Just a few questions:
For those using an unlocked Galaxy S in the US, is there any 3G (data) issue you are noticing?
How is performance and availability of 3G with 1900Mhz spectrum when using a Galaxy S?
I am in NJ (Mercer county) and was wondering if anyone here was in NJ and had an unlocked SGS on AT&T and whether they were getting mainly EDGE.
How will I get official patches or Android updates for my unlocked SGS, does anyone have a link to a download page?
Where did you buy? How much?
H77P://negrielectronics.com/samsung-i9000-galaxy-s-black-8gb-unlocked.html
Updates should go through the samsung kies software (available on samsungmobile.com) or OTA. OTA is definitly possible even with unlocked handsets as I have received them on my unlocked htc desire.
Don't know which method samsung will choose tho, since I haven't received any updates so far.
Any user of an unlocked SGS in USA that can comment on the AT&T 3G (data) performance in the North East region?
I know AT&T is moving most 3g to 850Mhz but I cannot imagine that they would abandon 3G on the 1900Mhz spectrum since international (GSM) travelers would be unable to get any 3g when visiting (especially for business travelers).

They are not moving anything off 1900Mhz, they are just adding new 3g towers only on 850Mhz.
If you had 1900Mhz 3g in your area, it is not going to go away.
If you did not have 3G in your area or had spotty 3g and recently got good 3g then it is probably on 850Mhz.
I have same issue in my use. Used 2 get 3g off of i93. Thiswith my i8910 euro phone on 1900 now only edge same on galaxy. So they r definitely moving towers to 850.

nice nice nice!!!
Thanks for all the information guys.
From what I am hearing it seems that this is a well designed phone (except for the plastic feel of the back and the lack of a flash for the camera).
This is my fist android phone and as a person who is seriously tied to my corporate email system (Exchange 2007), I can only hope for a quick implementation of Firmware 2.2 which will allow tighter integration with office systems (SSL VPN and Exchange).
I am really hoping to get this phone soon and I will be flashing it with the latest firmware as soon as I open it.
On a side note (not that I would try it without someone else going first) is anyone testing MoDaCo's custom build with WJG1 as the base? Also, if I am running a custom ROM I assume that when an official build is out I have to wipe and re-flash with an official build first before upgrading to 2.2?
I GOT IT !!
So far I am really loving the phone. Since I like breaking things I am going to flash it now with the latest FW since it has this singtel firmware.
Now I just have to find a way to rip all the DRM from my apple/itunes songs to be totally free.
Quick question, the email client sucks. I need to only let it pull email from my "inbox" folder not other (Exchange) email folders, How do I configure it to do that? Or is there a better app for corporate email that I can use?

Hi guys,
I received word late yesterday from my contacts that Telstra will be supplying the HD2 exclusively for at least 2-3 months on the NextG network.
No word on pricing yet but I have got a loose release date! For us Aussies the wait isn't too great which is a bit of a surprise for me, I thought we'd wind up being last! So without further ado:
Just wanted to let you know we finally have an idea on the Touch HD2;
Touch HD 2 – Due for release mid - late January. Exclusive to Telstra for 2 - 3 months. Launching with Windows Mobile 6.5

My name is already down for one, I can't wait!
I guess anyone not on Telstra can just use an imported one... Blue Fly Mobile are selling them for $900 at the moment.
Do you know if the "official" Australian version will have anything special that a UK one, for example, doesn't have?

A NextG compatible version is what I am after so I am holding out for it.
Basically Telstra bloatware will be the only special thing on it haha. Which I'll remove with cooking my own ROM. And of course NextG compatibility.
Hopefully the main difference will be that it will have the 850 3G band, like the Touch HD did, which will make it useable on most of AT&T's 3G network in the US.

Yea, a sweet US 3G radio.
it seems a telstra rom already leaked (841 is telstra rom code)

btw, what does it mean that the phone is only exclusive for 2-3 months? So for those 2-3mos, you can only get it through telstra (no e-retailers)? Can you get it sim-free during this time or after that time?

it simply means that in Australia, the Australian mobile phone networks like Vodaphone, Telstra, Optus, T-mobile,etc will have to wait a few months before they can have the option of selling it on their networks.
you can still get the device anywhere else in the world unlocked and as long as the device has the right network frequencies for your SIM card then you'll be fine. there are slightly different HD2's made for the world markets, because not all countries use the same network frequencies (USA being the odd-man-out of the world)
i bought my HD2 from the UK (Handtech) delivered for Au $840. the frequencies are a match for my 3mobile SIM card and the device is "unlocked" so i don't have any bull**** about vendor locking and software bloat.
Telstra/AT&T
Please post here when it is available through on online retailer with the 850Mhz Band so that US buyers on AT&T can rejoice and spend some dough...
Thanks
Am I reading this correct that the HD2 will not work on NextG? Is there a fix for this?
tchoklat
I highly doubt a Telstra released 3G mobile wouldn't work on their NextG network, kinda defeats the point.

