No real correct answer, depends what you mean by good. Some prefer close to stock ROMS but with newer updates, messaging clients, tweaks, that kind of thing.
Others prefer eye candy, skinned diallers, graphics, icons etc.
Once you have HSPL on your HD2, flashing ROMS is fairly basic so the ideal is you test the ROMS out for your self. You'll find that you can be flashing a new ROM everyweek and even when you find one you like, newer updates are released all the time so it will never stop
Many of the ROMs posted here include the wifi hotspot functionality, so you may be able to 'kill' two birds with one stone (I do not condone killing birds).
Personally, I much prefer a custom ROM over the stock ROM. The other day, I flashed the official T-Mobile 2.13 ROM, just to try it out and it was a horrendous experience. I quickly flashed a new custom ROM.

Ever since i got my hands on an Android i been testing like crazy looking for that perfect rom. Not until recently cyanogens roms were a nightmare for me. Btw, i have a mytouch 3G black T-mobile USA version. I have it loaded with the RAv1.4 or is it RAv1.2, anyway the cyanogen and many other roms ( i suspect its the SPL) have a screen lit problem. after i put the phone to sleep, when it wakes up it has the big black blur. Cyanogen recently fixed it! and his roms have been awesome until the last release. No more tethering, no more apps like that one fabolous task killer app with the blue icon. Once again im sure there is good reasoning..
I dont need smart ass replies or answers to anything i read above. this thread is for others like me that just want to kno which rom is awesome for their phone. like me, they dont want to click thru every single release thread with 10,000 pages. lets get it started with one that im loving!
1) RaiderX303 Micro Hero v2.0
Everything is FAST AND SMOOTH
No "extra" apps included
Market doesnt seem to work ( i only tried to dl astrid..not dling)
SO FAST its worth it for me to use for a few days even week(s).
and i mean fast as most hero apps i uninstall in a hour.
I will update this thread as i go
NOTE: writing this was purely out of my boredom/lunch break. i do not attempt to put in an extra effort to get things right like that name of the blue app that kills my tasks(damn what is it calllledd) . im simply venting/commenting on roms i try out as im a rom fiend just like linux distros. so if your using the same phone as iam ...come back
update
Market does work just not astrid.
Found wifi tethering on market.
I'm sorry, but what's the meaning of this thread?
my own thread logging up which rom i tried and liked/ what didnt work. is this a problem? or am i suppose to go to every roms own thread to post my opinion?

Yes you should post your opinion in each thread. This has nothing to do with development. At the very least post this in general.
thanks for the right "direction"
mods is it possible to move this to general? thanks
sorry if this has been asked b4 .
i've had my hd2 for a month now and was just wondering if cooking or updating the rom is worth it .? my O.S is 5.2.21869 rom is 1.48.405.2(71294)wwe man 2.5.19211619.
what r the benifits of doin it ?
First off mate, cooking is what you do to make a custom ROM. As you said, you'd be updating it, but not cooking it.
Anyway, there are ROMs available now that have lots of fixes in that weren't included in 1.48 (the dreaded SMS issues and lock-screen not always locking, plus others.) Also, there are some ROMs available that also include Sense upgrades. For example, I've got the document tab and an eReader tab on mine. I don't use the document tab much (I've got a London underground pdf that I open with it, and that's all at the moment), but the eReader tab actually got me into eBooks.
Also, a lot of custom ROMs don't include some of the software that is on a stock ROM. For example, I use Dutty's Holy Grail v0.8, and it doesn't come with quite a few things (there's a list of stuff that's not included in the thread), and I ended up with about 70MB more device memory than with a stock ROM. As well as that, this particular ROM is simply faster and better than a stock ROM.
It's worth having a read through the ROM forum threads and seeing what's out there. You're bound to find something that you decide you want, and then you've just got the hassle of backing up contacts/texts/emails/photos/videos etc. (not that it's really a hassle when you use decent software to do it for you), and you've got to consider the fact that you're breaking your warranty too (but this can be undone, in case you ever need to send the phone off for repair/replacement).
Head on over to the ROM thread and read up on there. I bet you end up flashing a custom ROM

