(I'll preface this by saying that I am well aware there have been a million threads about this, I'm sure, and I'm even more sure that there will be a million more. And I have searched, and searched, and searched some more, and I still feel the need to post this question. Flame me if you want. I'll use the flames to heat up some tea, or something.)
I bought my phone last Thursday, it got lit with service Friday. I went over the weekend and into Sunday with stock ROM/kernel, and decided to mix things up by rooting my phone and using the MixUp kernel to see if I could get better battery life.. and it didn't work too well. I mean, life went up a bit, but not noticeably so (maybe twenty or thirty minutes?)
After that, I flashed Syndicate, which had Xtreme Kernel. I calibrated the battery as instructed inside of Clockwork and went with it for Tuesday.. took it off the charger at 8:00 and it died around 4:00. Kept the same kernel and flashed Epic Experience and the attached JuicePlotter shot is where I am at right now.
My usage today has been light browsing and that's basically it. I've got the processor underclocked to 600 with SetCPU, and JuiceDefender and Superpower have been preventing any data from going on when my screen is off, and for the last two hours I've been listening to MP3s using the in-built music player.
This makes me cry considering there are people on here saying they're able to get much more life out of their battery, even with BT and WiFi etc. I'm aware that each phone is different and all that, but still.
All that said, is there a problem with my phone/battery, is this par for the course with the Epic, or should I just stop whining?
Thanks in advance for any help/insight.
A couple of things...get a task killer app so that you can kill the drm process which eats up a ton of battery, calibraing your battery takes 2 or 3 times going from full charge to zero and also, since its a new phone it takes charging to full and letting it get down to complete zero a few times before you will see better battery life no matter what else you do
Edit: oh and also definitely do the airplane mode toggle as well

Also, for each new Kernel you flash, you have to calibrate the battery.
Charge it to full, boot off, boot up in Clockwork, go to Advanced and Clear Battery stats. Reboot the phone, use it until it runs dead and shuts off, than plug it back in and charge it to full with the phone on.
Every time you flash a new kernel, you have to do that process so the battery calibrates to that certain kernel.
Also, try Baked Snack, it gets the best battery life for 2.1 ROMs.
http://www.bakedsnackshack.com/source/
Download Bakedsnack1.6 and Step 2.
Make a backup.
Wipe data/cache
Install 1.6
Boot the phone up
Reboot into clockwork
Install Step 2
Boot the phone up.
I have to have a car charger if I go anywhere. This phone dies so fast with normal usage. Do anything crazy like turn features on, surf the web, or increase brightness, and I am lucky to get 2 hours. I have multiple batteries, both have the same result.

2 Hours..? Whaaaaa? Lol.
When I calibrate my battery, I turn EVERYTHING on, screen brightness all the way up, Pandora running, every widget I can fit on my screens set to update at their quickest setting, screen set to 30min (Though I never let it shut off). Bluetooth, GPS, 4G running (I don't have 4G here, so it just keeps searching, which drains it more than if it was connected). And running the Maps Live wall paper to use GPS.
When I do all that, I can't get it to even die under 4 hours.
Hopefully you were exaggerating with saying 2 hours lol.
Thank you guys for replying!
Sh0wNuF: I killed the DRM service today and used ATK to kill errant processes throughout the day today to no avail. I also used the airplane mode toggle to try to limit my time without a signal.
SemiGamer: Thank you! I did do the clockwork step as I said in my first post, but I will try to install BakedSnack and get back to you guys as to the battery life.
From the looks of that juiceplotter graph, your data is constantly on and destroying your battery. What is the point of having juicedefender if the data is constantly on?
If you set up the phone properly, and there are a MILLION threads on this which state a MILLION times to disable DRM and toggle airplane mode as a mere baseline beginning, you should lose at most 1% an hour when the phone is idle without a data connection and the screen off.
Now it looks like you probably have the data on constantly with emails rolling in, facebook auto updating every 5 minutes, weather checking every half hour and other things that are just destroying your battery life. If you need your phone to do all that nonsense, then you will be crying for the rest of the time you have it.

Thank you for your reply, but as I said in my first post, I was using both JuiceDefender and Superpower to make sure data was off in the background, and as I said in my most recent post, I did disable the OmaDrm service as well as enable/disable Airplane Mode to lower my TWS.