Because the HD2 runs on UMTS 900/2100MHz. You have to wait for HTC to release another model that's NextG compatible (runs 850/2100MHz UMTS) in early 2010.
damn, what do I do with my new phone then?

use it as a $800 coaster.
or sell it.
I'm using the HD2 imported from overseas 2 weeks ago through one of those dodgy Australian online retailers (electronicbazaar.com.au) and I'm happily using my nextG simcard without problems.
The phone was shipped from HK.
I have no problems browsing or coverage but technically I shouldn't be getting access to the network.
I guess the question remains as to whether I'm accessing the nextG network or not. The carrier name is "3G 3Telstra" on the dialer and I get the "H" symbol come up on the phone. That looks good enough for me.
This information, plus p3ngwin's use of the phone on 3Mobile suggests it's not accurate to say that we can't use an unbranded Leo in Australia...
@tchoklat - have you tried using the phone yet with your NextG SIM?
Yes it fails to log on and I only see the odd 'G' or 'E' come up suggesting sporadic connection to the 3G network, not NextG. I understand that the 'H' means HSPDA or NextG

In a way you have access to Telstra 3G but not NextG. Read this http://www.austech.info/137073-post16.html
Telstra 3G = UMTS 2100 which provides 60% population coverage
Telstra NextG = UMTS 850 which provides 99% population coverage
I have a NextG sim when I was using my TP2 (the sim is my Leo now) and on my Leo I only get the EDGE network and no NextG.
Just what I have found as we have no or limited Edge where I live so the phone is basically useless. I have listed it on Ebay for anyone interested.
Ebay item number 110471705953
thanks all.

I'll tell you what, I have the unlocked import of the HD2 in the USA on at&t and the edge data on this phone seems as good as my last 3g phone. I think the speed of the phone is making up for it. Now of coarse, WITH the 3G coverage is another story but the edge is acceptable to me on this device.

Im hoping for T-Mobile but come one it was announced months and months ago and still no word on carriers.......
There is no confirmation of this, but we do know come July T-Mobile is launching a new Samsung device that is suppose to be Android... so we shall see!
does the galaxy s support 3G on both t-mobile and at&t? the specs say it does HSPA on 1900 and 2100mhz.
wikipedia says t-mobile uses 1700/2100mhz for 3G. the galaxy s only does 2100mhz. so what does this mean? can the galaxy s do 3G on t-mobile?
wikipedia says at&t uses 850mhz and 1900mhz for 3G. galaxy s only does 1900mhz. again, what does this mean? can the galaxy s do 3G on at&t?
this is a little confusing. sorry, i wish i knew more about 3G frequencies. someone please enlighten me. does 3G require operation on two frequencies, or does support for only one 3G frequency allow 3G data connections?
the reason i'm asking is that i'll be in singapore soon, and i might be able to buy a galaxy s, but i want to make sure i can use 3G in the US.
Since the device launches in Europe first, the supported frequencies are tailored for this market. I am pretty sure you will get versions appropriate for the US market, probably even one with CDMA.
ok, so a US version would support different frequencies than the european one. does this mean that the european one definitely can't do 3G in the US? thanks.

I think its either T-Mo runs the same as Euro countries and At&t doesn't or Vice versa. I know one is on a different spectrum. Thats why the nexus had to have a different radio to run 3g on At&t.

anyone got a definitive answer to this question?
It sounds like a phone based on this model (to be called the Samsung i897 or the Samsung Captivate) is rumored to be coming to AT&T soon. I hope it's true!
Ditto. As much as I like my Tilt2, I need something more reliable and less dated (can't stick with WM6.5 much longer...). Wish there was some release date somewhere or else I'll cave into a N1.
Andy Rubin, Googles VP for development will be in Seoul for the launch of the Galaxy S on Tuesday. Maybe, there will be an announcement then of US carriers.
what scares me the most about the galaxy s coming to at&t is that what if they gimp the features like they mandate that you can only video chat via wifi, or they drop the memory? I am somewhat thinking whether it would be smarter just to buy the international version unlocked since it has the 1900 UMTS 3g bands.

