"4G" in Hawaii (Oahu) - EVO 4G General

Hey, if anyone in Hawaii is considering going with an EVO, consider this:
The 4G network here is shared with two other service providers (time warner and clearwire), and averages LESS THAN 1 Mbps. I have speedtested it all over Oahu and this is the truth. 3G is around 1-2Mbps here. 4G is an absolute joke. Most of the time its around 0.5Mbps. So much for that extra $10/month. I can hardly bring myself to flip the 4G on to test it anymore... just a waste of time.
-UNROOTED, thanks to OTA update (formerly UNREVOKED/tethering) Evo 4G user.

I can second that. Just got back from Honolulu. Did get some spikes up in the 3s, but generally no faster than 3g and very spotty. Was hoping it is better than that in most places. Especially LA and DC once available.

Sounds oversold like the Las Vegas market.
WiMAX is nice in markets where the uptake is low, or when it's new to a city.

Yeah, I've been pretty underwhelmed with 4G performance here in Hawaii. Hopefully they do something about it, or flip some magical switch and turn it on turbo.

I believe 4G is Clearwire everywhere.

Yea because clearwire is the company that makes the 4G its not sprint.

We'll be on 3G a lot:..How does Sprint's compare to At&t?

Even in Chicagoo...I've picked up that I'll be on 3G a fair amount of the time especially indoors....
Ha anyone had a chance to do a fair comparison of At&t and Sprints 3G networks please?
I have Nex1 on At&t and am really happy with network data transfer....would hate to take a step back!
Thanks for anyone's experienceswith this.
There's no way you will take a step back. CDMA 3g (EVDO) is tons faster than GSM 3G. It's just faster period. With TMo 3G in my area I was getting 800kb/s which was insane for Tmo. Normally ATT gets a lot worse. I only got those speeds because TMo wasn;t used around here. In Philly I got a lot less. Now Sprint on the other hand gets me at least 1MB/s average use in my area or in Philly. Also Sprint has the fastest internet period. Faster than Verizon too. So when you do get 4G it will be even better than that. But expect at least 1MB/s speeds and possibly a lot more depending where you are.
Well that's great news! But my At&t 3G here in Chicago is rarely under 1M on the Nexus.
Speedtests often have it over 2M. Ive heard only mediocre reports of Sprints network but if Evdo is at those speeds consistantly I'll be a happy camper on 3G!
Sprints network is much more consistent. One thing you have to remember is many times when those speed tests are taken several times in a row is caching can skew the results. I've found sprint to be far more reliable here in se florida. I can remember having to switch to edge many times during prime time because my iphone would just sit there waiting to load on 3g.
LI too am concerned about sprints data speeds. Here in Minneapolis on AT&T's 3g network I always get 1.4+. I easily get over 2 late at night. My friends hero on sprint gets 7-800k 100% of the time. My AT&T 3g only drops to 7-800k when I'm in the far out suburbs. Both the hero and my 3gs are running the speedtest.net app from their respective app stores.
There is a reason AT&T advertises the countries fastest 3g netwok.

That is not true at all, gsm is much faster than cdma...or has the potential to be. Right now it is at par with cdma, a bit ahead actually, but not my astronomical amounts.
But honestly, who cares, because at&t has such ****ty 3G coverage that it doesn't matter if it is faster, sprint has really good 3G coverage(WAY WAY more than both at&t and t-mobile), and when you aren't in sprint covered areas, you get to use verizons towers due to a deal sprint and verizon made. They average around 900kb/s more or less, during heavy daytime use, it can go to 750kb/s. It gets a high of around 1.3mb/s.
For those interested, sprints 4G network gets an average of 4-6mb/s.

Not true at all, cdma is fundamentally superior to gsm. GSM is used around the world because it is the cheaper older technology.

IMO at&t is crap, the only reason they are even semi-popular is because they got the iphone on a 4-year contract with apple. Biggest complaint of iphone users is the dropped calls with at&t.
I just switch myself from at&t to Sprint and also got HTV EVO I use to be iPhone Owner
now iPhone is a good phone but coz of at&t networks piece of **** ... but man I m loving EVO its amazing ..

