Hi!
I contacted the Swype crew regarding this, and they replied you can only delete words you've added to the dictionary yourself. (At least this is the case in the beta version). So basically you're not allowed to edit the built-in dictionary.
The deletion itself is done by selecting the word (doubletapping on the word, or by swyping from the Swype button to the Sym button, and then using the arrow buttons to select the word). Once the word is selected, pressing the Swype button (lower left in keyboard) triggers a dialouge box that will pop-up asking if you really want to delete the selected text.
This is also one way to ADD words that are not already in the dictionary.
Regards, Tom

wow. thanks tom!!!! youre the only person to ever answer one of my questions on this whole forum. i really wish you the best of luck in everything in life lol.. god bless you good sir

Question: com.swype.android.inputmethod.apk Dictionary Edit?

Hey,
I've searched for the answer to this with fail so will just put it out there: I've got this lovely Swype app for my htc incredible, very usable & lightyears ahead of the stock keyboard. But there are waaaay too many words in the dictionary it's using that aren't typically used in U.S. English (maybe another country's English, ok). Too often - even with autocorrect off - it will pick a word other than the word I think I've carefully swyped, and it won't even be a recognizable word...
I've read in the tutorial that you can highlight a word then hit the Swype button & it will popup dialogue asking if I want to delete that word, but it's never worked for me. Maybe I'm doing it wrong? If nothing else I'd happily go through that process of editing out unusable words.
Is there a way to go into Swype's dictionary, maybe even by accessing it via the SD card somehow, and using a text app to go through Swype's dictionary and edit it to my liking?
The answer to this is already on the Swype tech support forum.
There is no way to edit the stock dictionary or the user dictionary.
Highlight word and press Swype key only removes words which you have added to the dictionary. To add a word, simply type it letter by letter and press spacebar afterwards.
Swype works based on previously-chosen word frequencies. If you swipe a certain combination which could be several things and continually choose the one word, that word will become the most likely selection over time.

swype words

after the update... although my screen is useless now.. i admit that the swype has improved.. so i'm begining to use it more now... but i can't get over at how many "useless" words are in the phone memory.. if i were to edirt swypes dictionary.. i would be able to make swype far more accrate... by disposing or deleting all the words that are incorrect or not even a word... any input on this?? is there a way to do it?
or to add words?

Adding words is easy. Tap out the new word and press "space" afterwards. Any new wiord you type out in this manner gets added to Swype's dictionary.
k, so any idea on how to edit swypes dictionary?? i can imagine that its set up similar to hd2 xt9 dictionary... am i correct?

Autocorrect?

I really liked the way the autocorrect worked on the Evo 4G keyboard. Is there a way to turn that on for the Vibrant?
It would also be nice to have the key pressed pop up above the key when I push it (to verify i hit the right one without moving my eye) instead of just flashing blue under my finger where I can't see it.
I'm trying to figure out how to change these two things...at least mainly the autocorrect.
Regarding swype.... not to hijack a thread... I no longer see how you add a word for swype to learn like it did previously? Used to, you would just long press and add the word to your dictionary. Anyone know how to do this?
Whenever you type a word in manually and hit space to go to a new word, it learns it. You can access the tutorial in "Swype Tips" in your app menu. It goes over this and other uses. You'll add the "word" "bob4" to the menu in the tutorial.
I found the answer to my question.
Apparently I was confused
If anyone else out there is confused...
The default keyboard is swype and to get the autocorrect working similar to Evo, you need to go to settings, then Locale and text, then Set default keyboard and change it to android. If you change to samsung keyboard, you have to enable the auto predict text thing.
I've been trying out swype now though, and I'm liking it.
^^ yeah, I did that.... I guess I'm just used to longpressing and adding words to my dictionary. I have tried to type in a-p-p-s, but I can never get swype to do "apps" for me.

This clarified a lot for me.

Remove Custom Words

Does anyone know how to remove custom words from the Vibrant's dictionary? I've misspelled a few too many and they for some reason now come up as suggestions.
Settings/Applications/Swype and clear the data
if you click your cursor behind the last letter of the misspelled word (you may have to manually retype it incorrectly) put your cursor there and it will give you the drop down cursor, and then click the drop down cursor and the "T" or text editor will pop up and you can click the green "T" and drag the cursor back to the start of the word effectively highlighting it orange. Then simply hit the swype button in the lower left corner (with the blue "S") and it will say do you want to delete the word, click yes and you are done! Sorry this is so long but the swype options will give you a tutorial if you need one. Hope this helps!

That would clear your custom words you want to keep as well
I'm actually using the standard keyboard that came with the Vibrant and not swype. Is there a way to clear it on the non-swype keyboard?
I don't use the Samsung keypad so I can't be sure. But looking through the apps list, I see something title "Samsung keypad" . You could clear the data for that. But like spitzdiggy said, it would clear all your custom words if it worked.
Thanks for all of your help. I finally found where the custom dictionary is kept. It's found at Settings/Applications/All/com.android.providers.userdictionary. I hit clear data and all of my typos are gone. Thanks again everyone.

[Q] Adding words to the dictionary

I'm really enjoying the updated android keyboard and don't think I'm going to install swype on this phone.
What I do not understand is how I can quickly add new words to the dictionary.
I know I can go into the "language and input" settings to add words, but yesterday I manually typed a word that was not in the dictionary and it asked me if I wanted to add it. What did I do different to get it to ask me to add a word to the dictionary? This will be a real time saver in the first weeks of using this device.

Type the word, it will appear in the middle of the suggestion bar (correctly recognized words will appear either side), tap on the word in the suggestion bar.

That's how I suspect it should work, though it only occasionally gives me the "tap word again to add to dictionary" option.
Though I'm noticing a pattern to words it will not add, such as expletives or words with less than 4 letters
