New to Android - EVO 4G General

Hey,
I'm on T-Mobile right now and I have the n900. I'm thinking of moving to Sprint and getting the EVO this friday.
I've been lurking for a couple of weeks and I haven't really found a post with rational complaints about the phone. So I figured I'd ask EVO owners what the main issues are with the phone.
Battery life for instance, the n900 has pretty awful battery life but I've been able to make it work. I can get it through a 9-3/4 shift with 3G always connected. How does the EVO compare? I heard the Droid X might be even better but that's a no go for me.
I want to use the EVO as a primary phone and I'll do my mobile browsing and all that facebook/twitter stuff on it. I compared the n900 browser and the Android browser at the sprint store and I was damn impressed. It was a lot faster and it wasn't even on 4G.
Sorry for the long post. Bear with me, I'm a tad excited.

I love the EVO, its probably one of the best phones i ever owned. The battery is a bit of a problem, but then again your running a powerful phone. I would recommend that you root the phone and add a rom, preferably Damage Control, the battery runs amazing with the rom. Also, you can fix the 30 fps problem it has with a simple signed file.
Other than that the phone is amazing, it actually runs really fast on 3g, i havent tried 4g yet but 3g on this phone runs faster than other phones. The camera is just truly amazing on it, 8 megapixels and great video, 720p. I would recommend this phone.
Another option is to wait a little and try out the new phone by samsung, i cant remember the name at the moment, but that is another great phone coming to sprint.

I really don't like the look of the Epic 4G. Sprint has that 30 day return thing, right?
What is the 30 fps thing?
Also, I have been wondering if I should root it or not. I really don't like playing around with my primary phone, I haven't even overclocked my n900 yet. Is rooting something the average user would do?

there is a known issue of stock evos being maxed out at 30 frames per second. the devs here have been working hard to remove that cap and have progressed in that quest very well just make sure when u get ur phone u check the hardware and panel to know what kernel to flash to get better fps (only way i know of the checking the panel is by rooting. not sure if u can do it without). awesome thing about android is that its completely customizable. as said by ruben8448, u can add a custom rom to spice up ur UI and also some come with kernels to help out with battery drain. they've released the source for the evo so there is gonna be alot of good things coming in regards to custom roms. u think the evo/android os is fast? wait for froyo. its a complete overhaul of the OS and speeds will increase 3-5 times faster. once u go android, u really wont wanna swap to anything else the options are just too endless

Is the headphone jack like the iPhone/iPod one?
I couldn't use my ipod earphones with my n900. The mic doesn't work too well with nokias

I figured I'd chime in here,I've had my Evo since the Friday after launch and love it.Battery drain was a bit of an issue before the updated radios came out but I was able to pick up 2 spares and a charger on Ebay for around 10 bucks.Since they updated the readios I'm generally getting thru my 10 hr day with about 50% battery remaining with what I would consider moderate use(total of an hour or so of web browsing, checking and replying to emails several times a day and a hand ful of voicecalls).I have rooted and its really been made quite easy to do now.I'm in total agreement with thgoob, once you've had an android you'll never go back

Another thing, the 30 fps issue affects only game graphics for the most part, right?

I agree with you on the 3G speed, while waiting for food last night, I loaded up a couple websites and was astonished at how fast they would load. Just purchased my EVO on monday, switched from a 3g iPhone, So far So good.

I'm not a gamer, and 30 fps is a non-issue - I really don't get all the whining on this issue. Coming from WinMo, cutting & pasting with Android is a pain. I don't see a good solution yet for editing spreadsheets. Can't use Skype with Android. Battery life is OK - you can get through the day with moderate use without changing the stock software. Screen looks great, fun to use.

i've not noticed any issues with the 30fps cap. perhaps i will noticed a difference if CM6 incorporates a change. but for me, its a non-issue.
i'm more looking forward to see if they can activate the FM Transceiver.
battery life requires that you compromise with your phone. some ROMs are better at battery life than others. I personally prefer the FRESH ROMs. stable and solid. the 4G is turned off most of the time because i live right along the edge of the coverage lines...so i chew through the battery in an attempt to stay connected as i commute and go up the elevator. when i need it, i turn it on (thank you QuickDesk) and away i go. but to be honest, the 3g is fast enough for most of what i do. the one big advantage of having 4g on is that my meebo does not disconnect if i take a phone call. if i'm 4g is off, a phone call will disconnect meebo. again not a 'OMG issue', but i do look forward to stronger 4g coverage.
however, with cyanogen about to release CM6 for the EVO, i will be jumping over play with that. keep in mind that CM6 is Android 2.2 Froyo (not the current EVO OS of Android 2.1).
oh...here is a good battery related thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=712990

Battery life will always be an issue especially with a phone as powerful as the EVO and a screen this big. However, like posted earlier, rooting opens up big improvements for battery life and performance. Android is not a great OS for productivity. That's what Blackberrys and WM are for. The fps fix does improve scrolling and video recording in my opinion. Also, I recently switched from T Mobile after 9 years of service and Sprint's data coverage and speed are WAY better. If you like a physical keyboard get a moment or wait for the epic. Otherwise, go with the EVO.