My biggest complaint is in fact dropped calls. Maybe 1 or 2 a month, but the data speeds I see with At&t are much, much faster than Sprint or Verizon in*MY* area. http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/62NT3_cZ7mz7n3hZf0GafQ?feat=directlink During the day I get 1.4+, but I generally test late late a night when I get home from work.
I spend 90% of my time using data on my phone, so the slower Sprint/Verizon network in *MY* area is a real concern for me. A dropped call now and then isn't.
I have the at&t N1 and get 2Mbps+ on avarage.
With Sprint (i have the EVO that was given at google I/O) i get really bad speeds on EVDO (with good signal)
I have never yet seen it go over 1Mbps. ususally get 300Kbps and i tested in mutiple places.
This is considered VERY slow and i really hope this is just an issue with the radio of the EVO whcih can be fixed.
Damnit..... Just what I was afraid of.

Riverside, CA 4G a Joke

So I take my son to a medical appointment and I get 4g here. Average speeds of 8.5mbps down and 1.4 up. Crazy fast. However the 4g only gets signal in maybe a 3 mile radius. What a joke. Its obvious there is a wimax tower, so why such bad saturation? Been that way since I got the phone, it blows that they don't get their S together and give us here a decent signal, speaking as my average 3g speeds are 300k down and what's weird 600k up. Faster upload than down? Bittorrent on me!

Well you are in Riverside.....
Come down into OC and you will be surprised where you have 4g. Very few dead spots.

RE:
I understand that I'm in Riverside, but you can even see from Sprint's map they have a 4g tower here, but such small coverage? That's ridiculous. I've read numerous articles how Sprint is doubling down on 4g and Android in 2011, I'd really like to see that. I know it's also partly with Clearwire, which Sprint owns part of. Clearwire is having bigtime money issues and I can't see WIMAX spreading at any kind of rate in the short term. I'm curious if this is the reason why Dan Hesse has said so many favorable things about LTE lately, because the company they used to help implement WIMAX couldn't get the job done.

4g for the 1st time

so after almost a year i have NEVER USED 4g due to the fact that my state DOES NOT HAVE 4g and im forced to pay for 4g. Well i went away this week and the place im at have 4g, but to be honest i dont see a difference. seems like 3g is just as fast.

What did you expect for $10 . . . .
It depends where you are. South of Boston I pull down 7-14Mbps on 4G vs 100kbps on 3G. Trust me, I can tell the difference. Streaming Netflix is smooth as can be and I can barely stream Slacker radio without pauses on 3G here.
4G is great here, when it is working, but it is sketchy at best as far as the actual coverage here.

People on these forums pride themselves in not being as "uninformed" as Apple users.... yet we keep having people say **** like this.
You don't pay for 4g.
Whether the phone is 4g capable OR NOT, every new line has this charge.
Depends on the network in your area. Check out the SpeedTest.net app. Here are the typical results I get:
WiFi: 9M Down, 4M Up
4G: 4M Down, 1M Up
3G: 700K Down, 50K Up
A good signal on 4G is 10x faster than 3G and half as fast as my home WiFi. Hope this helps.
its not a 4G access fee, its a PREMIUM DEVICE FEE....which apparently applies to a POS Palm Pre that I wanted to connected temporarily to one of my lines, however does not apply to the TP2. (which is much more "premium" than a Palm Pre ever will be.)
With all of that said, it seems that day by day Sprint service gets worse and worse.
I don't think its just my area, but many others.
In the past 6 months I have spent time in:
San Francisco (where 4g causes random reboots)
Los Angeles (painful, think prostate exam, speeds)
Long Beach (where the 3g is faster than the 4g)
Ventura (average slow sprint speeds, 4g does not work, but appears to be present?)
Sacramento (here I roamed on verizon with excellent speeds)
Elk Grove (the FASTEST speed I have even seen on a cell phone, on of course Verizon) This place was in the middle of nowhere.
Fresno (slow sprint speeds)
Visalia (roamed on verizon, great speeds)
Bakersfield (slow sprint speeds)
San Bernardino(slow sprint speeds)
Palmdale (i live here, slow is not slow enough to describe how slow it is)
Lancaster (slow slow slow)
Tehachapi (fast verizon roam)
Arizona:
Phoenix (slow 3g speeds, occasional slow 4g)
Gilbert (slow 3g speeds) *NOTE* I went to the Sprint store here, it has the best sprint service I have ever seen.
Mesa (slow 3g)
Tucson (slower 3g, almost pointless trying, even on handset)
Tolleson (decent 3g)
Nevada
Henderson (decent 3g)
Las Vegas (decent 3g)
North Las Vegas(decent 3g)
There were many other in-between places, that were of no significant value of information, except to say SLOW SPRINT.
As you can see, I have moved around quite a bit with work. At each location I spend an average of 2+ days in a stationary location. The only thing that is consistent is the fast speed when roaming on verizon.
I have been with Sprint for many years, and I keep hoping things improve, yet they never do. The connections are no better than they were on my Sanyo 5300 tethered.
Houston, TX, 4g is stable and consistently get 4-7M down, it definitely depends on location.