If someone can confirm that the international version would work on AT&T's 3g network, I'd rather just preorder right now to get a vanilla version of the phone rather than a stripped/bloated version.

i found this article on androidcentral that says the international version won't do 3G in the USA.
http://www.androidcentral.com/hands-samsung-galaxy-s
The bad news is that what we're looking at here is NOT a U.S.-friendly 3G phone. The hardware as displayed supports EDGE at 850/900/1800/1900MHz, meaning that you could use it in the U.S. But the 3G bands are 900/1900/2100MHz, so you're out of luck if you're looking for the standard 850MHZ 3G goodness.

I've been reading a lot of posts, in several places. I see a lot of mixed information about the bands. As it stands now, I'm not sure I trust any of the info. How do you know who is correct?
I've seen more that say it will work than say it won't.
All that being said, I feel safer getting one that has both AT&T bands. Otherwise, I'll find myself somewhere that it doesn't work. But then next is the concern about AT&T crippling.
This was posted today: http://androidandme.com/2010/06/news/samsung-galaxy-s-tipped-for-july-21st-launch-on-t-mobile/
A version of the Galaxy S with T-Mobile applications first appeared last month, but the video evidence was taken down and we have not heard much since then. Now a trusted source has told our friends at TmoNews that the Galaxy S could launch on the Big Magenta as early as next month.
If the tipster is to be believed then T-Mobile will launch the Samsung Galaxy S on July 21st. Based on previous rumors and speculation, this time frame matches up nicely with what we have been hearing. Samsung said the Galaxy S would come to the U.S. this summer and T-Mobile is in need of a high-end phone for their Android lineup.

The vast majority of AT&T's 3g coverage in the US is 850 Mhz. There is some 1900, but they are working on transitioning it to 850.
Tmo uses 1700/2100 for 3g, so again it's the same case.
You'll get some 3g coverage in some areas, but you can't plan on it. Neither carrier has maps available that break down the coverage by frequency
I personally am hoping for an australian version soon. The telstra stuff generally runs on 850/2100, which makes it totally usable for AT&T users in the states.

thanks paul. that's what i figured.
I am on AT&T for the main reason that I travel frequently to Europe and Asia (Japan, Hong Kong) and it's the carrier who happens to have devices with 3G bands compatible nearly worldwide (Even though I don't like so much the price AT&T is costing me...)
So... really considering now to switch to the Galaxy tab and say good bye to my good old TP2 (heavily overclocked so still with a bit of life in it !)
I have a few questions
1. there are rumors here and there saying the Tab for AT&T wont have the front facing camera (And then some other places where it's listed as a spec of the AT&T tab). Anybody can confirm / infirm this ? (Would be really pissed to pay such a price for the device if it has been castrated)
2. AT&T is the last US carrier not to have announced a launch date for the tab... (Maybe it's willing to be a bit nice to Apple and its recently commercialized iPad, or maybe it's just an old and slow company...). Pure speculation: is there a chance we'll be able to switch the tab bands from T-Mobile like some have successfully done with other Samsung phones from the galaxy family ?
3. Another pure speculation: has Samsung actually disabled the hardware for voice calls on the US versions ? I hope his will be solved by flashing another firmware. Otherwise I'll just end up buying an international version (Which will be much more expensive...)
You can get the unlocked north american version which should be out by next week. It will cost you an arm and a leg but WILL work with the 850/1900 at&t 3g bands. Here are a few sites that have it:

Thanks. Yes these bands are AT&T ones. Though waiting a few more weeks should allow to get it directly from AT&T at a lower price...
The good news is, if the websites are correct about the specs, the front facing camera is there (And I doubt Samsung will make a different Tab)
Seem to imply the voice call work to (negrielectronics) but it could be a mistake or a trick (works only through skype...) or just simple taht we are talking about an overseas model with the right 3G bands

What concerns me are the comments that suggest US carriers will somehow restrict their service to GT so only data will work (no voice). So that raises the question for those of us who get the unlocked version - how do we get our Gt on to ATT or others? I guess I'm asking which ATT phone is it close enough to that I can acuire and swap the SIM card?

