Camera issue - G1 General

I got a G1 from a friend and it's working great, except for the camera. When I take a snapshot it works usually, but sometimes the camera app freezes. I have to press the home button to get out. I rooted my G1 and tried many different roms, and all have the same reaction.
It seems to freeze more often in dark shots then areas that are well lite. Is the physical camera bad, or is this a software issue?
The rom I'm using is Super E 1.0.3, and I have radio 2.22.23.02 with Danger SPL and RA Recovery 1.7.0.

Have you wiped your phone at least once after upgrading your SPL/Radio to be used with CM-6?

Camera causes phone reboot

I searched.
Anybody else having this issue? I took a picture last week on Haykuro's G build, no problem. Then a day or two later I tried another, but when starting the cam app, the buttons wouldn't do anything and I wasn't getting a live preview onscreen. I still had a preview in the top left of the last pic I took.
So, I decided to give H a try since everyone seems to love the cam on H, and G is having market problems.
When I tried to use the camera or camcorder on H, it would reboot the phone.
Reflashed back to G. Camera reboots the phone on G now, too.
I wiped 3 times during flashes. I'm using A2SD versions.
I'm going to try the barcode apps as soon as I can get them re-installed.
Any help?
TIA
Well, it looks like it's probably hardware related. Barcode scanner and ShopSavvy work until I try to start the camera. Then it reboots the phone.
Anybody have a suggestion before I replace it?
i have similar issue, when using camera with some other apps, it would reboot the phone when using it or close it.
Did you find a fix for it?

seem to have killed autofocus

well, i'm not really sure what i did but i seem to have managed to stop autofocus from working. this is a real problem because it means the barcode scanners can't focus.
i haven't been monkeying around in root or anything (obviously) just installing and uninstalling random apps, but i'm at the bottom of the android learning curve and don't really know how to begin trouble shooting this.
any advice on where to begin would be appreciated.
thanks
I actually think I may have a very similar issue (as it ONLY happens when using a bar code scanning app) but I thought it was just me. Is this what is happening to you...
When I am using a bar code scanning app, the camera starts focusing on the image and just as it gets in focus, it goes out of focus again and then repeats this cycle endlessly. Sometimes it is able to get a lock before it focuses again but not always. I thought it might be a low light issue. I tried turning up the light and it wasn't much different though.
I have this problem, too. I can't focus the camera, it makes the sound, but there is no change at all in the focus when I tap to focus. Also, barcode reader / shop savvy is useless, as the focus on the barcode never occurs.
It seems like this happened when I went to 2.2 via one of many ROMs I've tried.
I suppose it could just be a hardware issue?
What rom and radio are you guys using?
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
Virtuous 2.7 with the default adrynalyne Kernel
Radio is 2.15.00.07.28
in virtuous 2.7 the focus on my camera sux, especially for night pics w/ flash.
radio 2.05.00.06.11
Just sharing my two cents. I'm running virtuous 2.7 with king's kernal #4, rooted with s-off and 2.15 radio, also on 2.2. Just checked camera after reading this thread and not experiencing any probs thus far. Auto focus working, using touchscreen to take photos.
Im a newb, so I didn't do any modifications other than following directions on this site for rooting, adding roms, etc.. Not any help to you guys, sorry.
I tried downgrading back to stock 2.1, then applied the OTA Update.zip to 2.2, still no luck with the camera focus.
I have a new DInc coming to me under a warranty claim with Verizon.
Hold 'er steady...
Same story for me - won't 'lock on' to the image in order to scan the barcode ~ stock camera. Also tried the EVO camera available in the one of the ROM Manager d/l sections - not much different - for me.
Anecdotally, oddly, I let someone else try w/ my handset, and it worked for them.
SO...... either they have a more steady hand, or.....

If you have had reboots with Camera try turning off GeoTag

If you have had reboots with the camera try turning GeoTagging off in camera settings and reboot.
This may only be a problem with the Shift based ROMs or Sense 2.1 or possibly only MikG's 2.x series.
I don't follow every ROM and other folks might be running into similar issues that MikG 2.x did.
YES, I KNOW SOME FOLKS HAVE NOT HAD an Issue on MikG 2.x.
This thread is to help folks THAT HAVE !!!
It has worked around the problem for a couple folks.
By the way, one of my camera reboots happened hours later while using Google navigation.
Which is what gave me the hint to try shutting off GeoTagging.
Since shutting it off I have used Camera and Navagation for several days with no issue.

Camera Problems

Hey guys, none of my cameras are working. When i hit the camera button the camera app turns on but the screen is white. I've tried searching but everything comes up related to a discolored camera. Ive tried flashing many roms, fixing permissions, tapping on the camera. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
Do you have an Evo 4g? You said you "hit the camera button" but the Evo doesn't have a hardware camera button.
If it's happening across multiple roms, including stock, it's probably a hardware problem.

You haven't flashed a Froyo kernel on a Gingerbread ROM, have you? The issue you describe is a well-documented side-effect of doing just that. If not, I would flash back to stock and see if it works. If it does, then you know it's a software issue. If it doesn't, then I would agree with plainjane.
Did you ever get a working answer to this? I'm having the same problem. My camera won't open, it force closes before going anywhere beyond a black screen. The night before, it would at least open. The front facing camera worked but the rear facing camera seemed stuck on solarize (which I had no options to change). Seems like a software problem so I updated to the latest deck rom, updated hboot, pri, nv, wimax - now fully updated and still no fix. Tried installing miui apk and still same.
If I don't get this camera fixed, I'll have to unroot. Not looking forward to doing that but if it's between having root or camera, I'm going to pick the camera.
Hope someone can help before I have to go to such drastic measures.

Rooting won't break your camera.
I would flash back to a rooted stock ROM, and confirm whether camera works or not on it. If it does, then you know the issue is in fact software related (which it doesn't sound like it is). If it doesn't, then you have a hardware failure.
A corrupt sd cars gave me the same problem. Try re-formatting it.

I took it to Best Buy and they told me it's a sensor issue. My phone gets replaced so it's all good.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I tried them all before deciding it must be a hardware issue and going to BB.
I know this is a few months late, but I recently had a similar problem. I would click the camera icon and the screen would just go black and then f/c on me. I was running ICS roms, so I flashed to Decks GB rom, Mik 3.1 rom and had the same problem. So I figured it was a hardware problem.
I decided to open up my evo and take a look inside and found the camera housing was not seated completely. Pushed it back down and it has been working for days now
I guess it probably jarred loose when I dropped it or bumped it or something.
Thought I would share, because it was very frustrating for me, so I figured it might be bothering someone else.

Weird Camera behaviour - Camera not working

So, I'm experiencing this weird camera issue. The phone says taht it could not start the camera or that the camera is already in use. But then, if I turn off the device for something like a day or two, once I turn it on again the camera starts working properly until I reboot the phone. I already tried to flash stock rom, firmware, whatsoever, but it didn't work. I also tried may custom roms, but the behaviour is always the same. Would you have any suggestions? Right now I'm running A12 Pixel Extended ROM.
