Well finally! G2 looks like a replacement for my 2 yr old G1 (Which is still running like a champ!) Tho I see the issues on G2 rooting. I was wondering Im 60% ready to order it today and pay 300$ to tmo. I mean rooted G1 is great.. but reasons I did that was for faster speed and apps on SD.. which the G2 does, The only final part was maybe firewalls, blockers and wifi tether which was only via root.
Thoughts from others? I know one day G2 will be rooted fine. But otherwise, anyone else have thoughts from G1 to G2? =)
You saying its a good idea to upgrade to the G2 is like saying..."Is it a good idea to upgrade my fat girlfriend for Megan Fox"?

Not really, those who use a G1 rooted, what are you MISSING in your G2? Im trying to debate do I give in and buy it NOW or wait. I got a itchy trigger finger... I upgraded once and got the HD2 (Which I put on ATT after I unlocked and got energy on it) but I never replaced my G1 which stays on my tmo account. Finally a device I might be able to have MORE fun with. Main thing I want is the wifi tether, tho I guess I could use pdanet and a usb.
What key features would you say scream the most on a G2 that G1 doesnt do? Hows emulators working on it?
I also came from a g1. I was running cm 6.0 so things felt quite similar really as far as UI except at blazing speeds. I do miss all the tweaks that came with custom ROMs however.
The physical phone is taking a little getting used to simply because I have used the same phone for 2 years. Won't take long though. For me, everything is an improvement for the most part.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
I've been using the g1 as my primary/only phone for two years. The only thing that I miss from my G1 is the ability to IPSec VPN into Cisco devices. The wifi tether was nice but I only used that once or twice a year. The fact that the led only lights up to indicate that the phone is charging. It would be nice if it was a multi-color led like on the G1 and could be used for notifications or if the trackpad was multi-color. I wish I could unlock the phone with on of the bottom front keys or the trackpad. Really, all of those are minor except for the VPN, and that wasn't a big enough deal to keep me away from the G2.
The G2 is so superior to the G1 that I can't imagine staying with the G1. I was running Cyanogen 5.0.8 when I switched.
Well so far sounds like HTC made a nice phone that doesnt need a custom rom to make it super sexy awesome. =) That is very good...
Anyone try SNES or NES on it? Im wondering if the games are better. =) (Did they put the 3d app like need for speed up there?)
Anything new the G2 can do that the G1 couldnt or that it can perform better? (Im now at 75% at the point where Ill say screw giftmas and just pay 300$ on my Nov 28th bill lol)
Im using Enoms 1.6 on the G1 btw. (Stick with what works hehe)
I miss the full customization of theming my phone. That will come with root. Other than that, the G2 was a great upgrade from G1. One feature I absolutely love... While talking on the phone on the G1, you would have to double tap or press menu and unlock to access the key pad. With the light sensor on the G2, it pops up automatically as soon as you take the phone away from your ear.
Well thats good, =)
Durability wise, Is this slide design durable you think? Also from when I held it, doesnt seem as cheap or flimsy as the mytouch slide, which I felt was a JOKE.
Hows the camera compared to a HD2 (If anyone has it) I know my HD2 does some real nice ones. The G1.. always had abit of motion blur cause unless you held it so still.. I didnt like taking pics on it.
Any good games the G2 can do? I know on Verizon they had the NFS game that the Iphone had, which was cool with tilt controls. Would love it if the G2 started doing it. Speaking of that.. Does the G2 have better open gl support?
Hello people, I have been playing around with PDAs for a while, my first device was a BlueAngel waaay back when... my last device has been a hero for about 2 years now.
I have recently replaced my old hero with a new one that came with 2.1 from the factory -I suppose- my questions/comments/concerns are:
is there such a thing as too much flashing that can mess up a device? I know that there were 2 versions of the hero out there one with no "With Google" and one with "with google" and there were some diferences between them when you flash stuff,
My last hero was a "with google" but came with the 1.56 whenever I installed 2.1 on it it just went crazy, very very laggy could not make a phone call to save my life. if I flashed any of the 2.2 from cyanogen or anyone else the device worked perfect, it was only when I flashed a Sense 2.1 rom that the device went absolutely crazy. don't know why... apparently no one knows... i guess...
this last hero that I got came with 2.1 from sprint. the device worked AWESOME super fast and could actually make a phone call. so I really think that there is a hardware issue that HTC/Sprint resolved but they wont admit to it... I can see absolutely NO difference between the devices or the ROMS that i flashed on them. its just a big mystery that one device works with sense 2.1 and one does not. until yesterday...
yesterday morning I woke up and my device was out of battery, really odd because It was fully charged when I went to sleep. and I noticed that the device started to behave the same way that my old Hero did with 2.1 could not get it to call anyone or text or anything if you press a key it takes 10 min to respond. and until right now I CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHY! it was working PERFECT super fast and now its not. I flashed NFX Sprint 2.31.651.7 STOCK Deoxed/Odex Update3.1 on wednsday of last week and it was working AWESOME, GREAT WORK nfinitefx45, then it just quit. working awesome 1 day, next week its crap.
so I was wondering if TOO Much flashing brakes the circuits or something (I cant imagine how or why) but maybe its just the ghost in the machine. it was working great!!! im extremely baffled by this. maybe its because some if the flashing I did was with the battery under 30% but I cant imagine this braking it either, maybe the I/O operations check fail when the battery is under 30% and you permanently brake it, i don't know. another thing i noticed is that it queries the network ALL DAY LONG it tries to synch all day long with my gmail account, which it never does, I cant see my contacts. that's why it was out of battery next morning. maybe too much flashing brakes the radio?
today i noticed that it wanted to go out and get 2.32 and update, maybe that's why it was querying the network so much, so I went back to stock 2.31 because it wont update if you have a recovery image, and let it run the update.
nothing. still lags a lot, cant place a phone call or anything.... I am really ready to throw myself out the window cuz I cannot figure it out, maybe I did damage the Hardware some how...
does anyone have any ideas? or has anyone experienced this ??

