If you were to record something with the voice recorder and send it to a friend that doesn't have an EVO, just like a basic flip phone or something, would they be able to hear it? I know this didn't work on the iPhone and was wondering if it worked using the EVO. I want to record say like a 30 second audio clip and send it, would they be able to hear it?
Yeah it should send as a MMS (multi media message) and just about any phone made in the last 8 years can do that.
i think he was wondering more if the audio format was compatable. for example wav, mp3, ogg, aiff, etc
most phones handle wav and mp3.
i dont use the voice record option personaly (1st android phone coming off wm.) so i dont know what format it uses sorry =(

There will be a 3rd party program within a week that can record video. Jailbroken iPhones do it, the G1 is completely open... No worries.

I think ( *think* ) the reason is that qualcom and broadcom are in a legal dispute over some aspects of H.264 encoding in hardware and until till that is cleared up, no "official" recording apps will be made.

Yeah, I never said official. I just know there are plenty of people out there who want it, so developers will throw a program together in no time.
G1 Video File Formats...?
I have a trip coming up, with lots of airport connections/layovers. I used to convert video files and copy them to microSD cards for playback in my WinMo device. Will I be able to do this on my G1? What, if any, file formats will it support?
From what I can read, it plays videos with a YouTube player; can I somehow use that...?
youtube's format is flv you can try to convert to that
other then that it support whatever formats people develop

well duh....i was thinking more along the lines of the hardware. the chipset has to be able to output video using the ext-usb cable thing...
only way is over tcp/ip. But there are no apps for that yet.

Every attempt i have had at playing a video ends up in the same scenario....
My video will play for 3-4 second then begin to lag out and then i get a error saying sorry this video cannot be played.
no one has any advice?

unfortunately yeah for know until there is an update that supports other video formats i know it kinda sux
but the encoder found in that thread is pretty fast depending on the length of the video. also most mobile sites that stream 3gp vids work on the g1
What sucks is handango has a video player and converter for sale for the g1. I was all set to buy it but i tried downloading free trial and it says it is not intended for this device, DENIED!!!!
I have like 7 movies including the dark knight all run on mp4 and run great with video player from the market

you can go to WAREZ SITES ARE NOT ALLOWED and search for "iPod" and filter by video
all those videos that show up should play on the G1 using Cinema or other Video Players. This is NOT legal however and NO ONE SHOULD DO IT and I AM NOT ENDORSING OR RECOMMENDING IT. There is no Divx player that I know of and there may not ever be as playing mp4 and h.264 is extremely simple but Divx/xvid will need software decoding.
The battery in the G1 is MUCH MUCH less than your old WinMo, the battery is physically 1/3 of the size so expect 2 hours of video from disconnecting from the charger. May be more on plane mode and lower screen brightness, BT, Wifi, GPS all off.
The G1 has always had audio and video codecs for playing MP4 vids, put Google did not create a player interface to use it.
The three apps on the market now are interfaces that should have been in the player in the first place.

This is the app that I use to convert my dvd's,it works like a charm,I recommend mp4/h624 and 320x176,it'll be around 250/300mgs which is nice for a G1 screen...of course it could be 500 or 700mgs and the quiality will be better.

Is there anyway to get the standard HTC mediaplayer (coverflow etc...) to play OGG files?
It works in Coreplayer but not the standard player (which is what I prefer to use).

Thanks... that is such a shame.. I don't have many OGG's but enough to not want to convert them all again (and probably lose quality).
I'm not sure how it compares to OGGs, but MP3 can be converted to VBR as well, so it may make no difference to quality. Get a trial version of Sony Sound Forge - it'll do a batch conversion for you.
VBR?... erm as a format? MP3 generally uses a variable (VBR), average (ABR) or constant (CBR) bitrate encoding method for various types including MP3. OGG is a different format, the quality is comparable to MP3 really but I believe the files are smaller.

Yeah they are. Most people rip MP3s at a fixed bit-rate, which is why I said about VBR. That's the only reason I've used OGG before now.
I was just pointing it out in case you didn't know. File size is obviously a different story though!
Ah ok... I generally use ABR 160kbps LAME for MP3....
a an aside... my first ever MP3 was in 1997... long before the iPod etc... how times have changed
ogg's for the same size file at VBR do play a little better than mp3 - if you play them one after the other, you can hear the difference, there is more "body" somehow to an ogg. The real advantage for me is that ogg will always offer gapless playback, so if 2 or more tracks run into each other, then the ogg will play as one continuous sound, mp3 will judder as it goes from track to track.
Ogg is much better really - shame it is not supported better in "standard" players - I normally use the Pocket Player on WinMo, great player with a great range of playable formats.