How does the cutting and pasting work? I didn't think about trying that at the store
There is no android skype client?

How do close apps on the EVO? How do you switch between active apps?

thinking about getting a Nexus One - a few questions

how is the battery life?
is the phone stable on AT&T?
i'm coming from an SE X10. the phone is eye candy. and other than the camera, it ain't all that.

Battery life is fair to good.
...Yes (why wouldn't it be?)

Dropped calls are a network issue, not a hardware issue

No issues I know of with the phone. OP, no one likes dropped calls. Mine works fine - in this area. Your mileage may vary.
I can go a day, but not two with a single charge most of the time, unless I am using turn by turn nav, and then I am charging while driving. Radios eat batteries. Run only those you need, and keep good widgets handy to manage them.
I've had the Nexus One for AT&T for close to a month, and I live in the DC area. Take my unscientific, layman's review for what it is.
The phone is very nice. It's easily the best phone I've ever had, but I cannot say that it's a superphone without adding certain things to consider. I've been on this forum for a long time, since I bought an 8525 and was blown away to find through Google searches that people were customizing their phones to speed them up.
I really thought my days of modding the phone to death and waiting for the latest dev release to speed my phone up would be over with a 1Ghz phone with 512 MB of RAM running Android. Sadly enough, that's just not true. I figured the phone would fly out of the box. In a lot of ways it does, but I found the stock ROM to not be aesthetically smooth. The scrolling on the default launcher is borderline painful considering the hardware. Third party launchers like LauncherPro are essential (to me) for a smooth user experience.
I'm also disappointed by the browsing experience. Many sites feature choppy scrolling, another thing I thought would be behind me with a phone so powerful. Considering how the iPhone 3G my girlfriend has regularly puts up a smoother scrolling experience than the Nexus One particularly hits home.
But, after some tweaking (Cyanogen Mod, a 1.1 Ghz Kernel, and some third party apps from the Market), I am really, really enjoying the phone. The camera is very high quality, better than I expected, and the flash works much better than I anticipated. I find myself rarely using my desktop or laptop because everything I'd do on there I can accomplish on my phone. It's become rather integral to my day to day activity.
I'm probably a heavier user than most people, so my battery life is rather flimsy. I can drain the battery easily in half a day, but I keep push on, keep the brightest relatively high, and am always tinkering around with it. I bought this pack of 2 batteries and an external charger for about 20 bucks off of eBay, so I'm never without a fresh battery so it's not a big deal for me, but it would have been nice to have better battery life.
One of the biggest glaring faults is the touch screen sensor used in this phone. When I see the term superphone, I don't expect to find out that previous generation, inexpensive components are used. As it stands now, the sensor gets confused when two touches are put on within 15mm along the same axis. What this means is that for games where say a virtual stick and buttons are along the same axis you will have input issues because it'll read as one straight line rather than you moving the stick up while pressing fire.
It's something you can look up on the internet or youtube. It's been talked about quite extensively. It's definitely the biggest detractor for me. It's fine for browsing and pinching, but if you game keep that in mind. You'll also occasionally find some weird inputs in general at random, especially if there are a lot of finger prints on the screen, or if you're holding the phone with one hand and you try to reach across the screen with your thumb. All in all it's poor form to use such a lame sensor, especially considering that phones generations before this one have better hardware.
But, I love the phone. It being a Google phone almost guarantees that it will be first in line for Android updates (Froyo?).
The pro's outweigh the con's, in my opinion, and it's a very nice phone. Froyo will make it an even better phone. As far as 3G, I don't have any problems. I've gotten at as high as ~2900kbps, which is a lot faster than I ever got on my iPhone or Tilt 2.
The only phone I'd take over this is the Evo 4G, because of the screen and the 4G. But from what I read the camera's actually better on the Nexus One.
Don't do it! Nexus is all hype. Keep looking, there are better phones on the market. I love my nexus, but it annoys me. It has stupid little quirks. I can't wait until my next phone.
With that said, if you still want it. Battery life is impressive and AT&T connectivity is decent in my area.
I just dumped my iPhone 3g for the Nexus one.
The out of the box Rom is crap, particularly if you need Exchange sync full support.
You need to unlock the bootloader and put a better rom on.
Once I switched to Modaco's R21 Rom and now trying some different Kernels, it does everything I need.
It is fast, stable, my coverage on ATT is still the same, no difference.
Maybe look at getting the HTC Desire, that will run on ATT right? There are versions out there you can get that will run 3G I thought.
Nexus is not all hype... obviously no phone is perfect but I didn't regret spending $560+ for this phone... if you root or not froyo will make this phone a great buy.

