally Tranquility. I don't know if i did something wrong, of if this is a problem Tranquility has, but after Tranquility, bootstrapper woudn't boot to recovery... so, i wasnt able to switch roms. Tranquility booted just fine, but if i tried to boot to recovery (be it via Bootstrapper, or via ClockworkROM), i got stuck in the "tranquiliy boot screen" (not even making it into boot animation), so , i had to take the battery off, and boot regularly... Trouble is, I didnt lile Tranquilty (all my respect for all dva's but, Liberty 1.5 was my choice, and it is at the moment). I liked the easy customization it has. One of my friends decided on ApeX (he liked the idea of having a bit of Blur).
SO, what troubled me was:
(1) My phone aint from verizon. I live in Mexico City, and my carrier is called IUSACELL... my phone actually had a totally different version on it when i first got it. Ill give out the version it had from factory, to trigger search results towards this page; hence help the multiple people in mexico city who bought their Droid X device via this carrier... my Sistem Version was:
Version.3.0.15.MB810.Iusacell.en.MX
Ive attached a screenshot of what my "About Phone" looked like from stock.
Cant attach anything, due to being quite new to the forum, sorry about that.
So anyway, I, and one of my best friends (with the same phone and carrier... allow me to say, that in mexico, this phone is not commercially known as a DROID X, its called Motoroi X, buy as you can see by the version MB810, it is the exact same hardware you verizon users know).
Let me say that, my phone was able to keep all my carrier config (that is, PRL, VPNs and such). So, to all other Iusacell Motoroi X users; ROOT YOUR PHONE; AND RUN ANY ROM YOU LIKE!
(2) I heard so much about SPL, but no one could tell me what the heck that was... SO here it is, plain english; its just like doing a firmware update; or, like updating your bios... Let me call it "hardware formatting"... Just a way to get your phone TOTALLY back to stock... Now, this SPL i found, was for Verizons stock, (which had a lot more crap than Iusacell did...), but hell, it saved my @$$. Youll need an Ubuntu Live CD (i use Ubuntu as my daily OS, so... no need to do that), the SPL per se, your phone, and a micro usb cable (no, not a mini USB, we all know motorola did a trick on us and used this micro USB instead of the common mini usb... i suppose they saved some space).
Here are the complete instructions: (remember this will flash your phone, so, be sure to backup at least all the contents of your SD, and; even if there is a slight chance, remember that any of this thing COULD potentially brick your phone, i'm willing to help all i can; anyone out there, but dont hold me responsible, this worked GREAT for me, and it MIGHT not work for you).
Please note that most of these instructions are not authored by myself, i just made a few adjustments to thm and i wanted to make them publicly available to those out there who are in the same ordeal i was:
1: Download the Ubuntu image. It's an .iso file - this means it can be burned onto a cd/dvd. Do so.
2: Once the burn is complete, reboot your computer, set your bios to boot from cd/dvd if you have to.
3: Ubuntu's Menu will appear, select "Try" to boot into the OS without altering your current setup.
4: Download the .sbf_flash utility and the proper .sbf file (note that a file that starts with a period, means to linux, that it is a hidden file. The sbf_flash I got, dont remember where i got it from but it weighs exactly 24KBs. And the .sbf file i found is called "VRZ_MB810=_2.3.34_1FF_01.sbf" weighting 445,393KBs. Dont you dare change the name of these; as Linux doesn't recognise spaces as a character, so, if you changed all the underscores to spaces, Linux' console would not be able to "see" it. If you can't find it, post a reply in this forum, ill see the way of getting it to you.
5: Flash the image onto your phone:
Turn on hard recovery mode; turn phone off; press (and keep pressing): CAMERA + VOLUME DOWN + POWER. Until it comes on. You may have to release all three, and press again power (usually the screen is "blocked").
Now youre in hard recovery mode, and the phone will recognize the computer via USB; so... CONNECT YOUR PHONE VIA USB, duh!
Place the .sbf file to a directory (e.g. Documents)
Place the sbf_flash file into the same directory
Open up a terminal window
Change to the directory that the files are in. [cd] is the command you use; so if in Documents, type [cd Documents].
Ubuntu is caps sensitive, so you need to type the capital "D". If you type "ls" (the equivalent of typing "dir" on Windows Command, or DOS) it lists all the files in the current directory you're in, so type [ls], if you see the files, you're golden.
Type [chmod +x sbf_flash] (ignore brackets) – this command makes sbf_flash an executable. If you've been rooting your phone with ADB Tools you've seen this command before.
Type [sudo ./sbf_flash [name of sbf file, starts with 'VRZ_']] (once again ignore the brackets) – this command runs the sbf_flash file. 'sudo' is the linux-y way of 'running as administrator' in Windows.
It will prompt you for your password - enter it (if your in a Live CD; password is most likely "admin", with no quotes)
Your Ubuntu machine will hard format your phone. Youre probably used to seeing your phone itself perform the installation of a ROM, this is similar. But it aint your phone directly doing it; its Ubuntu... Glorious, faithful ubuntu.
Your phone will reboot, and youll be in a Verizon Stock Rom. You WONT be in the version i described before (but that version was lost since your first Rom...) Iusacell Mexico will work flawlessly... youll still have your telephone line working, and your data plan (if applies). All you have to do now, is run bootstrapper again (this time itll work), your phone is most likely still rooted. If its not, run one click root again; and run your favorite Rom.
Ive tried all roms and decided to keep Liberty 1.5, only downside ive found is; a) camera works, but stock software seems a bit buggy, and b) NO HDMI port. My friend kept ApeX, there IS an HDMI port on ApeX, but as far as I know, youll need to install Stock (Blurry) gallery.
It is a shame HDMI can only be used for picture and video taken from the phone, viewing... I trust sooner or later, there'll be a rom (or a paid app...) able to exploit the HDMI capabilities of the Droid X.

