There was something off about the iPhone to me back in 2007 when everyone first heard of the thing...prior to that I had a hard time adjusting to the apple experience, and being that I don't listen to music iPods and iTunes NEVER interested me. I do not like the way OS X is set up (seriously, finder bar? give me a menu in every window) but I did like the unification of the OS...anyways...the iPhone was cool, I liked it. It definitely was a game changer, no one will deny that. But this phone and it's sea of icons did not interest me...it was fun to look at, but just as with the finder bar, this sea of icons turned me off to the whole deal.
Anyways, I begin hearing whispers of an OS from Google...early screenshots leak (underwhelmed with the BB OS looking thing) then screenshots of the updated version begin to leak and what can I say...this thing was hideous...the icons, everything...just ugly...but I jumped in anyways...contract was up, I needed a new phone, and I liked everything else I read about it and I liked the desktop like feel of Android OS (that i inferred from images at least, as I hadn't touch the OS yet) anyways...October 20th, 2008...my phone arrives in the mail..I turn it on, I set it up...and I like it...not as polished as I would've hoped...but it was what it was.
Android still felt like a beta product (which carries to this day though to less an extent) but I managed despite my gripes with the phone...the market was immature, the OS was immature, MMS didn't work right, web was slow, browser was ugly, hell, the entire UI was what I would call ugly, but it was functional, and customizable as hell...at this point I didn't update but soon Jesusfreke released his rooted builds....and yea...the fun started then...I was no longer tied to T-mobile's release schedule...I had JFs 1.5, 1.6, tried hero, Eclair...then I heard of this Nexus One thingamajig...and I had to have it...So I had a plan.
I through sheer luck managed to acquire a seat at Google's Android Developers Lab in NYC for February 12th...at this point the Nexus had been out for a while, but me, knowing Google, KNEW I'd be getting a free phone...and I did.....a Motorola Droid...I must admit, I assumed the phone ugly...but damn was this thing sexy in hand...right heft, great display, speedy, HORRIBLE KEYBOARD, but Android 2.0 proved itself to be the OS Android should've been from the start...so I enjoyed my Droid for a week, rooted it, skinned it, etc...then put it back to stock sold it for 400 and used an additional 166.03 to buy the Nexus One...
and yea...Android after 1.5 years...is finally where it should be, and it can only go up. I still have my gripes with market Devs and their horrible understanding of UI and UX and even Icons....but for the most part, having been there since day 1 I am proud of where Android is heading...No where to go but up...

Sorry, couldn't resist =) I agree though, it's been what.. 2 years or so, and we have an OS that's ready to beat the crap out of the market leader, Apple.
Imagine what will it be in 2 more years. People won't even remember that Apple made phones.

Sure they will, they'll be all "Finally a well designed phone running Halo Halo.
Damn,a lot of nostalgia posts like this lately.perhaps we're all itching for the nexus 2.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
I agree.
I got a T-Mobile G1 first day it came out, then a year later, got the MyTouch3G and had it for a month and returned it. Got pissed cuz the hardware was way underpowered. (Cupcake was the latest firmware back then).
I switched to the iPhone 3GS had it for 10 months. Jailbroken, hacked to hell, and you know what? It was great to use. Apps was a pleasure to use, games were awesome. I then got bored with it (as I do with EVERYTHING), and decided to try out the Nexus One with 2.1, hoping Android OS matured A LOT from Cupcake.
Well it did a bit, but still lacking in a lot of things. Currently on my Nexus One FRF91 firmware and yeah, having to deal with bugs and what not, it's painful. And the apps, gawd, it's horrible still .
Anyways I'm sticking with it, cuz I'm too broke to buy a new phone and pray each day Google improves Android little by little.
I started with windows way back when I was parting out my Civic SI and traded some dc racing headers for the Cingular 8125. I was like "wow this is so much cooler than my razr!" ..especially when I discovered tethering. But a 13,000 dollar cell bill later and I learned my lesson with that. Anyway.. I got fed up with WM while using the Kaiser and started researching Android. I purchased the N1 a week after it came out and haven't looked back. Gave my gf the ATT Tilt 2. She hates my Nexus One since her fingernails wont work with the touch screen, lmao.