Wait until June 4th and see how the Evo launch goes!
The Nexus One is amazing, but the Evo is just GOD-like!
thank you all for the feedbacks for the nexus one.
i guess the thing about nexus one is that it's going to be getting all the updates firsthand and a lot faster than almost all the phones out there. flash and the allegedly 450% boost in speed is something that i seriously consider.
i like the evo but i'm not sure if it would work with ATT's network.

I think the Nexus is the least hyped phone if you compare it to iPhone forexample. Especially since it's the Google phone.. you would belive it was hyped up and donw, but there was little publicity about it in my opinion. Just rumor talk and it suddenly was out for sale..

Give 'em hell!
i'm really thinking about getting the nexus one. google store is closing down so i guess i have to make my decision real soon.
right now it's all about the software. i think x10 has a better overall hardware but the software is outdated and there are apps that do not support 1.6. plus flash is coming out for android and nexus one rooted or not will get it regardless. so the hardware for my x10 is impressive but without the software to make advantage of the x10 is kinda leaving me with a sour taste in my mouth. plus no multi-touch for x10, ever. another drawback...
EDIT: Read a post wrong.
I've been very very happy with my N1, much happier than my friends were with their iPhones when they first came out.
Im fine with mine. I can make it through the day on a battery although just barely on heavier usage days. This is all I have got out of any recent smartphone so charging nightly is situation normal to me. Mine has had no issues. Personally I have been quite happy with the N1, its been a pleasure to use and I have no problem with hanging on to it till the next thing comes along.

I looooove this phone!!!

i came from winmo and iphone.. and i can tell you this phone's hardware and OS tops em all,
issues i am not having with this phone:
Battery problems (am i the only one)
Screen issues
4G & connection issues
Volume level
Contacts r perfect
Memory
CPU
issues i am having with this phone:
Absolutely none.
there you have it, a completely happy htc/android user.
+1 I agree!!

Yes! Showing it off to my friends all the time!
I LOVE my Evo ! ! !
LMAO!...you guys are a trip!
I also love my phone though!.....No problems here! :knocks on wood:
........cept for the freakin' 30fps issue Which i have faith in XDA, to fix it :-D
+1 here gives me better batter life than my g1 ever did now. Bluetooth, pandora, wifi, and ~ 2:20 hrs of talk time while still multitasking fast is priceless had a run at my battery for 8hrs up to 33% battery before i charged again....
Showing it off everywhere as well and people get amazed at how well it works, everyone wants a piece of it.
Will finally root it when the 30 days are over in case anything goes wrong, but so far best phone ever.
Man I got full flash, WiFi tethering, using rockplayer I can play downloaded divx and mkv files, and hdmi out to my 60" screen. I can understand ppl freaking out about the 30fps issues. But so far I see no impact on the previously mentioned
Tasks and I am pretty sure the devs will come up with a fix soon... if u want to use ur phone all day long get the 3800mah battery that also coming out soon..
Don't get brainwashed by Apple again like the rest of the iPhone owners.

had mine for a little over a week now, and think this is definitely the most powerful phone on the market at the moment. this is my first Android phone (coming from winmo 6.1), and I am truly impressed with Android and the speed of this phone. the display is incredible too...I could never go back to a small display again, and my winmo phone was 3.8 inches!
now bring on froyo!!
I may have issues, but I love this phone, i'm not leaving it for anything.
gotta get in on the Evo love-fest.. but +1 for the OP..this is by FAAARR the best phone i have owned.... and i have owned a LOT of them (including iphone, BBs and winmo).
Yes, there are "issues"... but.. unlike ANY other platform.. we wont have to wait for the manufacturer to fix them cause we have a community of BA devs that will prob take care of the issue before HTC actually admits that it IS a problem...
For those still complaining about battery... Have you had experience on any other android?? For what this phone does, battery life is on par with my MyTouch 3G and WAY WAY WAY WAY more powerful and better in anyway.. unfortunately, until google fixes the battery drain issues in ANdroid... just sit back and enjoy the amazing phone you have in your hands (buy a car charger and an extra USB cable to keep with you)..
Just my 2cents...
+1 I love mine as well...
+1 I also love my EVO...
I am very happy with the phone. Nothing is ever perfect and some people can't accept that. They bounce around from phone to phone only to finally succumb to that realization.
I eyed the Motorola X as well. But its just an EVO in sheeps clothing
I am sure by Fall I will have a new phone.
The only thing I would love to see from the CDMA world is the ability to switch on and off other phones on the same number. Kinda of like a SIM CHIP. With AT&T I had 3 phones that I could use whenever I felt like it.
When I knew I was going to be out for a while and away from a charger I would use my BB BOLD. IPHONE & HTC Desire(850mhz) when I wanted to tool around.
I just sold my Verizon Incredible and moved it to an Data Line for my Laptop with a built in Wireless Mobile Broad Band. It does offer the best coverage all around.
I just installed the Evolution v7 with Sprint VVM, Flash 10.1 and a few tweaks and won't got back to 2.1 - at least for the moment.
It's great to have a forum that has so many intelligent developers helping out the community.
+1 for the Evo, but was also blown away by the Andoird OS in general. Really sleek and intelligent under the hood. I was scared to move to it at first, and now I feel stupid for ever even hesitating...
And I also really like HTC Sense. Very well done in my book Made the migration from WinMo completely painless.