Clockwork Mod without USB

I know this is possible depending on the phone, but on the Vibrant I have not found a way to install clockwork mod without using USB. I saw that mobile odin was an option for some samsung phones but not the Vibrant.
My usb port is dead, no warranty etc. I bought it for 70 in like new condition with knowledge that the port was bad. I figured that the port needed to be soldered back down. But after taking the phone apart, I don't see anything wrong with it. Its not loose on the board, but the socket itself is loose inside.
The baseband is KA2 Eclair. I got it rooted with the oneclickroot tool.
On a side note, the phone also came with pictures of the seller and all his girlfriends naked . Not pretty
So let me review what you want to do, you want to install CWR without having a USB port. Seems easy enough.
Firstly, find a app that will let you connect to your phone to your computer, apps like Dropbox, Box, and this app i put up on these forums a bit ago will do more than just the job HERE
install one of those, which ever you like. I'll use the MIUI File Manager as a example throughout this post because its the easiest.
Open the app, go to the FTP and start service, go to your computer open MY COMPUTER and type in ftp://all your #'s
Put this file in your ROOT meaning just in sdcard/ no folders just drag and drop it in there. DO NOT RENAME,EXTRACT OR ANYTHING TO THE .ZIP just put it in the sdcard/
*Thanks for the CWR file from Woodrube and S15*
Now go into Recovery mode on your phone
Power + Volume up and down ( i think )
Press REINSTALL PACKAGES
It SHOULD say something like booting into clockwork recovery.
it will reboot, if it goes to clock work recovery, GREAT. If not, press Reinstall Packages AGAIN and it should directly go there.
Just reply if i'm explaining something wrong or if you need more help.
Or you could just download and install rom manager and flash clockworkmod through there. No offense xriderx, just seems like a lot of work to just install cwr that a single app can do as well.

