I used 15+gb of data this month. Does over 15gb is normal? I didn't even use wireless tether.
What you average data usage?
edited: i am an idiot....i misread the number. i actually used 1.4GB of data.
Ive used 2GB so far this billing cycle and it ends 7/12 ... and that is with pretty heavy use and even some wireless tether
i've used about 600KB but my billing cycle is over on the 22nd. If I keep up my current usage I'll be at about 1.4-1.5 GB.
I do use my wireless A LOT more than my 3g though. It's so much faster and I'm impatient.
i've used about 1.33 gigs so far. my billing cycle ends on the 18th
2 gig here. The 'my verizon' app is great for checking this.
I'm at 4.8GB cycle ends the 8th...
Im at 3.5 gig and my cycle ends the 13th

just out of curiosity, what do you primarily do on your phone to use data? i stream a lot of pandora and surf the web some but i think the main program that uses data is pandora.
3g watchdog says I've used 13.5 mb. I'm on wifi most of the time. Then again I've gone cheap on the service side of things using page plus, so I don't have a lot of cheap data available.
I usually hit 3gb, but I don't know what the hell I'm doing that's using so much.

Can you get away with using some tether without getting a tether plan?
Yes that is what most of my 3.5 gig of data is.

While using a ROM that would continually download OTA updates I ended up using 9gb before realizing the issue. That was on my HTC Vogue but it can happen with any ROM. Glad you just misread you usage

I just went over 4gb and i use mine to work on the train when i commute to and from work.

How much bandwidth does it take? Using on the Xoom and having the 3G w/ 3GB plan, I am a bit hesitant on it.
That in itself is $35.00 on top of having the Samsung Galaxy S w/ unlimited data for $30.00 and having a line for my wife with $30.00. It sort of add up ahahah
damn verizon. Got no loyalty to long time customer. They killed VIP benefit, nerf the NE2 and going to kill NE2 soon...blah.
On a different note....
Anyone know if and when Xoom upgrade to LTE, would it be usable once AT&T/Tmobile goes LTE?
i don't know about slingbox but if your galaxy is unlimted why not root it and tether it to your xoom I have a wifi only and I use wireless tethers bluetooth pan to get online on mine
No 4G on Galaxy , but isn't bluetooth Tether slow?
The data usage would depend in ur picture quality settings. Streaming will most definately eat up ur data plan. You should tether your galaxy anyways. Unlimited 3g is better than 3GB of 3g

Agreed, I've already ripped through about 3/4 of my 1GB allotment for the month, by letting a friend at work watch the baseball game yesterday.
My wife received a 'buzzer' type of email from VZW stating I had crossed the 1/2 way point for my data usage this month.....
Wifi is realy the only way to stream for long periods of time.
Cheers,
Hatxtrick
I have a slingbox and it will push to what ever your weakest link is. If your upload is 512k then there you have it. Mine is 2mb upload so it will use all of it as long as I have at least 2mb download. Yes that will eat your data alive. I only run the sling over WiFi. Works great though.
i have a slingboxhd myself. wifi streaming rocks. 3g is nice too but the quality is only as good as your data speeds as it adjusts the quality with your bandwidth.
I have a slingbox that I access with my Evo and Xoom. I average 5gb on Wimax every month. Luckily its covered on Sprint. You will definetely need the unlimited plan

Even with the unlimited plans, T-mobile requires the tethering feature to be added. As was stated before, it's free until they catch it.
Tethering is extra on top of unlimited data.
Change your user agent on your computer to android, ie mobile, or iphone, etc etc and you are good to go.
I have not been caught yet. I did receive a txt before I changed user agent though.

Wireless tethering is included with the [MyTouch 4G] phone, per 2 T-Mobile reps, one who checked in to it after I told her what I had heard from the first. I asked her to annotate my record (case, ticket) Just In Case. 2 different reps said that tethering was not included, and was an extra cost. I didn't press them as I was calling about something unrelated.
I have tethered without charge and without problems before and after rooting/installing CM7. I don't tether much, but never hesitate when it is handy. My total usage is well under 5GB/month, FWIW.