[Q] When will we see Froyo??? Not sure I can continue with the Epic without it...

I've had a an EVO since day one & absolutely loved the phone, but being the phone junkie I am, I had to grab an Epic as well & not so sure about my decision. I mean I can always fall back to the EVO, but there are a lot of nice benefits of the Epic...
- The screen is absolutely gorgeous(thats a given)
- I'm 50/50 on the physical keyboard & actually find I use Swype just as much
- The Hummingbird destroys the Snapdragon
But, battery life is even worse than on the EVO sadly. I mean I even have my home screen pretty much all black, as that supposedly uses zero power & can barely make it through an 8 hour work day with light use. Also, it just feels cheap compared to the EVO. I mean if I drop this thing once, I'm sure it's toast.
If I could see some Froyo on this thing that might give me more incentive to continue using it vs. the EVO!
My question, when is Froyo going to drop?
According to samsung uk it is end of september. Not sure if it includes epic, but it does say all networks so im assuming they mean all, not just UK networks.
source: http://twitter.com/samsungukmobile/status/19827474965
if you dont like the phone for the above reasons now. Froyo is not going to change it.
Froyo and subsequent updates may change gps, and 3g data usage, and increase speed. But there wont be drastic increases in battery life. It will feel the same in your hand.
Basically go back to the Evo.
I on the other hand like the phone a whole, and overall way happier with this then the evo. I'd like froyo, but it aint keeping me up at night.
I've only had the Epic for 5 days now, so I am still going to give it some more time. It's my hope that with a nice Innocase from Seidio it'll feel more solid & maybe what I'm looking for is not just Froyo, but more backing from the community with lots more selection on ROMs.
It seems like there doesnt seem to be much interest from members on creating custom ROMs, at least anywhere near the level of the EVO. I mean, I think there's literally one person working on a ROM currently that I am aware of...
I doubt that we will get as much roms as evo, however I don't think we will be left in the dust either. As for why there is only one rom dev rite now is because we don't have a way to flash n restore roms yet. Once we get that I bet development will boom.
Sent from my Epic 4G
i think thats whats going to send me back to the evo..custom roms, kernels, sense. i wish htc had a super amoled, humming processor, 30 fps 720p, 60 fps screen, and an awesome keyboard :/..for sprint
Better than half of the evo roms are to remove sense and its framework. Fortunately touchwiz is very easy to remove but in the end that means we have less need of roms.
What do people ask for on the evo forums?
Aosp dialer. Got it
Remove rosie. Never had it
Sense widgets. Launcher pro plus
Fix the input lag. Don't have it
Fix the fps. No issue here.
Swype apk. Preinstalled.
Why is scrolling laggy? No issue on the epic.
The epic needs a radio update (the evo had 3) to help with reception and battery, a gps firmware upgrade and a fix for the file attaching lag on 3g.
Other than that its a pretty solid device.
The evo has far more that needed fixing and even on froyo still doesn't feel as fast as the epic on 2.1. The evo needs custom roms because the shipping version ****ing sucks.
We will get roms and kernels. There are already two kernels out and roms will come once the recovery is fixed.
While I love my Epic, I still haven't fallen IN LOVE with it like I did with my Nexus.
But there isn't any other phone on the market that appeals to me, and definitely nothing else on Sprint that I'd choose over the Epic.
I'm not one of the people who thinks *froyo will fix ALL PROBLEMS* but I AM hoping 2.2 comes out by the end of September and hopefully some gps and system tweaks.
We can only hope.