UP UP UP!
True that bro!
My love started back when I bought my G1 in Ocrober 2008.
I've known then, what I know now - just with more certainty.
I know that Google and Android™ are fukken phenomenal. Apple and Microsoft are shiet. And all my future phones, and the phones of my family, will be Android™ based (as will be our microwaves, refigerators, televisions, ebooks, etc )

I got bored with all my phones.
I've been hacking/modding my phones since I had my first HTC smartphone (Audiovox SMT5600).
The G1 & N1, are the only phones that I am NOT bored with.
There's always something NEW to tinker with: a ROM, kernel, build.prop, theme, some new amazing app that, etc.

WTF?
Got my G1 on 02/09, leaving SE scene i wasnt sure what i was getting into, but fell in love with OS and its simplicity...android user for life

What do you intend to do with your G1 after a year or two or after your contract has expired? I plan on keeping mine, and using as a just-for-fun device, or I might give it to my kids in 10 years as an antique phone that they can complain about having to use while all the other kids are using virtual headsets. I'm just curious haha
I'll probably keep using it until some freaking beast phone comes out.
Hang onto it. Backup phones can come in handy, for obvious reasons. Also, if my next handset is very securely locked out of root, I might want to have my Dream on hand for platform hacking.
I'll use mine for dyno, tuning my ecu through the phone, and controling my tv, lights, garage door, girlfriend, all through my phone.. Dreaming of course, but hey, it's called a "dream" right?
The only way I'll give up my G1 is if there is another Android phone that is super sweet looking with a hard keyboard too. Then, and only then, will I consider giving up the G1.
Oh, and no Samsung or Nokia or any other brand. Only HTC.
I've already found myself trying to keep my phone in its best physical condition so much that I am starting to not enjoy using the phone, bit of OCD on my side. Anyway, I installed a ShieldSkin around a month ago, and today I dropped my phone, and it happened to land on a pebble right on the edge of the phone in the small tiny area where the shield skin happened to not cover... so much for my 9 dollar investment, and now I got a dent in my phone that I keep staring at every single time I pick up the phone.
I'll sell mine and get some other Android phone.
Or maybe not
Currently I use Haykuro's 5.0G and I can't be happier with my device. Well, I could, if all the apps were working correctly
I will never give my G1 up as soon as HTC release another Android phone with more hardware change than and hard keyboard I will get it. But I'll keep my G1 as the first Android Phone ever!!!.
And right now I'm using Hakuro 5.1H and it's amazing stable everything works great I have fall in love with my phone more deeply.
Ps. My wife just red this post I left and she said OMG HOW [email protected]
i plan on getting a new phone before my two year expires, never had a phone that lasted more than a year so we'll see. every month it seems a new better phone comes out and unless they get rid of every phone with a hardware keyboard there is always an upgrade for me to buy.
im currently back in love with the g1 because of haykuros 5.0.1 rom
this is what keeps me on this phone right now
im hoping that by the time the huwaei phone comes out or the htc magic for the us comes out ill grab one of those just to check it out and if i dont like it ill still to the g1 until a better android phone comes out. the g1 is best of both worlds really. its got a hard keyboard and now it has a soft keyboard. people look at asthetics of a phone waaay to much now. its all about thin and sexy instead of comfortable and powerful. compared to the iphone i think the browser is the only good thing about the iphone now. eventually thatll have google as the reigning king. i think android has pretty much raped the iphone software wise and soon enough itll rape is style wise. the iphone style will never change and as u can see the android style will always be different. so even if were all using android each of our phones will be unique in maybe 3 or 4 years.
fingers are tired lol
Keeping it for sure unless another Android phone comes out with an actual keyboard.
this phone will be a collectors item lol, just wait and see
the first phone started by the open handset alliance? let alone ive got a white one and a black one, i just need a bronze one now, i have a couple very minor scratches on the bottom of my phone, ill have tmobile replace it just before i put it up and get a new phone, im liking the android phone that is slim like the iphone that i saw floating around online that should come out at the end of this year, that will probably replace my g1, but im definately keeping it, im also keeping copies of all the jf builds and the magic port builds as well, and every app that gets removed from the market im trying to get my hands on the apk for it lol, who knows right? ive seen old ass nokia phones holding there resale value because of there uniqueness, hopefully the g1 will too
with the ability ive seen in the devs and the porting of roms, i dont think this phone will become outdated as fast as my other phones have in the passed, in short, i think the hardware will become outdated MUCH sooner than the software

