Is there any way possible to flash a new rom either from my PC or maybe a custom version of recovery with remapped keys?
My trackball has been on the Fritz for the past couple weeks, at first just scroll down wouldn't work at times. Then nothing worked besides scrolling up or right but I figured that pressing the ball down lightly right before it clicks and scrolling down slowly would work. Then it pretty much stopped work altogether and found that if I press the trackball in all the way while booting recovery and carefully scrolling down slowly without releasing pressure that I could sometimes it would work. But now its not even doing that except on rare occasions, and my phone is in kind of a crippled state as i messed up the rom and need to reflash. I can't return it to Verizon because they wont honor the warranty because I bought it off my friend only a week after he got it new. So I don't know what to do, except for maybe trying to return it to HTC under a manufacturer warranty if that's even possible. I don't ever use the trackball so I don't care if it never works but I'm hoping somene knows of a way to flash a new rom without it.

I've been having the same issue. I've tried everything to fix it... The trackball sucks on the Eris. I've been using ClockWork Recovery with much success as it lets you select with the Volume Rocker.

use your USB cable as a "crutch" if you angle the USB cable while plugged in (press and hold it upward slightly) then using the trackball works fine as if nothing ever happened.
sorry to see people are having this much of an issue with it mine bugs out too but works fiine if i use my usb cable or finger to move the USB port. its just an HTC issue they always have funny usb ports.
Take a Q-tip and dip a little rubbing alcohol on it and lightly brush the trackball until it frees up. Chances are it just needs to be cleaned.
Worked for me.

Just a warning: that miniUSB port is held on only by two small posts, which are soldered to the board. These posts are inserted into two holes in the board.
While these posts have suitable strength to resist against lateral force (i.e. you inserting the cable), they have almost no vertical strength. Imagine a nail hammered into a hole; if you push or pull the nail from the side, it'll hold strong, but you can easily pull a nail out of the wall from the top.
In short, pushing on your USB cable at an angle is a very good way to break the port's contact with the board. No contact = no charging = very fancy paperweight.
The magnets used for the trackball mess up with the usb. They go out of wack. A known problem I've had and my wife. Get back to 1.5 or 2.1 and take you're phone into the store. It will get worse untill you can't use you're phone.

Hello all, im still having issues with my touchscreen being i guess mapped incorrectly or sometimes hardly working at all. The more i think about it the more i have to think it can be fixed and also i think about anything that could have happened to the phone b4 it started acting up and there was nothing, not a drop or hit. The only thing i can put on the same timeline is right after i installed lockbot is when it started acting up, is this by chance only or is there a chance lockbot modifies a file that could affect the touchscreen? Any help with this or even ideas would be great. Thanks, veritas
Ps...also after searching google for a few days i noticed a good bit of people posting that they had diff issues after installing a couple diff lockscreen apps, the only issue is that they are all only open post with zero responses to point in the right direction. Thanks
This happened to me too after installing lockbot.
I'm gonna try to reinstall the firmware and will get back with the result.
Currently it just comes and goes .. mostrly comes.. The bottom part of the screen doesn't work at all, and the sliding seems to work harder. Also, when I type a message in landscape, I press a key, and another one is actually shown to be pressed.
I also tryed different versions of lockbot, 1.8 and 1.13 before the touchscreen sarted to have problems, but when it actually happened, I had version 1.8 installed and it froze when I was using it.
Just reinstalled originial firmware, and problem didn't go away.. this is starting to get serious..
i seriously doubt it's related to lockbot. many people use it with no issue.
yeah.. lockbot might have been a coincidence.. I realized that I was using a different charger (not the original one) when using the phone when this problem appeared, and this seems to be consistent with the problem.
Actually I was charging the phone from the usb port of the computer, using also an USB extender.
I'll take the phone to waranty .. I tryed removing the battery and not using it for a day, leaving it to use up all the battery.. no success.
I think that there may be some wild static running through the phone from when I charged it off the usb.
If I play with the phone a lot now, sometimes the bottom part works bot not the top part.. and sometimes, I can press something on the screen just by hovering the thumb over it.
I'm getting the same problem! I press at the bottom of the screen and it selects something in the middle or nothing at all and at the home screen I won't even touch the scrren just hover my thumb over and the screen responds like its trying to go to the next screen but then gets stuck in the middle.
I called t mobile and they said to soft reset or hard reset, did both and no fix.