This ^^ a million times over. he pretty much hit the nail on the head.
The Evo NEEDED custom roms. Like whoa. There were SO many issues with it. I rooted that beast ASAP to get that phone up to speed. I haven't rooted my Epic yet. I have no need to. If you don't like touchwiz, load up Launcher Pro. It will be faster than Launcher Pro on the EVO with 2.2 (I know, because I have an EVO with Cm6 sitting right next to me).
The Epic will have rom support, dont you worry. And we will get 2.2 eventually.... but I'm in no hurry. A small fix for the GPS would suit me just fine. Maybe a radio update. Lord knows the EVO had enough radio updates and OTA updates to get it where it is now.
I'm getting great battery life. Try juice defender, got 20 hours before I needed a charge. I made 3 calls, some texts, light web use, and listened to pandora on my way to and from class.

Hi,
I got mine Epic on Sept.2nd and so far I have noticed that the battery life depends on what you do.
On the days when I was busy with my regular staff and did not pay attention to my phone more then checking email, few text msgs, some web surfing, listening music and light game play (while waiting in the restaurant) it (battery) lasted for 12 hrs from full charge.
On the day when I was in the office and turned 4G on (yeh, they turned in on in the Rhode Island!) battery lasted less then 4 hrs and kept loosing juice even when I plugged it into the USB charger. All I have say to that is WTF!
Using Wi-Fi and playng games also cause extended battery use.
Have to note that the sales person, who sold me the phone, installed Automatic Task Killer application for me which seems to be doing it's job
I came from the iPhone after three years (I had the original, the 3G, and the 3GS). I had the EVO for a week to try it out, and then returned it and waited all summer for the Epic.
I really like it, but I kind of wish Sprint had a Galaxy S device that was more a clone of the... Galaxy S.
The iPhone was sleek and solid, and I used it with a case that made it a bit bulkier and heavier. Which was fine. But I don't really see the urgent need for keyboards on app phones nowadays. I was very fast and efficient typing on my iPhone (the text prediction on that keyboard is awesome, and I'm surprised to find that it's way better than the Android software keyboards I've tried). I'm about as fast, if not faster, with Swype, and I've only been using it less than a week. It's not really the bulkiness of the keyboard that bothers me, it's the lack of solidness it gives the phone.
When I click the button to lock or unlock it, the sliding mechanism separates a bit. It's very annoying and lacks that solid feel that the iPhone or EVO had. But other than that, it's a great phone. It's fast, got a great display, the battery life is much better than the EVO's, and it's light. I just wish it had more of a "solid" feel.
(I thought about switching to the EVO, but the lackluster graphics chip, the artificial capping of graphics output to 30fps, only decent performance out of the processor, and crappy battery life are non-starters.)
what is it about froyo that makes you want to ditch the epic?

Ok well first of all, when you aren't using 4G, turn it off to save battery. Having WiFi, GPS, 4G and Bluetooth running when all you need is GPS in a non-4G area is extremely stupid. Moral of the story is when you aren't using it, TURN IT OFF! Also, the stock USB cord from Samsung is terrible, so invest in a new one asap. Plugging the usb cord into a usb socket will only trickle charge your device, so I would suggest plugging into the wall charger that came with your phone as it will charge MUCH faster and you can still use it while it is charging without it going down significantly.
People complaining about lack of ROMs and what-not, take a look around. There are already plenty of options out there and this phone has only been available for a month!! If you would like something in your ROM that isn't on this website, quit complaining and learn how to make your own. It also really astonishes me how someone could actually want to switch from an Epic to an Evo. The battery life issue isn't even relevant in this case, as the Evo is just a battery hog plain and simple. Stop whining, download JuiceDefender, get a custom ROM and kernel with a battery tweak such as removed DRM and undervolt, and see the difference for yourself. No offense Evo users, but the Epic takes all of your problems and solves them flawlessly.
And if for some reason you still think there aren't enough custom ROMs out there, take a look at some stuff from noobnl, the king of the Epic in my opinion. And then be amazed at this.
*P.S. noobnl you are the man, I will donate for sure whenever cm6 is out*
*And another thing, Froyo was supposed to be available at the end of September, which it clearly isn't. Until you hear otherwise, just wait because it is looking like it's going to be a while*

IS the epic worth it yet?

Im going to be coming over to the Epic from the hero. Just wondering if it is worth it or not yet. I still see there are issues and all, but I dont mind that. As long as samsung is diligently working on a fix. unlike HTC, I hope samsung is a tad better.