tmobile one was fake..and there is no android 3.0 yet
The phone does look amazing, but the biggest drawback in my opinion is the same thing that made me purchase a Hero; "Sense" (even though I love it). Maybe HTC's OS release times will improve, but I'm not so sure it'll be worth waiting so long for them to update the UI every time a major OS update is released in the future. I think it'll be vanilla Android only, for me, from here on out. I just need something with that 4.3" screen
I want it!!!!
My next device will have a physical keyboard and large screen.
HTC is coming out with phone after phone. But has no time to support the phones that are already out. This ticks me off a bit..
meh...i can wait. My Hero does just fine for me, and I can wait until October to see what comes out when I upgrade again
if it's sprint, where is their logo?
they won't sell a phone without that on it. Could be an early mockup, but still
I can wait...
Hero is the best phone I've had yet, if I can hold onto an Instinct for a yr, I can easily stay with this...
I want a full keyboard android phone. The moment sucks though
Meh. 4.3" screen is too large to carry around day-to-day.
I'll take a Hero-sized device with Snapdragon, thanks.

Maybe you should quit wearin skinny jeans then.
Im rockin this bad boy when my upgrade comes back up Oct. 11, 2010.
Ha Ha. Skinny jeans. I think im gonna rock the fanny pack again and pick this sucker up. Cant get rid of my skinny jeans.
I have been really impressed with Android so far despite the fact that the Hero is "officially" still stuck on 1.5...
I'm still primarily a WinMo user (personal phone: Sprint Touch Pro running VetVito's newest ROM), but my work got my dept a Hero as a remote-support/on-call phone, which actually kind of backfired as we were expecting it would have VPN (the Sprint Rep told us it would), so I have been testing out the custom Hero ROMs trying to find one with functional VPN (i.e. 1.6/2.0/2.1). No luck yet, but there are a couple new ROMs out in the last few days that I haven't had a chance to try yet...
But in regard to my personal phone, I am really hoping that Sprint will have a phone w/ a larger screen by the time my upgrade comes back up in Feb. I would totally go for an Android phone, but being that I have been primarily a WinMo user since ~2001 I am pretty exited about WinMo 7 coming out, too bad they won't have any phones actually released until well after I will use my next upgrade...
But I am praying that Sprint will either get the Android 2.1 update for the Hero or another Android phone that comes with 2.1 by the time I upgrade, I really like the Hero but I am going to go with the most current OS I can...
And Snapdragon + a bigger screen would rock!
I agree...I don't want a phone bigger in size than my Hero, but I would like a full screen from top to bottom with smaller buttons, the buttons on the bottom and that stupid trackball could go and I'd be even happier...
I saw a Droid on the train I take home and there is no way I could carry that thing around all day.

Let's be real for a minute... I want 2.1 as bad as anyone, and it's really frustrating not to have it since there have been leaked roms floating around for a couple months... but riddle me this:
Other than the Droid and Nexus 1, which phones have received a 2.x update?
HTC isn't any further behind the 8 ball than anyone else in this regard.