They are right, but it's just like GM cars come included with ONstar but it'll cost you. There is no switch or button they can push to allow the tethering to continue after the message comes up unless you have the feature added. You can ask for supervisor, supervisor's supervisor, etc. but it's an automatic system programming. Before last December there was no tethering feature but it was also against the terms & conditions of T-mobile to tether and still is in there but now they have the feature.
Some people have found changing the user agent ID as a solution, don't know but using it regularly can definitely lead to the message and there's no options after that but to quit tethering or purchase the feature.
I've been tethering for the past 2 weeks now because I just moved into a new place and haven't been able to switch my internet over just yet. I haven't seen any changes in my bill, nor recieved any text messages from T-Mobile regarding tethering charges. I'm using CM7 and no other tethering apps. I haven't changed any user agents except on my phone's browser, and I changed it from Android to desktop. So far I've used 33,152.81 Mb (a lot of netflix streaming) according to the T-Mobile website. Although I've been throttled, it's not too bad because I'm in a 4G area and still getting around 2 Mbps.

if you are seeing 2Mb download speed you are not throttled. Throttled speeds are around 56k, or about the same as EDGE.

Yup. I pretty sure it's because I'm using CM7 and not the official stock app. Either way, this is just my temporary setup. Once I get my internet up and running I won't be tethering too much. It's nice to know that I can though.
when i get throttled my speeds drop so slow, noticably slower in web browsing
lucky you, it'd be nice to have 2mb download still
Tethering has been enabled on my phone since I got it, without it even being rooted it has the wifi hotspot option, and I don't remember there being an extra charge on my bill for it...and yes it works fine.
I don't know where some folks are getting there info. T-mobile does not charge for tethering. I tether every day on my Mytouch 4g and never been charged for tethering. Ive been doing this since Jan.

Hey everyone, I just bought my EVO 4g and the main reason I bought it was because of sprints unlimited data. However, after I bought it, sprint lady tells me they charge extra for tethering. If I run cm7 and use the tethering app, will they catch me?
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
I have never heard of anyone being penalized by Sprint for tethering with a rooted phone before but that does not mean it has not happened. I do use tethering once in a while when I am away from home and need data to my laptop. If you are not going crazy (don't run bittorrent on a tethered phone) then you are probably ok. You do have "unlimited" data (what ever that means) but if you start using more than 10GB a month you may attract attention.

You have unlimited web surfing, email, and pictures. Running up excessive amounts of data by downloading or uploading movies, hosting video games, non-stop usage of a video camera, as well as tethering are all violations of your contract.
Sprint cares more about excessive data usage (whether you are paying for tethering or not) than who is tethering without paying for it, because too much data running through the system affects service. Tethering is just running data to your computer from your phone. They charge the $30 because if they did not, more people would use their phones as their primary internet and run up enormous amounts of data (I DON'T THINK SPRINT AGREES WITH THE 235GB CAP PER MONTH THAT COMCAST ALLOWS). The people who have been flagged by Sprint were all using large amounts of data, and quite a few were actually paying for tethering.
I tether exclusively...i download torrents, music, and everything...been doing it since June 4th 2010...no problems! Tether on friend!
I never paid the $30/month and I tether 15-20GB every month. Never had any problems with Sprint.
I also have an employee discount and only have to pay $60/month. Not bad.
I'm a light tetherer but a heavy data user. I use 6-10gb monthly and I have since I started my sprint contract 4 months ago. Just keep down your roaming as sprint allows only 300mb of off network roaming.
sent from my 7/23 iNfEcTeD EVO 4G
It's just important to be responsible about it.
There's nothing wrong with tethering once in a while when it's necessary, there is something wrong with using it as your home internet connection and not paying the extra fee.
It's important to understand that when you abuse the system you're not just hurting us, you're hurting yourself. Why? Because you encourage Sprint to go the route of others. And if they do that, you won't have the option.
Ive EASILY tethered on 4G 100+GB since May. Ofcourse, 4G is ABSOLUTELY unlimited no matter what. I dont think they monitor 4G as much as 3G, since the 4G comes from Clear, really. I dont tether 3G much at all. But yea, tether away....just dont do anything illegal.

Sprint store employees try to sell sprint's $30 a month hotspot and will tell you that is the only way to tether. I do not have this service, and I tether like a madman and have never been charged. I have tethered as well and had no issues. Mainly use it only when I need to if there isn't any wifi options when I am not at home or work.
I use a program called PDANet.
Search Android Market, Free App
If you are by 4g when you tether then knock yourself out. They don't monitor 4g at all so u can do whatever. But if you use 3g they track the amount of data but its still unlimited. Just like everyone else said. Don't go crazy with the 3g and you will be in the clear.
P.s. I tethered while out of town for a month in a very good 4g area. Easily used 40+ gigabytes of data during that month (torrents and whatnot) and nothing. No message, no extra charge. Zilch. So if your in 4g ur in the clear as far as I'm concerned.

