Hi, I'm kinda new to this stuff, but I really want to upgrade my phone because I find that the stock ROM I got with the phone just isn't good enough.
I've been trying to load a new ROM for a couple of days now, but I just can't seem to finish the process.
My Phone:
HTC Magic
Android 1.5
running recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.6.2H.img
32A
Attempting to install CyanogenMod 5.0.8
Now, here are the steps I've performed:
1. Flashed recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.6.2H.img using flashrec.apk
2. Booted phone in recovery mode
3. Did nandroid backup
4. wiped data, wiped cache, wiped dalvik-cache
5. loaded ROM from sdcard update-cm-5.0.8-DS-signed.zip
When that finished installing on my phone successfully, I rebooted my phone, and then my phone just gets stuck on the "htc magic" logo.
I've performed suggested actions, such as wiping again and then loading the ROM again, tried loading different ROMs, but always get the same problem. I even tried using the clockwork recovery image instead of the sapphire v1.6.2.
What could possibly be the cause? How can I fix it? Am I just a massive noob and using the wrong ROMs?
It's getting really annoying now, I'm almost ready to give up and just factory reset back to stock rom *sigh*
Cyanogen Mod is for 32B devices. Go to the download page, you'll find the kernel for 32A in a zip. I believe all you need to do is flash it from recovery and it should boot
If that doesn't work, repeat your steps then flash (wipe, flash CM, flash kernel).

Thanks for the quick reply!
errm...what's a kernel? lol (sorry for being such a noob)
And which download page should I find the kernel for 32A in a zip?

did you try reading the cyano-wiki? or the original post in the cm thread?
really, if you didnt, take some time and read that stuff, even if some of it makes no sense, just read through it, then take a 5 minute break, and look through it again, all the info you need is there
if you did, read it again, cause i needed to read through it several times to get it, the instructions often assume we know stuff we dont know
otherwise, i would start over fresh, i mean from ground up, may be quicker than 1) trying to figure out whats wrong, and 2)trying to figure out how to fix whats wrong

Actually, thanks for this tip. I flashed the kernel for 32A and after I did that the ROM worked!

I have flashed the new CyanogenMod and the Cyanogen Recovery 1.4 and when I wipe everything and flash, it'll load up and I can use the phone 100% perfectly, but once I reboot my phone, or turn it off and on, it never goes past the green boot screen. Anyone have any solutions/reasons why it does that? It's with every single Cyanogen mod too, i've tried several of them.
Probably because you have a lot of apps?
If not, reflash it.

what do you actually flash and what is the actual process, you shouldnt have any issues after it boots up the first time, wipe everything and make an exterior partition meaning get rid of your cyanogen recovery 1.4 and get amon ra's latest... look in the dev section and read up on cyan's page on how to flash the rom

Thanks for help man, right now I'm running dwang's rom 100% perfect w/ no issues at all. it can reboot and everything just fine. I'm just a little worried on going back and trying to flash cyanogens.
When I installed it, I first did the root process, downloading the .apk file and going through all that part smooth, then I downloaded and flashed the Cyanogen Recovery 1.4, and from there I downloaded the two files (DRC83_base and the latest cyan's rom, i forgot the version #) and applied update from SD, first doing DRC83 and right after doing the rom itself, without rebooting the phone. It loads up A-OK and I can installl the apps and go about my business, but once I need to restart my phone, it just never turns back on. I'm puzzled completely...I even did the whole unroot and reroot thing and STILL i'm not having any luck.
K I got confused in there some where did you flash a cyan rom at all in there I read that you flashed the drc83 zip file but sounds like you just flashed that and booted the phone lol... never tried that but.... any way it seems like you are doing everything correct onlything I could suggest is make sure you have the correct htc base image, and make sure you wipe and repair everything!!!!! and also try a differant download of cyanogen as you might have gotten a bad one or something I have never had any issues with a cyanogen rom except maybe a FC back on 4.0xx or something