No phones from anyone anywhere have received a 2.x update. Period.
It looks like the Hero will actually end up being among the first, if not the first, to receive it.
No love for the trackball??? I personally love it...living in Denver I don't want to have to pull my gloves off to look at the widgets. I wouldn't mind an optical 'trackball'.
And for the size, I'm not sure yet if it's to big. I would love to check it out once it's out and see if it's pocketable and sized right for day to day use. My guess is that 4.3" is probably about as big as you'd ever want to go before it simply becomes a tablet...
Dunno if anyone else feels this way too but I can't help feeling that only N1 owners should get the latest and greatest updates since we're the ones carrying the flagship device torch...
It's like buying a Toyota Prius for $23,000 and then Toyota coming out with a hybrid kit for any car for free which seems to cheapen the N1 experience...

Kinda goes against the whole idea of open source.
Onwards and upwards I say, Android moves forward at a fast pace because it can, not because it has to.
Yes, it's very selfish.
What are you, 12 years old?

Hey it's not Google's fault.
It's the lazy ass manufacturers who aren't willing to put in the work to upgrade.
The source code for 2.1 has been on the web for months now. Absolutely no one to blame but the lazy ass manufacturers.
You shouldn't be allowed to touch the android market...most of the apps there the author wrote with a G1 (1.6) or Droid (2.0) in mind...Those devices your being selfish about getting a upgrade on are the ones that helped give you 30,000 apps...Devs aren't flocking to the android market because of the horrible 20,000 first week sales of the N1
This makes no sense. What happens when a new phone comes out, all the n1 owners should feel obliged to wait for updates then?
stuff Eclair, I want Froyo! and Gingerbread!
Oh comon guys!
N1 owners are way more important than any random Hero, G1, or Droid customers.
We are the ones that carry Google's flagship device and should be treated accordingly... compared to the other random devices that just have android on it and aren't really Google devices.
I love how the phone is being compared to a Toyota Prius. Good analogy.
Even if all the other android devices get 2.1, its not as if they will all be able to utilize everything unless they have a 1GHz processor - though, while new Android phones are coming out with that constantly, you will have to just deal with everything that is going on in the Android world..
I also believe this thread is kinda weird, honestly I don't see why you would care at all what other Android devices have. You cannot stop progression.
I am perfectly OK with all android devices being upgraded to 2.1 BUT Right after nexus one has been upgraded to android 3.0.
With less Android 2.1 owners, our version of Android will get less attention from devs
We still have top hardware.
Also, the more standardised android is, the more attractive it will be to developers. The more people on 2.1 the better it is for all of us.
Most of the phones will probably be updated to a certain point, but they will first get the updates a long time after we have got it i think, the hardware manufactures and carriers, have to make a profit on their phones, and therefore they cant afford to keep updating them.
As google are responsible for our updates we are in a bit better situation i think, as i dont think that google intention with the nexus one was to make a **** load of money, they wants to show what android is capable of, and i think that the nexus one is the only phone you will get that "real android experince" with.
I choosed the nexus one because of this, so that i could have the newest version of android and not be stuck on 1.5 or something like that.
nevermind....LoL