Thats fine, but your data aint off. Look at that graph you posted. Every little blip is either data being accessed or the screen turning on. The line should be smooth if there is no data and no screen on.
So there are two options, either you are constantly using the phone and its the screen killing the battery, or you have juicedefender set up all wrong and its the data killing the battery.
If I remember correctly, any spike below the line is data, either wifi or 3g and any spike above the line is the screen turned on. So from the looks of it your data is literally never turning off and you are checking the phone and turning the screen on and off pretty frequently.
What are your settings in juicedefender?

I have almost identical batter results as you. I do use the phone fairly often to send messages but the screen brightness is all the way down and I use set cpu on the froyo beta leak. I reset battery stats and also (perhaps you could look into this too) checked spare parts for any rogue programs. Does yours say the screen takes up most of your battery even if you barely use it?

I would up the Schedule to less often and turn off the traffic toggle. Also, I wouldn't doubt that your phone is never going to sleep. If you have spare parts check the Battery History. If you listen to music with the phone, the service started by the music player, CorePlayerService, keeps the phone awake constantly for me. I ended up making a simple kill music widget using tasker to fix this issue.
I bought a wildly overpriced Samsung stand/battery charger from Amazon. My wife & I each start the day with a charged Epic and a spare battery. No worries

Not the biggest fan of the aesthetics of the ROM.. but I'll live.

When you say much better battery life exactly how much? My battery dropped 20% today while not being used and Display was still at 60% (I turned the alarm off twice). I'm running the Quantum ROM which could have something to do with it but the battery is horrible for me. I can't get more than 8 hours and that's if i barely use it. I have spare parts and no apps are partially waking it. Just Wifi and sync. No GPS, brightness all the way down. The main thing that bothers me is that display is always #1 even if i don't use the phone at all. Any thoughts?
I've ran both Quantum and Viper Froyo roms and aside from making my phone hot enough to fry eggs, the battery life was not good.
As far as battery life goes, I'll start with the obvious stuff.
1. Turn off GPS, Bluetooth and 4G. 4G is a complete power whore.
2. As for wifi, turn it off unless you are in a bad coverage area for cell data. If you are connect to wifi and set Spare Parts to never let wifi sleep.
3. For DRM there are 3 files you need to remove that will prevent it from running / reinstalling and they are DrmProvider.apk, DrmUA.apk, and SisoDrmProvider.apk.
4. Toggle airplane mode every single time you reboot without fail.
For a true test of whether your phone simply needs to be returned as "defective" you should wipe the device, dont setup a google account and let it run for a day after executing steps 1-4 above. It would be best to an apk for Spare Parts and SDX Stock App Remover on your microSD that could be installed using My Files. If you still have problems take the phone back to sprint (after restoring it to factory of course) and tell them it is defective.

Here's a JuicePlotter graph from today for comparison from my original one yesterday.
I still wonder if it wasn't going to sleep because of PowerAMP and I didn't underclock today like I did yesterday.
There are a few other physical issues with my phone (slider seems a bit loose compared to my other phones: if I swipe with slider closed with a bit more pressure than usual, I can feel the screen move up and down; screen seems to slightly come up a bit when phone's tilted a bit, taps make you feel the screen go back down) that also made me want to consider exchanging it on top of the battery issue but if I'm getting good battery life I don't think I'll mess with what works, unless anything gets worse.
It's finally driven me to the point that I'm just going to sell the Nexus for a profit and get a G2. I can't take picking up my phone every single time I want to check if I have a message. I've never had a smartphone without this feature, and it's just a nightmare.

I do miss having an LED indicator too... but I wonder if they took it out due to battery life reasons. Is there an app that can help give better indications in case for missed calls or texts that can do a reminder without an LED indicator... maybe even use the LED light on the back of the camera is better than nothing
i would say just wait until someone makes it so it uses the LEDs under the softkeys as notification lights

I don't want to power-on the screen for a notification that may be left un-noticed for an hour.
I didn't really like the idea of NoLED either but I just decided to try it for the hell of it. I use the blink mode and set the time out to 1 hour so if it's idle for an hour the notifications will stop. I've checked the battery drain and it seems to be quite small with blink mode at least (since I'm only having it display the notifications for 1 second every 30 seconds). So really, 2 seconds of screen time every minute, which is about 120 seconds every hour, or about 2 minutes of screen time where it's mostly black and a few lit pixels, and then after that 1 hour it stops.