Let's cut the rhetoric already. And lets say what it really was and how we got here. I live near Phoenix and unless I want to drive to the east valley or Prescott I pretty much won't be seeing 4G in this area anytime soon. I have come to that reality. But when I bought the phone I was told the $10 in easy terms was for Wimax service. And at that point, living in a population of 4.1m it didn't seem we would be forgotten. Fast forward a year and paying for a service that I have yet to turn on, it is still a 4G fee. And that is simply because my data is the same 3G that my wife's Samsung Moment and daughters BB Style gets. And we activated my daughters BB Jan. 30, right before Sprints Data got upgraded from regular 89 octane to Premium 93 Octane. But for some reason I am not seeing anything Premium about it. So you see, I don't have a new line, therefore I pay a 4G fee, which at the time was "Premium Data.", and everyone else in my family is paying a less than premium data fee. Which is alright, just lets me know my 3G is that much better than theirs.
This is/was Sprint's way of handling a bunch of disgruntled customers and keeping their investors happy. I mean, why would you remove a surcharge? Instead charge everyone a flat rate. Increase profit margin and keep investors happy. It was a class action law-suit just waiting to happen. Charging millions of people for a service that couldnt be rendered.
And if you want to hear it from the mouth of a Sprint employee from when the Evo was released and why the charge was introduced here it is.
This is from John Taylor's blog from May 12th last year. John Taylor is basically the spokesman for Sprint that talks to the press about Public Policy.
" There have been a TON of questions about this monthly Premium Data charge. I hope this will clear things up.
If you buy the Sprint 4G EVO, you have to pay this $10 charge each month. This is specific to the device. It's not related to whether you are using 3G or 4G. It is required if you have the phone.
Because the phone has a faster processor, a huge 4.3 inch screen and an 8 megapixel camcorder/camera, we expect you will be using a lot more data than you would with our other devices. These features will give you capabilities that have previously never been available on a wireless device and we think they provide a premium experience. (Remember, this is the world's first 3G/4G Android phone.)"
http://tech.johntaylor.co/more-detail-on-the-sprint-evo-4g-10month-prem
So you can say what it is now. But it doesn't give a customer that purchases a Samsung Transform 4G abilities and that data is not any more premium for a 3G device anymore the day before or after February 1st when the Premium Data charge for all phones went into effect.
So in closing. We pay for 3G for my wife's and daughters phone. And I pay the Premium Data so that I can have the ability to turn on 4G if I am in a 4G area. Because when I bought my phone under this contract it was device specific.
Thank you for informing me how uninformed I am.

Verizon's 4G LTE makes me cry.

So, my cousins, who have Verizon came over to my house today. I asked if I could look at the Droid Charge, they said sure. Upon turning on the phone, I instantly notice the 4G LTE icon next to the signal bars, on top of it being 4-5 bars out of 6. So I had to do a speedtest to compare with Sprint's 4G (at my house, mind you). Verizon's 4G LTE hit 20,000 Kbps DL, and 3,000 kbps UL. Whereas Sprint hit 1,100 kbps DL, 300 kbps UL. I decided to really test this monster called 4G and hit up my home WiFi via Comcast. My Comcast high speed internet home service hit 13,000 kbps DL, and 6,000 kbps UL. This just made me sad that Verizon's LTE had that much potential. Sprint's 3G speeds score 2,650(ish) at my house for DL, but it's nothing compared to LTE. Will Sprint's LTE be better than WiMax to this extent, or is it just the location of the towers?
I'm happy with Sprint's unlimited service, so switching carriers isn't even an option in my mind, but I am curious as to what Sprint's 4G plans are later on.
I did laugh though, that the overpriced Droid Charge is on FroYo still. lol typical Samsung.
I always wonder why people need 20 megabits on their phone...maybe for hot spot but other than that it is overkill. 2gb cap comes real fast at 20 megabits too.

Yep, which is exactly why I'm not on Verizon right now. lol! Verizon's 3G speeds are half Sprint's 3G speeds at my house. I just like the fact that the phone can handle downloading ROMs within seconds if necessary.
at least my data aint throttled .... yet.
The 2 gig cap is the problem. DL a movie and a few roms and the LTE is costing ya top $$$$$.