It's definetly a hardware issue.. it's sad that these touchscreens are so sensitive to the charging currents..
I would have imagined that they would have added some protection for this ..
btw, it's not just a htc hero problem, the web is full with all types of touchscreen phones being afected when using non original charger.

That's ALL T-Mobile knows how to do. Reboot your phone or reset your phone. If that doesn't work, they tell you its broke. Anyone could do that job.

ANY phone gets affected when using a different charger. People don't stop and look at the voltage of the new charger and leave their phone on it for 10 hours even though it's charged.
You can't protect from stupidity. Not saying any of YOU are stupid, but seriously, don't give your phone 100 volts when its made to receive 12.
I quess that ppl that use non-original chargers would read the voltage output..
Like I said above.. I just used the usb port from the computer to charge, if this is wrong, maibe they should have disabled it

I was saying here that other parts of the phone are just fine.. if there is a problem with the charger, why doesn't the whole thing brake.
My G2 works as it should, but recently it started to behave rather weirdly...
The only button I cannot use, is the ON/OFF/STANDBY-button. It doesn't work at all. And when I am using the phone, i.e typing a text message, it randomly gives me the "shut down, airplane mode, silent mode"-menu, just as it'd happen when I press the On/off/standby-button. It works on its own... when I am typing this, I see that the "shut down, airplane mode, silent mode"-menu keeps on coming up and then disappearing after 4-5 secs, even if I am not touching the phone at all!
However, this sometimes goes away so I can use the on/off/standy-button again like normal, but then maybe after few days, it "locks" again and start "behaving" on its own...
What is happening with my G2?! What have I done? Can it be an application that I've installed, or? Any ideas?
I would reflash your rom after a complete wipe (factory, dalvik) start fresh. I seen this in another thread with someone else. If it doesn't help it could be a hardware problem. How long have u had your phone?

Seems to me like a hardware issue. You might have to remap your on/off button to something else. Try this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=850464
I see...
I am new to this flashing thing... Hmm.... I am supposed to meet a friend who want to buy the phone, but I suppose it's not possible to get this fixed until then?
What happens if I reset anything to factory defaults? Would the power-button work as it should then, or?
Also, I've got pics and movies on my SD-card. How do I completely "refresh" the phone so there's no trace of my photos/videos?
I've had my phone for roughly 2 months. Bought it as new then. Worked nicely until recently.. Haven't dropped it on the floor either.

Hey did you solve this issue? My Power button suddenly stopped working as well.
Backup your sd card data, pics and such to your pc,,,, dropbbox is the best btw. Then use cwm to format the sd card. as far as the power button, its prob a hardware flaw. sell it cheap and move on.
Could it be a problem with the flex table connecting the two halves of the phone?
I have a similar problem with my old touch pro which is done to the cable.

C'mon guys -- its probably just a stuck button. You have too much grime in there.
You MIGHT be able to clean it out and get it working without taking it apart by doing the following...
You will need a small spray bottle with some rubbing alcohol (NOT the 99% kind)
1. backup the phone, just in case, shut it down and REMOVE THE BATTERY.
2. spray the button area. Saturate it, try to get alcohol into the cracks around the button. If you get some on the screen, wipe it off.
3. work the button for a couple of minutes. push it push it push it push it push it push it push it push it push it push it push it push it push it .
4. Let the phone dry out -- the alcohol should evaporate pretty quickly, but I would wait two or three hours before...
5. replace the battery, turn on the phone and test.
AS USUAL, DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Well I did a replacement and all is good now just finally rooted it

I was running an older Paramid version of dunphp's ROM, and right before swtching the ROM my touch screen start to not function. I could not pull the ring up to unlock the screen. I rebooted multiple times. Cleared Dalvik and fixed permissions. It finally worked after attemptiing to unlock it for what seem like abother 500 times.
I was going to change over to his latest Deisre HD ROM anyway. So I did a Task 29, and cleaned and reinstalled everything from scratch. It worked perfectly for about 5 days. Now I am getting the same issue with my touch screen. It just seems to go out. Is this typically what happens when it's about to die?
Never mind. I Task29, and flashed a Windows Mobile ROM just to see, and yeah...it's dead...