I tried noled but must confess I never spent any time setting it up so the battery drain I noticed may have been avoidable.
Just to pick up on the above... I'd want the notifications instantly obvious so that a quick glance at my phone would notify me of any messages. Using the above method I'd only see a notification for some of the time and not all.
Lighting up the bottom buttons would be a much better option for me but in the meantime I might try noled again.

to be honest id be more paranoid about burn in , cuz really if i get a text when im sleeping and it goes unnoticed for 8 hours then what
With NoLED you can set notification timeouts, I have mine set to 30 minutes because I always have my phone near me and 30 minutes is plenty. I also have it set to use the Proximity sensor so that if the phone is in my pocket it's not displaying any notification, only when you remove the phone from your pocket and the proximity sensor detects that it's clear will it display the notification instantly. You can also set a "sleep" time for notifications, so I have mine turn off at 2am and turn back on at 6am.
If there is any increased battery drain I haven't noticed it, but then again I don't leave notifications on flashing for hours either.

The notifications move around the screen to prevent any pixel burn-in. You can set them to timeout after a certain amount of time also.
Have you guys even bothered trying out NoLED? Haha
Good to know but on top of that don't the notifications move around the screen?
Edit: ikon beat me to it.

NO!, i fear change!
Have the phone make a sound/vibrate. No need to pick it up.
or download noLED. Problem solved.
I've made a couple posts in the Poor Battery Life on NS? thread( such as http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10143276&postcount=159) detailing my experience with the Nexus S's battery.
I use noLED as my notification system with large icons rather than the default little dots and no time out method. The only other special thing I've done to it is turn on the proximity sensor so noLED doesn't run while it's in my pocket. My boss likes to do a lot of paperwork in the super late evening/early morning and sends me emails accordingly(this is why I don't leave the sound/vibrate on, lol). noLED's impact on battery life is extremely negligible. I would put it on par with the power with the power consumption of an actual LED notification light due to the way SAMOLED and blacks work.
And, if you're worried about burn in, like someone said, the icons shift around the screen in order to avoid that.

Just tried noled again and am noticing a few force close errors.
What settings are best for this app and when a notification is received, what are you using to wake tje phone again as the power button causes issues as explained in the splash screen after install?
I'm also seeing all the bottom buttons light up as well as the notification on the screen, is this normal and if so is this not consuming battery unnecesarily?
Seems a tad buggy to me this app on the Nexus S. Would appreciate exact settings / configuration from anyone that has it running satisfactorily.
Ok I was trying to search abouth this but haven't found abouth it here.
When my battery is under 10%, you can't select display brightness anymore in the display option menu. I don't use energiesaving. Is this normal that samsung manages the brigntness itself than? It's annoying because I want to use my 10% battery on full brightness if I want too!!
I can adjust it with the widget, however when I open my browser it sets back to samsung dimming it... so not possible than.
Also you can not use camera at lower battery of 20 or 15%, not sure wich one, just noticed it today; I think 15%. Why the f*ck is that? Again: Why can't I choose what to do with my last 15%?
As far as I was searching I didn't find an option to turn this off. Anybody else maybe?
Thanks for answering these two questions!!
Oh and a little question: The battery usage graph, when is it reset and does it start counting again? Only when you put the plug in untill it is 100%?
this has been the default behavior even with SGS1. You can't snap pictures, listen to music, view videos, raise brightness when your battery is low.
I think there is no way to alter this behavior.
To your other question - the batt stats in that little app will reset when you charge to full 100% and it gives you that message "batt is charged, disconnect the charger".

Ok thank you!
I find this pretty annoying. Verry friendly of samsung to think abouth my battery not spending on media things, and i could make important calls if I need to! But I am old enough to spend my battery on what I find important, pff.
Oh well, maybe rooting in the future(or wouldn't that effect it?)... Don't know much aboutch that yet, first android. But will look into it.
Most likely you would need to patch the code to fix this. Someone will do it eventually. It hasn't bothered me enough for me to want to patch it. But I agree, it's stupid. If I want to take pictures when the battery is at 15% or lower, I should be able to do that. If I want to watch a movie when the battery is less than 10%, I should be able to do that.
Interesting. What if Samsung didn't implement this features and when your last 10-15% of your battery is dying fast with all your setting and you couldn't make any important calls or email or message will you be complaining to Samsung for not implementing any battery saving features?
With 10-15% of my battery left I will save as much battery as I can to save for any important things before I reach home.
People's need is hard to pleased. One wanted this another one doesn't want that. Never ending story. Haha.
Wait for custom rom to remove this features. =D

