I noticed the EUR model has an FM Tuner app. Without having the device yet, can anyone confirm if it is possible to extract the .apk from the EUR model and install it on the US model?
I pulled the FMRadio.apk from one of the ROMs in the International section, and attached it.. Someone with root try it out on their device. Extract and adb push or something.
I doubt it but if anyone has the .apk file I can try it out

Doesnt work
I've tried it too, doesn't work.
It's more than likely going to have to be de-odexed, and the fm radio is probably disabled in the kernel.
wouldn't a fm tuner require fm hardware?

Wasn't sure if the radio in the vibrant was the same as the European model with FM tuner support. It could be a feature like the broadcom radio in the N1
The hardware is all the same - so, this will be a driver or software issue.
I pushed the radio.apk onto my Captivate. The GUI worked fine. But, when it selected the play button an error message popped up stating that the radio couldn't be started.
I have contacted two devs about this issue. Hopefully, someone can locate the drivers - I can only assume we'll have to pull them from a Euro version dumped file/ROM.
Hopefully someone will be able to get this thing going. Subscribed

Thr euro version also has the mobile access point. If we could get that ported too it would be great. That one might only need to be deodexed

I've seen some apks posted. And the mobileap.apk wood not install for me though.however, I am unsure if the ones I tried were deodexed or not. It is also possible some libs might be required for it to work.

More than likely they'll need to be pushed to /system/app rather than installed and we'll also need the frameworks to go with them. I'm just hoping there's no kernel differences.
I've seen on some phones they need a few libs.. If those are the frameworks, them please excuse my noobness

We will need a headset, as it doubles as the antenna... But a headset will do nothing until we can get the app to install.

I thought the Vibrant came with an FM radio....
It'd be awesome if the FM tuner gets working. It'd be even more awesome if LA radio stations didn't play total crap.

Hello Everyone,
I have search the Atrix forum and have not found anything about the FM radio function.
Has anyone been able to enable it? I know it is not a high priority action.
Thanks for any info on this.

It's not currently enabled. with the Nexus One, Cyanogen had an updated ROM to enable the Tuner. I think one of the droids had an update to turn the tuner on. This is quite probable. Companies like Motorolla can sometimes spread revenue over multiple quarters by doing things like enabling new functionality down the road
I tried a Droid x hack for the FM radio.
It behaves as if it will tune..detects the headphones etc..even the volume control works and shows it is FM volume.
I am no where close to some of the experts on this site..but it looks like an easy hack..I hope someone else can take a quick look at this..
I know it not high priority..any insight or direction would be nice

From what I remember from the Nexus One FM radio, a kernel change had to be made. Not sure if that applies here or not. I would note that the Bell Atrix seemed to have a TV/Radio app (on a screenshot I saw). Now, whether this is an actual FM radio and not via streamed data, who knows. Just something to look into.

FM Radio in Orange UK Spec
Orange UK has the Atrix listed as having "FM radio RDS",
http://shop.orange.co.uk/mobile-phones/motorola-atrix;jsessionid=DZDVNQNfZ572n66rRcnTgJLKnz1Ncr12nRhyv52Z92qwyr9g9rHL!-1117014923
Its also listed in the paper catalogue as having this feature. Mine (purchased 13th May) doesn't have this enabled, from what I can see, but hopefully this means an update is due soon with this feature turned on.
My friend has a Defy, and it has CMP (Connected Music Player) its basically tunewiki but its the phones standard music player, in the main menus it has the option for FM Radio. Im guessing they are cooking up a version to work for the Atrix. I mean they should if the Defy has it why wont their Flagship device ATM. The Atrix is Motorola's Flagship device ATM right?
There was a hacked version of CMP out there, but the FM tuner did not work. I believe either AT&T disabled the feature so you have to pay for their radio app, or CMP was not quite finished for the Atrix. Maybe it will be included in a future update?
In any event I am also willing to DONATE to any dev who can get it working.
Bell one is an webased apl for the radio and tv, does not use hardware fm

I've seen a few devs around the forums saying that there is no FM radio that is accessible on the Atrix. I've tried a few different apps myself, but no luck.
even i have tried the apps but it doesn't work.. since its unlocked now.. this should be taken care form the kernel level i think.. if any dev wants to enable it he CAN.
I already start a thream about fm radio. The kernel must be modified. Our atrix kernel do no have libraries and drivers for hardware. Our hardware have captabilitie for this

I asked faux123 about enabling the fm radio in his kernel. He's willing to do it, but apparently even though the chip is capable the fm radio output may not be hardwired on the circuit board. He's asking for an atrix technical manual showing the circuit connections before he even begins to work on it. If anyone knows where this type of info is please send it to faux123.

it's small enough, i downloaded it over the phone itself. it installs fine and detects the headphones but shows a dialog "is being launched, please wait" and never stops. i tried pressing back and the dialog stopped, but no sound.

even if our phone has the chip necessary, there is no antenna for it, so it wouldn't work (well at least) anyway .

there was a discussion going on about FM radio in atrix.. it concluded that though the chip supports FM transmission and receiving there is no hardware connection made by motorola to be connected anywhere because of which it can't work..
even if its found that the connection is there.. it needs support from kernel .. so a dev can look at this..
a dev posted that he will only look at supporting FM functionality in kernel when he is sure about the hardware connection available in the chip.. so he was asking about the chip level layout.. i think nobody has that layout info yet..

unless they designed the headphone port with that in mind, it will not work that way. you have to have a physical connection between the transceiver and the port which i am pretty sure they did not do (otherwise we'd have the functionality out of the box)

Nexus one fm radio works using the headphones as an antenna even though FM radio support has never been official. So perhaps even though the function isn't available out of the box it could still be connected. I also believe that the Motorola cliq received an unofficial FM radio, but I could be wrong about it.

Stock FM from 2.2 doesn't show the Icon but bluetooth is enabled if you check the radio status from terminal emulator and such. Spirit FM I think doesn't do that. You'll need to find Spirit FM Free, the author placed it in some filesharing site and removed it from market.

YOU CAN NOT enable FM without bluetooth, spirit FM uses the same instructions to enable Radio as Stock or CM roms. The reason you can not see the Bluetooth icon on stock Roms is that its hidden, but you can easily check that its on, by say getting any bluetooth manager app, and going into it, realising bluetooth is already on

I don't see it either, I looked thru the whole list of apps that you can have pop up when plugging in headset and nada, luckily I would never use it but I'm positive they said it has one.

I can verify that the FM radio feature works on the Sprint LG G2 LS980 variant. I used the NextRadio app on the Play Store and disabled my data connection (3G/4G) and my wifi connection. I then plugged in my headphones to act as the antenna and clicked on a radio station and was able to listen to the radio station.
Can someone else who has the Sprint variant verify that this works for them too?
