Is it possible that we can get this feature/app?
I really hope it will be as simple as installing the apk from the international version like on the HD2
Yea cause I don't want to pay for pdanet when Froyo has the feature already for free so hopefully it is that easy.
1. Root the phone
2. Add this
3. ???

Can anyone specify which version at the above linked site works w/ the Vibrant? I've tried 2.02 and 2.05pre on my rooted Vibrant and neither works.

A person in the rooting thread said that version 2.0.1 works on his rooted Vibrant. Third one from the top here:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
Please let us know your results as I'll be trying this out on Thursday most likely. Thank you in advance for letting us know.
I'm also going to try this Thursday just wish some1 can tell me how to adb the vibrant if it's any different from other phones cause I just got the drivers just need to know if i just need to run the command prompt adb application
I'd prefer the Samsung WiFi hotspot app, where is that .apk?
please let us know if this works, I took it from Modaco r2

Thank you for checking and letting us know. Well, that goes that idea. Can anybody else verify whether Wireless Tether 2.0.1 does indeed work fine on a rooted Vibrant? Confirmation will be appreciated.
Has anybody checked whether Wireless Tether 2.0.1 works on rooted Vibrants? Please let us know.....
Thank you in advance.
I have tried all of the versions of WiFi Tether (starting at 2.0) and none of them work. The log shows "Unknown device-type".
If anyone hears of one that works, let me know and I will try it out.
Wifi hotspot working on Vibrant T959!
I'm sure that this has already been posted somewhere in this forum, but I was so excited that I decided to pick the first one I saw and share my fix.
1. Root your phone
2. Google search: Android wifi tether
3. Should be the first link for android-wifi-tether - Project Hosting on Google Code
4. On the right side in the box is Featured Downloads. Select the latest version, at this point in time its ver 2.0.5-pre11.apk
5. Download and install
6. Run app, it will ask for SU permissions when you start and stop tether.
Notes: Encryption works and just for kicks I would say turn on Access Control(MAC filter).
I am new to the Android world and this forum. Please excuse me if I am a little giddy, but I didn't think that I would ever be able to do this!!
Check sticky
I am using Wi-Fi Tether version 2.0.5-pre6, it worked on my stock Vibrant and works with the official JI6 update as well. (both with root of course).
JI6 Rooted, Wi-Fi Tether v. 2.0.5-pre9 confirmed working here. Hope that helps!
Mmm 3 month necro bump...
Anyway, I use the MobileAP version posted here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756804
Works fine for me. There's both pre and post JI6 version for Vibrant there.
Search is your friend.
Are you rooted?. IT will appear in Settings>Wireless and Networks>Mobile AP Settings

I just rooted my phone the other day and of course the night I go out and leave the phone at home the g/f has to use my phone. Well it said OTA and she thought it was something I didn't finish and, yup u guessed it she gave me the update. I lost root as you know and now is there any way for me to get root back at this point?. I have a HTC Espresso 3g slide with T-Mobile and any help would be appreciated a lot. I was all set to do my ROM today and now this. Go Figure...
Not At this time no.

i forgot where i read this, but i read in theory that the Droid X method to root should work on any previous android phones, jus needs to be changed for the phone..
This method i did use for my N1 and it worked great! some one was able to make it work for the n1 hopefully some can do the same for the Slide
I looked into this method and yes it should work I have the files and ill upload them and post them in a new thread and see if we can get it to work.
I works off of some exploit in the working android system to trick the device into trusting the su and superuser.apk and busybox as android systems files and installing them, has to do with bluetooth and wifi exploit it least that's what I understood

Ace I have a quick question if I may. Since I didn't RoM my phone before it was updated I was curious if you just lost root or did it put you back to stock 2.1 - update1? I am new to this and any place I can learn a few things I try to. We all had to start someplace

It was already on stock firmware, i manually updated my phone since i was having trouble rooting it. It wouldnt say offline in rec mode, but i tried it after the update with a new sd card and it says offline now...But it doesnt matter since root is blocked anyway..

Well I have been looking everywhere looking for a fix for this and it seems right now that you and I are the only ones that this has happened too. I'm sure there are others. Just for a lack of something to do I have been trying all sorts of things but nothing has worked so far. If I find a fix I will post it here to help out of course. Sooner or later someone will come up with one since all the phones being sold now or people that haven't rooted yet will need new root.zip files I would think.

YUP this method would be great!, but to let you know this method does not fully install BusyBOX! learned this yesterday lol
when your in terminal or adb shell and do "cp" cmd it will give you not found.. but i found this script to fully install it after root
http://zedomax.com/blog/2010/07/07/android-hack-how-to-install-busybox-on-your-android/
if you wanted to do a "cp cmd" you would have to do "busybox cp"
I just posted a hot to in dev section that will walk you thru downgrading and easy root vs loop method.