Hey MT4G guru's i need your assistance.
1st off im an Evo user..rooted and all so im not to shabby at doing this. 2nd I rooted her phone using visionary.
So on to the problem. I tried to flash her a theme. I nandrioded (backup) first as usual. The theme which ended up being a full ROM--> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=929101
It flashed successfully but when i rebooted it gets stuck at the white MT4G screen and stays there forever.
**I can still get into the bootloader & recovery.**
Tried to restore...NO LUCK. It restores, I reboot then the Same white screen.
Tried to factory reset, dalvik & cache wipe..... NO LUCK
Tried Update.zip Nothing!!!
Even tried pd15img in the bootloader. NOTHING!! It doesnt even recognize it!!
Guys i even looked into odin which i found out it isnt needed on phones with recovery.
Hate to sound like a noob but Help!!!!
...A fixed phone will result in 30,000 "thanks" button presses.....cause shes pissed to say the least....
Edit: Ok i believe i found the problem. I had clockwork 2.5.1.2 instead of 3 on her phone. Ok so now that i found the problem how do i fix it??
go to this link http://goo.gl/K0xTy and follow the instructions. you are flashing a cm7 rom and for this phone requires a different recovery. Then flash your rom
Flash cm6 first it will boot with 2.5
twiztid
If you made a nandroid backup, which you always should do before flashing a new rom, you can restore it using clockwork 2.5.1.2. If you don't have a backup you can do two things. You can use fastboot to flash clockwork recovery v3.0.0.5 to the phone then reboot into recovery and successfully flash CM7. If you don't know how to use fastboot then you can use the existing recovery to flash a froyo based rom on the phone. Either iced glacier or CM6 will flash ok. Perform a full wipe before you flash. Once you have a froyo rom working you can follow TrueBlue_Drew's thread about getting clockwork 3 on the phone without issue. I'm on my phone so I can't provide the link but it is in the mt4g development section. It is in a sticky called Resource Bible. In the OP, scroll until you see the header Recoveries and choose the link called Easiest way to install clockwork 3.0.0.5 by TrueBlue_Drew. Follow his instructions and you'll be able to switch between clockwork versions with no hassle. Of course, once you have clockwork 3 working you can flash CM7.
EDIT: Drew replied before I finished writing so follow his link once you are able to boot successfully.

hello everyone,
few days ago i pruchased a new kingston 16g card, and follow the resource bible tried to restore my cell back to stock. i format the sdcard, insert to the slot, and then follow the steps "stock nandroid retore" http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=845756
everything worked fine, i am sure it was completed, but at the very last step to reboot my phone, it stuck at "mytouch 4g" boot screen, cant reboot into the system, bricked i think? so i tried another thread by using PD15IMG, finally i can back to normal and a clean stock status.
(my phone is s-off, permrooted, oc1.5g)now my question is, why can't i success the nandroid restore? did i do anything wrong or do i need some more roms/files/images on my new sdcard? after this i even tried to backup my own nandroid backups and then run restore via rom manager, but i still got the same results, can't completed nandroid restore, always stuck at mytouch 4g boot screen
sorry for my really bad English, hope u guys can understand me... i just need an answer/method/guide that i can try some more new roms/oc kernels in the future without worry bricking my phone. dont really wnat to go over and over again the PD15IMG, i got scared though...
Thank you for ur help!
You probably flashed recovery version 3.0.0.5 in which you cannot restore your stock ROM with. If you don't have another ROM, you should install a gingerbread ROM such as CM7 and then flash the 3.0.0.6 recovery available in the development thread. Don't worry, your phone is not bricked. If you can turn it on and get into recovery or hboot, it can always be fixed.
I think your problem is that you had the wrong recovery. Flash Drew's 3.0.0.6 zip file to get that recovery and then pick 3.0.0.5 in more recoveries in Rom Manager. Also do your nandroids and restore in Recovery. I never go thru rom manager, it just works better that way for me.
really thank you both for the quick response
i just followed this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944681 ,looks like i completed all the steps, but when i reboot and open rom manger, it still shows current/latest recovery:clockworkmod 3.0.0.5, so idk whether i did it right or not?
anyways, later on i might try either my won nandroid backup/recovery or the stockclean recovery again, then we will know the results...
i really appreciate for ur help!
Yes, when you open up all recoveries in Rom Manager it will still show as 3.0.0.5. If you followed the steps correctly when you flash that one and open up recovery, it will actually be 3.0.0.6 which will show at the top. This version allows you to switch between froyo (2.x) and gingerbread (3.x) based ROMs.

In clckworkmod it will always show 3.0.0.5. Flash the 3.0.0.5 in more recoveries. Then when you go in recovery it will read 3.0.0.6 sounds confusing but its not once you got it. Happy flashing!