Go to CM.... it's android 2.2, and there's really no issues with it. It's fast, looks good if you apply a theme, and takes care of all the sense bloat
I have run BLACKMOD_21NOV and it runs great, thats kinda my point, why does it run great on 2.2 and it sucks on sense 2.1, when it came from sprint it was running great on sense 2.1 and now its just crap. I think i might have done something to the hardware because of too much flashing Lol!!! i dont know...

Yeah theres no way to much flashing could possibly break your phone or make it laggy or etc. If that was the case then my phone would have exploded by now as i had my hero since launch date and it has been flashed almost over 1000 times maybe with different roms and radios and other mods and hacks lol. As impaler said sense is great but our heros just are old technology even with an over clocked processor and mods I still dont think its just good enough for sense. Sense runs perfect on a faster phone like an EVO. I used LiquidSense even with all the bloat removed it just wasnt fast enough for my taste, great rom though. Vanilla is just your best bet for the hero and its old hardware it works fast enough and stable. Dirk
yeah it was slow, but I using [email protected] #43 691mhz and it was running great! fast, stable then it broke! hahahaha, any ways thanks for your input. Im gonna mess around some more if not im gonna take it back and probably get the EVO, that sucks cuz I really like the hero, evo is just to dang big! Lol !

Man evo is a little too big for me, as my upgrade is december 1st and my palms are itching for a new phone, its either the evo or samsung epic (which is so sick) but i hear theres other phones coming out before the end of the year. Maybe you could wait a little i hear theres another phone coming out with evo specs and the size or a nexus one, i think its called the HTC KNIGHT or something. Good luck but you might not want to stick with the hero too long if you have the option of taking it back.

Yup, I'm interested in the HTC Knight as well
I forgot to mention that the data keeps connecting and disconnecting and that slows down the device downloading ROM Manager from the market took like 45 min because it was sooo sloow. I dont know if that matters... maybe I'll update my prl and profile..
Yeah I really like the samsung also, but I think that HTC are just more customizable and theres a great comunity out there hacking and craking these devices, the KNIGHT looks sweet!!! yeah Im not going to hang on to the Hero much longer, Im due for an update and I think im gonna get the evo...

Ok I havnt seen or heard anyone talk about this. But I've had this problem with my slide out keyboard since I got the phone. I don't know if I'm typing to fast for it or what. But ill type an entire text then read what I wrote and random letters will be missing from words. This never happend on my g1 I had before I got the epic. I actually catch it when it does it now and its really annoying. I traded the phone for a new one at sprint and it did the same thing even before I rooted and installed a rom on it. Anyone have same issue? I'm really reconsidering this purchase because of this.

Ya. This happens to alot of people due to Samsung not knowing how to code.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
It appears that the input from the keyboard is faster than the phone can process. It's quite annoying.
Yep, I think it happens to almost everyone. Ever since I switched to the gingerbread keyboard it seems to happen less often, but I have no real evidence to back it up.