hardware evolves. Even if the G1 gets Android 2.1, it doesn't have the processing power for Live Wallpapers, Google Earth, etc.
Device manufacturers don't lose out on sales by continuing to support existing devices. If that were the case, you'd never see updated drivers for your pc's graphics card, etc.. Device manufacturers know that people will prefer to buy devices that they believe will get updates.
This is going to sound harsh, but I think all phones (hardware wise) should be left behind, and the N1 should be made the lowest spec. This would make it easier for programmers and devs to make more powerful apps or games, so they don't have to cut back just so a G1 can play it (so the N1 owners miss out)
This would mean Android would Rival the Windows Phone 7 Series (anyone else think that's a stupid name?)
The problem is, Google make money from the advertisements, so they don't really care, they just want to win to make money, so diversification is better for them.
I've watched countless videos on Youtube and researched them both on google, but I just can't seem to come to a decision on which is better.
The Vibrant has native android which runs smooth AND records videos in 720p which is a really nice bonus, but the HD2 just has this massive screen which just looks like it kicks *** BUT can also run Android (with some bugs apparently). When it comes to battery life, which is better? My day is filled with heavy texting and the occasional web browsing but not really emails or networking since I hate Facebook and all that.
Any help here?
I've had both and Vibrant hands down. Not even a contest honestly. The only thing the HD2 has over the Vibrant is a little larger screen and even then the Vibrant is a better screen.
Here you go.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=745201&highlight=Vibrant+hd2
we're getting too many of the threads....
if you look at them side by side and open the same apps etc, you will see that the hd2 is garbage.
Vibrant indeed, was at the T-Mo store and mom was considering it for some bizarre reason, the T-Mo rep told her to not consider it, on top of all the obvious reasons posted in many threads, the device itself seems to be very buggy and the rep said most people have problems with the device
If you can afford a Lexus why buy a Hyuandai that looks like one? Go with the vibrant, my hd2 had freezing issues, slow browser and the app store reminded me of my palm treo 650, non existant!
I perfer the screen size and ergonomics of the vibrant, on a hardware note, and touch sensitive buttons means no dirt getting into the phone.
Did I miss anything?
Oh night mode, swype, and hummingbird ftw!
Sent from the best phone from TMO... Vibrant
The only thing going for it would be the price, depending on how disgusted the person is with the HD2 you can get one mint in the low $200's
Thanks guys, I realize this is an overdone topic but I really appreicate the responses.
I think I'm set on the vibrant since it has way better features with the exception of flash and a bigger screen.
I really appreciate it guys, but just one more thing, there IS a way to unlock this phone to get free apps and such right? >_>

If your talking about getting paid apps for free then you're not going to get any help here. Its called warez and very frowned upon here. Besides most apps in the market are free or have a lite version. And the paid ones only cost a few dollars so its not even worth it to pirate them.

Getting apps for free really does this community a dis-service. app developers are less likely to produce the higher end games and support for a system that is flawed, at least for now. Soon we will see emailed auth. Codes for every paid app., but will hopefully see those apps that are truly worth paying for.
Vibe the XDApp
Haven't used the HD2 but I'm in love with my Vibrant and it seems like a has quite a bigger fan base going.
Sent from my awesome Vibrant using XDA App
I don't mind paying for applications, but paying for an app that let's you use nice themes with different icons (on the G1 anyways) always seemed downright stupid to me. You're right though, it doesn't justify stealing them in the first place because some devs do deserve the money.
I had HD2 and i wasnt happy with it. It crashed the second day and apps were simply limited and useless. The OS wasnt bad but it wasnt good either. After i installed android i was more pleased but not for long when it kept crashing (bcs obviously is not perfect yet) Now that i have Vibrant i fell in love from out of the box. Everything is neat (especially when froyo 2.2 comes out) and so far havent frozen once. Battery never seemed like a problem to me, and i DO text a lot. Usually keep brightness down since the screen is beautiful as it is and less light reflect. Every phone have its own problems and HD2 have too many.
I have both..I like the led flash and larger screen of the hd2 but the color and pop of the vibrant is much better...I like my Vibrant alot more.....

Sent from my Samsung Vibrant using XDA App
I now have only 2 days to return my Vibrant and go back to the HD2.<thinking> .........
Don't think it's going to happen!..Don't get me wrong, I really liked my
HD2 when I got it...got two, one for me and one for her.
She's happy with it coming from a Blackberry 8300 but, I've had
Windows mobile before and even with the slick Sense its like the
other guy said...Treo 650....5.0 touched up to 6.5!
I paid $500 each for those phones...Think I can get at least
half of what I paid? Man, I hope so.

Doubt it man, the hd2's lost value quicker than a...I actually don't have an analogy to go with that. Anyways they're pretty dirt cheap on craigslist but good luck selling them nonetheless. And in regards to this thread's topic, I suggest getting the vibrant and buying a cheap led keychain if flash is really important to you. Although I don't suggest trying to zoom in on your photos in android's default gallery app. Just trust me, it's not pretty.
And do try to search the forum next time you have a question. It's kind of getting annoying seeing these identical threads popping up every time I come to xda.

i also have both.
you can now run android on the hd2 on top of the native windows OS via dual-boot. so far most of the builds are close to being 100 pct stable. right now, i'm running froyo with htc sense on my hd2 and getting respectable quadrant scores up to 1500. these builds also come rooted and with overclocked kernels. just some thing for you to think about if you're thinking about getting an hd2. i primarily use my hd2 for work and my vibrant as my daily driver.
My beloved HTC Nexus One.

