Does anyone else have a problem with having to wait for the Genius system to catalog contacts? When I press the button - and sometimes I have to press it 2-3 times for it to bring up the application - I then have to wait for 5-10 seconds just for the "Please wait" box to appear and for the app to process the contact list. So after 20-30 seconds I can finally speak my request.
This just seems too long of a delay for me. I could call the person via faves faster or I can activate the voice search from the search widget and have my results in this time.
If I'm the only one having problems with this I may have a defective phone and I would like to replace it before it's too late but if this is common occurance then I will just avoid using the button.
The first time I use it i get the same thing catalog contacts but then its fine the next time. I don't use it a lot so I am not sure how often it needs to catalog contacts
well about a hour later I had to wait again
Yeah, I don't use any kind of task-killer and according to Status the process is still running but it still delays every time I open it even if it's only 15 minutes later and I haven't opened anything else.
I have the same issue, it makes the genius button essentially useless, I like the concept but it's unusable for me.
The genius button was useless exactly because of this. And, yea, I thought I had a defective phone possibly as well, but its just a not so genius button. The TV commercials make it look so much faster. I prefer the google search widget with speech intents. It is soooo much faster and more efficient, especially if you change the genius button to a dedicated search button.

Hi,
The last two phones I had have both been Blackberry's.
I tried an iPhone recently (1 week) and just found myself pausing to do things that I would do on the blackberry very quickly.
It was almost like I had to completely stop what I was doing and give all my attention
and thought to navigating my way around the iphone, where as with the bb, I seem
to be able to do many tasks with one hand and dont have to think about the task
too much.
I'm wondering if I switch to a G1 how will I go on. Will I find myself waiting for the OS to catch up, continually opening the keyboard to do simple tasks etc?
I like the idea of placing shortcuts on the home screen to dial numbers etc, are there other shortcuts like this?
One task I find myself doing on the bb a lot is taking a quick photo and sending it to a single email address. (the same address every time).
Would this be possible on the G1?
I press the side camera button which opens the camera app,
take the photo by pressing the trackball,
move the trackball to the right and press once.
This gives me the sharing options, "send as email" is the top one.
Click the trackball which adds the photo as an attachment,
type my two letter alias in the To field,
scroll to the subject, type something.
Click the trackball once more and press send.
It sounds a lot when you read it but its pretty quick and simple. Any way of doing this without opening the keyboard?
Thanks
Mike
The camera after taking a pic will offer 4 options, Save/Set As/Share/Delete.
With SnapShotPro you get these options, Save/Delete/Share/Edit.
Touch Share and it will give you a list of options....Gmail/Email/MMS/Myspace/Picsay...the more apps that are able to use your camera the more options...
You only need to open the keyboard to start typing the contact and it will autofind the name for you. But you will still need to open it since there isnt a onscreen keyboard for it yet.
I love snapphoto.. but jesus it's slow to save a photo.

The biggest hindrance to super quick operations on the G1 is the lack of on screen keyboard. Without one you'll be much happier on a BB.
hopefully we will get an on screen kb soon. Perhaps with cupcake or it ported over from another phone. It would be so useful for small simple tasks like thsi

I'm being drawn to the G1, an on screen keyboard for occasional use will be very nice.
I'm not keen on the G2 as this will only have an on screen keyboard so it seems?
IMO the real problem is developers making user workflows that require using a keyboard. In many cases I feel that if an app is written properly the need for a keyboard (flip-out or onscreen) should be minimized unless you're doing heavy data entry. As the apps get better over time it's my hope this situation will improve.
While playing with my HD2 I discovered a workaround for the SMS thread loading time/tap to compose delay. This is VERY bodge-job, but also goes to prove that the HD2 is MORE than capable of loading long conversations quickly, but there's just a coding error on HTC's behalf.
Firstly, you might want to time how long it takes you to open a long thread normally. With one of my contacts I get a whopping 21 seconds.
Ok so here's the simple workaround:
Open up your SMS thread
Straight away, hit the send key/button
It should ask you if you're sure you want to send a blank message - wait half a second or so (dependant on your thread size), then press "No"
Tadaaa! Your thread should be FULLY loaded, and you can begin typing
If you don't wait half a second or so before pressing no, it seems to give a graphical glitch which keeps the SMS slider faded for a little while and doesn't allow you to tap to compose as quickly.
My guess is that by fading out the SMS thread with the confirmation dialogue, you are essentially disabling the graphical loading bar/transition of messages into the thread, and as a result, the loading time is FAR quicker.
I think it goes to prove that the problem is a GUI coding error.
Anyway, I hope this helps others until HTC get off their backsides and fix this.
Thanks.
The same can be achieved by clicking on one of the loaded messages in the thread so that a menu pops up..then cancel out of it.
Alternatively, when on the HTC Sense message tab, click ALL Messages and just open the message you want to reply to.