Well, from what I hear is the 850/1900 band version will be an unlocked north amaerican version which can work with rogers (Canada) and at&t for the US by just adding your SIM card in. It is unknow weather the at&t network will identify the galaxy tab and change your plan accordingly if that is even how it will work with at&t. I beleive they WILL have a different plan for data for this device as T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon are following this. Also, the at&t version WILL be a different model in appreance and features as this unlocked one will not. Probablly because at&t WILL remove the front camera and who knows what else (thanks to the iphone). That is why the samsung site has not put the at&t version on their site yet. really do hope it will be treated as a PDA phone thru at&t's network (for the unlocked version)

That's funny as they told me last Friday that the warehouse in CA is expecting them on November 10th. Also, I work near the mobile city online store in NYC and stopped in there and they said this week they would have them. hmmm

Mmh all I have been reading so far sucks

I have my G-Tab now (Euro version with phone and data working great on AT&T in USA) Be glad to answer questions. General comment: I LOVE it! The form factor and wt are just right for me and it has all the features I miss on my iPad. Only criticism is that I find Android a bit less stable than IOS but that might be what Gingerbread or Honeycomb will address.

Are you getting good 3g coverage? I see your in PA... Close to me. I know the 1900 band does blanket this area to some degree but the 850 band is alot stronger. I think I may wait for a full 3g band with both 850/1900 bands. Seems like the bell version will be the answer to that. Glad to hear you love the device.

Yes the 3g coverage is fine in the Reading area (better than my iphone, not sure why) I made decision to go for the Eur version when it became apparent the ATT version would be limited to data (no phone) and I couldn't get an answer on whether the "North American" version (with 850 UMTS) would arrive with phone capability OK. I saw a map of ATT 1900 coverage and saw that it takes care of at least 75% of the US, including virtuall all of the East, so I'm comfortable with my decision.

Hey Guys,
I am thinking of buying a Galaxy Tab, but I am unsure of which carrier I want to go with.
I am from the UK, but living in the US. I do go back to the UK occasionally, so want something that works there - this would mean I would either need the T_Mobile or the AT&T versions.
However, I believe that AT&T and T-Mobile use different frequencies for their 3G signal here in the US, with AT&T being the only one that is the same as the UK/EU.
I was wanting to to with the T-Mobile version as I read somewhere that their speeds would be faster, but if 3G is not going to work in the UK, i'll pass on it. T-Mobile also had a subsidised version which is also an incentive.
So, do any of you guys know if the hardware radio has this frequency limitation or is it something to do with the software? I ask this because my AT&T blackberry was able to connect to T-Mobiles 3G network while I was over in the US last time so it is possible to havea radio that can connect to both.... Perhaps they did not do this though for cost savings....
Why don't u buy a Euro tab. There was a post stating he could use the Euro tab with both voice & data with AT&T sim. No hacking was needed

I couldn't guarantee you that a TMo US Tab would work on UK 3G, but what I can say is that my TMo US G1 worked fine.
Regards,