He was with me in the worst of times (Sony x10), and the best of times (HTC sensation, Samsung Galaxy S2).
He helped me not to lose my way (GPS), and always had something funny to say! (Youtube, twitter, joke of the day via google)
He always disliked fellow OS's that thought they had something he didn't (apple, blackberry, and most of all.....windows)
But he was NEVER a hater.....
He was the original TRAIL BLAZER, as we can all attest to his sense of voyeurism, and his want; no NEED, to be the pioneer and game changer in the washed out industry of cellular.
How can we forget his track ball that notified us who was contacting us? Or was that his way of saying.......... "Don't you forget about me." (Simple minds)
In my mind he will always be number 1. And his good friends CM7, MIUI have and will always have fond things to say about him.
I remember Steve Kondik saying once "Do you remember that one time he forgot to flash the gapps??? How embarrassing, HAHAHAHA!" It wasn't funny back then, but as time went on, the humour of the situation began to shine thru! I saw my N1 crack a smile......
He went thru numerous surgeries, swap-outs, re-boots, and firmware upgrades. And lived to tell another story.
He loved desert. Ones worth mentioning were eclair, frozen yogurt, and gingerbread. A funny thing about N1; he was always the first to the table with spoon in hand.
As we speak he is being sold for parts on Craigslist. However he was always greater than the sum of his parts.
Thank you N1!

Wonderfull.... What made you sell your n1 for parts? It was certainly more usefull in one piece....
By The Way, What phone is that in the upper left corner? Some sort of Samsung?
Yea the phone in the top corner of the pic is a Samsung galaxy note!
I was trying to fix the power button issue and accidentally crunched part of the main board
UPDATE: I've upgraded to the Galaxy Nexus...... Once a nexus fan, always a nexus fan!
Cheers guys!
How do you like it so far, coming from N1 to the GN, Ive been debating on it for a while now. Mines not dead yet got Medroid ICS running currently, but in the future when the prices drop and there are a few used ones running around, Is it a good phone worth getting. Basically what i'm asking is from your personal preferences a list of pros and cons about it.
R.I.P
A sad day indeed!

One of the issues with the n1 was the lack of internal memory. That ALWAYS drove me bananas. That ASIDE, it still went toe-to-toe with the heavy weights out there! My thoughts are because it was meant to be a developers phone. If you were to look at the specs of the n1 against other phones in its prime time, you would think that it would not compare. Build quality was awesome, and with android it was a match made in heaven (thanks Cyanogenmod) .
I thought a bit about what phone to get next. Creeping thru XDA helped my decision on the gnex as well as the nexus one. Both devices had/have HUGE Developer support (see cyanogenmod, aokp , miui, fransisco Franco just to name a few......)
This was my deciding factor in choosing the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. As well as ICS outta the box with hardware acceleration.
Did I forget anything, lol?!

It was a good poem, but can't really agree to it being a sad day. I don't know, I guess I don't wholeheartedly attach to any phone I buy. Sure, it's a great phone and I don't know what I would do without it, but I wouldn't mind switching it for a better one any day of the week. Though, if my only alternative was an iPhone 4S, I'd stick with the Nexus.
Regarding the internal memory. That doesn't bother me much with the use of an A2SD script. But the seemingly unsolvable issue with not being able to download big market apps is one thing that really drives me crazy.

Yea I used apps2sd as well. The bigger files drove me krazy too! I found myself cleaning cache constantly......
Uninstalling apps and then installing new apps had been my major pastime off late on my nexus.. Just to free up memory.. Clearing cache works but only sometimes...