That's alright mate. If you're new and haven't got a clue what you're doing, just ask away. Just make sure you've searched first as some people get a bit "YOU MUST SEARCH FIRST"-like with you Just make sure to say you've searched and couldn't find anything.
I started here about a year and a half ago and didn't know a ting about WM, but lots about Windows. This has been a great site for me.
Anyway, have fun

looks good but still not for me i am afraid...
it has to be exactly right for me to even think about flashing... closest ive found that comes close to my taste is Miri's 6.5.
Dont worry about me im just extremely picky with this device. For me its fast enough as it is and has enough storage for my needs with stock. Strange because in the past i was flashing my devices nearly every other week. I guess ive just grown out of flash fever
I think I just want something that will expand the memory think I need to learn bit more bout it , till I do it .
theres no rush, the hd2 has plenty of ram even without the extra unlocked. you won't notice much of a difference.
looking for your opinions...
Does it make the HD2 Faster or not using some od these ROMS i see on here?
Post what you use, and what kind of speed increase you saw..
Thank you!
The roms on here are modified from the original and are for enhanced performance. So its up to you which you want to go with. I have used a few and Kumars seems like its the one for me. just whatever you do.. make sure its for the tmobile version and not the EU version. But yes these cooked roms offer a lot of tweeks and enhancements to the original Rom
Generally speaking, yes. No doubt about the fact that a good cooked ROM is going to be faster and have a lighter profile than the stock ROM, with all its extra garbage.
Without a cooked ROM option, I probably would not have kept my HD2, let alone bought another one for my wife.

i agree. i have noticed a big diffrence since installing this. i guess i will hve to try other ones to see which is the best for me
where can i get the tomobile stock ROm in case i need to birng it back for warrenty
Yeah the stock rom is so bad that my wife (who has nothing to do with flashing or phone modding) asked me to do hers. Now we are both running EnergyRom and she noticed the difference right away.
Kumar's is working very well for me. I would highly recommend it. I think I'll try the Energy soon. Ive heard a lot.
Rom is all personal preference and you will find the best one that fits you by flashing them all
Peace
Anyone care to explain?
Flashing a different radio can give you better battery life, wifi, signal, voice call quality and maybe some other, I think...
How would I know which one is best for me?
Make sure you know everything about flashing first then just try suitable ones for your rom. There is some feedback in the various radio's threads but you'll have to work the search to find anything useful to you.
As new radio's are available i just try them. If they're no good i go back to the last one i had.
Remember to check which radio's are suitable for which rom's, there's only a few here for an HD2 so it's not to difficult. I used to have a Kaiser and there were loads available depending on what rom sys you had.
Are you on a custom rom or HTC?
I had a hard reset an hour ago so I'm HTC atm I'm looking to customize my phone the best. Also, where can I find Manila updates?

You cant update manila. You can either flash a newer ROM with a newer Manila Version (latest is 2015 i think as p.ex. used in Duttys HG 3.8) or you install some elements of the newer ManilaBuilds like the eReader, DokumentTab etc. (available as cabs here on the forum)
Greets
Its about the user experience... Picking an interface that suits you and what you use the phone for... Taking a good phone and making it fit you perfectly...
That's the quest of rom chefs and end users and most will flash a dozen roms to find the one that suits them...
I'm sure almost everyone here will agree it's well worth flashing custom rom's, they're far better than the stock HTC roms, just takes a bit of getting into to get the most out of it. A good backup and you can always go back to a stock rom.
No pressure....
Flaaash...flaaash...flaaash!
Tim thanks you've been a great help although I want the max manila home theme. Looks smooth, I want my phone to look good as well as comfortable and speedy
Also, most ROM chefs will say which Radios work best for that ROM, and then you just need t be sure it's working well for you signa-wise in your area.
I had a non reccommended radio for Energy ROM, and I found Manilla would freeze, the phone would hang and reception would drop. One radio flash later, all this went away (and it only takes a minute and you don't lose any settings, so no biggie)

