Do realize that TMobile itself though imposes a limit through their network. The best bet would be emailing them, even if you have to use wifi to do it.

Yes I do relize it as ATT has one to. But T-mobiles is bigger and the last option is the T-mobile max as to where ATT is maxed at 600k

And you realize that he was wanting to send MP3s over MMS and most MP3s exceed the TMobile limit, don't you? Thus I pointed out that increasing the size in the phone settings may still not get the OP what he wants, which is to send MP3s over MMS.
Thanks...
Thanks for all the replies, for some reason I couldn't change my sending limit to 1024k cause it was greyed out. But I soft resetted and now it's fine. I was hoping there was a way to go past the 1024k limit. But I guess not...

use regeditor, then HKLM--> Software---> Jataayu---> MMS----> Profile---> 000---> there's suppose to be a "LOCK" settings, turn it to "0" then you'll be able to change the setting to 1024k. and it won't be greyed out anymore.
or you can just install this cab and not have do the regediting

There's a registry edit that allows you to change your MMS settings. Do a search, you'll find it.
Hi,
I've been trying to send pictures but the phone shrinks and compresses them to the point of stupidity. Is there a setting I haven't discovered yet that will change this.
Cheers!

What's the use of sending full size images with a res of 2048x1536 to a phone where the display at the very best is 480x320?

So put ur memory card into ur computer, or mount it and take it off
There is obviously a reason to anything, and as someone said, it should be optional to send "as is" or sized down. But transfering big (image) files was never the design goal behind MMS. To declare MMS as "pretty much useless" if you're not allowed to send huge images (some carriers even limit MMS size to 32 kB!) is overreacting IMO. To me, it makes sense to scale down the image to std phone display size. If I want to transfer things untouched, there's always email...

Long story short... it seems that when people on here don't have an answer to the question, they like to dump in their .02.

Thank you Captain Obvious.... If I wanted to send a full size image to my friend whom then wanted to crop it to his or her liking, this does nothing.

...just like I didn't ask for your opinion. - But forgive me for adding mine - I tend to do that, when I see people getting frustrated with things just because of wrong assumptions. Like getting mad because the screw breaks when you try to get it into the hole with a hammer (or in this case why MMS isn't a good idea for file transfer).

nI diissue! I wan't o dnsend MMSs to my G/F who will crop them on her handset. She doesn't have a data plan so POP3/IMAP email isn't gonna cut
As for MMS not being designed for large amounts of data; neither were email or SMS but they evolved to meet the needs of users. Some providers send adverts via MMS so a 100I200KB jpg shouldn't be a problem.
Should it?t. 't mean for this to be a contetious

where I live, downloading an image to the phone costs the same no matter if it's part of an MMS or an email attachment. It's the same # of bytes to dl, and without a data plan every byte comes at a price.

Not to get involved in this lovely debate but the OP:
1) Wants to send a picture to his GF's phone.
2) Once on the phone she can then crop to suit.
3) Since she does not have a data plan MMS is about the only easy way to send the photo directly to the phone.
4) Depending on the phone she may or may not be able to get the picture from her computer but for the sake of argument let's assume not.
So we have a reasonable request and reasoning for why the OP wants to send an uncompressed image. Mail does not cut it and given premise 2 a compressed image is not acceptable.
So can we stop trying to find a work around for the moment and simply try and address the OP's problem? I am as guilty as anyone of justifying a limitation on my beloved G1 but in this case it is not going to help. Maybe one of the third party MMS programs? The furst question in my mind is whether it is the phone compressing the image or the carrier? Any way to know for sure?
T-Mobile (USA) imposes a 300k limit on MMS messages (as seen in many other forums here using WM). It's certainly possible that Google forced the messaging app to conform to that limit....or even to a smaller limit so that other carriers with lower thresholds could still use the same Android build for MMS.
I always send MMS to my wife who is overseas, and I prefer MMS since its instant and my wife doesn't check her email frequently. I know I can email her the images then sms her to notify her about the email but thats just not practical.
so please if you don't have an answer, you don't have to say "I don't know" which might hurt your reputation as an expert on everything except useful solutions.
Just skip the thread.
I'm interested as to whether there are any .conf file etcetera to edit.
It seems to be the phone requiring the compression of the image, which doesn't make much sense, as none of my WM devices have forced this requirement upon me.
Anyone care to join me in a game of 'Hunt the config file'
The images I send are literally the size of my thumbnail btw.
Thanks in advance!
Dave
Why not just email the full sized picture to her phone's email address. Most providers have an email address for each phone number on their system. T-mob is [email protected]. Search google for the address. There, a nice simple solution. Was I really the only one that thought of this?
Well the G1 MMS is capped at about 298kb or 300kb and pictures taken on the G1 in max resolution are easily over that but no worry looks like we'll get a 3MB cap with 1.5 or just send to email
I sent a picture message many times to my friend and she never received it. I tried it on hanscent, chompsms, and the original messaging app and she hasnt received it. I'm on tmobile by the way. Is there a problem going on right now with the mms department?
I'm having an issue receiving MMS on my N1 on Vodafone in Ireland. I won't receive them at all even thought I have entered all the correct settings!!

