PCD Dumps Tons of Hero Stock ROMs - Droid Eris Android Development

Cross posted from the Hero CDMA forum...
Haven't seen this posted, but PCD has created a page with over the wire updates for nearly every carrier... ones even I haven't heard of before.
http://pcdphones.com/our-devices/support/adr6250update
Not sure what is in all of these ROMs, but there may be different baseband versions to pick apart there, perhaps even newer than what Sprint and Verizon are using.
Worth a look for the ROM hackers out there.

Sprint's Hero: possible to flash?

I'm considering Sprint's version of the Hero when it comes out. Will it be possible to flash that one with the custom ROMs found here?
i wouldnt flash with any current roms that are out because that hero is built to run on donut(1.6) not cupcake(1.5)
when the new hero donut roms are avaliable we will see

It's a different device, but some marketingpoeple thought, it sell's better as 'Hero' If they would have given it another name, we would find it in a new section on the xda-forum ...
dbl post. sorry.
@immya - from what i have read so far the Sprint Hero will ship with cupcake. I also had the same question about flashing but I will just have to see if it ships with donut on Fri. morning.
If it doesn't ship with donut we could, theoretically, flash with the other ROMS available correct?
Yes, Sprint's Hero will be shipping with 1.5. http://androidandme.com/2009/10/carriers/more-info-on-the-sprint-ota-problem/
Personally, I think the biggest question is whether or not these ROMs include CDMA support. If they don't, they definitely won't work on Sprint's (or Cellular South's) Hero.
yeah thats what im saying, cupcake doesnt naturally support cdma but one of donuts main features is that it can support both cdma and gsm. so i doubt any sprint support then for the time being
Picking mine up tomorrow morning. I'll search on how to get a dump of the OS so that I can post it up somewhere. If anyone cares to point me to the right link it would be appreciated and get a modified ROM out quicker.
Cheers!
The Sprint Hero is a cupcake build with CDMA support added to it. I would not flash it with a European ROM because you might brick the radio.
OK, got it in hand and have the whole weekend to play
I'm not going to try to flash it, though, just extract for others tinkering, that I may then partake of. Just want to give SOMETHING back to this awesome community.
more then likely there will have to be a "tweaked version" or new roms developed for the sprint hero. usually, on most htc devices, things that are found to work on the gsm version will not work on the cdma i.e roms, radio upgrades etc...
I too just got my Sprint Hero today from Best Buy and would be more than happy to help the devs here by offering my phones data if you guys could just tell me how to dump the necessary info.
I'm betting that the same HTC tools will work to extract the rom from this device whether it's GSM or CDMA. We (CDMA users) use the same tools as the GSM guys in the WinMo world for building ROMs (buildOs, etc.), it's just some of the ROM packages are specific for GSM and some are specific for CDMA.

CDMA Hero's have 2.1 OC with everything working

Seems that the CDMA guys have got overclocking working on 2.1 roms, without making camera broken and messing up a lot of other things too.. Just wanted to point this out to GSM developers. I really hope you can do the same for us european users Thanks.
i think all the devs already know that, its been discussed numerous times
It's because they have a proper kernal from HTC, there isn't one availible for GSM Hero's for 2.1. that is the cause of all the problems, so until the offical update comes out, theres nothing they can do
If you have nothing relevant to say to thread, then say nothing.
@ madsborelli - Before creating a new thread, search that an existing one or similar topic hasn't been discussed before. Also, ask yourself which forum your thread would be best served in
The Roms created by Developer are already impressive. Just imageine if they were to be cobntented with the new kernel, thier development process would be much more easier and will be improved significantly. Just wait for it.
now THIS is a new dimension of censorship!
On the new cronos rom, they use the .29 kernel. Does this mean that developers now can make overclocking on 2.1 gsm roms fully working with no bugs now?
so far the "dev" of the cronos rom has yet to prove he has done anything with the kernel. the kernel that was packed with the first release of his rom was identical to the last bit with all the other leaks. some libs might have been recompiled, not sure what impact that has exactly on performance.
i amy be wrong, but is'nt this the g2 touch, htc hero forum, Not the cdma one, that has its own one here http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=641