That's debatable - Samsung's history is not great in fixing things.
That said, as a new Epic owner myself, I do feel like some people are getting a little crazy about a few issues that for most people are going to be relatively minor or even unnoticed. The two issues that come up a lot are GPS and the 3G upload speed. Both of these *seem* to be relatively simple fixes; the GPS issue just seems to be relying on outdated data cache (solution: flush the cache), while the upload speed seems to have been broken with an earlier software update... meaning it should be easy enough for them to fix it again. *Should be* being the key phrase. If Samsung doesn't see the cost benefit from doing so, then they will just keep advertising and selling the phone as is.
In actual practice, I haven't yet run across a situation where these issues have really affected me, though it does annoy me that I can't really do video calling if I wanted to, and that if I shot a video and wanted to directly upload it to YouTube or something, I probably couldn't really do that either. But these are hypotheticals; these are not things I normally do every day. As for GPS, I've been using it for turn-by-turn directions and haven't had any problems, though I know what the problem actually is and that I might run into it at some point. But my dedicated GPS unit had this same issue and I dealt with it for the first year that I owned it (at which point it too received an update... that I paid $80 for).
I'm still in my return window but there isn't really a phone I'd want to return the Epic for. I need a keyboard and the only other phone that really appeals to me is the Droid 2, but I don't want to pay extra for Verizon's plans. So I'll probably just keep the Epic and hope they fix the issues; it's not like they're real killers the way I use the phone. Overall this is a great phone. Sucks up juice a little more than I'd like, but it's insanely fast, has a screen that might even be *too* good (the screen uses most of the battery, and I don't need perfect black levels on my phone), has the best keyboard available on a phone right now, and is generally just a pleasure to use as long as your usage pattern doesn't run into those couple issues it has.

Why does everyone say that they can't do video calling?
I constantly Fring camchat with my friend on her Evo on 3G. She says the video quality isn't perfect on her end, but its never prevented me from video calling! Even on low bars (1-2 bars) i still can comfortably have a conversation over the webchat.

Yes.
Not if u plan on using 4g indoors.

I think this phone is great, the gps is good enough but it could be better, I never use the gps inside my house, so I don't really care the indoor, now once I step outside it only takes couple second to lock me.
About the 3g, well I have the same issue but most of the time I'm in a wifi (House, work) so I don't really care about it, but I would be nice if they have some fix to it...I don't get 4g neither in house and work, so don't care about it either.
The I came from the TP2 and just android itself made me jump to this phone, I really hate the keyboard compare to the tp2, so far I haven't use video calling from phone to PC which is what matters to me (please skype hurry up).
The screen on this phone is just great!!! Perfect for movies (not from the Hub, too expensive) I got the movie from my bro hd2 and they look great, now I need to get avatar from my friend I see myself using the phone for movies so much but whenever I want to its totaly worth it.
For games, well its fast! The response to me its awesome, I don't usually play on my phone but I just download a game Caligo Chaser and its a very addictive game (rpg), but the graphics on the game looks very good on the Epic.
I would say keep the Epic, its a good phone, i will be keep her for a good 1 year and that's when my upgrade is due and I'll get a new one, just like I did with my tp2. The problems with the epic are so minimal compare to other phones, every phone that have release will always have problems, and that's how it always will be. I hope sammy won't take too long to fix it tho.

You won't notice the gaming difference until you load up toonwarz or another graphically intense game. I believe most 2D games will run the same on most phones with a relatively new processor... though it goes without saying that everything looks great on the SAMOLED screen
Thanks guys. I dont plan on doing any uploading or 4g tethering inside my home. just using the internet at work etc.
Also kinda sucks on the battery life. What are people getting roughly with battery life?
Im also coming from the hero to the epic becuase of the physical keyboard. I cannot stand the lag on hero's keyboard. Is there any lag etc with the physical keyboard?

I came from the Hero as well. Trust me, you'll be satisfied. I was running Darchstar's Cyanogen and whatever the nfiniteFX ROM was on my Hero and I THOUGHT I didn't notice any keyboard lag, but coming to the Epic, I realize I was completely wrong. There is no lag anywhere on this phone as far as I am concerned.
Just what I wanted to hear. haha One thing I did notice is that the hero lags up in general after a while IMO. Does the epic seem to do that so far?
I to came from a Hero, loved that little phone, the Epics screen is just. Insane to say the least. The camera quality to top notch, better than the Evos, I have done personal tests and have seen this. The battery life could be better but with updates those will help, its still a very new phone!
Well it's pretty much the best phone on the market right now. That said, there are issues. Make sure before you take your phone home that the capacitive buttons work. They either do or don't in most cases anyway.
I had 2 bad ones and an evo before switching to this on. Some people including myself have noticed image retention but i think thats a rare issue with the epic. Also the GPS is not good until the froyo update (hopefully). All that aside this is the best phone i have owned. Google Navigation works pretty well though and endomondo tracks very well as well.
I hope this helps.... Like I said i also had the Evo and once you see the Epic screen you wont like anything else. My new one is pretty solid and I 'm happy with it. I just want the flipping update already.