Me and my buddy who is on verizon with a charge also have done the compairsons showing verizon Is much faster. However verizons lte is very new, compared to "sprint" 4g which has sprint, comcast, and clear users on the network. When clear 4g hit seattle, I was early on the bandwagon and it wasn't uncommon for me to hit 14000 kbs down now I see maybe 7000kbs down on the regular. Also sprint teathering is the only way to get 4g without any throttling after heavy usage. Were as clear and comcast throttle after about 20gb usage a week roughly. So we will see as verizon loads its network what lte truely has to offer.

My wife has a Charge. I've watched the sickness that is their LTE. It also makes me glad I'm not sharing a bill. I think Sprint scares everyone else because they most resemble the mentality of Thomas Edison, “I shall make electricity so cheap that only the rich can afford to burn candles.”
The biggest impediment is money right now. Sprint and Clearwire need billions of dollars. Recent debt ceiling debacle has made corporate financing even harder and more expensive. Meanwhile, Lightsquared has to win over its regulatory issues concerning GPS.
The clock is ticking. Subscribers are fleeing. Ultimately, Sprint needs the iPhone ASAP.
My work is switching from sprint to verizon. I don't know why. But they are offering the lg revolution, the droid x, driod 2 incredible and of course the iphone 4. I told one guy good luck with that. I wouldn't mind trying the lg phone but still kinda lame they have to use a signal booster. So now my signal will be roaming

It very convenient when you're on the go, but when you're home WiFi is pretty much better to use than 4G because it doesn't strain the battery that much. The good thing about 4G is if Comcast is doing maintenance at your house like they did mine one night, you'll be without internet for a few hours and 4G as a temporary connection.
I generally get 6 Mbps download and 1 Mbps up. Plenty quick for a phone in my opinion. For some reason at my work though, WiMax consistently tests out between 9 and 11 Mbps. Makes me think that I am either close to a tower or there aren't many 4G users out there. Either way, I can download data faster than the average person can to their home PC. No complaints here.
Damn I wish I had 20000 kbps on my phone. I have no 4g here and Verizon is roaming In my area. Luckily I use my wifi all the time and get like 18 megs down.

Data Speeds slow? Its not sprint... its the phone.

So one day I was browsing around on craigslist and I saw a new condition Moto Photon for $250.00 ( I know, Its not the galaxy s 2) but hey its was a good price and its a nice world phone. Anyways, I couldn't believe how much faster my data speeds were!
Previously, I was getting around 200-300 kbps with the latest SRF on my Epic. I am now getting 500-700 kbps in the same location with the Photon. Its a fantastic device. The antennae on the phone is really top shelf, areas I would get 1 or maybe 2 bars with the Epic I get 3-4 with the Photon. In areas I couldn't even get data, I am watching netflix with not buffering. I really forgot you could stream Netflix and YouTube on 3g because with my old epic.... you just couldn't. Anyways I am not hating. I love the Epic. I will miss the the everyone in here. Trust me, there isn't much developing going on in the photon forums yet but I am sure things will pick up in time.
Overall I am really happy with the Photon. Just wanted to share my experience with everyone. Thanks for all the support and help along the way. Having the Epic and the support in the forums have really helped broaden my understanding of Android and the entire rooting process.
Thanks Again,
Justin
After having read some early reviews it did seem to have great antenna/reception. How is moto in terms of providing source to developers? I suppose its too early to tell how fast they release updates as well?
dunno if I buy this argument, though I do have my doubts about the Epic. I'm inclined to think Sprint has plenty to do with the problem.
I drove all over Manhattan today and whenever I was stopped in traffic - which basically every 2 minutes - I'd run speed tests for both 3G and 4G. Suffice it to say that from about Times Square up through Morningside Heights, the service is (with a few exceptions) dreadful. When you get a bit south, speeds are much better. Both my wife and I (she's on a Nexus S 4G) were able to get about 6Mbps on 4G down near the Holland Tunnel. Up where we live, it's a total crapshoot. Every so often it's ok, most of the time it's garbage. 3G is on par with dial-up where we live. A colossal waste of time.
Oh, and just for a little extra chuckle, consider this: at the moment we're in upstate NY, about 75 miles north of the city. Just ran a speed test and 3G is faster here than in most of Manhattan.
Yeah I am getting pretty consistent 5-7Mbps download speeds on 4G in SoCal. I don't have any complaints here

Moto is releasing updates for the stock rom almost every other day it seems. As of now there is no source code available to Dev's. I am not sure if/when that will happen. Right now we are just getting Pseudo Roms and themes. I haven't come across any noticeable bugs yet. Although Unlocking the Boot loader breaks 4g. In my case that is a non issue because we don't have 4g in most of Riverside County.