G2/ DZ forum merge...? *scratch this*

*edit* Feel free to delete this thread admins. I found this has already been addressed in the announcment thread.
Original post:
"So I noticed that G2 and Desire Z forums have been merged due to the fact that they are practically identical other that the radio stuff... but why are a bunch of Desire HD threads popping up here? That phone isn't really too similar.. are these mistakes or has the HD forum been merged aswell?"
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Its a stupid idea to merge these, really. When people start bricking phones left and right... I'm not helping anyone. And usually, its people like me and the other senior members who have to deal with this crap and not the mods... Just because a few foolish people (with good intentions) who have no idea what's going on want this, it doesn't mean its a good idea. One major complaint was that the desire z isn't as active... well, tough ****! How is that OUR problem?! Just because our brothers on the other side of the pond are having trouble attracting development/theming isn't our problem. They need to jump in head first and do their own work if its lacking... I don't care about that really but this is just gonna create total confusion and many $500 paperweights, lol!
How is it going to create paperweights ? The main source of semi-bricking that I've seen is running Visionary, something that I try and steer people away from.
The same custom ROMs can be used on both phones.
Engineering hboot doesn't need to be applied any more, and shouldn't be in any guides aimed at newcomers.
I think you're misunderstanding the lack of difference between the two phones. You still mention a "framework" difference but I don't know what you mean unless you mean the Sense framework (which is purely a ROM issue and nothing to do with hardware).
Thanks for your kind welcoming words towards DZ owners though

Radios/hboots will still be flashed and can cause a bricked device. With frameworks... a lot of soft bricks which newbies will think its a real brick but whatever... just complicates things, that's all. Take for example, htc magic forums... complete mess because of the 32a/32b boards being in the same dev section. Brick city over there, lol! This is what we need... same subforum section with Desire z/G2/same general/same q&a/same accessories/different dev. sec/same theme. Perfect example is the htc wizard subforum, seperate board sections. Believe it or not the G2 and Desire Z have extremely similiar boards but they are different. Enough to cause problems. Wait and see... and I understand that you feel personally attacked because you were a big advocate of the merge but its nothing personal. I've been around here long enough to see a bad idea executed and the problems that arise. And no I have nothing against my desire z brothers... I had just heard someone meantion about development issues in your previous dev forum and that was their only reason for wanting a merge. That kind of pissed my off for some reason and just sounds lazy. I'm not judging everyone from the desire z subforum for that one, lone comment but it just added fuel to the fire, so to speak... I think the merge isn't bad but we need two seperate dev sections, imo. That's all...
It's ok, I don't feel personally attacked
I'd like to know what you feel is the exact difference in the boards between the two phones though ?
The only hardware difference that I'm aware of is different physical keyboard layouts (a non-issue, since that's the same issue on most phones, dealt with by software). And different radio bands set in hardware (again, the same issues on most phones, not a reason to split forums, we're not talking about GSM vs CDMA here).
How come the same custom ROMs can be used on both phones if there's such a difference ?
The guides to rooting/S-OFF now don't include instructions to flash eng hboots. And the Wiki makes it pretty clear that it's unnecessary, and lists the different ones for the two different phones if people really want to try it. I doubt many people will be looking at the Wiki when they root/S-OFF though.
We actually don't have any evidence that flashing radios from one to the other is a problem. I posted up in another thread that we really need this to be verified. I actually suspect it will work fine (e.g. the version numbering is in the same sequence across both phones).