You have semi-dead digitizer. But it is nothing you can't temporarily fix every time it happens. Just push red (end call) button really hard for a while and it will get fixed for a while. I recommend you using button savior and lock screen with it and unlock with any other button than red one, it should be permanently fixed then. Please hit the thanks button if I helped you.

I hit the thanks button as you gave me hope. I am currently using my old TouchPro 2 with an old NRG Titanium Rom on it for the time being, but will try this today. I’ll install “button savior”, but what am I supposed to do with the app? What settings do I run? I think you are totally right about this, as I noticed when I was unlocking my phone, using the green call button worked most often, but now that’s not even working.

Yes, I have exactly the same problem as you have. My phone was working flawlessly for like a year and a half, but last week all of a sudden the touchscreen sometimes didn't work and sometimes it did. So I tried literally everything, I was fixing my permisions all the time, wiping dalvik, task29, remaking parrtitions, even bought a new sd card. But few days ago I found a solution, by pushing red button really hard (because the digitizer is right behind it) and not using it after. The Button Savior app is a simple app that makes a very little transparent icon on your screen and when you tap it, the menu of buttons will come up (with the same buttons as your hard buttons on your device) so every time you will want to lock the device you will do it on your screen, and won't have to push the hard button and come through all the hassle of pushing the digitizer. I really hope I helped you, as this very same problem was driving my crazy for the past few days.

How long do you hold the red button? Also, I am pushing down really hard. I didn't know you could get the digitizer replaced...I wonder who would do that (no way would I send it to HTC and wait a month), and how much that costs...?
HTC sends phones back crazy quick. Atleast that's how it was for me. They actually sent it back the day they got it from what I remember. It did take a while though for the phone to arrive to HTC (this depend who and from where you send it though) If your phone still has warranty I seriously recommended you send it yo HTC. Just remember to flash it 100% stock before sending it.

Well believe it or not, after pressing the Red phone off button for an eternity and applying a ton of pressure, it's working. I am sure it won't be for long. I have a shortcut to lock the phone on the screen. So basically your saying I should stay away from hitting the Red phone off button, or else that will kill it again? What about the other hard buttons?
I am in the UAE at present, so it might be better for me to just order a digitizer and do the repair myself. I see there are a lot of YouTube videos on the subject.
Thanks everyone for your help!
My power button has been malfunctioning for about 2 months now. That isn't to say it is 100% dead, but at times it'll work if I smack the button about a few times, and sometimes it will be completely unresponsive. I have read up on the subject and found a thread with a response from a guy claiming to be an engineer who said the micro switches they use in these phones are somewhat weak and only work for a limited number of presses. Recently, I changed roms, and to my surprise the power button worked great for a short period of time. Since then, I've found that when my power button starts acting up, wiping the dalvik cache put it back to normal. This lead me to thinking, and I've come to believe it could very well be a hardware problem that is meant to happen. I am by no means a coder/programmer but I have studied it enough to know that certain code can be written for a device that sets a "timer" for a piece of hardware to die out or malfunction. If that's the case with this, then it makes sense somewhat that wiping the dalvik cache resets this timer for a short time. Anyone have any thoughts? Am I crazy tinfoil hat wearer or does this make some sense?

I AGREE! I thought it broke a while ago but I did a complete wipe and put a brand new rom on it. Heck I almost sent it to Sammy but for some reason it stared working. I dont think its the dalvik cache though. I have a feeling its ClockworkMod Recovery because sometimes it says a key was disabled and I had problems after that. I couldnt lock my phone.