I am in a non 4g area so I am not really concerned with 4g speeds. My focus is 3g. I reside in a rural area of Riverside County in Southern California. I would get atrociously slow, spotty data. Getting the Photon made a huge difference. In the same location I would rarely ever hit 400 and frequently run between 200-300 kpbs I am getting 500-700 consistently. I'm just sharing my experience for others to draw on. Granted your location may keep this from applying to you specifically. But one of the things that drew me to the Photon in the first place was the well regarded hardware specifically the radio in the device.
Also Networks are different all over the place. The user load in Manhattan is presumably higher then a rural area of So-Cal. As well as the obvious building obstructions. When I was in Manhattan about 6 months ago I enjoyed my 4g speeds on my Epic which ranged anywhere from 4Mbps-7Mbps. Granted most of what I was using the phone for was uploading videos and looking for places to eat ;-) Sure its not as fast as WiMax can get but what do you need it faster for on your phone anyway? Video Streaming, Music Streaming all worked nearly instantaneous for me.
Again just my 2 cents I am not claiming to be a sprint messiah or anything. My first android device got faster data speeds too (HTC Hero). It was a big deal for me when I got my epic and noticed the data speeds were much more choppy and slow. In case this is a big issue for other Epic users getting ready to jump ship I wanted to share my experience with the Moto Photon 4g. Not to mention the Hardware is pretty sweet and its a world phone.

SoCal? Where? I've been all over San Diego (almost to Mexico) and I can't find anything.
Or did you mean Central California...you know, LA and all that NORTH of San Diego?

Lol.. well you know San Diego isn't a major city. kidding of course. I am right in between Orange and LA counties in Uptown Whittier. I have bull bar 4G inside my apartment and basically I have one small dead spot about a half mile away but it's rock solid everywhere else. I heard there's a small pocket in San Diego but I haven't heard of it working for anybody down there though.

Thanks Again,
Justin

When roaming my epic is super fast occasionally it's also fast on sprint's network. I think the 1900mhz antenna in this phone may not be so great. While roaming on 800mhz I get 1100k+ all the time.

San Diego has so many hills, not sure if they want to invest in wimax there at this moment
It's not the phone! It's SPRINT! For the last time I have talked to Sprint and they have had outages throughout different areas, mine included. My and my girlfriend, my kids and my ex all have Sprint and all have different phones. Epic, EVO, EVO 3D and Moto Photon. All were great then they ALL sucked. Issues in my area are fixed now and I have no data issues any longer and neither does my gf, kids or ex. None of us did anything to our phones to make the signal better. So for the last time, IT's SPRINT.... not the phone.

AGREED! Sprint service in my area was great a year ago and now it's slowly gone downhill. EVO 4G; Epic 4G; Epic 4G Touch; It doesn't matter which phone I use, Sprint's 3G performance is TERRIBLE.
Um, actually it's both. The Epic, (and the nexus too) have mediocre signal reception. Couple that with low signal strength and you get really slow data. If Sprint's coverage were better the weak reception wouldn't be as big an issue. If the phone were more sensitive it could deal with the lower signal strength better.
i have the eh07 modem and ecop5 rom and my 4g sucks..it hardly connects not sure whats the issue
I know for sure its the phone. nothing posted higher 3g speeds than my old HTC HERO.
I was around 2.5mb/s peaking and 1.8+ normal rate.
Now when I got the evo, the speeds were down. Epic the speeds were down. Photon speeds were down. Epic 4g Touch the speeds were up at 1.8
So my experience for fastest as follows:
Hero: fastest 3g @2.5mbs
Photon: fastest 4g upload @1919mbs
EpTouch: fastest 4g download @15.179mbs

It's not the phones! Again until about a month and a half ago my phone used to scream and now it sucks! I never had reception problems ever. Sprint has done something (at least in my area) to slow down data service. It's obvious.
Sprint certainly had outages in various areas. Common sense would say check Sprint Forums or do a simple Google search.
Phones certainly can have an effect on your speeds but not as much as a Tower.
Having both phones side by side its Sprint and not the phone....