To each his own, Rom Manager never has worked great on my phone. Even bricked it completely once and I don't believe it was user error.
Relevant guide, +1 cookie. One suggestion though, organize the steps a bit further so there is a clear distinction between steps.
ie:
• Now go into Recovery mode on your phone, Power + Volume up and down ( i think )
• Press REINSTALL PACKAGES. It SHOULD say something like booting into clockwork recovery. it will reboot, if it goes to clock work recovery, GREAT. If not, press Reinstall Packages AGAIN and it should directly go there."
Anywho, to the OP: Since it's rooted, why aren't you simply downloading ROM Manager from the market and installing CWR from there?
edit/ beaten
Don't get me wrong, your tutorial is spot on, I just never had any problems with ROM manager before so I threw it out as a suggestion.

As far as the port goes, Eugene, Krylon360 and myself all fried ours when we were porting the V4G - so you may not visibly see anything wrong with it at all.
Thanks guys, I ended up semi bricking the phone . Even though it was my 6th droid device. Not sure what I did, I was in recovery and everything was working, then went to reboot and it was stuck on the Galaxy screen, could no longer get into recovery. Too bad that USB port was out . I ended up just reselling it to a guy for parts and still made some profit off it. Shame though, that AMOLED display was beautiful. Ended up getting a G2X yesterday for 195, just missed one at 150 on craigslist. Already got it up with CM 7.2 with a minor OC. Hopefully towards then end of this year I might be able to get a Galaxy 2 for cheap.

i have tried this.
but gingerbread loader and froyo loader are different.
it gave an error at flashing and stopped flashing.
Hmmm. That would require fastboot huh. Don't know of a wireless way to use that. Is there an unroot procedure you could do from your sdcard without a cord and then re-root to gb perhaps?

and i'm asking for something like this.
but i ask for froyo not unroot.
to flash from sd card.
it gives an error

I don't think it is possible to downgrade to froyo from CM7 without ODIN. I might be wrong but that is how i remember it.
Though i did find this thread..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1149158
But i don't know how that worked for people. You might wanna research a little bit more. IMO you are better off going to ICS.

Just use Odin, don't shortcut it. The OP here has a very very basic idea of the reason and necessity to change these files, and has not provided a complete set of steps in two different "guides" he has posted here, and nobody has been successful as per the reports.
Bottom line, save both yourself and dev in the future a headache, and just use Odin.

its very sad ((((
Just a reminder to some who have USB port problems. I'm not trying to insult anyone's intelligence here but remember Samsung phones are picky about USB cables.
I know because my phone was Semi bricked while doing Odin. Turned out my original Samsung cable went bad halfway through Odin'ing a new bootloader. After two months of playing with it I tried literally 5 different data cables that all fully worked for other phones and a few cheap off the street cables. Some would not even charge my vibrant but would work fine for data and charge on my wife's LG Quantum. Hard to find good micro-USB cables here in Peru. Finally I ended up modifying my original cable with another cable's micro-usb connector and wrapping a separate ground wire around the shield to get it to work. Samsung phones must require really good shielding to communicate and possibly not all cables have the shield connected on both sides or are properly shielded.

[Q] unbricking selfbricked stock A500

My colleague brought his stock A500 to me in a bricked condition last week.
I need a way to restore it. If I try to do a wipe it will say bootloader error if i try the recovery the droid falls down with the red sign with the exclamation mark.
This tablet has never been rooted, my colleague is not in to such things, it's lived its life with ordinary acer otas and the occational very young human (5 year old) trial wich it has survived.
He has installed all the OTAs he ever got on the tablet and this is in Sweden so it would probably be a 4.0.3 acer stock on it now.
I'm guessing it has died during a OTA or something. if i turn it on it will sit at the acer logo indefinitly.
I Bricked my A500 during a rooting atempt resulting in me needed to flash a stock rom to get it working again, but i cant find the thread i read to un-brick my A500.
Please Help!