I'm getting about 14 hours with regular use. I could probably stretch that if I needed to. If I use it really heavily, including navigation, I might only get 8-10 hours.
In regular use that's long enough for me to go through a normal day, come home and just start charging it for the night once it gets really low.
But this is the first phone I've owned that I've actually bought a car charger for, just in case. If I see it getting low during the day, I will charge it on my way home from work.
This is not great, but my wife's iPhone is actually worse. She can't make it through a full day no matter what she does. Her phone is charging right now and it's 7:30PM; that's pretty normal for her. With me, it's not a regular thing to do that, it's only if I've been playing with it all day.
Also, like all phones the battery takes a few cycles to show an accurate charge. So when you first get the phone, it seems REALLY bad. I got like 5 hours on my first charge. But over time the gauge gets more accurate and you figure out little tricks to maximizing the battery (like dark wallpaper; bright pixels use a lot more power on an amoled screen), and it improves a lot.

Nexus s vs MT4G i have both. my opinions

If your like me you are having a hell of a time deciding which phone to get/keep. Well I happen to have both and after almost a week with each. Here is my opinion, and why. maybe it will help some of you out.
I am writing this in the nexus forum as to not flame or upset mt4g users, so obviously my choice is to keep the nexus. Hopefully people considering either phone will see this.
I consider myself the average user. Dont care about + or - 200 pts on quadrent (diff between the device) or the quickest update (as long as **** works, I can wait a couple weeks for the updated Maps...) I care more about the look, feel, camera, battery life, and pleasure I get from the device.
Having personal experience with both phone. The only reason I could ever see someone getting the mt4g over the nexus is if you really need more than 16g of space available to you, or you live in seattle (which I do) and you really need that 7.6megs
I'll start with look. I like both phones. but I love the seemless look of the nexus. It look sleek, modern, and feels light WHILE KEEPING a very sturdy feel. If that was a concern of yours... dont let it be. The phone is infact very solid feeling.
Camera: This is where I thought the mt4g would have a slight edge cause of the HD. I was wrong. I took video in my house with both phones at the same time. played them the same time split on my 61" tv and view them fully blown up by themselves on the tv. and to my surprise, for whatever reason the image quality on NS every bit as good. Also I feel the color on the vid and pics was better on the NS. Again. surprised by this...???
internet speed: I have a 4g tower right outside my window that give my mt4g 3.6m. my nexus also gets around 3.6. Again, not a real technical guy. Dont know why they get the same, but there it is. Fact is I mostly use apps. DUH. they rarely require 1m to run lightning fast. (but i'll take the extra 2.6 for the occasional browsing) 4G for me is a moot point and useless unless you do a lot of hotspotting, or just love running speedtest apps all day and brag to your friends. Besides, at some point. your internet speed is gonna be waiting for your processor while browsing and i'm gonna bet its well before 7megs on these phones... I have a 50meg comcast wifi connection at my house. Admittedly, I haven't run tests. But I fail to see any difference between my 50m wifi vs my 3.6m cell tower. hence why I dont bother turning on wifi when at home....
Battery life: this is the most obvious difference. I dont care what anyone says. the mt4g lasts me 3/4 of a day at best. period. If you want to turn off all your widgets, background data, 3g/4g speeds and maybe make it a full 12 hours go ahead and get the mt4g. I know people claim they do, and maybe I got a bad battery. but my mt4g wouldn't do it... the nexus goes all day, and I plug it in at night. Wish it could last 2 days like my last phone, but hey...
finally the screen. the mt4g screen is nice, and supposedly better than most phones, but the NS screen just embarrass it. (whether you have the "good or bad" mt4g screen)(a common problem if you read the mt4g forum)
I was a little long winded, but hey... After having both phones, the choice was clear. except for those few people that need more than a 7.6m connection, and more than 16g of hard drive. the choice for me is now very clear. NS all the way.
Glad you made the right choice. (The big thing for this phone though is it will get updates a lot sooner than everyone else like the mytouch 4g having 2.2 and the nexus s having 2.3.1)
I have a ns an my fiance has a mt4g an i definitely like the ns better but the mt4g is an awesome phone as well
I also find the mytouch real buttons can never be compared to the sexy capacitive buttons of nexus s. but they have the GENIUS button ( )
Try turn on wifi at home, I get up to 17.20mb down. It does't make a big difference while browsing or using apps compared to the 3.0mb from tmobile really.
I have the MT4G and my brother has the Nexus S, i had all intentions of returning my phone and picking up a Nexus S when I first heard about them coming out but honestly I just cant get myself to do it. I love having a dedicated camera button, real buttons, trackpad wake, and the build quality is just so superior. I bought my phone from Costco so have 90 days to return, still have about a month left, but for now I just cant get myself to switch. I do love the screen though, I used to have a Vibrant.
Battery life isnt the best but it does last me from 7am when I unplug it to 10pm when I plug it back in. My gfs mytouch 4g with a different rom has crazy battery life, much better then mine, even when i use the same rom as hers.
I too dont really care about the 4g aspect and would consider myself a typical user
I'm also having a hard time deciding which to keep, love the Nexus S ,but for some reason the MT4g is alot smoother in the browser, especially with really intensive web pages.Makes me wonder if the MT4g browser is hardware accelerated.
I'm with you. I played with a MT4G for a while and decided to go with the Nexus S. I also kept a Nokia N8 for a couple of weeks, a Dell Venue Pro for a few days and owned a N900 for a year. While I miss the multi-tasking & web-browsing of the N900, the N8 and DVP were quickly returned.
cool guys... yeah. some people just like the mt4g better. it was a tough decision. again. I'm not sold on the build quality being better with the mt4g. i think it may "feel" better, with the cold steal from the back plate. But I think they are both built to last. unfortunately I dont have the balls to put them to a drop test
BTW. the genius button is a moot point cause I have a search button that does absolutely everything the genius button does. (text dictation, maps, web, etc.etc)I guess t-mobiles marketing really paid off here (making people think they are getting something other phones and carriers aren't. kudos t-MO)
yeah... I'm not sure about the browser speed. like I said. I'm not that worried about testing or having 1/4 sec better browser times... just isn't an issue for me. But maybe your right and the mt4g is a little faster...
I agree that the mt4g is a great phone. just not as good as the nexus