Thanks cool method
Its also mentioned in tip 57 in the hints and tips thread.
I am excited to use my TMOUS device except several small issues. Some of them already fixed here (thanks this forum), but some irritates me (especcially whole device is excellent). One of this is middle hard button ( I mean that "back arrow"). My opinion is its most useless key I saw. It will must better to use this as a comprehensive Task Manager or Task Switcher. But this ONE STEP BACK(!!)... Stupid! I can't find any decision in internet to correspond this button to useful function, except AEButton-software, but I don't like this so artificial way, which running on memory and fishing all button events. Anybody knows other solving?
i use the back button maybe a hundred times a day in opera. faster than calling opera out of fullscreen to hit the soft back button.
i havent heard of any other way to change it than by using aebuttons, sorry.

heh no worries. The one drawback is that if you hit a link that opens in a new tab, and then hit the back hard key, it drops you back to manila home (although opera is still running, just switch back to it) because there is no 'back' for that tab, so it assumes you mean to go back to home.
However you soon get used to it and it happens less and less.
samsamuel Thats good, but its not enough for device with only 5 hardware buttons (except volume control) to have only one programmable button for user friendly functions. I guess professionals in this forum can help us to establish full control for these buttons!

I use the back button every time I use my phone in every program. how is a back button not a good idea?
The Back arrow button functions as close app button my Euro HD2. Initially I used to think that it's just allowing me to step out of an application back to the previous screen / app that I was in, but after checking the task manager periodically, I realised that this button actually closes my apps.
Are you guys sure it's not doing the same with your T-Mo edition?
Hi there,
wondering if there is a way to get the back-button finishing the app.
When i'm at contacts or writing an sms or surfing, i want to go back to desktop as fast as possible...but when i'm at contact/details, i have to press the back button 5-6 times to go back trough all the previous screen.
Is there a way/hack/app telling the back-button (have to be a hardware button) to end the tasks completly when holding it, for example?
THX THX
Press the home button? That will take you back to the desktop.
If you need to you can then use task manager to end the task.
Would be nice to see a hack/fix to add the back button to kill functionality though

It's already in in MIUI and most probably will be also in CM7.
well the back button does kill apps.
if you start, say, the browser and press the home button, then enter task manager, the browser will still run. if you start the browser and press the back button and open the task manager, it will show that the browser is not running anymore (actually, the browser was a bad example, since after a little bit of browsing you'd have to push the back button quite a lot since its primary function is to go back). the same goes for many more apps, whatsapp, facebook, twitter, angry birds...

me too. adamG has apparently got a SGS2 though
Thinking about it, I would also like this functionality although it isn't so urgent for me. If more people show interest maybe I'll attempt it as my first android app For such a simple app my opinion is that it should be free and not packed with admob spam, but if another dev wants to attempt it that's their choice I guess.
My thoughts:
It should be quick to develop a simple app providing this functionality. Just have it bind to an event which fires when the back button is pressed long, and have it kill the app whichever is first in the foreground window Z-order (I'm fairly new to the Android API, so I use Win32 API terminology here for example only). The only complexity may be to make the event bound globally (in all apps), as opposed to only bound in the app itself - hopefully that doesn't require root! I guess it should be a background service which runs on boot, and perhaps a very simple gui app to control that service (in fact would there be anything to configure at all? What do you think?).