You might be correct... I'm just going from past experiences. We can confirm with some version numbers. But I guess time will tell. I do hope things work out. Its just nice to have less headaches though... with s off things can get dangerous, complete bricks. I've bricked a few phones as a former cell tech and its never fun. I even bricked my wife's phone back in the day, lol! But... that's how things go sometimes, you live and learn. I just don't want to see new folks bricking phones with complete s off... I know its gonna happen but we don't have enough proof yet that things are completely safe as far different bootloaders go. I think we should have been 100% certain that cross flashing radios is safe.. etc before the merge. Maybe I missed something and everything has been tested before hand?
I'm not going to enter into G2 and DZ merging, I don't know well enough how similar they are. Accessories for one would definitely work with the other though, right?
The point asked about in the original post, WHY ON EARTH ARE DESIRE HD THREADS BEING MOVED OVER HERE??!?!?!
We're talking about cases, batteries, screen protectors... these are nothing like the G2 versions. Take a look -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=764
Half the threads have been moved! Why?!?!?!
Before the G2 and the Z came out I had heard on good authority that the same radio's could be flashed on either device, leaving the only real difference being the partition sizes which is infact a non-issue.
Although I know of no-one who can confirm or deny the radio point since release

Yeah, something went wrong there. But I think most of that has been sorted out now.
If you see any DHD threads that are still in the wrong place, then please PM the mods about it.
There's loads! Click the link. Half the threads are moved!
I can see 11 on page 1 alone. I'm not listing them all for a mod. This is the second time the Desire HD forum has been messed up...
Well, who wants to be the test subject and flash the other's radio? I would but I'm a broke college student and can't afford a replacement lol.

I've made a couple of posts up in the dev threads on this. Specifically, we have what appears to be a significantly newer radio version (just based on the numbers being higher numerically, not that scientific I know lol) for the DZ Egypt ROM.
Now *if* we could verify this is fine for the G2, it may benefit a lot of G2 owners to be able to try it out. DZ owners can try it too though.
I was asking in those threads if someone who's a bit of a radio expert could perhaps try it (e.g. those involved with writing gfree to unlock our radios).
DO NOT TRY THIS YET UNLESS YOU REALLY KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING
(sorry for shouting )
By the way guys, remember the G2 and DZ are both codenamed "Vision" by HTC.
So we can always start referring to "Vision" in threads if we're talking about issues which will affect both phones (i.e. not specific to stock ROMs).

Will Non-Verizon Firmware Work?

Hey everyone -
Apologies if this has been asked before, but a simple search didn't turn up results. Verizon (surprise surprise) is already lagging behind on firmware updates. For those of us who are S-Off, unlocked, and on custom ROMs, is it possible to flash an updated firmware (such as 1.80.617.1) and still use our phones? Or are we stuck on Verizon's release cycle for firmware updates?
EDIT - I meant to post this in the Questions & Answers section, my apologies. If any mods want to move it, please feel free.

we're stuck on verizon's firmware. i use viper and the software is updated to the latest release, just not using the eu/intl firmware.

If you are on Verizon you should be using Verizon firmware. Just because a version number is different doesn't mean it's ahead. They are different forks tested and tweaked for entirely different networks.

But does that hold true when flashing the Verizon radio behind the other firmware?(not challenging your statement here, just asking a variation of the OP question)
I think that is the main thing people want to know when this topic comes up. I've seen the question and information on it scattered in pieces across multiple threads, but never fully answered by being backed with a report by someone who did it.
So you don't think I am one of those that just sits back to let someone else do the work - I am willing to try such a thing by flashing the US unlocked or Europe FW followed by the VZW radio you pulled, but would need a little guidance in terms of how to provide feedback. Test signal before/after? I know from Viper thread loss of camera is something to watch out for. Any other specific items/parameters to check before/after? Since Viper just did a re-base, I have been searching and debating between those two FW anyway. First the Euro to match the ROM, then the US because they have the ROM flashing on all FW out at the moment.

So here's the thing... you will see unlocked users who simply flashed the radio complain they often get stuck on 3g/1x. You will see the posts about the camera loss. You will see things about loss of volte. The firmware is always optimized for the rom/carrier for which it was written. They won't include vzw fixes in unlocked firmware since that phone isn't targeted for use on the vzw network.
Between the rom and the firmware it's really just a different fork altogether. They aren't mean to be used without each other as a dependency.
Euro firmware will likely have some odd wifi side effects for some folks as they use different bands over there.