this is already been discussed, the nexus s browser has a bug that is not taking advantage of the graphics acceleration. an update will fix it like it did for the galaxy s. you just have to wait for it and it will be smooth as butter.

Re :Genius Button
Having used the Mytouch Slide and now the G2 the one big thing I miss about the genius button is the Driving Mode. You can listen to a text, compose a reply and have it read back to you, and send it all without touching the phone.
Voice Actions is close but in the same situation it requires you to read the message, hit a button to reply, read the message to check it, and manually hit send.
It all comes down to the screen for me. The CPUs in all the top-end phones are more than capable at this point, and most of the internal hardware is largely undifferentiated. But the vast majority of my time spent using my phone involves looking at the screen, not the backplate or a camera button or on a TV via HDMI.
I'll take a crappy looking phone with a gorgeous screen over a beautiful phone with a crappy screen any day of the week.
I've had both phones too, while the NS feels nicer i don't see the real point in getting a high end phone right now, Motorola Atrix, the new Samsung 4.5" eats the NS for breakfast any day.
I got the MT4 because it has a faster cpu which makes web browsing smoother and a lot cheaper so i can save moneys for the next wave of dualies.
The NS is still a nice phone if you want google and all that but the new dualies looks very promising and i'd rather have the latest hardware than whatever google can offer, which at this point i believe is not much 2.3 has been a huge disappointed for me.

Check this video after min 5:00 and see how bad the NS is doing at web browsing, since android GUI is not gpu accelerated the cpu is doing all the force. BTW the desire hd has the same cpu found in the mt4. Dual Core is going to make the NS into a 2nd tier android device. $530 plus tax is a lot to pay for a 2nd tier device if you ask me.
NS owners act like they have the best phone in the world, however i have a feeling that a lot of these will pop up in the marketplace very soon.
Pure android experience or not, pretty much any phone can be rooted and delete the bloatware.

I dont even get what your doing in this forum then? this site has what seems like a hundred phones. I've never been in a forum of a phone i dont own or am thinking of owning. you obviously dont care for the NS. why are you here?
The NS is as fast or faster than any phone out right now. right out of the box, the mt4g might beet in in quadrant by 200. big deal. so the second fastest phone and the only one with NFC is an outdated piece of crap cause in 4 to six months a duel core phone will be coming out?
My NS and any other 1ghz phone is plenty fast for me and most people. (160,000 android devices sell every day) so I guess those people are all idiot as well?
I just dont get the point of you being here? I dont see you calling out people in the mt3g slide for purchasing an inferior phone. its probably still selling better than the NS.
If you want to be a hardware whore. that's your business. Most of use were probably N1 or worse phone owners before our NS purchase. And I'm fine with that upgrade. My phone broke and I didn't want to wait 4+ months to get a new one
And not to do my own flaming on phones that aren't out yet. But i'm sure the switch over to duel core isn't going to be as smooth as I'm sure your hoping. I would be prepaired for some issues on launch devices... (hopefully not. but things rarely go smooth with new tech.)
I don't know why the need to use harsh words in a phone discussion, but that shows your level of maturity, you can't even spell