Thinks its a security feature too protect your battery and your fone.
Lithium batteries are very sensitive when they are almost drained. Normaly your fone will shutdown when the batteri voltage reach about 2,5V, if the voltage go lower on a lithium batteri, it will not accept a new charge and can explode if force charged.
Another thing is that lithium batteries have higher impedance the lower the voltage is on the batteri and its not after af liniear scale. Lets say the voltage on the battery is about 3V when the fone is reporting 10% left. The problem is that the impedance is very high at that voltage, so if you drain to much power, the voltage on the battery will drop under the safe voltage limit immediately, render your battery useless, and possibility to harm your fone and you if force charged.

no nobody would be complaining because not a single other android phone does this behavior, and people seem just fine not yelling about anything.
i agree this behavior should have an on/off setting. someone will fix it wiht custom ROM let's hope.
Yeah and not to be able to use camera when battery is lower than 20% is ridicilous! There is still 20% juice left. Camoon Samsung!!
I could somehow understand if it starts when under 10% left but I still prefer that I can personally decide whether or not save battery when running out.
For Desire I always had extra battery with me. I could use it 100% until the battery died and just change to next one.
Now basically the already bad battery life has been taken 20% away cause you cant do **** after that.

turn it over, alarm clock work by making sound, it will be louder if it is facing down because the speaker is on the back, problem solved.
I realize that I could do that as a last resort, but I could see myself stumbling trying to pick the thing up to shut it off and in my morning sleepiness accidentally dropping it.
Hi -- quick question for you (I haven't bought the phone yet) -- since you didn't mention a noise, I take it that the GSIII does not also make an audible alert when the battery's full (which can only be silenced by putting the phone on Silent)? My Vibrant does this, and it has always bugged me...
How about when you charge the phone when it's off -- does it vibrate and light up with a "battery full" alert? (That vibration alone can sometimes be enough to wake me up.) Thanks!

Wait, do you actually get woken up by the light coming on on your screen?
Yeah,it doesn't take much to wake me. I'm diabetic, and it's tough to keep my sugar in check overnight. I'm constantly up and down either checking where I'm at, or I'm low and have to drink something to boost my sugars, or I'm high and have to take another shot to drop it down. Then when I'm high I have to piss a lot. In between I'm trying to get all the sleep I can....I don't need another thing waking me up.

sorry to hear that bro......
I don't know why my wifi was malfuntioning. Last night i've installed Real Racing 3 after that, the game need to download the data which is 1Gb+. Downloading that size is way too long to wait so i've decided to sleep. Before i go to sleep, I've put the charger because my battery was only 20% and i know downloading that size could empty my battery i dont want that to happen. I turn my backlight in the lowest settings because the downloading screen on the game was not turning the light off and the last was i've activated the power saving mode.
Today, when i woke up, a glimpse on my S4 to check if my download was done, there's pop-up saying connection error, and the download was on 81%, i quickly pick-up the phone to check whats wrong and WTF!!! My S4 screen was very HOT. I cannot believe its still alive on that temp that can almost melt my plastic protector casing. It's reaaly hot just like a flat iron. What i did was pull out that plastic protector. The phone itself was much hotter than the protector cover. I quickly pull the back cover, pull the battery and put everything infront of electric fan. After a few minutes everything were in cool temp. I put the battery back and the back cover, turned it on, then after the start-up completed i've pulled the status bar because i want to continue the downloading. Then my problem comes... The color of WIFI icon was NOT green(ON) and not even grey(OFF) its slight darker green, its in the state of turning to green(ON). I've tap and hold it to open the wifi menu and then, i've noticed that it's really turning to ON.... But it never turned on. I've turn it off and on nothing's changed. After a few forum reading, i manage to turn my wifi on by deleting the root/data/misc/wifi/wpa_suplicant.conf. Because someone saying that the wifi driver cannot read it and have to delete to force the system to make another one and its true. Ofcourse, i did a backup. But my wifi cannot remember my passkey after i turned it off.
Please help me... Did i damage some hardware? I really love my s4.
Anyone can help me here pls..