yes it is rooted to cyanogens 5.0.4.1 i flashed it about 3 times.
i had to change certain settings to be able to send mms to iphones....
I've had issues sending mms on my unrooted n1.
I think it has something to do with the photo size (despite being compressed for mms) if i send a regular picture (always on highest resolution) the report stays on pending until failure. however if i use something like ezimba and reduce the file by say 30% it's received almost immediately...
not sure if this is the cause or not, but that's the work around i've found to get it to work...

what settings? i'm having trouble sending pictures to iphones (3gs) too.
Picture size must be under 300k (this includes the text message).
There is a setting under handcent that lets you specify the maximum size. By default it is 500k.
Change that setting and it may work better for you.
Android 2.1 currently has an issue with image compression for MMS. The default sms/mms client in Android does compress images, but it doesnt compress enough. It compresses all images so that it has a maximum image size of 2592x1944. However, for many carriers, the file size limit is around 300kb which will make you unable to send the MMS.
Luckily, there is a quick and easy way to manually edit the max sending size value..
I posted a quick guide here
Cyanogen is solving this issue in the next version of his Android ROM, but for everyone who wants a fix now or dont use Cyanogen, this guide should solve your issues
This would require root, right?
Yes it will I think, as you need root in order to push the mms.apk back in as far as i know
I wonder if T-Mobile USA has that limitation.
Does anybody know, if some carriers have a recieving MMS size limitation ?
I dont think Ive heard of a MMS receiving size limit anywhere, so dont think there is one..
How is this done in a Sense Rom? My Evo port for the HD2 doesn't have a "mms_config.xml" file..
Thanks
my n1 camera is set to take photos in 1600x1200 only (2mp?). I find that any higher is pointless because you are limitedby the low quality sensor/optics... so you are just wasting resources by using 5mp. also, a higher mp setting usually adds more noise.
Dont handcent and chomp resize automatically ?
Also let you choose max size.
You can set the max size limit on Handcent.
Settings > Send message settings > Maximum MMS size
I have noticed that people on AT&T can only receive mms at 500k or less (I'm sending pics from Tmobile).
WOW!
Thanks....Been wondering about this.
Every single U.S. carrier does transcoding on the MMSC level. Sending a larger quality file is not going to impact the picture that you receive on the other handset after the MMSC transcodes it past a certain point.

And to the one who asked how to do it in Sense, I have no idea, as HTC's messaging app differs from the stock one.

T-Mobile i think went up to 1MB max size but AT&T uses 600KB. Most other carriers are only 300KB (maybe 350KB) still however however.
I generally lower the resolution of my photos too for exactly that reason. No point in sending "5mp" images for people to view on a ".3 - .8mp" screen. I figured 2-3mp is good enough to save to email later on or view on the PC as well as send via MMS.
Everytime I push the mms.apk back to my phone my messaging apps just fc's and won't oppen. Any suggestions?
Since installing whatsapp, stopped using sms and mms, other than replying incomings, no worries on mms size limitations anymore...

hi everyone
I am wanting to know is the size limitations of mms a function of phone, the os, or sprint?
I currently have not had any problems sending pics (this is prob because handcent will resize them for me before I send) but I have yet to be able to send a video via txt yet. One the few occasions I have tried I get an error saying something about the max size reached. In the default message program I have max size set to it's default which is 1mb which happens to b the max it can be set at. In handcent the max size is set to 1.2mb which is it's max value.
Any ideas as to what the limitation is?
Unfortunately, it is a Sprint network limitation. No fix, no workaround.

that is a major bummer :-(
this is what i was suspecting but thought maybe it was os limited like the rate limiting of sms by android.
thanks for the info.
does anyone know if the evo or sprint 4g network has this same limitation?

I do remember looking at that and in the /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db there was a setting
under "gservices" called mms_maximum_size or something like that.
You could try a sqlite edit amd change the value to "0", if there was a limitation caused by that database the edit would remove it.
try it and see if it helps :-/
Edit: You can see the line I was talking about (line 5) in the attached picture.

I don't know necessarily that it is a "Sprint" limit either. Possibly a CDMA MMS limit. But it's just like email's there are size limitations there as well - just depends how big yours is. I can send 20MB internally at 15 externally, but chances are my customer is capped at 10mb.
The intertubes are a weird place.
Just going my what was stated on Sprints forums some time back. Sprint employee SarahKS stated that Sprints mms were sent and processed though a third party partner whos servers were capped at 1mb per message. Even if code could be tweaked in the Heros rom to send more mb per mms, that mms would never reach its recipient because of the external limitation.