He isn't wrong technically..as remember, disabling Swype seems to alleviate the issue..so if he is not using Swype and using the Gingerbread keyboard instead..the physical kb would work better lol
Ok so ive seen this thread and another one regarding this issue.. Questions so the solution to miss keys on the hardware keyboard is disabling swype meaning using the standard android keyboard instead? OR deleting swype?
And im surprised there hasnt been a fix for it? but i think once we have official froyo source maybe it will be fixed?
Ok well I just disabled swype and will install gingerbread kb when I get home. Even the slightest bit of change would be better than what I'm dealing with now. Is a pretty good excuse to exchange my phone for a new one every week though haha. I'm surprised the guys at sprint had never heard of this happening. But they had also never seen adw launcher and the unlock screen I had either...

I disabled swype and just got the GB keyboard on my stock 2.1 rooted custom kernal rom and all i must say i really like this GB keyboard.
I will test the hardware kb today and see if it fixes some of the lag
This is also one reason I deleted Swype from my ROM,but I still get missed keys all the time on the hardware keyboard.

Exactly. I should have been more specific and said that by disabling Swype it seemed to help. Several other places in the forum have mentioned that tip.
I definitely understand that the OP was talking about the physical keyboard - I've never had a problem with any on-screen keyboard missing keystrokes.
I never even use the on screen keyboard. I'm no good with it honestly. I had the g1 before this then an lg rumor before that; all of which had keyboards so its all I am used to. Maybe I should learn the onscreen one a little more but isn't the point of having a hardware one is to use it? But disabling swype seems to help slightly and after I post this imma look into installing the gingerbread one. Thanks for the advice though I really appreciate it. Also I am relieved to know I'm not the only one with the issue. I plan on keeping this phone for awhile so hopefully it gets completely resolved in the very near future.

Its 2011, im wondering... does anyone still actually use it? If yes, what do you do and stuff
Good phone.
I use one Nokia with Symbian S60V5 and this wonderful Dream. i have Mod Version: COS-DS-07162011, ANDROID 2.3.4, Still battery drain in 24-36 hours with normal use. On heavy use it resist only 12-14 hours. it is a little slow but still has all that i need.

yes there are lots of people that still use a G1, there are plenty of developers out there still working on roms and everything like myself. im guessing if it was your moms that the device is not yet rooted, so that would be your first step...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1098899
than you can flash any of the latest roms to your device making it 10x better than stock G1
Good for out of country when unlock
I am currently using my G1 actively. It is a good phone to have when you go on vacation to other country. Especially if you have it unlock already. So you do not have to pay international rates when making a phone call. All you have to do is purchase SIM for that country and use it at the local rates.
I've known people who have had it and need a cheap phone so I have mine coming in the mail hopefully around this upcoming Wednesday. I saw that android development still looks pretty strong so until i scrape up enough money for a newer phone lol, Imma basically be using it for mainly texting(though i heard that calls aren't bad on it), and as a smaller version of my Archos IT 101 16GB
still using it
am it becomes the main one I mess with, as it IS the developer phone one.
I just started using it as an upgrade to the HTC vouge
I wonder why the G1 but not the MT3G was kept as a high-activity device
Its amazing how it people are still using it.
As for a developers phone or/and unlocked phone, dont you guys think the Nexus One is good? I mean, its great and unlocked when bought (well... when i bought it)
I still have it and use it sometimes
Hi - I've been given a G1 and I like it - it's my first smartphone. I would like it to be faster.
I've gone thru the Root G1 instructions Step1. When I got to the "Alt S" bit, the update didn't get applied - it said aborted and also I got an error E: can't open/cache/recovery/command.
I carried on thru the rest until 4) when my backup recovery failed consequently after typing the sdcard... bit, the flash recovery button did not light up.
I've done this twice now and it's been the same each time. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks for looking.
Ok Guys - used Alt Root Method #1 - worked like a charm. Thanks to Habitat22.
Still going!
I'm still using a G1 too. I get the wants for one of the dozen of new phones out there all the time and then think why? My G1 does all I need. I love the physical keyboard! With the work of some dedicated devs, it is running Gingerbread just fine and I just ported a new theme for it today.
I can say quite happily me and my G1 will be together for a long time yet. Yes there are new sparkly toys out there but my ikkle ole G1 still plays nicely and does everything I want beautifully so why the hell get rid? I really couldn't even imagine owning another phone I love it that much, the greatest hard keyboard any phone will ever see ever amen EVER!
There is a few things about the G1 you cant get in a new phone. The hard keyboard layout, an actual track ball, and a notification LED.
It calls, texts & emails perfectly. So as long as your not going to run some heavy apps, then really it still is the perfect phone.
sigh let's start the horror story. So I rooted my verizon LG G2 (VS980) phone yesterday using this guide:
http://theunlockr.com/2013/10/25/root-lg-g2-versions-video/
I found that pretty easy so i decide to then be more adventurous and load cyanogenmod 10.2 on my phone since I heard it was officially on nightly release for verizon phones. So then i came across this youtube video explaining how to do this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_s3eO-jvNWk
I make 3 mistakes in this process:
1. i don't do the settings part
2. i don't wipe the phone
3. and most importantly i download the wrong cyanogenmod 10.2 version. I put the 802 international version on it instead of the verizon version.
Now my phone is stuck with fastboot with a black screen.
I can go into download mode and have tried the following guides:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2432476
In this one it gets stuck at 49% loading when i use the verizon version
the second:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448960
here when i start to load it says my device is the wrong model because i loaded the wrong cyanogenmod
Now that i know why my phone wouldn't load the verizon rom (because i had cyanogenmod 802 international). I have successfully loaded the stock 802 rom on my phone. the bad part is the touch screen is all wacky and i can't get into setting to go into developer mode and finally fix my phone.
Any ideas on where i can go from here? If i could just get into developer mode i can restore everything by loading TWRP then loading the cyanogenmod for verizon.
Just an idea, but maybe you could use a mouse via OTG in the meantime.