SMART! read alot, the community is here to help.
hi folks,
I got a htc magic a while ago, it had the original 1.6 Android.
I wanted to try a custom rom, so I found the website theUnlockr and followed some instructions there.
I managed to do the gold card method and get a hero rom on my phone.
Ok.
I didn't know that hero was actually based on 1.5 -> fail.
So I had some time yesterday and tried to first go back to 1.6, without all that htc sense crap.
I found this website. Awesome!
Doing this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Sapphire_Hacking
it all went well until I had to load the custom recovery rom, which didn't work.
But at that moment I realized that I still had the custom rom on the phone from my previous activities.
Next thing:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=576768
I jsut got myself the update.zip from the htc website linked there and applied it.
It worked like a charm. I have the old 1.6 which runs smoothly.
However, it wasn't as good as before anymore (some apps don't work on 1.6 anymore, like google goggles and kindle app) -> fail again.
So I wanted to get a newer version of android running.
Back to the wiki tutorial!
This time, I realized that I had a standard recovery back as well.
"Android system recovery"
reading at the bottom of the screen:
"E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command"
Is this bad? I have no clue.
It also gives me the option to aply an update.zip, do I need the custom recovery at all?
I made a backup with Nandroid recovery, which I couldn't use then.
I cannot put a custom recovery on the phone. (fastboot boot recovery.img)
When I try to, adb tells me:
"cannot load recovery.img"
fail.
Where recovery.img is the renamed recovery file from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530492
I used:
recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.7.0G.img
because I have a 32B phone.
What the heck is going on? Why does it refuse to load the recovery?
I didn't find any thread regarding this problem. =(
fyi fastboot:
Sapphire Pvt 32B Eng S-Off H
HBoot 1.33.2005 (Sapp10000)
CPLD 10
Radio 2.22.19.261
the fastboot information states "H" so I'm not sure if I chose the correct recovery img.
tl;dr
What causes the problem that "fastboot boot recovery.img" fails to load the recovery file?
Do I need a custom recovery?
With the above device specifications, am I correctly choosing "recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.7.0G.img"?
Did I fail at anything else?
Thanks guys.

If both of you are on stock, I. recommend rooting using Universal Androot, then installing Rom Manager to flash a custom recovery.
EDIT: To get Androot, Google it on your phone, and then download and install it. Rom Manager is available in the market.
Keep me posted!
Sent from my Sapphire/dream using XDA App
thanks, I got the Rom manager, which tells me that I do not have root.
That's confusing. How did I lose root? I thought I had root through the gold card method.
Edit:
I went for androot and it worked like a charm.
When I start rom manager it doesn't complain about the missing root.
So that's done.
However, when I try to load a custom recovery with rom manager, it tells me that an error occured.
Roughly translated:
"while performing a privileged command an error occured"
It's also strange that it sometimes asks me for my device type (either "magic" or "ION") and sometimes just does nothing.
I'm still stuck with the inability to get the recovery image on the phone =(
Edit²: I tried the "fix permissions" thing but it fails with the same error
At this point you should probably try to flash the alternate recovery at the bottom of Rom Manager(AmonRa).
Sent from my Sapphire/dream using XDA App
thanks a lot!
the problem was that I did not install the superuser.
This way, the rom manager failed.
So I got CM 6.1 which works great.
However, there are no Google apps. (all I need is the market really)
So I went for the CM wiki: (cannot post links so I inserted a space)
wiki. cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Latest_Version/Google_Apps
I have a magic, so I took the "tiny" version for "CyanogenMod 6".
Now I have all the google apps, but NO market!?
When I visit the market website (via pc) my phone does not show up.
How do I get the market back?
Do you still have Rom Manager? If you do, you can flash CM with GAPPS through it.

I have it still installed, but it crashes when I try to view the available roms.
It asks me to update it before it dies. (I don't knwo how to do that without the market)
And again: I did install the google apps for CM (see link) so I'm confused as to why there was no market included.
Itried downloading the market as a separate apk file but it crashed on whatever I did with it after opening it.
Can you reflash the CM rom(without using Rom Manager)? If you can, then we can download RM again, update it, then reflash CM again, with GAPPS. I know this is tedious, but it has the highest chance of working.
Sent from my Sapphire/dream using XDA App
Thought of another way to get the market. Do you have a file manager on your phone as of right now? If you do, then I can attach the vending.apk(market) from my phone. If you don't, I can probably find an apk for a free file manager as well.
EDIT: It probably crashed because it installed in the wrong place. Look here: http://www.google.com/m/url?client=ms-android-hms-tmobile-us&ei=9gcaTojwO-KkiAKKmZ6EAw&gl=us&hl=en&q=http://www.pocketmagic.net/?p%3D1447&source=android-browser-type&ved=0CD4QFjAH&usg=AFQjCNENw-_9QWgtW_j3UgDiv14Fa-PCyA