It would need to be in the framework of the rom, I think

Yeah it does, but you have to press and press and press...would be cool, if you can "hold down" the button for a sec and it will end the task.
Example...when i'm at handsentSMS > SMS > keyboard open...
Pressing BACK > close keyboard
Pressing BACK > closing SMS windows
Pressing BACK > closing handsentSMS
3 times pressing this button after every SMS suxx...sorry
Yeah i can press the HomeButton, but then its in my mind, that the app is running in background...isnt that bad at android-OS-structure, but its a bad feeling to me...
yes that's true. i was reading over your original post again and the first time through i must have overread the part where you named sms and the browser as examples. you are right, in that case, it does not work very well. an alternative way is to hold the home button, then press task manager and kill the app instantly. but that takes even longer. i guess your best option is to actually let it run in the background, if you want to get out of it fast.

I suspected this may be the case, really hope it isn't but I understand the Android security model needs to enforce a certain level of isolation for each app in the VM I'll do some further reading of the documentation to find out for sure, since a simple non-root APK providing this functionality for users would be very welcome.
I'm too used to other less-secure API's (Win32) in which any app could basically do whatever it wanted to other apps and the OS; I guess thats why virus authors love Windows so much
yeah just for anyone not totally in the know, there is a difference in android between pressing the BACK button and HOME button to leave an app. using the back button to leave an app and go back to the home screen basically "kills" the app. it puts it in a state where it can readily be killed by the OS in an instant.
when just pressing HOME to leave an app, the app is technically backgrounded. the OS will keep it around longer or in a different fashion.
so backing out of apps with the back button is always the way to "exit" any app.
So on my note 4 long pressing the home button opened up the Google application. Now with the v20 though it opens up an overlay. However, about half the time or more that I long press the home button, the overlay doesn't open or it immediately closes or when I try searching for something it randomly deletes everything I've typed and closes my keyboard. Does anyone else have this issue or know how to fix it?
The overlay was a change introduced in Android 6 and later called Google now on tap. As far as the issues you speak of I can't say that I have any problems with the way the app works at all. Perhaps it could be attributed to use error. Could it be you don't fully know how now in tap is supposed to work and what makes it different than the older push to open Google now shortcut on Android before Android 6?
I suggest a quick "Google" for Google now on tap so that you understand what has changed and how it exactly is supposed to work.

@EROMITLAB No, I'm fully aware of how it works and how to use it. I was also aware of why the overlay was changed. I'm not attempting to use the now on tap portion, nine times out of ten I'm only ever trying to quickly get to Google and perform a basic search and the white square will appear around the end of the screen as if it's going to open or when I go to search it will just close. Yes, definitely user error. How could I ever be so foolish as to not know how to use Google. Clearly I'm the reason the app won't load or even occasionally pops up with a force close.

No need to mock me I was honestly just trying to help. There are occasional post from folks in here who aren't as tech savvy as the majority of people in these forums. Sorry you felt disrespected or insulted.
Anyway no I don't have these issues at all with the V20. Sorry about your luck.

I have the same problem. It's definitely not just you! Although, mine never force closes and always opens the overlay search box, it ALWAYS closes out my search after typing a few characters, and then I have to start again. Frustrating.

Hey, I just tried something and it's an acceptable workaround for me. Hold down the home key until the overlay search box appears and wait a few seconds to let it calm down. Then tap the menu button at the bottom right corner of the screen and choose Settings. Now toggle off the first menu item to disable Now On Tap.
Once that's done, long-pressing the home key will launch the standard Google application, and you can start typing immediately without getting kicked out.

I get the same issue when trying to type into the Google Now on Tap. I'll begin typing then after a few seconds the keyboard will disappear along with what I typed in. I've seen one person say that it was Nova Launcher and once they switched it, the issue was gone. That did not work for me.

Dude, just do what I suggested in the post directly above yours. Turn off Now On Tap and you're all good.