They need to let you know they are changing your plan before they do so. I have been tethering with my phone for years now and ATT has never said anything to and I think it has to do with the amount of traffic. If they see a huge spike of activity and then they look at where that traffic is coming from and they see that you are connecting to battle net then they will know something is up(i know the traffic is not coming from battle net). What I am trying to say is do it within reason, as my guess is the people that they are catching are using well over 2GB a month.
I hope a mod moves this soon... But I heard of at least one person getting nailed with usage <1GB.
i used to tether my blackberry to my ipod touch forever and att has never said anything, i used to use it on my netbook when i went to school too. this was bluetoothtethering. but im think it has more to do with what a user is doing/amount of traffic they are using etc. as for the <gb guy, that may have been a random check or something else. but tethering to play online gaming you will surely get naildd... so use at your own risk knowing the consequences if they/when they find out
I've been tethering for years. I regularly go over 5gb's and at&t has never said anything. I am grandfathered in on the unlimited tho, and I normally only use it for tethering my tablet which is Android so it probably looks as tho it's just coming from my phone. Oh and occasional tethering to my Xbox when my DSL drops out. Lol.

I believe it has to do with the internet stack in the phone. Seen an article a while back on this. If you use a cooked rom they will know if it is based on the stock kernal and rom. If you use something like cyanogenmod they shouldn't ever find out. I think I seen this explanation with verizon tethering and how to get around it.

but that wouldnt explain how i could tether with my blackberry to computers and ipods with no ATT wrath, and i know these are android phones but tethering is tethering..right?
How AT&T can find out?
About four months ago I received a txt from AT&T thanking me for enjoying my trial period of tethering for my iPhone and that a tethering package would automatically be on my next bill. The forum I was on (don't remember where) simply stated that all I had to do was go into an AT&T store and demand that I NOT be placed on the tethering plan. I did that and after a quick phone call from the store to a CSR they pulled it off but with a warning. They said that if tethering activity was monitored again that they would add it back and I couldn't remove it (yeah right).
I was using the MyWi app from Cydia that works perfectly. I used it for nearly two years with no issue. However, the PDANet Cydia app has a "Hide Tethering" option in the program that always made me curious. What is it hiding? MyWi doesn't have that option.
I also used a Windows Mobile phone prior to that with ICS installed and regularly tethered to that as well. I think that ROM was a NotaTreoFan ROM most of the time and then Energy.
I would love the option of adding tethering to my SGS2 but I refuse to pay for a tethering plan. I'm still grandfathered into unlimited data.
Thoughts?

They shouldn't notice anything. I have used barnacle tether on T-Mobile and sprint. So both sim and cdma for a while now. And so far nothing. I'm pretty sure barnacle tether just uses your mobile network and shows up as nothing more than data usage. Bc when using the built in carrier tethering they see the app in use and send that data back. I check my tether stats and network stats and it just shows up as network use. I think you will be fine

With the Vibrant I was using a Team Whiskey rom not the stock rom. Do you think it could be the stock rom or just tmobile being more smart about detecting this now.

I have been using Open Garden WIFI Tether for almost a week without any problems. I just leave it open while driving. My son access it with his IPod Touch and my daughter with rooted NOOK Tablet. So far so good.
Tmo rep here. The tethering plan has always been $15 but Tmo has never really enforced it. They have recently started preventing tethering from working on devices but it is still pretty hit or miss. On my coworker's stock Amaze she is getting blocked even on the employee data plan but on my GS2 I have never been restricted but I've always been rooted.
Starting on the 25th of this month, they will be adding free tethering to 5GB data plans so if you do a a 5 gig plan, just have Tmo update the data feature and you should have no problem tethering. If you are just on a 2GB plan, you should be fine if you are rooted.

Just called in (had to call in and ask for cancellations to even speak to anyone) the idiot I spoke to never heard of this promotion. Never had a tethering problem until yesterday when I tried it after reading this thread. I never had a problem with my N1 or Sensation. I really hate having to talk to people at Tmo. 90% of the time they are so stupid I'm ready to cancel my contract. I guess I will root and axe the wifi mgmt app and see if it works. If I have to call those idiots again I may be moving to Sprint.

it looks like you have to be upgrading to 5gb or 10gb to get this. The person I spoke to today said they always charge for tethering. Just like the dozen people I spoke with 6 months ago told me they always charge for wifi calling and there was no $20 5gb preferred plan. Not sure if dealing with these people is worth the money saved. smh
i juts called to ask about a thing on my bill and they offered me the upgrade to the 5gb for an extra 10 dollars per month, i dont really tether and im always either at my home wifi or my work's wifi, but im reeeally starting to think about sprint here, the problem is i travel overseas and i need a gsm phone.
if not ill switch to simple mobile, a friend has it and he has had no problems so far with it with international calling and 4g for 60 bucks i can be happy with that price, i would have to ask about the quality of the service though and get the unlock code for my phone first.