thanks i didnt know i could use a mouse. I will try to find a cable that will allow me to do that.
I was able to help a few peeps with the same prob get back to stock. Pm me if you need help.
some updates.
I didn't get the mouse to help me around the touch screen. I just memorized where all the new locations where for example the middle of the screen clicked the bottom left
I have been able to get this european 820 stock ROM running on my verizon phone and have it in debugging mode.
All the other flash methods are failing me because i get "different model" error.
I'm currently trying to update my build.prop file so i can get the other flash methods to work since this is the file they are looking at to see if it's ok to flash with the rom you have select. Personally i find that kinda silly. I mean i'm flashing the thing give me an option that say "are you sure you want to do this? you are about to flash your phone with an compatible rom". Yes i'm aware i put the wrong rom on the thing now flash my phone with this one.
Oh it would be great if someone out there could post me their verizon build.prop. Would really appreciate that.
update
don't change the build.prop model number to VS-980. my phone is now in a reboot cycle.
I can get into download mode but i fear that i still won't be able to flash with the right rom because that build.prop is wrong. can i skip this verification step?
I also have twrp running but again it's the European version so the touch screen doesn't work properly. i can't swipe across to do anything even if i wanted to.
I would just do this and start over...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448960

nothing against the OP BUT this is exactly why I DO NOT try to do this stuff. There's really no benefit that the stock ROM on this phone cannot do...and more...and I read so many reports of people turning their beautifully working phones into little black plastic paper weights. Simply not worth the trouble, time, and possible money :silly: to get a little more screen space, or a smaller NAV bar, or whatever.
And then so many people want KIT-KAT...WHY? Will it REALLY be that much better than what this thing can do now? Or will it just introduce BUGS like every other update always does to an android device? If, and when this phone gets an update to KIT-KAT or whatever version they decide upon, and it actually works without new bugs, then I will be pleasantly surprised. Here we have what just might be the best android phone to land on earth so far, and people want to "improve" it??? My $0.02

My $0.02

I can't speak to everyone else's why but I do it because I'm an engineer and here is what i mean by that. Ever since I was a little kid I would mess around with stuff even though I had no clue what i was doing. I remember the first time I took apart a stereo was because our living stereo broke (the CD player wouldn't play anymore and that's what it was used for mostly). I told my mom not to throw it away so I could see if I could fix it. I was maybe 10 at the time so of course she knew i couldn't possibly fix but she let me. In the end I couldn't fix it (hell i had screws left over) but it was just fun looking around and exploring. As I grew I still kept doing the same thing, taking things apart and explore. Sometimes I can improve the thing I took apart other times I completely break it but most of the time I can just put it back the way it was originally. That's my why.

Sounds like my childhood and I'm an engineer aswell.
Software to me is pure magic, but I'm very happy there's people that can code Roms.
Good luck mate.
Once you fix your phone and it's back to stock it will feel better than sex.
Keep stock for a couple of days and that itching feeling of "i need to do something with this" is gonna come creeping back

I feel you pal. But i also got the point of the other guy. But is in OUR vines to mess things around and turn in back. lol. Bout your concern, i think there is a thread here that got it working. Just try searching in Q & A thread. Maybe search "brick"? Read everything you can read. I'll help and comeback when i see it.

I am horribly confused as to why you are an XDA member. :-/

I'm having the same problem and haven't been able to get it to work. As soon as I flash the stock d802 (my phone is really d803 but I had a d802 custom rom on it before) the touch screen goes all weird and my phone keeps restarting.