Dpes pocket player have touch screen coverflow though?.... thats one of the things I mostly miss when not using the standard HTC player (especially in the car).

Not sure what you mean by coverflow. Pocket Player is finger friendly for the most part - why don't you download a trial?

Odd thing, I have tried many rips of movies and most play fine, mp4 mp3 192 sound 4800khz, but some listed as ac3 sound dont play....picture is fine but no sound and yet I though sgs was ok with ac3, now i can convert the film and change the sound but that takes ages.....so is there an easy way to recode just the sound or is there a problem with phone?

yes tried a few, rock player will play the video bably picture breaks up but the odd thing is it is able to play the sound but it is also bad and breaking up but it tries to,

My default video player plays xvids, divx, h.264 AC3 encoded just fine. Infact using the 5.1 option does wonders to headphone surround sound especially using quality headphones.. Are you talking of .ac3 audio files only?
Its not all but last one was a rip of HellBoy 2, stunning picture and the audio codec is listed as mp4a 48000hz, picture is fine but just no sound.
Another was a rip of Armageddon, again nice picture but mp4a and gives no sound.
There has been others but I forget what codec they were, thought some were ac3...might be wrong, anyway tried these movies and only player that even tried to play the sound is rockplayer, but the sound is broken and so is the picture.
If it is the case mp4a is not playable then I would like to recode the film but just the sound, I want to leave picture as it is but change the sound to mp3, anyone know a program for this ?

Best way to convert long recorded lecture(wav) to mp3
Finally, found a good recorder which flawlessly records my long lectures and easy transfer to pc. App name : yovisoft recorder.
But size of the recording is huge, 300mb for 2.30 hours lectures. And it gets too heavy on my sd card.
I tried audicity software to convert the wav to mp3 which gave me 200 mb mp3 file. Still huge, isn't it.
Than I directly copied wav to my lumia via mtp. As soon as i copied it prompted to convert. I selected yes, it gave 14mb file but it very dull quality.
I don't have deep knowledge of sounds/frequency/bitrates, please gave me best way of good quality and low in size (up to 25~50mb) way to convert. I have 16gb sd card.
Quick questions
1. Which is best audio format for hearing recorded lectures.
2. Which bitrates-frequency will be ideal for recorded lectures.
3. Any direct software on pc, dedicated for such jobs?

Try audacity. It is a good converter between various formats.
He tried (and misspelled) Audacity, but he clearly didn't know how to use it because he got a huge file. Set the quality of the created file to something like 64kbps (if you use constant bitrate MP3 for voice, that's probably good enough, although MP3 isn't great for voice) and probably mono instead of stereo (halves the size, at the cost of losing the difference between right and left channels if those are present to begin with).
Actually, the fact that over two hours of uncompressed audio was only 300MB is *very* suspicious. For perspective, an audio CD (which is uncompressed, much like WAV) is only 72 minutes of audio (half of what you're trying to store) for roughly 700MB of data. Storing the amount of audio you're talking about at the quality of a CD would take about 1.5GB, not 300MB. Making it mono instead of stereo would halve that, but you're still talking a factor of 2.5x compression that isn't accounted for. Either the recording quality is very poor, or it's already compressed.
Well, the default lame encoding properties offer pretty good compression rate.
He either:
a) didn't have WAV as the original file format
b) Didn't convert to mp3 but to some lossless format.
c)messed up with the lame encoder properties.
hint: usually, bigger numbers tend to generate bigger files. The only exception is the compression rate, which only appears for lossless codecs.

I'm not shure about 3 hours, but it recorded without problem 1,5 hour which was something about 60 Mb. Than you have three options to share:
By creating a file server, uploading to skydrive or saving it to a phone music library and than usual way of sharing files with pc. You can try this app without paying. I'm not shure if it is stable on gdr3 as I'm waiting on my official update for Lumia 920.
Free version fails in long recording, it doesn't even show last recording.
Yovisoft is only the working one. But strange format and size.

Try Wavepad Sound Editor. You would be able to trim any unnecessary parts and when you save it, you can set the bitrate that you want it to be.

There was an update to Instant Incognito Recorder that adressed some bugs (crashes, etc), you can try it again and see if it works, also the dev. added an option to save to music collection so you can copy recordings via USB cable.