Well that thread seems to hold all i need, although i can't do a full wipe. when i do the flipswitch wipe procedure it halts with bootloader error
Im hoping to just be able to flash the stock rom from the link you gave me. Is it entirely necessary to do the wipe prior to flash? can i wipe it afterwards?

we're assuming the tab is full stock and currently on ICS...
and we're assuming he never tried to 'fix' his tab by flashing one thing or another...
the bootloader error worries me...what exactly does it say...
Yes the wipes are really important!! and not being able to use the button method to do so is concerning...
what happens with the Over The Air (OTA) updates is its just that...an update...it leaves all your settings/data intact. When you OTA from one build to another, like Gingerbread 3.0 to Honeycomb 3.1/2 and then to ICS 4.0 - you drag all your apps and settings with you and of course some things that work with 3.2 will not work under ICS....fjor instance, lots of folk had trouble with wifi disconnects, once they got to ICS - or they had apps force closing and other 'glitches'. This is why everyone tells you to do the wipes - as this fixes these things! In the case of stock ICS my gmail would f/c all the time no matter how many times I wiped/formatted....So for a smooth running tab - flash a custom rom!!!!!!
But getting back to you...
From that link i gave you...download the 3.1_Full.zip....its decrypted so just extract it and get the "update.zip" from it..
This "update.zip" is not an incremental "update" but the full stock rom....
once installed you'll be on GB you will need to root it with iconia root and then use acer recovery installer to flash cwm....(get these from the playstore)
do a backup or adb devices so you can get your CPUID....this is important...if anything goes wrong at any stage this is the only thing that will get you unbricked....see the cpuid link in my sig for more on this, please take the time to read it, even if it doesnt make much sense to you, read it anyway....
AFTER you have retrieved your cpuid, you can nvflash the patched bootloader/recovery pkg which means you are able to flash ICS/JB custom roms
they cannot be flashed via cwm like normal...you must use nvFlash to do it....
OR
take the OTA route to ICS...this takes a bit of time...I did it last week and it was a good 6-7 hours to go from GB to ICS
there are pre-rooted stock roms if you wanna stay stock see civato's stock rom thread for that here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1633907

I am in a similar situation. Push the power button and it goes to a screen with white acer on black and stays there. Totally stock ICS, no root. I tried the update.zip thing and after automatically rebooting it says "Boot verified failed...". I don't have my cpuid, or have installed previously CWM or anything like that. I can get into APX mode. This guy here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1751978 could only get into APX with no cpuid as well, but i don't understand all of the ubuntuu and command line stuff. I would love for someone to be able to walk a dummy like me through this mess. Thanks for any help.
if u got boot verified fail error you need nvFlash to repair that....as u know, with nvflash you need yr cpuid....wot about usbdeview? if you've never plugged yr tab into yr PC - then it won't work and the ONLY other way is Linux....
might be best to start yr own thread with a descriptive title, not just a help I'm bricked no uid, thread there are hundreds of those....the more effort u put into the title the more likely you will attract the attention of someone who can actually help...and remember you just don't need a bit of help but a blow by blow description of what to do and how....this will be very time consuming....at the very least get ubuntu installed, maybe just try a few things, anything to show you are capable of at least giving it a go yourself..
there are others who would like 2 know how to do this as well...having a specific thread of its own would be great
good luck

Actually, I have connected it to my PC before. Only for transferring media though. If I've done that, is the some way to retrieve my cpuid from the PC?
yup...usbdeview.zip see the bottom of the OP in the cpuid guide in my sig
Thanks alot for your help. I used usbdeview and got my cpuid. Now I should use nvflash? Know where a good step by step is for that one?
you could try the one in my sig??

Right. Sorry, I didn't notice that before. Thanks again for your direction.
"To install one of these roms you will need a custom recovery and to get that you must flash the patched bootloader FIRSt - once its patched you can install a recovery any old way you like"
Looking at that guide, would you please tell me what a custom recovery is and how to get one? Btw, I don't plan to do a custom ROM yet, I just want to get the damn thing working first. Was thinking of using the HC EUUs from the firmware files list. However there are two files, a .rar and a .exe listed. Which do i use?