You should just find it in the marketplace? Is it not there for you?
Said something about updating kernal and wouldn't run.

I wonder what kernel version you have.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
It has to be the right version of wireless tether. Might have to get somewhere other then market. When i checked market, the version wasnt the one i needed. Google wireless tether for froyo.
or you can use 3G mobile hotspot for free, search for "howto tether natively" on google and its the first link
its better imo but if you cant figure it out there is the above option.
i actually had the same problem. i was fooling around with it for hours last night and couldn't get it to work.
i'm using pre8 but it still doesn't work. was using it in adhoc mode with encrpytion turned off and no access-control, but no luck.
i even tried loading bin file from the evo 4 system dump but that didn't work either.
anyone get this to work yet??
The pre 8 version has been working perfectly for me.
Also installed it on another phone last night and it worked fine there as well.
I uninstalled the previous version first.
Specs:
Virtuous 2.5
Radio 2.15
hydra 1.15

Because it doesn't work, sprint did something special for it not to work, I forget what it is
you try this one?
I had the same issue. I typed out the fix on another thread. Basically you have to use the ruu to go back to 2.1 then find the rooted 2.2 stock img with recovery and apply that from the updated 2.2 root guide. This will fix your problems and work in any of the roms
afterward.

Go back to 2.1?
I believe you need to be rooted in order for this to work. If you are on just froyo, I dont think it will work.
I have rooted it for a while now. Going back to 2.1? Really?
This happened to me as well. After searching the answer was to go to an older version of wifi tether.
What worked for me was the pre11 apk in the link below.
code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
Pre14 didn't work for me had to get 15

Pre15 works fine with froyo. Maybe you could try getting the latest version and installing it. I know this seems like a crazy idea, but how about you give it a go anyhow.
I've tried many different versions, including the most recent one, & no luck, I think that it could be some of my settings. Any ideas?
One thing I just remember, when on 2.1 it asked me for the superuser permission, now it hasn't. Could that be it? How do I give the permission without asking for it?

make sure the version of wifi-tether you use supports your device.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
The above link shows the download and corresponding version that you should use for Epic. I used the lastest version pre15, and it works fine on my 2.2.1 froyo DK28 firmware.
I don't know which firmware are you using, but the pre15 should support the latest froyo
I'm using PRE13 and its working fine for me, used it a couple of times already.. here you go hope this link works.

That's my guess but not sure. one way to check if you lost your root is:
On your phone,
1. go to market, download and install Terminal Emulator
2. run Terminal, then at the prompt line, type "su" (don't include quotation marks) and then hit enter on keyboard
3. if the system says "su not found", that means you lost your root
This may be my stupid way to verify my rooting status. Other experienced users may have better way to do it

Ok. My buddy at work has a hero running 2.1
I rooted his phone using the z4 root, installed recovery using rom manager.
main reason for wanting to root was to be able to use wireless tether, so I installed it but can't get it to work at all.
app starts fine but when you hit the button to start tethering it says its starting but it won't send or receive any info, and I can't detect it sending out any kind of wireless signal.
Thought busybox might be the issue so I installed the newest version from the market. 1.18.somethingsomething.
Didn't work, still nothing.
googled the issue I'm having and can't find a fix. I'm using the newest version from the market, even tried a old version 1.61 I believe.
I'm out of ideas. Can anyone help?

when you started the app did you get a window asking for superuser permissions? if not then you are not rooted. I know that some of the carriers recently pushed an OTA update that blocked z4root's rooting method.

yes, thanks for asking, i should have stated that in my original post. I apologize. currently i have adfree, root explorer, and titanium all running with no issues on his hero.
if your on a sense 2.1 rom you need to use wireless tether v1.6 from google code this is due to the kernal in sense 2.1 roms if your on 2.2 or above v2.7 should work on almost all computer os's except ubuntu 11.0.4 due to a kernal issue. but usb tether works fine on ubuntu. also u can try wireless tether pre 3.0.14 from google code witch will work on almost all roms except for kifno sense roms and liquid sense roms. just please make sure if your on a 2.1 sense rom be sure to go to settings settup mode and select hero cdma then go down to lan settings and enable routing fix for hero.

LOL....The Ad Hoc connection should still be present, just can't connect to the internet. I know this because I am a dope and always start my tether without starting my 3g and realize what I did when I can't open up a webpage. It's more then likely what Bierce was saying with the different Wireless Tether versions between 2.1 & 2.2 or a setting / script on the receiving device. With my Nook running CM7, by default it can connect to Ad Hoc, but running Honey Comb I have to change out the wifi supplicant to switch from infrastructure to Ad Hoc, and with my old iPaq I had to go into wireless / settings and enable Ad Hoc in the list of supported network types.