I missed up my Telus 4G 10.1
I could restored back but it seems I used unbranded 3G stock rom
it works fine but network mode showing CDMA not HASP+ as expected from 4G
so it behave as 3G not 4G
if anyone can post canadian stock rom or even a backup that would help me to bring back to normal
don't have the original firmware for my Rogers Tab. They are labelled 4G in Canada but that is actually 3g+ (there is a nice wikipedia discussion you can look up) and the Rogers model at least, will only run on 3G firmware not the LTE versions you can access -- the bootloader on mine has KG8 as its firmware, you can download that from sammobile if you want to restore your system or you can download the latest 3.1 firmware Ki2 here on xda or through check fus. The most recent firmware is 3,2 and there is a stock KJ6 version and a custom version Overcome 2.0.0 available.
The 3.2 based roms are significantly smoother, faster and without the launcher and browser lag sometimes evident with 3.1.
So, if its just to maximize your own use, I would suggest either stock or custom 3.2 firmware -- again, they will all show 3G as designation.
I already installed the KJ6 3.2 which runs very smooth with no problem
but I can see only CDMA or GSM
what you see in your network mode is it CDMA or HSAP as mentioned in user manual
and if I have a data plan up to 21 mb/sec do I can get this speed with this KJ6 rom
download network signal app from the market: it displays the signal our device is actually receiving on either wifi or 3G+: the device will support the speed, it whether or not you are in an area with that coverage
rogers will show umts
as wikipedia explains
UMTS supports maximum theoretical data transfer rates of 45 Mbit/s when HSPA+ is implemented in the network.[2] Users in deployed networks can expect a transfer rate of up to 384 kbit/s for R99 handsets, and 7.2 Mbit/s for HSDPA handsets in the downlink connection. These speeds are significantly faster than the 9.6 kbit/s of a single GSM error-corrected circuit switched data channel, multiple 9.6 kbit/s channels in HSCSD and 14.4 kbit/s for CDMAOne channels.
Since 2006, UMTS networks in many countries have been or are in the process of being upgraded with High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), sometimes known as 3.5G. Currently, HSDPA enables downlink transfer speeds of up to 21 Mbit/s. Work is also progressing on improving the uplink transfer speed with the High-Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA). Longer term, the 3GPP Long Term Evolution project plans to move UMTS to 4G speeds of 100 Mbit/s down and 50 Mbit/s up, using a next generation air interface technology based upon Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing.
the last iteration is LTE which we can access using the 7500 version we have but not with the sim card we have
Howdy! I have a stock Canadian (Telus) Samsung 10.1 4G [GT-7500DTLSKH4]. If you'd care to provide explict instructions (for this Telus model) on how to root and backup rom, I can archive and forward. If you also have instructions to "unroot" said device, that would be greatly appreciated, too. Further, have you received the 3.2 update for this model as of yet? If you have, was it VIA WIFI or OTA? The reason I ask is that it informs me there are no updates available (I use WIFI only at this time).
Thanks in advance!
Thomas
For Telus:
www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=3&o=1&m=GT-P7500D&r=-1#modelsa
Rogers, and Bell also at SamMobile Firmware page.
Telus is 3.1 (as is bell)
Rogers updated to 3.2 but has lots of rogers crap. ALSO note your telus sim with this firmware will pull the wrong apn, it'll get sp.telus.com and leave you with a HUGE data bill. SO if you use it make sure to change the APN before connecting to mobile data to isp.telus.com
Enjoy
Can the Rogers Firmware be installed to the bell model?
In the development forum the stock rogers is there ... I have the 7500r and running latest ics working great .... data rates are perfect

Yes you can flash bell, rogers or telus firmwares. I've converted several.
Enjoy

I hope you will forgive me for clarifying but I have the 7500R and I could flash the 7500M bell firmware to it with no issues?
Before any one asks why I would like to ask my other question... Has any one seen a Galaxy Tab re network lock? My device was unlocked since like November and all of a sudden today I am getting the SIM network unlock PIN. I tried the original unlock code but it doesn't work. As well I took the bell sim and used it in the Nexus S and accessed data so the sim seems fine. I know this might need to go to another thread but I thought maybe I should try flashing the bell rom? As well maybe I should just try a hard reset first? Any suggestions.
Thank you...
So it turns out some how it must have relocked... I used an app from the Marketplace that I linked to from XDA and unlocked it again... The original unlock was a code entry so I'm not sure why or if it should have relocked but I am back up and running now.
Sorry for the super late reply, I don't really monitor the threads.
Anyhow yes you can put any of the Canadian firmwares on your Rogers Tab. Or vs. No issues I've seen to date.
As for your second issue. A few months ago the same thing happened to one of my tablets it seemed to relock itself and would no longer accept the factory unlock code. I had to edit the nv file directly to fix that issue. And strangely enough another phone I had from Telus Samsung facinate 4G, did the exact same thing, and then another when that one was replaced by Samsung. On the facinate using a telus sim the phone would still ask for a unlock code. So something strange was happening. The phones were brand new, and never rooted, completely stock. The only thing I did was put in my kodoo sim and enter the unlock code.
So three devices in total did it.
No problems on the late reply. I ended up using an app by one of the xda members to edit the nv as you mentioned you had to do. I am actually very glad I purchased the app as it appears if you dont reverse it to check for firmware upgrades it is failing to connect.
In regards to the roms does anyone have any experience with one being better then the other? I am using a bell sim so was just curious if I should flash bell firmware.
Thank you for your reply.

The firmware has nothing to do with your sim... I am running a generic ics build on my rogers p7500r, rogers 3g+ stillbworks, I plug in my tmobile $2/day sim card and it just works.
Good luck, pershots daily ics builds work great and so does overcome!