The .rar EUU is for an A500, the .exe is for the A501, which do you have?
I've got the a500. However, I decided to go with a custom ICS rom after all. I managed to put a new bootloader and custom recovery on using the a500apx flash tool. That part went fine. I flashed this rom:
Acer_AV041_A500_1.054.00_WW_GEN1-FULL-ROOT (original odex)
and that appeared to go well according to twrp, but after rebooting, it just shows the bootloader again and stops there. Not sure what i did wrong.
I renamed the rom update.zip. Should i not have done that?
well congrats for getting thru the flash process with no probs!!!
as far as renaming to update.zip that was not such a good move...hopefully things havent been screwed up too much
just go back into recovery and do a FULL wipe/format
then to flash use the option "install from zip file" not sure where that is in TWRP but it will have one
Okay. I will reflash the rom after completely wiping again. Thanks.
On a different note, why do roms require particular bootloaders?
Also different, how do you like your SGS3? If i can manage to fix this thing, perhaps I'll root my phone...

The stock ICS BL is encrypted - more or less - the only way to 'flash' a recovery or rom is to have the "key" that "unlocks" - it more or less - if you dont use the right key then the OS will not boot - the 'key' is based on your cpuid which is why everyone is forever telling you to save it somewhere safe....

I enjoy the big screen, took awhile to get used to it in my hand, kept dropping it....then I ran it over with my 44tonne truck after 3 days and munted it!!!!
I have a case for it now, and its gr8 - I havent installed a rom on it yet...the forums over there are jampacked and I have no idea what I'm doing, lol - its the first android device I've had that I've left stock for so long...but it does what I want...the camera is awesome -burst mode is the bomb - BUT do I think it was worth the money???? Still on the fence about that one.....
Ouch. Sorry to read about running over your phone. That would kill me. I really like my SGS3. I think I'll look into rooting it just to be able to back it up and get rid of the bloatware. I did that on my Captivate and prior to today, thats all I've ever done modding wise to an android device.
So, I managed to get my tab up and running again. Yay! I reflashed the rom w/out changing the name and worked like a charm. Now If only I knew why this happened in the first place... Thanks for all your help.

yeh sometimes happens with the tab for some reason - thank your lucky stars it didn't get stuck in apx mode...if that happens its normally a hardware fault so theres not alot u can do...I'm just pleased you got sorted without too much drama and it was as easy as reflashing the zip....so now you have the v8 BL - you're gold!!!

I googled your error - the consensus from what I read is a corrupt OS due to running OTA updates...
Some had luck with rebooting. Others had to send it to Acer.
Did you run the update.zip? so what happens when you run the update.zip
Are you able to get into "apx mode"? If you can, hook up to your PC and see if your tab is recognised as an "apx device" - check "Hardware, Printers in win7"
Thats all I can suggest atm - if your tab does get into apx mode OK then you can find your cpuid by running Linux -
Maybe ask the guy if he's ever had the tab hooked up to his PC like to transfer files and stuff - get him to download "USBdeview" to his PC -
this will show every single device thats ever been connected to the PC and it will show the "cpuid"...
Even if we do get the uid theres no guarantee it will fix the bootloader error - but we may as well explore all the options we can....
dibb_nz said:
USBDeview will only work when you have previously plugged your tab into the PC WHILE you were running HC Rom and BL
1. If you haven't plugged your tab into this pc before, do so now, before you run the program. HC ROM/BL ONLY
1a. Run the exe and you will be presented with a window of all the USB devices you have ever plugged into your computer.
2. Click on "VendorID" column along the top to sort them
3. Look for the number "0502" under Vendor ID AND "3325" Product ID
4. In the serial number column will be a 15-digit number this is your device ID.
5. Write the number down and put a 0 in front of it and now you have your CPU ID!!!