So can we back up just a bit to where I believe this all stems from - Is the HTC 10 truly a single-hardware phone? Therein, making all "variants" manifested only by which firmware is flashed? Is that true globally? If not, is that true for all in a particular "zone"(Europe, Asia, US, etc.)?
Ok, with the Euro FW the issues are apparent, given different standards not only for cellular, but also the camera and wi-fi vary from those here in the US. Even if one were to flash a US carrier radio, the camera and wi-fi issues could still pop up. Moving on from that consideration.
For US unlocked, there should be no standards issue, correct? Assuming hardware is the same for atleast all US carriers, what besides the radios would differ between carriers when not running stock ROMs?
Obviously there would be issues when on stock ROMs due to custom apps, features, etc. that would break not only when running different non-stock FW, but also when running one carrier's stock ROM on another carrier's network. All that is ill-advised and goes back to you only recommending stock FW.
Thanks for discussing this. I do not question your advise at all, I just want to explore the what and why of it all to put it all in one place. Thanks for humoring me and my questions!

Hardware wise most are the same. And you are right about me recommending firmware that matches your carrier. That aside, my experience has been like this....
I have been asked a couple times to try to fully convert a phone from one carrier to another. On the 10, we know that unlocked<->verizon works and we thought it would since HTC gave them the same MID (different CIDs though). On the m9, I have attempted to fully convert a verizon m9 to an ATT model. The RUU flashes everything BUT tp and one or two other ones. It boots up fine (att death star and all)... but it will never boot to recovery and never load TWRP when flashed. There's something about the overall partition structure that makes it different.
On the rom/firmware front.... Verizon and HTC do very specific testing for firmware/OS releases. They do this not only to ensure optimal performance for the user, but also to make sure that the phone itself doesn't cause issues on the network itself. As the manager of an engineering team for a huge US based ISP, I can tell you that firmware of devices CAN and DOES impact the network stability from time to time. I'm not talking about capacity issues, I'm talking about your phone making a phone call and causing a network card back at the CO/Tower/ETC reset. It does happen.
Lastly, I measure things by what you gain. What would gain by flashing unlocked or EU firmware images onto a phone on the verizon network? An increase in number version? As much as I see people who change their aboot do so to avoid red text, it always surprised me to see a VZW phone with a third X.X.401.X number on their bootloader indicating non-vzw firmware. There's a new piece of fun around since the m9 and present on the 10. If you manage to get an aboot on your phone doesnt match your firmware and you reboot the phone you will be stuck in bootloader with no access to download/recovery and often OS. The only fix is to manually flash each firmware image / partition file by name manually and it must match the aboot for it to work. So that's another reason to not go and mix and match because to be honest... most people don't make it beyond the panic moment of that. That phone gets returned and added to the reasons verizon makes it more difficult going forward.

There's my 2 cents

935F vs 935W8 roms

Hello all I've been out of the phone modding game for about 4 years and just picked up a w8 model and like the phone though sad to see no cm.
I've been browsing the site and had a few questions about modding my phone.. Several roms specifically say it supports w8 while others just say 935F.. is there really additional code to support the w8 or the rom just hasn't been verified by the developer?
Also several roms say to install the latest bootloader and modem but the link only takes you to the 935F versions.. I already have the latest update from Wind in Canada which ends in API1 is this good enough or do I need to flash a different downloaded version and if so can someone point me in the right direction for the Wind files..
One last thing.. I see a lot of people discussing flashing a csc.. but not sure what that is. I assume it's local carrier settings or something but how often is it needed? And does it only need to be done with certain roms or if there are certain issues.
I've only really used HTC and Nexus phones previously so don't wanna brick this pretty new toy as I bought it second hand and don't have warranty.
Also.. probably not the place to ask but what roms do you guys prefer that supports w8? I'm looking for something fast debloated and lots of customization.. haven't really seen the N7 so not sure about new UX.. I've usually gone cm all the way so used to default android..
Thanks for any info/advice/recommendations
I can't believe this question isn't answered. All samsung line with a pile of unecessary variations is confusing. I just picked up the phone and have no idea, while it should be same cpu=same rom