well, you solved your own theory in your statement. since when does smacking your phone equate to a software issue? my power button went in august, mostly. it started showing the behavior that you described about 4-6 weeks beforehand. i say mostly, because the physical button doesnt work anymore(rarely a response from it). but ive figured out how to work it to my advantage/needs. i can wake my phone by shaking it now, and put the screen to sleep. also can be done with a light smack in the right place on the back of the phone. but to be practicle, i remapped my search button to use as a power button and wake my phone with the volume button. really, the only hard part is navigating in the bootloader menu since the volume buttons wont work there with the power button broken. so ive learned to work it by lightly, very lightly, tapping on a certain place on the back of the phone near the power button. this "loosens" the volume buttons and lets me navigate the menu. then i tap the phone again to make a selection. this in no way indicates a software issue/conspiracy to me. when it just started displaying this behavior, i thought it might be a software issue too. but it turned out to be all physical damage.
You know, the funny thing about when it stops working is that it's never all at once.
It's a degrading process of malfunction until it takes repeated button pressing, not so much force, to work. After that it works so seldom that I'm forced to do something about it. It's for those reasons I think it's something more than a hardware problem.
From your experiences, even after a full wipe/new rom installation, your power button still doesn't work, if only for a brief time?
P.S. The new touch based recovery from team win works really well for those of us who can't use our power buttons

Hmm my guess is that there are multiple issues that result in a malfunctioning power button. Props to remapping your search button to lock your phone. It would be a great work around if my phone ever had this problem again. Have search to lock the phone and volume keys to wake it. I'm unsure how you remapped your search button though. Maybe you can tell me how?

ive been using twrp recovery for a while. even the non touch version has a no power button option. but i dont believe that theres anything else but hardware issues here. it is a degradation. at first it comes and goes, later it mostly just comes( ) and doesnt go. i can even hear a slight rattle in the power button area now if i shake the phone.
about after flashing.. at first, 50% of the time it would work after flashing, but it was just coincidence. but now no. btw, i flash many times a day, even then when it first started acting funny. flashing, wiping, it just doesnt make a difference, its coincidence.

@tw1tchy, I totally agree it is multiple factors, which is why I can only speak for myself based on my experiences, although your overall experience seems to be similar to mine.
@simms22, I have never noticed a rattle in my phone, its likely that you and I have different causes attributed to the power button failure.
Not trying to beat a dead horse but just for the sake of being thorough, have you tried ODIN? I noticed a substantial difference when I ODIN'ed back to stock.

I've had a similar problem for the last 4 months or so. It started when I dropped my nexus without the cover onto concrete floor. Not good I know.
But anyway...ever since then the power button been funny. Sometimes it didn't work at all and I couldn't turn the screen off and on. It was really bad. It took a while but now I kind of know how to handle it. Still annoying mind u.
Basically with mine the trick is to press the button really really hard towards the top end and it works fine. I've also noticed what some others are saying about changing rooms and doing resets etc. It seems to help as well.
But yeah...I still love my nexus. Lol. I think by me dropping it is the reason for my problems. It probably landed badly and loosened some part of the connection in that section or something. But as I said...all Is good now that I know the trick to it.

I've had my NS since Christmas Eve 2009 and the power button completely stopped working 2 days ago. I did notice over the past few weeks that it wasn't responding properly. TBH, my NS has been through a LOT in the past 14-months (multiple impacts, spillages, kids etc), I'm surprised it's lasted this long
I'm now using the ButtonRemapper app to use 'search' as the power button. Works great! Plus my volume keys wake the phone up so all is ok.
I love my NS and wish I bought another one when CPW had them for £150 sim free!
It might be time for me to let go of the NS , just have to decide which phone is next (but thats for another thread lol)
ugh mine is under a year old. im very angry that this happened so quickly. im gonna try giving samsung a call. hopefully the will replace it. i shouldn't have to hack my phone in order to make it usable.
@rener78 You seem to have a vast misunderstanding of how sarcasm works. Just as future reference, posting dry, tasteless irony up on the internet as a smart-mouthed statement of ill will is about as practical as a chocolate teapot.
@staplebox Lol! Well played, sir or madam. I can't say posting a thread containing the words conspiracy theory doesn't grant me at least a well placed snarky comment. Although to be fair, I was kinda bored when I wrote it.
@ALL Yes, I get it, we've all dropped our phones before. I guess I expected a bit more from Sammy since my little old HTC hero that I beat halfway to hell is still going strong, while I pampered this nexus and its already giving me problems >1 year in but that's a whole different discussion I suppose.