reflashing the Rom seems to be the way to go.
I was curious how some apps for this newer android version would perform, so I installed the flashplayer apk.
Surprisingly, after rebooting, the system was ****ed up and stayed in a loop in the CM boot animation.
So I have to redo the system anyway.
The Rom manager is not too great for me, because I have no wifi here.
CM was kinda cool. I think to bypass the whole gapps problem, I could simply get the standard android 2.2 froyo Rom?
But there are only custom ROMs as it seems. what do you recommend?
Edit: crap. when I flash the CM Rom again, the boot keeps looping =(
You could try out GingerYoshi. Its gingerbread, so it shouldn't have compatibility issues with flash player. Just make sure you have the right radio.

I don't want flash.
I know it won't run fast on a magic. I mean 512Mhz, I don't expect anything else.
I just wanted to know how bad it actually would be.
Games are generally nothing I want on my phone. (which is one reason why I got myself this old phone)
So, that aside, how do I get rid of the boot loop?
Will this be fixed when I flash a different ROM?
Actually, GingerYoshi is extremely fast, as you can overclock, turn on JIT, and modify compcache settings right from the options. I think the bootloop should fix itself if you flash back to stock.
Sent from my Sapphire/dream using XDA App
Sorry for the delay, I didn't have time...
I tried to flash the old original Google ION 1.6 that I had before.
(putting the zip on the SD, booting recovery (clockwork), installing the zip from there)
This doesn't work. An assertion fails:
The assertions checks if either "ro.product.device" or "ro.build.product" are equal to "saphire".
This happens even if I disable the assertions. =(
I think the phone got set to be "ION" after I installed this Rom the first time.
How do I fix this?
UPADATE:
I got back to ra recovery.
I could flash the rom for 1.6
However, there's still the bootloop.
How do I get rid of the loop?
Ok, at this point, I think we should go back to stock and then reroot. Under the mytouch development board, there should be a thread for the officials RUUs. Go there and flash the correct rom to get back to stock.

Oh sorry. I didn't mention it: this 1.6 is an official rom.
It is the standard google android without any custom things.
That's why I was a little scared when even that got stuck in the boot loop.
However, I booted to recovery again and from there, rebooted the system.
And it worked! (for whatever reason)
The system was not working perfectly.
There's this bar where you can quickly turn wifi, bluetooth, etc. on and off and this didn't work.
I rebooted again now and the flaws are gone.
I'm back on 1.6 running smoothly now.
I had a look at the thread with the official stuff.
I have the 1.6 from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=576768
I found via a link from the wiki page for the magic (as I said earlier).
It is something "official".
I'm a little confused now as to what is the real "official" Rom.
That is the rom for the Google ion(dev phone) ported to the 32b. A RUU is the true "official" rom as it is carrier specific.
Sent from my Sapphire/dream using XDA App
I'm currently using the wildfire. I rooted it and installed rom manager.
I did backup my rom (CWRv3.2.0) and installed the wildpuzzle rom (Newest one).
But i think forgot to wipe off the data. After installing the rom, it booted fine but it says that my phone memory was low.
I waited for a very long time but it does not respond. Hence, i thought something was wrong and tried to go to cwr and did a factory reset.
But now it gives me a black screen after the htc logo.
And after 10 to20 minutes and it still does not respond. I went back and did a restore(before the wildpuzzle rom I've installed)and it came out that my phone cannot boot and stucked in a loop. (after 2 turns it went back to cwr)
I'm scared that i might bricked my phone.
Help please! Much appreciated!
When you do a Factory Reset in Clockworkmod, you need to flash a ROM again. Also, if you read the thread completely, WildPuzzle 2.3.2 does NOT work. It was released untested by danne (as he stated), and, various tests by users show it didnt boot.
EDIT: And if you are talking about Android 2.2 Sense ROM's, you will need to flash it using Clockworkmod 2.x. They are not supported on 3.x
So do i have to flash a new rom like CyanogenMod ? Sorry, I'm a complete noob at these. Edit: Its the Wildpuzzle 2.2 froyo v0.8 rom.

Yeah flash the CyanogenMod 7 ROM. But before you install this ROM please make sure to Wipe the data, Clear cache partition and also to clear dalvik cache and then proceed to install the CM7 ROM
