For those who live in an area with HSPA+, I was wondering if it would show an H for HSPA+ (like e for edge, E for EDGE, 3G for well...,) on the stock ROM. Because I live in Los Angeles and it looks like T-Mobile is finally rolling out HSPA+ out here in their latest press release and would like to know what connection my phone is using. (Current ROM/Radio in my sig.)
I think you would have to load a custom rom or cab file for that. I still use the stock rom as well and only see 3g here in Tampa. Try doing a search.
i have a question live in nj and i know that hspa is in ny. i just did a speed test at speakeasy.net/speedtest and i got 3.29mbps download and 1.14 mbps upload. sorry i am a noob when it comes to this is this any good. not to mention tmo hasnt announced hspa in nj
i am also interested in knowing if angone does get an h cuz i only see 3g

Im in Tampa, one of the markets just officially announced as having HSPA+. HSPA+ was actually turned on here in Tampa last week. I had a Tmobile sales rep visit the company I work for yesterday and he confirmed it was turned on last Wed, I noticed the speed bump last Thur
However the indicator still shows 3g
I love how fast I can upload full 5mpix images to twitpic now, used to have to sit and twiddle my thumbs for about a minute or two. They seem to upload in about 30 seconds now. That was how I noticed the speed upgrade last Thur, I was literally like WTF an image has never uploaded that quick.

The stock tmo ROM won't display an "H"...you'll have to install one of the many available custom taskbar icon sets for it to show that. However, I have yet to see any confirmation that having the "H" displayed on your taskbar means anything other than just the fact your connection (i.e. your closest tower) is capable of HSPA7.2 or better...regardless of whether it has the backhaul connection to support it or not.
And since my first Energy rom 2 1/2 months ago it's switched between 3G and H all the time, way before HSPA+. Now speed is the only gauge to know if I have HSPA+ or just HSPA.
I'm currently just out of HSPA+ range north of Seattle... 2 miles south I get 5.7mbps speedtests, at home still suffer with 900kbps even with H and 4 bars showing.

I am going to guess that the ROMs that differentiate between 3G and H are probably showing 3G for UMTS and H for HSPA/HSPA+
so my hspa speeds are all over the place one Minute they are below 500kb/s the next they are over 2000kbs .. odd i say

Mine seem pretty consistently in the 2mbit download 1mbit upload, but ive seen spikes as high as 5mbit for download. probably all depends on how good the signal is in your area and the load on the cell tower that you are on.
That's what I was figuring sirphunkee (outside of just downloading a icon set to show H). Thanks all for your answers guys.
so im using a HD2, with the energy rom and tmo just announced that they are rolling out hspa+ in my city (honolulu) so i figured id do a speed test now just to see the difference when they "flip the switches" on 7/21 (my birthday)
so i pull up dsl reports and run the Iphone (bleh)/smartphone speed test choose 3g and........ 126kbps well maybe its a fluke i rerun it and 51kbps WTF!?!?!?!!?!
so i remember mobilespeedtest.com and i try there and..... 134kbps.....starting to get annoyed and when i compare with other tmo subscribers the average is 580~
so my question is is there something i can do to "fix" my speeds? ive got full signal im always showing "H" oh and im using opera 10.0
In Lexington, Ky I get about 400 kbps. In Cincinnati, like 800-900. I just think Tmob's network is really crappy.
hahaha well your crappy is still 4 times faster than me
just odd its SO slow here where hspa+ is going live in a week
before TMO threw the HSPA+ switch here in Tampa, i regularly saw 600-800kbps download speeds. Now with HSPA+ it seems to average about 3mbps-4mbps and Ive seen it reach as high as 5.5mbps.
I just got through with a road trip from Tampa to northern Mississippi where i lost the HSPA+ coverage after leaving Tampa, i saw around a 1mbps in outskirt areas north of Tampa that doesn't have HSPA+ yet, and once we hit the interstate it was GPRS coverage for a majority of the trip with some EDGE coverage here and there. God i forgot how slow GPRS was!
oh i also forgot to mention im using the stock radio rom.....maybe a different radio would improve data speeds?

WTF?!?!!?!?! im in town near HCC, care to provide details as far as rom? radio? variances in different places?
My birthday's on the 21st as well, you know what this calls for....SURPRISE BIRTHDAY PARTIES!!!!
soooo apparently its just my apartment that sucks, left the house fro work today and didnt get 50 yards and my speeds jump up to 400~
as i keep walking outdoors my speeds go as high as 1.4 and never went below 400. so when i get to work i figure my speeds will go down as im indoors, wrong i kept getting speeds around 500 tho i didnt see the huge jumps that i did outdoors
We're on the list to have HSPA+ flipped on here in Austin next week, but I'm already starting to see the signs...I can now hit 3-5MB downstream just about anywhere in town.
3mbps-4mbps here in ATL
we are getting an average of about 3mbps-4mbps with HSPA+ in Atlanta, GA
Funny thing when I tether I get 12-15 Mbps. only when I tether tho even if its another phone