great mine just went out yesterday... had mine for a ltl over a year now.
No tapping certain areas or anything works.
I did notice it slowly degrade over the past few weeks.
I used the fix my power button app so my volume keys wake up my phone, but sometimes after using that 5 or 6 times it will stop working too so i have to plug my phone in the charger to turn it on. Is there another way of getting the volume keys to act as a wake button??
edit: i'm gonna try out that button remapper i saw in an earlier post.

if you are using an ics rom go to the main settings, security, lockscreen.. now disable the lockscreen. you can now wake your device with the volume button. its a feature built into ics.
interesting did not know this. Thanks, I think I'm still gonna use the button remapper to change the function of the search key to the power so I can reboot and stuff and go into recovery and such easier since i'm running cm9.

Here's another question what if i need to pull the battery?? I'm rooted and running CM9 what if i go into a boot loop and i need to pull the battery with no charger around (i know how to do it with a charger) would the button remap solve this?

no. the button remapper app doesnt do anything when off or the screens off. honestly, i no boot many times a week(because i test the trinity kernel as its being developed before release), ive figured out a system of light taps near the power button to let the volume buttons let me scroll, and to select in the bootloader.so for me its a non issue. to power up from being powered up, i dont do anything. a, pluging in powers it. b, tapping the back powers it when no usb is available. c, it powers up by itself usually, seconds to a few minutes after powering off.
Being a heavy user of my nexus s since July 2011, the power button died last Sunday.
One of the most important problems i had after that was that i was unable to lock bootloader before giving the mobile to samsung service, because the stuck power button caused problems to fastboot commands and the bootloater usage(menu) in general.
Finally i decided to go to the service and give the phone. The result was that in about an hour they replaced the button and gave me back the mobile. The repair was covered by the 2 years warranty and the unlocked bootloader did not cause any problem to that.
Up to now i have a "brand new" nexus s and i hope that the new button will last much longer.
Hi folks. I gave my HD2 to my wife "big mistake" and she got it wet with water I had it running Windows7.5. The only way it turns on is by plugging it in to wall charger or USB. Power button does not seem to work. I can get to magldr and boot to windows manually but it just reboots to magldr. Once I unplug the phone it shuts off. I am able to get into bootloader. I've done a task29 and flashed back to windows 6.5 but it just bootloops. I don't know if there is any hope for this phone but I'm not giving up that easy. I do have the latest radio and my hspl is 2.08. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Did you try doing the whole works, ie Stock ROM flash via an SD card? that will wipe the whole device, SPL, ROM and Radio, all included.
I do fear that its not going to make any differences though because......

His right, but I assume its a bit to late for that now!
One other thing you could try, and its a bit of a curve ball, try squashing the bottom of the phone around the keys (not on the keys them selves, but all around.
Typically the key issue and digitiser issue are linked to the panels separating, ive found that squashing it all together again can make the buttons and digitiser work again but I seriously doubt it will help in this casa but it costs nothing to try
Hopefull!
Got home from work took the battery out and i noticed the three little tabs from the power were bent. I fixed them up a bit and by a miracle somehow the phone works now! But theres something else wrong now. the touch screen does not work now! So I'm assuming I'll need a screen digitizer? Thanks for all the quick responses
Maybe, but try squashing it first, the cable is below the power button an has a habbit of falling out, squashing it together can work, its what's keeping my hd2 alive now, fixing the broken usb socket is somewhat more troublesum!

Rule number one don't turn it on. Remove all parts you can easily remove (sim card etc.) and let it dry for atleast 1 day.
Because if you turn it on, and there's water, there could be electronic shocks which damages phone inside.

So after all the tips and tricks. I still can't get the screen to be responsive. But at least it turns on now.
? The hardware buttons still work, so how do I know if I need to replace only the LCD screen and/or digitizer!?

As mentioned already first call on a wet phone is cut all power.
second is stripping it & letting it dry out for several days in a warm environment or using trick such as rice in a bag with phone to draw moisture out.
Running the device & flashing it while wet/damp is not the way to go.
Give it some more time to dry out & if digi does not respond perhaps a new digi is worth a shot pending on whether you want take the gamble & feel up to the challenge ...
you should have waited for it to dry at least before turning on the power. Your device has more likely been "grounded"