A few of the more prevalent chefs cook various versions for example the energy rom i'm using at the mo comes as a Co0kie version, a max sense version and a standard manila version. Not sure there's any max ultimate roms being cooked as maxcy now has a new interface he's working on, the said "maxsense" and hasn't updated max ultimate for a long time. Co0kies home tab is far better and far more stable, max sense is in it's early stages, probably has more potential but i understand it's got a few instabilities as it is.
Take a look at the link in my signature at the energy rom version. Not that i'm biased though i have, and will continue to try all sorts of roms. When you flash it's worth having a look at the last few pages of the rom's thread and then watch it again after you thread. Generally any probs you have will come up and any probs that don't normally mean it's something you've done different.
And also worth remebering the chefs do this for themselves and share it with us, it's fortunate they'll listen to some of our requests but really we have no right to ask for anything. We help report and sort any faults and generally the chefs will incorporate popular preferences like the energy rom doing all the variants of his rom.
I have always thought of this stuff as a bit like, why do you "chip" a car... most makers make what they think is the best within their limits for their products... they want ease and minimum hassle or comebacks... but some very bright sparks are bound to come along and make it better.. I know when I brought a diesel car, after having nice sports cars before, everyone thought I was mad.. but by chipping it, my BHP jumped 50%, my Torque 35% and my MPG went up to around 60mpg on a good run... so the benefits are there if you are willing to take the chance and change a few things..
I am using Laurentius26 GoldEdition V2.1. I have played around with previous versions from the same cook but it all comes down to finding one that works well with your apps and your needs..
I have previously used many SPB products but found that the basic shell wrecks havoc from time to time.. it can work but not in the way that I want.. so I just dropped it.. all the other stuff works but it really is trial and error..
I am by no means an expert, my constant questions on here shows that, but I do appreciate what I have learnt from here and realised almost immediately that a cooked rom was better than a standard one but you need to find one that suits you..
I had horrible internet connection problems with my stock 1.66 rom and radio combination.
Flashing to radio 2.10.50.28_2, solved those problems.
So that is why.

I do not believe that flashing a radio rom enables the 576 ram.
I am still showing 448 MB ram.

I got my wife a HD2 from tmo. She loves the hardware, of course, but the phone is stock and locks up way, way too often.
I was wondering if the custom ROMs suffer from this too or if they have alleviated this issue. I can flash her device easy, but don't want to play support desk for her.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
I think this question relates specifically to ROM development vs general dev questions, but Mods please free to move or lock if you have to.

Custom ROM's are generally very stable compared to the Stock, however, when I used my stock, it was stable as hell, it's just on a case to case basis. But sounds like on your situation, flashing a Custom ROM would help.
on my stock HD2 i found that the more txts i had the more it would lock up, and every time i would clear them the phone would run perfect, but i hate to clear my txts so i use the energy rom by NRG. cant be happier.

Same here, mine was pretty stable with the exception of the messaging problem. But man are the custom's smooth and fast! My wife's on the other hand has had numerous lockups...
Sounds like you know your way around flashing but just make sure to READ, READ, READ so you don't end up giving your wife back a paperweight.
The folks around the community have made it extremely easy to do but it's also just as easy to brick it. With the advent of HSPL3, the task29 exe file, I can go from Rom to Rom in about half an hour (after setting everything up on the new one).
As far as which ROM is best (if you find yourself asking that question); that's not a question that's really "allowed" here and usually gets a thread locked. I found that just reading the first few posts of each thread to get the jist of what they offer and then it all comes down to just flashing it, playing around with it and see if you like it.
$0.02
have you tried the updated TMobile US ROM? 2.13...? It is pretty stable. I used it for a couple months. Recently though flashed a custom ROM (Elegancia GTX) for fun, and it is actually faster, and seems even more stable.
The BEST way to make your HD2 stable...completely...is to disable HTC Sense and just use Windows Default (Titanium) or the older traditional WM Today Screen. Using HTC sense caused a need to reset my HD2 too often. Usually once a day or every two days at the longest between resets. With HTC sense disabled I might turn the phone off and on one or two times per week...and that is by choice usually.