i was talking to a tmobile rep today, trying to figure out why my tmobile speeds were kinda crappy. turns out, its cause los angeles doesnt have "4G". i doubt it even has hspa+. they said:
^Cheryl W: You have 3G on the device and it is boosted by HSPA+, which your device can stand up to 5.76 M
^Cheryl W: We have four different Categories for the data speed, which are 2G EDGE, 3G (HSPA 3.6 Mbps), 3G (HSPA 7.2 Mbps), 4G (HSPA+ 21Mbps).
^Cheryl W: You fall under 3G (HSPA 3.6 Mbps).
^Cheryl W: We have them in our systems, your area should have 4G in the area by the end of the year, Jonathan, the release say the end of 2010 for Los Angeles.
Jonathan C: hmm
Jonathan C: well at least i wont have to wait long
^Cheryl W: Yes, not at all.
Jonathan C: so just to be clear, los angeles doesnt have HSPA+?
Jonathan C: and im not talking about HSPA, i specifically mean HSPA+
Jonathan C: which in your decription of the speeds, was the only one you decribed as 4G
Jonathan C: the other 2 you said were 3G and not +
^Cheryl W: Correct, you have HSPA not HSPA+.
^Cheryl W: Yes, correct.
dont think she knows what shes talking about cause right there she clearly says "HSPA" then later on describes all 3 of those last speeds as "HSPA+". anyway if this is true it would explain why from what i have seen nobody in LA seems to get "4G" speeds. were all still stuck with 3G. the H means nothing. though i dont even think i have that cause my speeds seem about the same as when i had my G1.
she says los angeles will get HSPA+ by the end of 2010. least we dont have to wait long
Well.... I live in the West Covina, Glendora, Chino, Pomona area and I have 'H' all the time on my G2.
When I went to Disneyland 2 weeks ago I also had 'H'.
I was in Burbank last week and had 'H' also....
Have you done a Speed Test? Because when I download Market Apps, They're done in an instant!
H doesnt mean HSPA+. its probably just HSDPA. ive done speed tests and i could never get anywhere near 4-6mb/s. thats why i spoke to the rep. what your using is probably just a faster version of 3G. tho in reality its all still 3G, but its not all HSPA+
has anyone gotten HSPA+ speeds in there speedtests in los angeles?
I'm pretty sure she is correct in that we don't have it yet in LA. I work pretty close to downtown and when I run a speed test with my g2 and n1 side by side the speeds are nearly identical even with full bars. I'm not seeing the 8mbs down other are seeing. I'm usually in the 1-3 range

getting 3-4 out here near westwood
I got 7.6Mbps in Torrance (around Lomita and Hawthorne area). That's the highest speed Ive seen so far even compared to the ones I got all over Orange County.
Remember 4G, is not 4G. Highest speeds we'll probably ever see on a G2 is around 10-11.
UPDATE-11/09
So I had a fun time with 611, made my way up the chain to discover that the G2 is technically not capable of HSPA+ speeds right now...
HTC and T-Mobile are apparently working really hard on another OTA that should be coming out next month and this OTA will fix the issue.
From what was explained to me, it's a well known issue they aren't ignoring. So I wasn't lying when I posted about there being 2 OTA's for one individual device.
If you don't believe me, call 611 for yourself and spend 5 HOURS explaining the same thing 18 times...
This all started cause I held a Mytouch 4G and it was connected to HSPA+ but the G2 in the other hand was not.
Valid reason, no?

umm i dont know about that..
anyway most of your guys' speeds are all just hspa. seems like hspa 7.2. hspa+ would go well above 7. also i think it would say UTMS. and btw i dont think torrance is part of los angeles lol
I work in Los Angeles and have full bars with the "H" showing all the time. I go and do the speed test and the highest download spped I get is 1.6. Is it that I'm just in a bad area? I see alot of people here getting alot better speeds than me. I just wanted to know if you have to enable the HDSPA+ 4G or does it automatically locate this network depending where you are. I only ask this becasue I see apps that you can choose to be on 2G,3G,4g speeds. Thanks!
I am in San Diego and although in a 4G area I get most of the time 0.8-1.8 download speed. In some spotty areas I get up to 2.5 down. Last weekend I was in Anaheim in Disneyland and although I was on H (four bars) i got 0.2 down...speed depends on reception, area, how many people use it in that area.
the H is 4G but its kinda iffy cus everywhere i used to get a 3G i just get an H now with 3G speeds... a lot of people including myself have said they hardly ever see the G anymore... may just be to get people to think their always on 4G so buying a 4G phone was worth the money... but to the actual speed thing if your in LA you should be getting way faster speeds... towards ontario/riverside gets really ****ty though
I'm not positive that California has fully launched HSPA+. Notice the + at the end, this is what gives you 4G speeds. It should be fully launched in California (major cities) by then end of December.
Also, concerning the H. Your data icon will switch to H if you are on HSPA or HSPA+. This is a part of the Sense UI. ANY sense phone or phone using a sense UI will have this funciton. So that being said, if you see the H for data, it could be fast 3G speeds or 4G. I typically get anywhere from 3.5-7Mbs through out Phoenix which is a fully 4G launched network.
Thanks for the info fellas! Its good to know by the end of the year, our system will be alot faster. To tell you the truth, I am already satisfied with speeds right now.
I literally just started using my hd2 as my main phone and backed up all my crap, etc...then I stuck in my sim card, which was activated on my g2, and now I believe I'm getting hspa+ speeds on my hd2 which we all know is not hspa+ compatible...now is this something about the rom i have? or is this something weird?
sorry im new with the hd2 as i just sold my g2
The HD2 is hspa+ capable...It will not show you with an icon if you are on it...its only G, E, or 3G. Now if you boot android...it will show the H. I have talked to multiple tmobile reps in-store and on the phone.
G2 = 14.4 Mbps HPSA+
HD2 = 7.2 Mbps HSPA+
oh i see kool thanks!
